Coherent States of Graphene Layer with and without a PT-symmetric Chemical Potential

In this paper we construct different classes of coherent and bicoherent states for the graphene tight-binding model in presence of a magnetic field, and for a deformed version where we include a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric chemical potential $V$. In particular, the problems caused by the absence of a suitable ground state for the system is taken into account in the construction of these states, for $V=0$ and for $V\neq0$. We introduce ladder operators which work well in our context, and we show, in particular, that there exists a choice of these operators which produce a factorization of the Hamiltonian. The role of broken and unbroken $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetry is discussed, in connection with the strength of $V$.

Abstract ladder operators for non self-adjoint Hamiltonians, with applications

Ladder operators are useful, if not essential, in the analysis of some given physical system since they can be used to find easily eigenvalues and eigenvectors of its Hamiltonian. In this paper we extend our previous results on abstract ladder operators considering in many details what happens if the Hamiltonian of the system is not self-adjoint. Among other results, we give an existence criterion for coherent states constructed as eigenstates of our lowering operators. In the second part of the paper we discuss two different examples of our framework: pseudo-quons and a deformed generalized Heisenberg algebra. Incidentally, and interestingly enough, we show that pseudo-quons can be used to diagonalize an oscillator-like Hamiltonian written in terms of (non self-adjoint) position and momentum operators which obey a deformed commutation rule of the kind often considered in minimal length quantum mechanics.

Regularized quantum motion in a bounded set: Hilbertian aspects

It is known that the momentum operator canonically conjugated to the position operator for a particle moving in some bounded interval of the line {(with Dirichlet boundary conditions) is not essentially self-adjoint}: it has a continuous set of self-adjoint extensions. We prove that essential self-adjointness can be recovered by symmetrically weighting the momentum operator with a positive bounded function approximating the indicator function of the considered interval. This weighted momentum operator is consistently obtained from a similarly weighted classical momentum through the so-called Weyl-Heisenberg covariant integral quantization of functions or distributions.

Ladder operators with no vacuum, their coherent states, and an application to graphene

In literature ladder operators of different nature exist. The most famous are those obeying canonical (anti-) commutation relations, but they are not the only ones. In our knowledge, all ladder operators have a common feature: the lowering operators annihilate a non zero vector, the {\em vacuum}. This is connected to the fact that operators of these kind are often used in factorizing some positive operators, or some operators which are { bounded from below}. This is the case, of course, of the harmonic oscillator, but not only. In this paper we discuss what happens when considering lowering operators with no vacua. In particular, after a general analysis of this situation, we propose a possible construction of coherent states, and we apply our construction to graphene.

Bank Deposits as {\em Money Quanta}

According to the Accounting View of Money (AVM), the money issued by commercial banks in the form of demand deposits features a hybrid nature, since deposits can be shown to consist of a share of deposits bearing the characteristics of debt (debt-deposits) and a share of deposits bearing the characteristics of equity (equity-deposits), in a mix that depends on factors that relate to the issuing banks and the environment where they operate and interact, which may change over time. Following this important finding of the AVM, it is only consequential to associate the hybrid nature of bank deposits with the dual nature of the objects which is typical in quantum physics, and to investigate whether and how the application of quantum analytical methods and ideas to a form of money showing dualistic features could be used to extract valuable economic information.

Uncertainty relation for non-Hermitian operators

In this paper we discuss some aspects of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, mostly from the point of view of non self-adjoint operators. Some equivalence results, and some refinements of the inequality, are deduced, and some relevant examples are discussed. We also begin a sort of {\em dynamical analysis} of the relation, in connection with what has been recently called $γ$-{dynamics} and $γ$-symmetries, and we discuss in some details the role of different scalar products in our analysis. The case of self-adjoint operators is recovered as a special case of our general settings.

On the Pauli group on 2-qubits in dynamical systems with pseudofermions

The group of matrices $P_1$ of Pauli is a finite 2-group of order 16 and plays a fundamental role in quantum information theory, since it is related to the quantum information on the 1-qubit. Here we show that both $P_1$ and the Pauli 2-group $P_2$ of order 64 on 2-qubits, other than in quantum computing, can also appear in dynamical systems which are described by non self-adjoint Hamiltonians. This will allow us to represent $P_1$ and $P_2$ in terms of pseudofermionic operators.

Multiplication of distributions in a linear gain and loss system

We consider a model of coupled oscillators which can be seen as a gain and loss system. In the attempt to quantize the system we propose a new definition of multiplication between distributions, and we check that this definition can be adopted when checking the biorthonormality of the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian $H$ of the system, and of its adjoint $H^\dagger$. In the analysis carried out here, the role of {\em weak pseudo-bosonic} ladder operators is relevant.

