Number squeezing, quantum fluctuations and oscillations in mesoscopic Bose Josephson junctions

Starting from a quantum two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we determine the ground state properties, momentum distribution and dynamical evolution for a Bose Josephson junction realized by an ultracold Bose gas in a double-well trap. Varying the well asymmetry we identify Mott-like regions of parameters where number fluctuations are suppressed and the interference fringes in the momentum distribution are strongly reduced. We also show how Schroedinger cat states, realized from an initially phase coherent state by a sudden rise of the barrier among the two wells, will give rise to a destructive interference in the time-dependent momentum distribution.

Strong tunable coupling between a superconducting charge and phase qubit

We have realized a tunable coupling over a large frequency range between an asymmetric Cooper pair transistor (charge qubit) and a dc SQUID (phase qubit). Our circuit enables the independent manipulation of the quantum states of each qubit as well as their entanglement. The measurements of the charge qubit's quantum states is performed by resonant read-out via the measurement of the quantum states of the SQUID. The measured coupling strength is in agreement with an analytic theory including a capacitive and a tunable Josephson coupling between the two qubits.

Electron-phonon coupling and longitudinal mechanical-mode cooling in a metallic nanowire

We investigate electron-phonon coupling in a narrow suspended metallic wire, in which the phonon modes are restricted to one dimension but the electrons behave three-dimensionally. Explicit theoretical results related to the known bulk properties are derived. We find out that longitudinal vibration modes can be cooled by electronic tunnel refrigeration far below the bath temperature provided the mechanical quality factors of the modes are sufficiently high. The obtained results apply to feasible experimental configurations.

Electron and phonon Cooling in a Superconductor - Normal Metal - Superconductor Tunnel Junction

We present evidence for the cooling of normal metal phonons by electron tunneling in a Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor tunnel junction. The normal metal electron temperature is extracted by comparing the device current-voltage characteristics to the theoretical prediction. We use a quantitative model for the phonon cooling that includes the electron-phonon coupling in the normal metal and the Kapitza resistance between the substrate and the metal. It gives an excellent fit to the data and enables us to extract an effective phonon temperature in the normal metal.

Normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction as a Brownian refrigerator

Thermal noise generated by a hot resistor (resistance $R$) can, under proper conditions, catalyze heat removal from a cold normal metal (N) in contact with a superconductor (S) via a tunnel barrier. Such a NIS junction acts as Maxwell's demon, rectifying the heat flow. Upon reversal of the temperature gradient between the resistor and the junction the heat fluxes are reversed: this presents a regime which is not accessible in an ordinary voltage-biased NIS structure. We obtain analytical results for the cooling performance in an idealized high impedance environment, and perform numerical calculations for general $R$. We conclude by assessing the experimental feasibility of the proposed effect.

Qubits as devices to detect the third moment of current fluctuations

Under appropriate conditions controllable two-level systems can be used to detect the third moment of current fluctuations. We derive a Master Equation for a quantum system coupled to a bath valid to the third order in the coupling between the system and the environment. In this approximation the reduced dynamics of the quantum system depends on the frequency dependent third moment. Specializing to the case of a controllable two-level system (a qubit) and in the limit in which the splitting between the levels is much smaller than the characteristic frequency of the third moment, it is possible to show that the decay of the qubit has additional oscillations whose amplitude is directly proportional to the value of the third moment. We discuss an experimental setup where this effect can be seen.

Phase-Charge Duality of a Josephson junction in a fluctuating electromagnetic environment

We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of a single Josephson junction placed in a high impedance environment. The transfer of Cooper pairs through the junction is governed by overdamped quasicharge dynamics, leading to Coulomb blockade and Bloch oscillations. Exact duality exists to the standard overdamped phase dynamics of a Josephson junction, resulting in a dual shape of the current-voltage characteristic, with current and voltage changing roles. We demonstrate this duality with experiments which allow for a quantitative comparison with a theory that includes the effect of fluctuations due to finite temperature of the electromagnetic environment.

Coulomb blockade of Cooper pair tunneling and parity effects in the Cooper pair transistor

We have measured the Cooper Pair Transistor (CPT) in a tunable electromagnetic environment consisting of four one-dimensional SQUID arrays. The transport properties of the CPT in the high impedance limit, Z_env>>R_Q=6.45~kΩ, are studied for different ratios of the Josephson coupling energy to the charging energy. As the impedance of the environment is increased, the current-voltage characteristic (IVC) of the CPT develops a Coulomb blockade of Cooper pair tunneling and the measured IVCs agree qualitatively with a theory based on quasicharge dynamics for a CPT. Increasing the impedance of the environment induces a transition in the modulation of the IVC with the gate charge from e-periodic to 2e-periodic.

