Current-current correlations in hybrid superconducting and normal metal multiterminal structures

We consider a hybrid system consisting of two normal metal leads weakly connected to a superconductor. Current-current correlations of the normal leads are studied in the tunneling limit at subgap voltages and temperatures. We find that only two processes contribute to the cross-correlation: the crossed Andreev reflection (emission of electrons in different leads) and the elastic cotunneling. Both processes are possible due to the finite size of the Cooper pair. Noise measurements can thus be used to probe directly the superconducting wave function without the drawbacks appearing in average current measurements where the current is dominated by direct Andreev reflection processes. By tuning the voltages it is possible to change the sign of the cross correlation. Quantitative predictions are presented both in the diffusive and ballistic regimes.

One-shot quantum measurement using a hysteretic DC-SQUID

We propose a single shot quantum measurement to determine the state of a Josephson charge quantum bit (qubit). The qubit is a Cooper pair box (CPB) and the measuring device is a two junction superconducting quantum interference device (dc-SQUID). This coupled system exhibits a close analogy with a Rydberg atom in a high Q cavity, except that in the present device we benefit from the additional feature of escape from the supercurrent state by macroscopic quantum tunneling, which provides the final read-out. We test the feasibility of our idea against realistic experimental circuit parameters and by analyzing the phase fluctuations of the qubit.

Supercurrent in Long SFFS Junctions with Antiparallel Domain Configuration

We calculate the current-phase relation of a long Josephson junction consisting of two ferromagnetic domains with equal, but opposite magnetization $h$, sandwiched between two superconductors. In the clean limit, the current-phase relation is obtained with the help of Eilenberger equation. In general, the supercurrent oscillations are non-sinusoidal and their amplitude decays algebraically when the exchange field is increased. If the two domains have the same size, the amplitude is independent of $h$, due to an exact cancellation of the phases acquired in each ferromagnetic domain. These results change drastically in the presence of disorder. We explicitly study two cases: Fluctuations of the domain size (in the framework of the Eilenberger equation) and impurity scattering (using the Usadel equation). In both cases, the current-phase relation becomes sinusoidal and the amplitude of the supercurrent oscillations is exponentially suppressed with $h$, even if the domains are identical on average.

Influence of thermal fluctuations on an underdamped Josephson tunnel junction

Inspired by a recent experiment, we study the influence of thermal fluctuations on the $I$-$V$ characteristics of a Josephson junction, coupled to a strongly resistive environment. We obtain analytical results in the limit where the Josephson energy is larger than the charging energy and quasiparticles are absent.

Measurement of coherent charge transfer in an adiabatic Cooper pair pump

We study adiabatic charge transfer in a superconducting Cooper pair pump, focusing on the influence of current measurement on coherence. We investigate the limit where the Josephson coupling energy $E_J$ between the various parts of the system is small compared to the Coulomb charging energy $E_C$. In this case the charge transferred in a pumping cycle $Q_P \sim 2e$, the charge of one Cooper pair: the main contribution is due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling. We are particularly interested in the quantum correction to $Q_P$, which is due to coherent tunneling of pairs across the pump and which depends on the superconducting phase difference $ϕ_0$ between the electrodes: $1-Q_P/(2e) \sim (E_J/E_C) \cos ϕ_0$. A measurement of $Q_P$ tends to destroy the phase coherence. We first study an arbitrary measuring circuit and then specific examples and show that coherent Cooper pair transfer can in principle be detected using an inductively shunted ammeter.

Cooper Pair Box Coupled to a Current-Biased Josephson Junction

We study the dynamics of a quantum superconducting circuit which consists of a Josephson charge qubit, coupled capacitively to a current biased Josephson junction. Under certain conditions, the eigenstates of the qubit and the junction become entangled. We obtain the time evolution of these states in the limit of weak coupling. Rabi oscillations occur, as a result of the spontaneous emission and re-absorption of a single oscillation quantum in the junction. We discuss a possible way to experimentally determine the quantum state of the junction and hence observe the Rabi oscillations.

