Evidence for an unconventional magnetic instability in the spin-tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Thermodynamic experiments as well as Raman scattering have been used to study the magnetic instabilities in the spin-tetrahedra systems Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2, X=Cl and Br. While the phase transition observed in the Cl system at T_o=18.2 K is consistent with 3D AF ordering, the phase transition at T_o=11.3 K in the Br system has several unusual features. We propose an explanation in terms of weakly coupled tetrahedra with a singlet-triplet gap and low lying singlets.

Spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations in the vanadium oxide VOSb$_{2}$O$_{4}$

We report on the magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements on polycrystalline samples of the vanadium oxide VOSb$_{2}$O$_{4}$, a quasi-one dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system. We show that the susceptibility vanishes at zero temperature, as in a gapped system, and we argue that this is due to a spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations.

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of Li(2)VOSiO(4): a two-dimensional S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet on a square lattice

NMR, muSR, magnetization and specific heat measurements in Li(2)VOSiO(4) powders and single crystals are reported. Specific heat and magnetization measurements evidence that Li(2)VOSiO(4) is a frustrated two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice with a superexchange coupling J_1, along the sides of the square, almost equal to J_2, the one along the diagonal ($J_2/J_1=1.1\pm 0.1$ with $J_2 + J_1 = 8.2\pm 1$ K). At $T_c\simeq 2.8$ K a phase transition to a low temperature collinear order is observed. T_c and the sublattice magnetization, derived from NMR and muSR, were found practically independent on the magnetic field intensity up to 9 Tesla. The critical exponent of the sublattice magnetization was estimated $β\simeq 0.235$, nearly coincident with the one predicted for a two-dimensional XY system on a finite size. The different magnetic properties found above and below T_c are associated with the modifications in the spin hamiltonian arising from a structural distortion occurring just above T_c.

Spontaneous plaquette formation in the SU(4) Spin-Orbital ladder

The low-energy properties of the SU(4) spin-orbital model on a two-leg ladder are studied by a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. Like in the case of SU(2) models, there is a singlet-multiplet gap in the spectrum, but the ground-state is two-fold degenerate. An interpretation in terms of SU(4)-singlet plaquettes is proposed. The implications for general two-dimensional lattices are outlined.

LiVGe2O6, an anomalous quasi 1D, $S = 1$ system, as revealed by NMR

We report the results of $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of LiVGe$_{2}$O$_{6}$, a quasi one--dimensional spin $S = 1$ model system, at low temperatures. Our data, including NMR spectra and the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_{1}^{-1}$, indicate a first order phase transition to occur at $T_{c}\simeq 23$ K. The NMR response of LiVGe$_{2}$O$_{6}$ below $T_{c}$ suggests that the ordered phase is antiferromagnetic and has unusual features. Possible reasons for this unexpected behavior are discussed.

Orbitally Degenerate Spin-1 Model for Insulating V2O3

Motivated by recent neutron, X-ray absorption and resonant scattering experiments, we revisit the electronic structure of V2O3. We propose a model in which S=1 V3+ ions are coupled in the vertical V-V pairs forming two-fold orbitally degenerate configurations with S=2. Ferro-orbital ordering of the V-V pairs gives a description which is consistent with all experiments in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase.

Li$_2$VO(Si,Ge)O$_4$, a prototype of a two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

NMR and magnetization measurements in Li$_2$VOSiO$_4$ and Li$_2$VOGeO$_4$ are reported. The analysis of the susceptibility shows that both compounds are two-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice with a sizeable frustration induced by the competition between the superexchange couplings $J_1$ along the sides of the square and $J_2$ along the diagonal. Li$_2$VOSiO$_4$ undergoes a low-temperature phase transition to a collinear order, as theoretically predicted for $J_2/J_1 > 0.5$. Just above the magnetic transition the degeneracy between the two collinear ground states is lifted by the onset of a structural distortion.

RVB description of the low-energy singlets of the spin 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet

{Extensive calculations in the short-range RVB (Resonating valence bond) subspace on both the trimerized and the regular (non-trimerized) Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice show that short-range dimer singlets capture the specific low-energy features of both models. In the trimerized case the singlet spectrum splits into bands in which the average number of dimers lying on one type of bonds is fixed. These results are in good agreement with the mean field solution of an effective model recently introduced. For the regular model one gets a continuous, gapless spectrum, in qualitative agreement with exact diagonalization results.

Magnetization plateaux and jumps in a class of frustrated ladders: A simple route to a complex behaviour

We study the occurrence of plateaux and jumps in the magnetization curves of a class of frustrated ladders for which the Hamiltonian can be written in terms of the total spin of a rung. We argue on the basis of exact diagonalization of finite clusters that the ground state energy as a function of magnetization can be obtained as the minimum - with Maxwell constructions if necessary - of the energies of a small set of spin chains with mixed spins. This allows us to predict with very elementary methods the existence of plateaux and jumps in the magnetization curves in a large parameter range, and to provide very accurate estimates of these magnetization curves from exact or DMRG results for the relevant spin chains.