Frequency-dependent current correlation functions from scattering theory

We present a general formalism based on scattering theory to calculate quantum correlation functions involving several time-dependent current operators. A key ingredient is the causality of the scattering matrix, which allows one to deal with arbitrary correlation functions. Our formalism might be useful in view of recent developments in full counting statistics of charge transfer, where detecting schemes have been proposed for measurement of frequency dependent spectra of higher moments. Some of these schemes are different from the well-known fictitious spin-detector and therefore generally involve calculation of non-Keldysh-contour-ordered correlation functions. As an illustration of our method we consider various third order correlation functions of current, including the usual third cumulant of current statistics. We investigate the frequency dependence of these correlation functions explicitly in the case of energy-independent scattering. The results can easily be generalized to the calculation of arbitrary n-th order correlation functions, or to include the effect of interactions.

Superconducting Fluctuation Corrections to the Thermal Current in Granular Metals

The first-order superconducting fluctuation corrections to the thermal conductivity of a granular metal are calculated. A suppression of thermal conductivity proportional to $T_c/(T-T_c)$ is observed in a region not too close to the critical temperature $T_c$. As $T\simeq T_c$, a saturation of the correction is found, and its sign depends on the ratio between the barrier transparency and the critical temperature. In both regimes, the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated.

Adiabatic pumping in a Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor weak link

We present a formalism to study adiabatic pumping through a superconductor - normal - superconductor weak link. At zero temperature, the pumped charge is related to the Berry phase accumulated, in a pumping cycle, by the Andreev bound states. We analyze in detail the case when the normal region is short compared to the superconducting coherence length. The pumped charge turns out to be an even function of the superconducting phase difference. Hence, it can be distinguished from the charge transferred due to the standard Josephson effect.

Finite frequency quantum noise in an interacting mesoscopic conductor

We present a quantum calculation based on scattering theory of the frequency dependent noise of current in an interacting chaotic cavity. We include interactions of the electron system via long range Coulomb forces between the conductor and a gate with capacitance $C$. We obtain explicit results exhibiting the two time scales of the problem, the cavity's dwell time $τ_D$ and the $RC$-time $τ_C$ of the cavity {\em vis à vis} the gate. The noise shows peculiarities at frequencies of the order and exceeding the inverse charge relaxation time $τ^{-1} = τ^{-1}_D+τ^{-1}_C $.

Loss of quantum coherence in a system coupled to a zero-temperature environment

We discuss the influence of a zero-temperature environment on a coherent quantum system. First, we calculate the reduced density operator of the system in the framework of the well-known, exactly solvable model of an oscillator coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. Then, we propose the sketch of an Aharonov--Bohm-like interferometer showing, through interference measurements, the decrease of the coherence length of the system due to the interaction with the environment, even in the zero temperature limit.

Thermal transport in granular metals

We study the electron thermal transport in granular metals at large tunnel conductance between the grains, $g_T \gg 1$ and not too low a temperature $T > g_Tδ$, where $δ$ is the mean energy level spacing for a single grain. Taking into account the electron-electron interaction effects we calculate the thermal conductivity and show that the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated for granular metals. We find that interaction effects suppress the thermal conductivity less than the electrical conductivity.

Observation of transition from escape dynamics to underdamped phase diffusion in a Josephson junction

We have investigated the dynamics of underdamped Josephson junctions. In addition to the usual crossover between macroscopic quantum tunnelling and thermally activated (TA) behaviour we observe in our samples with relatively small Josephson coupling E_J, for the first time, the transition from TA behaviour to underdamped phase diffusion. Above the crossover temperature the threshold for switching into the finite voltage state becomes extremely sharp. We propose a (T,E_J) phase-diagram with various regimes and show that for a proper description of it dissipation and level quantization in a metastable well are crucial.

Coherent oscillations in a superconducting multi-level quantum system

We have observed coherent time evolution of states in a multi-level quantum system, formed by a current-biased dc SQUID. The manipulation of the quantum states is achieved by resonant microwave pulses of flux. The number of quantum states participating in the coherent oscillations increases with increasing microwave power. Quantum measurement is performed by a nanosecond flux pulse which projects the final state onto one of two different voltage states of the dc SQUID, which can be read out.

Subgap noise of a superconductor-normal-metal tunnel interface

It is well established that the subgap conductivity through a normal-metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction is strongly affected by interference of electron waves scattered by impurities. In this paper we investigate how the same phenomenon affects the low frequency current noise, $S$, for voltages $V$ and temperatures $T$ much smaller than the superconducting gap. If the normal metal is at equilibrium we find that the simple relation $S(V,T) = 4e {\rm coth} (eV/T) I(V,T) $ holds quite generally even for non-linear $I$-$V$ characteristics. Only when the normal metal is out of equilibrium, noise and current become independent. Their ratio, the Fano factor, depends then on the details of the layout.

Limitations in cooling electrons by normal metal - superconductor tunnel junctions

We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally two limiting factors in cooling electrons using biased tunnel junctions to extract heat from a normal metal into a superconductor. Firstly, when the injection rate of electrons exceeds the internal relaxation rate in the metal to be cooled, the electrons do no more obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution, and the concept of temperature cannot be applied as such. Secondly, at low bath temperatures, states within the gap induce anomalous heating and yield a theoretical limit of the achievable minimum temperature.
