SAGE: A Proposal for a Space Atomic Gravity Explorer

The proposed mission "Space Atomic Gravity Explorer" (SAGE) has the scientific objective to investigate gravitational waves, dark matter, and other fundamental aspects of gravity as well as the connection between gravitational physics and quantum physics using new quantum sensors, namely, optical atomic clocks and atom interferometers based on ultracold strontium atoms.

Displacement power spectrum measurement of a macroscopic optomechanical system at thermal equilibrium

The mirror relative motion of a suspended Fabry-Perot cavity is studied in the frequency range 3-10 Hz. The experimental measurements presented in this paper, have been performed at the Low Frequency Facility, a high finesse optical cavity 1 cm long suspended to a mechanical seismic isolation system identical to that one used in the VIRGO experiment. The measured relative displacement power spectrum is compatible with a system at thermal equilibrium within its environmental. In the frequency region above 3 Hz, where seismic noise contamination is negligible, the measurement distribution is stationary and Gaussian, as expected for a system at thermal equilibrium. Through a simple mechanical model it is shown that: applying the fluctuation dissipation theorem the measured power spectrum is reproduced below 90 Hz and noise induced by external sources are below the measurement.

Testing the performance of a blind burst statistic

In this work we estimate the performance of a method for the detection of burst events in the data produced by interferometric gravitational wave detectors. We compute the receiver operating characteristics in the specific case of a simulated noise having the spectral density expected for Virgo, using test signals taken from a library of possible waveforms emitted during the collapse of the core of Type II Supernovae.

Inertial control of the mirror suspensions of the VIRGO interferometer for gravitational wave detection

In order to achieve full detection sensitivity at low frequencies, the mirrors of interferometric gravitational wave detectors must be isolated from seismic noise. The VIRGO vibration isolator, called 'superattenuator', is fully effective at frequencies above 4 Hz. Nevertheless, the residual motion of the mirror at the mechanical resonant frequencies of the system are too large for the interferometer locking system and must be damped. A multidimensional feedback system, using inertial sensors and digital processing, has been designed for this purpose. An experimental procedure for determining the feedback control of the system has been defined. In this paper a full description of the system is given and experimental results are presented.

On line power spectra identification and whitening for the noise in interferometric gravitational wave detectors

In this paper we address both to the problem of identifying the noise Power Spectral Density of interferometric detectors by parametric techniques and to the problem of the whitening procedure of the sequence of data. We will concentrate the study on a Power Spectral Density like the one of the Italian-French detector VIRGO and we show that with a reasonable finite number of parameters we succeed in modeling a spectrum like the theoretical one of VIRGO, reproducing all its features. We propose also the use of adaptive techniques to identify and to whiten on line the data of interferometric detectors. We analyze the behavior of the adaptive techniques in the field of stochastic gradient and in the Least Squares ones.

Solar models and neutrino deficit

The existing measurements of the solar neutrino flux are compared with the predictions of all models capable of reproducing the other solar observables. These predictions are supplemented by the hypothesis of neutrino oscillations with mass differences large enough to render energy-independent the depletion of the solar nu(e) flux. It is concluded that the data are consistent with this hypothesis and that an energy-dependence of the solar neutrino deficit must be regarded as an attractive possibility but not as a compelling reality.

Is the solar neutrino deficit energy-dependent?

All existing measurements of the solar neutrino flux are compared with the predictions of the most recent solar model by Bahcall and Pinsonneault, modified by introducing the hypothesis of neutrino oscillations with mass differences large enough to render energy-independent any quantity observable on earth. It is concluded that the data are consistent with this hypothesis and that, at least for the time being, any energy-dependence of the solar neutrino deficit must be regarded as just an attractive theoretical possibility, but not as a compelling reality.

A complete solution to neutrino mixing

Deviations from expectations have been claimed for solar, atmospheric and high energy prompt neutrinos from charm decay. This information, supplemented only by the existing very good upper limits for oscillations of the $ν_μ$ at accelerator energies, is used as input to a phenomenological three-flavour analysis of neutrino mixing. The solution found is unique and completely determines the mass eigenstates as well as the mixing matrix relating mass and flavour eigenstates. Assuming the mass eigenstates to follow the hierarchy $m_{1} \ll m_{2} \ll m_{3}$, their values are found to be $m_{1} \ll 10^{-2}$ eV, $m_{2} = (0.18 \pm 0.06)$ eV, $m_{3} = (19.4 \pm 0.7)$ eV. These masses are in agreement with the leptonic quadratic hierarchy of the see-saw model and large enough to render energy-independent any oscillation-induced phenomenon in solar neutrino physics observable on Earth. This possibility is not excluded by the present knowledge of solar neutrino physics. The mixing angles are determined to be $θ_{12} = 0.55 \pm 0.08$, $θ_{13} = 0.38 \pm 0.06$, $θ_{23} < 0.03$. Small values of $θ_{23}$ are typical of any solution in which $m_{3}$ lies in the cosmological interesting region. The solution found is not in serious contradiction with any of the present limits to the existence of neutrino oscillations. The most relevant implications in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology are discussed.