Correlated tunneling into a superconductor in a multiprobe hybrid structure

We consider tunneling in a hybrid system consisting of a superconductor with two or more probe electrodes which can be either normal metals or polarized ferromagnets. In particular we study transport at subgap voltages and temperatures. Besides Andreev pair tunneling at each contact, in multi-probe structures subgap transport involves additional channels, which are due to coherent propagation of two particles (electrons or holes), each originating from a different probe electrode. The relevant processes are electron cotunneling through the superconductor and conversion of two electrons stemming from different probes in a Cooper pair. These processes are non-local and decay when the distance between the pair of involved contacts is larger than the superconducting coherence length. The conductance matrix of a the three terminal hybrid structure is calculated. The multi-probe processes enhance the conductance of each contact. If the contacts are magnetically polarized the contribution of the various conduction channels may be separately detected.

Entangled states in a Josephson charge qubit coupled to a superconducting resonator

We study the dynamics of a quantum superconducting circuit which is the analogue of an atom in a high-Q cavity. The circuit consists of a Josephson charge qubit coupled to a superconducting resonator. The charge qubit can be treated as a two level quantum system whose energy separation is split by the Josephson energy $E_j$. The superconducting resonator in our proposal is the analogue of a photon box and is described by a quantum harmonic oscillator with characteristic frequency $ω_r$. The coupling between the charge qubit and the resonator is realized by a coupling capacitance $C_c$. We have studied the eigenstates as well as the dynamics of the quantum circuit. Interesting phenomena occur when the Josephson energy equals the oscillator frequency, $E_j=\hbarω_r$. Then the quantum circuit is described by entangled states. We have deduced the time evolution of these states in the limit of weak coupling between the charge qubit and the resonator. We found Rabi oscillations of the excited charge qubit eigenstate. This effect is explained by the spontaneous emission and re-absorption of a single photon in the superconducting resonator.

Quantum interference and Coulomb interaction in arrays of tunnel junctions

We study the electronic properties of an array of small metallic grains connected by tunnel junctions. Such an array serves as a model for a granular metal. Previous theoretical studies of junction arrays were based on models of quantum dissipation which did not take into account the diffusive motion of electrons within the grains. We demonstrate that these models break down at sufficiently low temperatures: for a correct description of the screening properties of a granular metal at low energies the diffusive nature of the electronic motion within the grains is crucial. We present both a diagrammatic and a functional integral approach to analyse the properties of junction arrays. In particular, a new effective action is obtained which enables us to describe the array at arbitrary temperature. In the low temperature limit, our theory yields the correct, dynamically screened Coulomb interaction of a normal metal, whereas at high temperatures the standard description in terms of quantum dissipation is recovered.

Re-entrant spin susceptibility of a superconducting grain

We study the spin susceptibility chi of a small, isolated superconducting grain. Due to the interplay between parity effects and pairing correlations, the dependence of chi on temperature T is qualitatively different from the standard BCS result valid in the bulk limit. If the number of electrons on the grain is odd, chi shows a re-entrant behavior as a function of temperature. This behavior persists even in the case of ultrasmall grains where the mean level spacing is much larger than the BCS gap. If the number of electrons is even, chi(T) is exponentially small at low temperatures.

Magnetotunneling as a Probe of Luttinger-Liquid Behavior

A novel method for detecting Luttinger-liquid behavior is proposed. The idea is to measure the tunneling conductance between a quantum wire and a parallel two-dimensional electron system as a function of both the potential difference between them, $V$, and an in-plane magnetic field, $B$. We show that the two-parameter dependence on $B$ and $V$ allows for a determination of the characteristic dependence on wave vector $q$ and frequency $ω$ of the {\it spectral function}, $A_{\rm LL}(q,ω)$, of the quantum wire. In particular, the separation of spin and charge in the Luttinger liquid should manifest itself as singularities in the $I$-$V$-characteristic. The experimental feasibility of the proposal is discussed.

