Frustrated three-leg spin tubes: from spin 1/2 with chirality to spin 3/2

Motivated by the recent discovery of the spin tube [(CuCl$_2$tachH)$_3$Cl]Cl$_2$, we investigate the properties of a frustrated three-leg spin tube with antiferromagnetic intra-ring and inter-ring couplings. We pay special attention to the evolution of the properties from weak to strong inter-ring coupling and show on the basis of extensive density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition between a dimerized gapped phase at weak coupling that can be described by the usual spin-chirality model and a gapless critical phase at strong coupling that can be described by an effective spin-3/2 model. We also show that there is a magnetization plateau at 1/3 in the gapped phase and slightly beyond. The implications for [(CuCl$_2$tachH)$_3$Cl]Cl$_2$ are discussed, with the conclusion that this system behaves essentially as a spin-3/2 chain.

Electronic Structure and Exchange Interactions of Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$

We have performed first-principle calculations of the electronic structure and exchange couplings for the nanotube compound Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$ using the LDA+U approach. Our results show that while the intra-ring exchange interactions are mainly antiferromagnetic, the inter-ring couplings are {\it ferromagnetic}. We argue that this is a consequence of the strong hybridization between filled and vacant 3d vanadium orbitals due to the low symmetry of Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$, which results into strong - and often dominant - ferromagnetic contributions to the total exchange interaction between vanadium atoms. A comparison with results of previous works is included.

Dynamic spin Jahn-Teller effect in small magnetic clusters

We study the effect of spin-phonon coupling in small magnetic clusters, concentrating on a S=1/2 ring of 4 spins coupled antiferromagnetically. If the phonons are treated as classical variables, there is a critical value of the spin-phonon coupling above which a static distortion occurs. This is a good approximation if the zero point energy is small compared to the energy gain due to the distortion, which is true for large exchange interactions compared to the phonons energy ($J\gg\hbarω$). In the opposite limit, one can integrate out the phonon degrees of freedom and get an effective spin hamiltonian. Using exact diagonalizations to include the quantum nature of both spins and phonons, we obtain the spectrum in the whole range of parameters and explicit the crossover between the classical and quantum regimes. We then establish quantitatively the limits of validity of two widely used approaches (one in the quantum and one in the classical limits) and show that they are quite poor for small magnetic clusters. We also show that upon reducing $\hbarω/J$ the first excitation of a 4-site cluster becomes a singlet, a result that could be relevant for Cu$_2$Te$_2$O$_5$Br$_2$.

Unusual magnetic properties of the low-dimensional quantum magnet Na2V3O7

We report the results of low-temperature measurements of the specific heat Cp(T), ac susceptibility chi(T) and 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance NMR of Na2V3O7. At liquid He temperatures Cp(T)/T exhibits broad field-dependent maxima, which shift to higher temperatures upon increasing the applied magnetic field H. Below 1.5 K the ac magnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law and exhibits a cusp at 0.086 mK which indicates a phase transition at very low temperatures. These results support the previous conjecture that Na2V3O7 is close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at mu_{0}H = 0 T. The entire data set, including results of measurements of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation 1/T1(T), reveals a complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures. We argue that it is due to a distribution of singlet-triplet energy gaps of dimerized V moments. The dimerization process evolves over a rather broad temperature range around and below 100 K. At the lowest temperatures the magnetic properties are dominated by the response of only a minor fraction of the V moments.

The Quantum Compass Model on the Square Lattice

Using exact diagonalizations, Green's function Monte Carlo simulations and high-order perturbation theory, we study the low-energy properties of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 compass model on the square lattice defined by the Hamiltonian $H = - \sum_{\bm{r}} (J_x σ_{\bm{r}}^x σ_{\bm{r} + \bm{e}_x}^x + J_z σ_{\bm{r}}^z σ_{\bm{r} + \bm{e}_z}^z)$. When $J_x\ne J_z$, we show that, on clusters of dimension $L\times L$, the low-energy spectrum consists of $2^L$ states which collapse onto each other exponentially fast with $L$, a conclusion that remains true arbitrarily close to $J_x=J_z$. At that point, we show that an even larger number of states collapse exponentially fast with $L$ onto the ground state, and we present numerical evidence that this number is precisely $2\times 2^L$. We also extend the symmetry analysis of the model to arbitrary spins and show that the two-fold degeneracy of all eigenstates remains true for arbitrary half-integer spins but does not apply to integer spins, in which cases eigenstates are generically non degenerate, a result confirmed by exact diagonalizations in the spin-1 case. Implications for Mott insulators and Josephson junction arrays are briefly discussed.

