Finite-length Lyapunov exponents and conductance for quasi-1D disordered solids

The transfer matrix method is applied to finite quasi-1D disordered samples attached to perfect leads. The model is described by structured band matrices with random and regular entries. We investigate numerically the level spacing distribution for finite-length Lyapunov exponents as well as the conductance and its fluctuations for different channel numbers and sample sizes. A comparison is made with theoretical predictions and with numerical results recently obtained with the scattering matrix approach. The role of the coupling and finite size effects is also discussed.

Classical Representation of the 1D Anderson Model

A new approach is applied to the 1D Anderson model by making use of a two-dimensional Hamiltonian map. For a weak disorder this approach allows for a simple derivation of correct expressions for the localization length both at the center and at the edge of the energy band, where standard perturbation theory fails. Approximate analytical expressions for strong disorder are also obtained.

Finite-Size Corrections in Lyapunov Spectra for Band Random Matrices

The transfer matrix method is applied to quasi one-dimensional and one-dimensional disordered systems with long-range interactions, described by band random matrices. We investigate the convergence properties of the whole Lyapunov spectra of finite samples as a function of the bandwidth and of the sample length. Two different scaling laws are found at the maximal and minimal Lyapunov exponents.

Chaos and Thermalization in a Dynamical Model of Two Interacting Particles

A quantum dynamical model of two interacting spins, with chaotic and regular components, is investigated using a finite two-particles symmetrized basis. Chaotic eigenstates give rise to an equilibrium occupation number distribution in close agreement with the Bose-Einstein distribution despite the small number of particles ($n=2$). However, the corresponding temperature differs from that derived from the standard Canonical Ensemble. On the other side, an acceptable agreement with the latter is restored by artificially randomizing the model. Different definitions of temperature are then discussed and compared .

Structure of Eigenstates and Local Spectral Density of States: A Three-Orbital Schematic Shell Model

The average shape of the Spectral Local Density of States (LDOS) and eigenfunctions (EFs) has been studied numerically for a conservative dynamical model (three-orbital Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model) which can exhibit strong chaos in the classical limit. The attention is paid to the comparison of the shape of LDOS with that known for random matrix models, as well as to the shape of the EFs, for different values of the perturbation strength. The classical counterparts of the LDOS has also been studied and found in a remarkable agreement with the quantum calculations. Finally, by making use of a generalization of Brillouin- Wigner perturbation expansion, the form of long tails of LDOS and EFs is given analytically and confirmed numerically.

Statistical Theory of Finite Fermi-Systems Based on the Structure of Chaotic Eigenstates

The approach is developed for the description of isolated Fermi-systems with finite number of particles, such as complex atoms, nuclei, atomic clusters etc. It is based on statistical properties of chaotic excited states which are formed by the interaction between particles. New type of ``microcanonical'' partition function is introduced and expressed in terms of the average shape of eigenstates $F(E_k,E)$ where $E$ is the total energy of the system. This partition function plays the same role as the canonical expression $exp(-E^{(i)}/T)$ for open systems in thermal bath. The approach allows to calculate mean values and non-diagonal matrix elements of different operators. In particular, the following problems have been considered: distribution of occupation numbers and its relevance to the canonical and Fermi-Dirac distributions; criteria of equilibrium and thermalization; thermodynamical equation of state and the meaning of temperature, entropy and heat capacity, increase of effective temperature due to the interaction. The problems of spreading widths and shape of the eigenstates are also studied.

Dynamical theory of quantum chaos or hidden random matrix ensemble?

In a recent Letter [Phys.Rev.Lett., 77,4536 (1996), chao-dyn/9609014] Altland and Zirnbauer claim that they rigorously proved the complete analogy between a (classically chaotic) dynamical system and disordered (random) solids. The purpose of this Comment is to show that, in fact, their theory fails to take into account dynamical features which go beyond standard random matrix theory description.