Biquadratic interactions and spin-Peierls transition in the spin 1 chain LiVGe2O6

The magnetic susceptibility of a new one-dimensional, S=1 system, the vanadium oxide LiVGe2O6, has been measured. Contrary to previous S=1 chains, it exhibits an abrupt drop at 22 K typical of a spin-Peierls transition, and it is consistent with a gapless spectrum above this temperature. We propose that this behaviour is due to the presence of a significant biquadratic exchange interaction, a suggestion supported by quantum chemistry calculations that take into account the quasi-degeneracy of the t2g levels.

Elementary excitations of magnetically ordered systems with orbital degeneracy

The Holstein-Primakoff transformation is generalized to develop a quantum flavor wave theory for spin systems with orbital degeneracy. Elementary excitations consist of spin, orbital, and spin-orbital waves. Spin and spin-orbital waves couple each other due to orbital anisotropy and Hund's rule, resulting in new modes observable by inelastic neutron scattering. In the SU(4) limit, flavor waves are dispersionless along one or more directions, and give rise to quantum fluctuations of reduced dimensionality.

The spin gap of CaV4O9 revisited

The large-plaquette scenario of the spin gap in CaV4O9 is investigated on the basis of extensive exact diagonalizations. We confirm the existence of a large-plaquette phase in a wide range of parameters, and we show that the most recent neutron scattering data actually require an intra-plaquette second neighbor exchange integral much larger than the inter-plaquette one, thus justifying the perturbative calculation used in the interpretation of the neutron scattering experiments.

Residual entropy and spin gap in a one-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet

We show that the low-energy sector of the S=1/2, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a one-dimensional lattice of coupled tetrahedra consists of 2^N replica of the spectrum of the dimerized Heisenberg chain, where N is the number of tetrahedra. This provides a proof of the following properties: i) there is a residual ground-state entropy per spin equal to 2^{1/4}; ii) there is a singlet-triplet gap as long as the coupling between the tetrahedra is smaller than the internal one. These properties are compared to available results on the pyrochlore lattice.

Ab initio determination of exchange integrals and Neel temperature in the chain cuprates

We report ab initio quantum chemical cluster calculations of the chain (J_a) and the largest interchain (J_b) Heisenberg exchange of the chain cuprates Ca_2CuO_3 and Sr_2CuO_3. We find that J_a is comparable to the in-plane J in layered cuprates and J_a/J_b ~250-400. Using recent theory we obtain close agreement with experiment for the staggered moments and the critical temperatures. This implies that T_N does not depend on the third parameter J_c << J_b, and cannot be calculated using spin-wave theory. We propose an explanation for this interms of a 1D->2D cross-over.

Elementary excitations of the symmetric spin-orbital model: The XY limit

The elementary excitations of the 1D, symmetric, spin-orbital model are investigated by studying two anisotropic versions of the model, the pure XY and the dimerized XXZ case, with analytical and numerical methods. While they preserve the symmetry between spin and orbital degrees of freedom, these models allow for a simple and transparent picture of the low--lying excitations: In the pure XY case, a phase separation takes place between two phases with free--fermion like, gapless excitations, while in the dimerized case, the low-energy effective Hamiltonian reduces to the 1D Ising model with gapped excitations. In both cases, all the elementary excitations involve simultaneous flips of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom, a clear indication of the breakdown of the traditional mean-field theory.

$S=1/2$ Chain-Boundary Excitations in the Haldane Phase of 1D $S=1$ Systems

The $s=1/2$ chain-boundary excitations occurring in the Haldane phaseof $s=1$ antiferromagnetic spin chains are investigated. The bilinear-biquadratic hamiltonian is used to study these excitations as a function of the strength of the biquadratic term, $β$, between $-1\leβ\le1$. At the AKLT point, $β=-1/3$, we show explicitly that these excitations are localized at the boundaries of the chain on a length scale equal to the correlation length $ξ=1/\ln 3$, and that the on-site magnetization for the first site is $ =2/3$. Applying the density matrixrenormalization group we show that the chain-boundaryexcitations remain localized at the boundaries for $-1\leβ\le1$. As the two critical points $β=\pm1$ are approached the size of the $s=1/2$ objects diverges and their amplitude vanishes.

Magnetic properties of the coupled ladder system MgV$_2$O$_5$

We present magnetic susceptibility measurements on MgV$_2$O$_5$, a compound in which the vanadium oxide planes have the same topology as in CaV$_2$O$_5$. The most striking property is that there is an energy gap of about 15 K, much smaller than in CaV$_2$O$_5$, where the values reported are of the order of 500 K. We show that this may be understood naturally in terms of the phase diagram of the frustrated, coupled ladder system. This analysis leads to the prediction that MgV$_2$O$_5$ should have incommensurate dynamic spin fluctuations.

Phase Diagram of the S = 1/2 Frustrated Coupled Ladder System

We present a theoretical study of the magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated coupled ladder structure realized recently in several materials. This system displays a nondegenerate spin-gap state in the dimer limit and an infinitely degenerate spin-gap state in the regime of weakly-coupled zig-zag chains. Between these we demonstrate the existence of gapless, magnetically ordered regions whose order is antiferromagnetic close to the honeycomb lattice limit, and incommensurate along the chains when all three magnetic interactions compete.