Field-Induced Effects of Anisotropic Magnetic Interactions in SrCu2(BO3)2

We observed a field-induced staggered magnetization in the 2D frustrated dimer-singlet spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 by 11B NMR, from which the magnitudes of the intradimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the staggered g-tensor were determined. These anisotropic interactions cause singlet-triplet mixing and eliminate a quantum phase transition at the expected critical field Hc for gap closing. They also provide a quantitative account for some puzzling phenomena such as the onset of a uniform magnetization below the and the persistence of the excitation gap above Hc. The gap was accurately determined from the activation energy of the nuclear relaxation rate.

Field-induced gap in ordered Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Heisenberg antiferromagnets in a strong uniform magnetic field $H$ are expected to exhibit a gapless phase with a global O(2) symmetry. In many real magnets, a small energy gap is induced by additional interactions that can be viewed as a staggered transverse magnetic field $h = c H$, where $c$ is a small proportionality constant. We study the effects of such a perturbation, particularly for magnets with long-range order, by using several complimentary approaches: numerical diagonalizations of a model with long-range interactions, classical equations of motion, and scaling arguments. In an ordered state at zero temperature, the energy gap at first grows as $(cH)^{1/2}$ and then may dip to a smaller value, of order $(cH)^{2/3}$, at the quantum critical point separating the ``gapless'' phase from the gapped state with saturated magnetization. In one spatial dimension, the latter exponent changes to 4/5.

Orbital degeneracy as a source of frustration in LiNiO$_2$

Motivated by the absence of cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and of magnetic ordering in LiNiO$_2$, a layered oxide with triangular planes, we study a general spin-orbital model on the triangular lattice. A mean-field approach reveals the presence of several singlet phases between the SU(4) symmetric point and a ferromagnetic phase, a conclusion supported by exact diagonalizations of finite clusters. We argue that one of the phases, characterized by a large number of low-lying singlets associated to dimer coverings of the triangular lattice, could explain the properties of LiNiO$_2$, while a ferro-orbital phase that lies nearby in parameter space leads to a new prediction for the magnetic properties of NaNiO$_2$.

Strain induced correlation gaps in carbon nanotubes

We calculate the change in the correlation gap of armchair carbon nanotubes with uniaxial elastic strain. We predict that such a stretching will enlarge the correlation gap for all carbon nanotubes by a change that could be as large as several meV per percent of applied strain, in contrast with pure band structure calculations where no change for armchair carbon nanotubes is predicted. The correlation effects are considered within a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation to the Hubbard model with on-site repulsion only.

Ising transition driven by frustration in a 2D classical model with SU(2) symmetry

We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for $J_2/J_1 > 1/2 $, thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective $Z_2$ symmetry leading to a {\it finite-temperature} phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that $T_c\to 0$ with an infinite slope when $J_2/J_1\to 1/2$.

Static impurities in the kagome lattice: dimer freezing and mutual repulsion

We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length scales. We calculate the local magnetization induced by doped impurities, and consider its implications for nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on known kagome systems.

Correlation gap in armchair carbon nanotubes

We revisit the problem of the correlation gap in (n,n) armchair carbon nanotubes, that would be metallic in the absence of electron-electron correlations. We attack the problem in the context of a Hubbard model with on-site repulsion U only, and we show that the scaling of the gap as exp(-nt/U) predicted by Balents and Fisher (Phys. Rev. B 55, R11973 (1997)), can only be valid if U is not too large, even for very large values of n. Using Hartree--Fock calculations and Renormalisation Group arguments we derive the scaling of the gap as a function of n for a given value of U. Possible applications for the magnitude of the correlation gap in armchair carbon nanotubes will be discussed.