Evolution of wave packets in quasi-1D and 1D random media: diffusion versus localization

We study numerically the evolution of wavepackets in quasi one-dimensional random systems described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian with long-range random interactions. Results are presented for the scaling properties of the width of packets in three time regimes: ballistic, diffusive and localized. Particular attention is given to the fluctuations of packet widths in both the diffusive and localized regime. Scaling properties of the steady-state distribution are also analyzed and compared with theoretical expression borrowed from one-dimensional Anderson theory. Analogies and differences with the kicked rotator model and the one-dimensional localization are discussed.

Transport properties of one-dimensional Kronig-Penney models with correlated disorder

Transport properties of one-dimensional Kronig-Penney models with binary correlated disorder are analyzed using an approach based on classical Hamiltonian maps. In this method, extended states correspond to bound trajectories in the phase space of a parametrically excited linear oscillator, while the on site-potential of the original model is transformed to an external force. We show that in this representation the two probe conductance takes a simple geometrical form in terms of evolution areas in phase-space. We also analyze the case of a general N-mer model.

Distribution of occupation numbers in finite Fermi-systems and role of interaction in chaos and thermalization

New method is developed for calculation of single-particle occupation numbers in finite Fermi systems of interacting particles. It is more accurate than the canonical distribution method and gives the Fermi-Dirac distribution in the limit of large number of particles. It is shown that statistical effects of the interaction are absorbed by an increase of the effective temperature. Criteria for quantum chaos and statistical equilibrium are considered. All results are confirmed by numerical experiments in the two-body random interaction model.

Correlations within Eigenvectors and Transition Amplitudes in the Two-Body Random Interaction Model

It is shown that the two-body character of the interaction in a many-body system gives rise to specific correlations between the components of compound states, even if this interaction is completely random. Surprisingly, these correlations increase with the increase of the number of active (valence) particles. Statistical theory of transition amplitudes between compound states, which takes into account these correlation is developed and tested within the framework of the Two-Body Random Interaction Model. It is demonstrated that a feature, which can be called ``correlation resonance'', appears in the distribution of the transition matrix amplitudes, since the correlations strongly reduce the transition amplitudes at the tails and increase them near the maximum of the distribution.

Scaling Properties of Localization Length in 1D Paired Correlated Binary Alloys of Finite Size

We study scaling properties of the localized eigenstates of the random dimer model in which pairs of local site energies are assigned at random in a one dimensional disordered tight-binding model. We use both the transfer matrix method and the direct diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in order to find how the localization length of a finite sample scales to the localization length of the infinite system. We derive the scaling law for the localization length and show it to be related to scaling behavior typical of uncorrelated Band Random Matrix, Anderson and Lloyd models.

Towards a Statistical Theory of Finite Systems and Compound States: Random Two-Body Interaction Approach

The model of Fermi particles with random two-body interaction is investigated. This model allows to study the origin and accuracy of statistical laws in few-body systems, the role of interaction and chaos in thermalization, Fermi-Dirac distribution for quasi-particles with spreading widths, matrix elements of external field and enhancement of weak perturbation in chaotic compound states.

Quantum Ergodicity and Localization in Conservative Systems: the Wigner Band Random Matrix Model

First theoretical and numerical results on the global structure of the energy shell, the Green function spectra and the eigenfunctions, both localized and ergodic, in a generic conservative quantum system are presented. In case of quantum localization the eigenfunctions are shown to be typically narrow and solid, with centers randomly scattered within the semicircle energy shell while the Green function spectral density (local spectral density of states) is extended over the whole shell, but sparse.

Wigner Random Banded Matrices with Sparse Structure: Local Spectral Density of States

Random banded matrices with linearly increasing diagonal elements are recently considered as an attractive model for complex nuclei and atoms. Apart from early papers by Wigner \cite{Wig} there were no analytical studies on the subject. In this letter we present analytical and numerical results for local spectral density of states (LDOS) for more general case of matrices with a sparsity inside the band. The crossover from the semicircle form of LDOS to that given by the Breit-Wigner formula is studied in detail.