Spin-charge separation and Kondo effect in an open quantum dot

We study a quantum dot connected to the bulk by single-mode junctions at almost perfect conductance. Although the average charge $e\langle N \rangle$ of the dot is not discrete, its spin remains quantized: $s=1/2$ or $s=0$, depending (periodically) on the gate voltage. This drastic difference from the conventional mixed-valence regime stems from the existence of a broad-band, dense spectrum of discrete levels in the dot. In the doublet state, the Kondo effect develops at low temperatures. We find the Kondo temperature $T_K$ and the conductance at $T\lesssim T_K$.

Properties of superconductor - Luttinger liquid hybrid systems

In this paper we review some recent results concerning the physics of superconductor - Luttinger liquid proximity systems. We discuss both equilibrium (the pair amplitude, Josephson current, and the local density of states) and nonequilibrium (the subgap current) properties.

Anomalous Thermal Transport in Quantum Wires

We study thermal transport in a one-dimensional quantum wire, connected to reservoirs. Despite of the absence of electron backscattering, interactions in the wire strongly influence thermal transport. Electrons propagate with unitary transmission through the wire and electric conductance is not affected. Energy, however, is carried by bosonic excitations (plasmons) which suffer from scattering even on scales much larger than the Fermi wavelength. If the electron density varies randomly, plasmons are localized and {\em charge-energy separation} occurs. We also discuss the effect of plasmon-plasmon interaction using Levinson's theory of nonlocal heat transport.

Interaction Constants and Dynamic Conductance of a Gated Wire

We show that the interaction constant governing the long-range electron-electron interaction in a quantum wire coupled to two reservoirs and capacitively coupled to a gate can be determined by a low frequency measurement. We present a self-consistent, charge and current conserving theory of the full conductance matrix. The collective excitation spectrum consists of plasma modes with a relaxation rate which increases with the interaction strength and is inversely proportional to the length of the wire. The interaction parameter is determined by the first two coefficients of the out-of-phase component of the dynamic conductance measured at the gate.

Influence of Quantum Fluctuations on Phase Coherent Andreev Tunneling

We study the subgap transport properties of a small capacitance normal metal-superconductor tunnel junction coupled to an external electromagnetic environment. Mesoscopic interference between the electrons in the normal metal strongly enhances the subgap conductance with decreasing bias voltage. On the other hand, quantum fluctuations of the environment destroy electronic phase coherence and suppress the subgap conductance at low bias (Coulomb blockade). The competition between charging effects and mesoscopic interference leads to a non-monotonic dependence of the differential subgap conductance on the applied bias voltage. This feature is pronounced, even if the coupling to the environment is weak and the charging energy is small.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Equilibrium State of a Thin Superconducting Loop

We study the oscillatory flux dependence of the supercurrent in a thin superconducting loop, closed by a Josephson junction. Quantum fluctuations of the order parameter in the loop affect the shape and renormalize the amplitude of the supercurrent oscillations. In a short loop, the amplitude of the sinusoidal flux dependence is suppressed. In a large loop, the supercurrent shows a saw-tooth dependence on flux in the classical limit. Quantum fluctuations not only suppress the amplitude of the oscillations, but also smear the cusps of the saw-tooth dependence. The oscillations approach a sinusoidal form with increasing fluctuation strength. At any finite length of the loop, the renormalized current amplitude is finite. This amplitude shows a power-law dependence on the junction conductance, with an exponent depending on the low-frequency impedance of the loop.

Anomalous density of states of a Luttinger liquid in contact with a superconductor

We study the frequency and space dependence of the local tunneling density of states of a Luttinger liquid (LL) which is connected to a superconductor. This coupling {\em strongly} modifies the single-particle properties of the LL. It significantly enhances the density of states near the Fermi level, whereas this quantity vanishes as a power law for an isolated LL. The enhancement is due to the interplay between electron-electron interactions and multiple back-scattering processes of low-energy electrons at the interface between the LL and the superconductor. This anomalous behavior extends over large distances from the interface and may be detected by coupling normal probes to the system.