A low-dimensional spin S = 1/2 system at the quantum critical limit: Na2V2O7

We report the results of measurements of the dc-susceptibility and the 23Na-NMR response of Na2V2O7, a recently synthesized, non metallic low dimensional spin system. Our results indicate that upon reducing the temperature to below 100 K, the V^{4+} moments are gradually quenched, leaving only one moment out of 9 active. The NMR data reveal a phase transition at very low temperatures. With decreasing applied field H, the critical temperature shifts towards T = 0 K, suggesting that Na2V2O7 may be regarded as an insulator reaching a quantum critical point at H = 0.

Magnetic Superstructure in the Two-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2

We report the observation of magnetic superstructure in a magnetization plateau state of SrCu2(BO3)2, a frustrated quasi-two-dimensional quantum spin system. The Cu and B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra at 35 mllikelvin indicate an apparently discontinuous phase transition from uniform magnetization to a modulated superstructure near 27 tesla, above which a magnetization plateau at 1/8 of the full saturation has been observed. Comparison of the Cu NMR spectrum and the theoretical analysis of a Heisenberg spin model demonstrates the crystallization of itinerant triplets in the plateau phase within a large rhomboid unit cell (16 spins per layer) showing oscillations of the spin polarization. Thus we are now in possession of an interesting model system to study a localization transition of strongly interacting quantum particles.

Ab initio investigation of VOSeO3, a spin gap system with coupled spin dimers

Motivated by an early experimental study of VOSeO3, which suggested that it is a quasi-2D system of weakly coupled spin dimers with a small spin gap, we have investigated the electronic structure of this material via density-functional calculations. These ab initio results indicate that the system is better thought of as an alternating spin-1/2 chain with moderate interchain interactions, an analog of (VO)2P2O7. The potential interest of this system for studies in high magnetic field given the presumably small value of the spin gap is emphasized.

High Magnetic Field NMR Studies of LiVGe$_2$O$_6$, a quasi 1-D Spin $S = 1$ System

We report $^{7}$Li pulsed NMR measurements in polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the quasi one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet LiVGe$_2$O$_6$, whose AF transition temperature is $T_{\text{N}}\simeq 24.5$ K. The field ($B_0$) and temperature ($T$) ranges covered were 9-44.5 T and 1.7-300 K respectively. The measurements included NMR spectra, the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$), and the spin-phase relaxation rate ($T_2^{-1}$), often as a function of the orientation of the field relative to the crystal axes. The spectra indicate an AF magnetic structure consistent with that obtained from neutron diffraction measurements, but with the moments aligned parallel to the c-axis. The spectra also provide the $T$-dependence of the AF order parameter and show that the transition is either second order or weakly first order. Both the spectra and the $T_1^{-1}$ data show that $B_0$ has at most a small effect on the alignment of the AF moment. There is no spin-flop transition up to 44.5 T. These features indicate a very large magnetic anisotropy energy in LiVGe$_2$O$_6$ with orbital degrees of freedom playing an important role. Below 8 K, $T_1^{-1}$ varies substantially with the orientation of $B_0$ in the plane perpendicular to the c-axis, suggesting a small energy gap for magnetic fluctuations that is very anisotropic.

Low Energy Singlets in the Excitation Spectrum of the Spin Tetrahedra System Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Low energy Raman scattering of the s=1/2 spin tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2 is dominated by an excitation at 18 cm^{-1} corresponding to an energy E_S=0.6Δ, with Δthe spin gap of the compound. For elevated temperatures this mode shows a soft mode-like decrease in energy pointing to an instability of the system. The isostructural reference system Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 with a presumably larger inter-tetrahedra coupling does not show such a low energy mode. Instead its excitation spectrum and thermodynamic properties are compatible with long range Neel-ordering. We discuss the observed effects in the context of quantum fluctuations and competing ground states.

Absence of effective spins 1/2 induced by nonmagnetic impurities in a class of low-dimensional magnets

We show that doping a Majumdar--Ghosh chain with non-magnetic impurities does {\it not} produce almost free spins 1/2. The difference between this system and other spin liquids, such as unfrustrated spin ladders, is illustrated in the context of the general dimerized, frustrated spin chain. By detailed analysis of the excitation spectra of finite chains with two impurities, we investigate the evolution of the screening affecting impurity-induced free spins, and of the sign and magnitude of their effective interactions. We comment on a possible connection to impurity-doping experiments in CuGeO_3.