Unbounded Hamiltonians generated by Parseval frames

In \cite{BK} Parseval frames were used to define bounded Hamiltonians, both in finite and in infinite dimesional Hilbert spaces. Here we continue this analysis, with a particular focus on the discrete spectrum of Hamiltonian operators defined as a weighted infinite sum of rank one operators defined by some Parseval frame living in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The main difference with \cite{BK} is that, here, the operators we consider are mostly unbounded. This is an useful upgrade with respect to our previous results, since physically meaningful Hamiltonians are indeed often unbounded. However, due to the fact that frames (in general) are not bases, the definition of an Hamiltonian is not so easy, and part of our results goes in this direction. Also, we discuss the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians, and we discuss some physical applications of our framework.

Some perturbation results for quasi-bases and other sequences of vectors

We discuss some perturbation results concerning certain pairs of sequences of vectors in a Hilbert space $\Hil$ and producing new sequences which share, with the original ones, { reconstruction formulas on a dense subspace of $\Hil$ or on the whole space}. We also propose some preliminary results on the same issue, but in a distributional settings.

Phase transitions, KMS-condition and Decision Making

We consider a simple model of interacting agents asked to choose between "yes" and "not" to some given question. The agents are described in terms of spin variables, and they interact according to a mean field Heisenberg model. We discuss under which conditions the agents can come out with a common choice. This is made using, in a social context, the notion of KMS-states and phase transitions.

Heisenberg dynamics for non self-adjoint Hamiltonians: symmetries and derivations

In some recent literature the role of non self-adjoint Hamiltonians, $H\neq H^\dagger$, is often considered in connection with gain-loss systems. The dynamics for these systems is, most of the times, given in terms of a Schrödinger equation. In this paper we rather focus on the Heisenberg-like picture of quantum mechanics, stressing the (few) similarities and the (many) differences with respected to the standard Heisenberg picture for systems driven by self-adjoint Hamiltonians. In particular, the role of the symmetries, *-derivations and integrals of motion is discussed.

A fully pseudo-bosonic Swanson model

We consider a fully pseudo-bosonic Swanson model and we show how its Hamiltonian $H$ can be diagonalized. We also deduce the eigensystem of $H^\dagger$, using the general framework and results deduced in the context of pseudo-bosons. We also construct, using different approaches, the bi-coherent states for the model, study some of their properties, and compare the various constructions.

A class of weak pseudo-bosons and their bi-coherent states

In this paper we extend some previous results on weak pseudo-bosons and on their related bi-coherent states. The role of {\em compatible} functions is discussed in details, and some examples are considered. The pseudo-bosonic ladder operators analysed in this paper generalize significantly those considered so far, and a class of new diagonalizable manifestly non self-adjoint Hamiltonians are deduced.

Bi-coherent states as generalized eigenstates of the position and the momentum operators

In this paper we show that the position and the derivative operators, $\hat q$ and $\hat D$, can be treated as ladder operators connecting the various vectors of two biorthonormal families, $\mathcal{F}_φ$ and $\mathcal{F}_ψ$. In particular, the vectors in $\mathcal{F}_φ$ are essentially monomials in $x$, $x^k$, while those in $\mathcal{F}_ψ$ are weak derivatives of the Dirac delta distribution, $δ^{(m)}(x)$, times some normalization factor. We also show how bi-coherent states can be constructed for these $\hat q$ and $\hat D$, both as convergent series of elements of $\mathcal{F}_φ$ and $\mathcal{F}_ψ$, or using two different displacement-like operators acting on the two vacua of the framework. Our approach generalizes well known results for ordinary coherent states.

A Swanson-like Hamiltonian and the inverted harmonic oscillator

We deduce the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of a parameter-dependent Hamiltonian $H_θ$ which is closely related to the Swanson Hamiltonian, and we construct bi-coherent states for it. After that, we show how and in which sense the eigensystem of the Hamiltonian $H$ of the inverted quantum harmonic oscillator can be deduced from that of $H_θ$. We show that there is no need to introduce a different scalar product using some ad hoc metric operator, as suggested by other authors. Indeed we prove that a distributional approach is sufficient to deal with the Hamiltonian $H$ of the inverted oscillator.

Non-Hermitian physics and master equations

A longstanding tool to characterize the evolution of open Markovian quantum systems is the GKSL (Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad) master equation. However, in some cases, open quantum systems can be effectively described with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which have attracted great interest in the last twenty years due to a number of unconventional properties, such as the appearance of exceptional points. Here, we present a short review of these two different approaches aiming in particular to highlight their relation and illustrate different ways of connecting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to a GKSL master equation for the full density matrix.

Abstract ladder operators and their applications

We consider a rather general version of ladder operator $Z$ used by some authors in few recent papers, $[H_0,Z]=λZ$ for some $λ\in\mathbb{R}$, $H_0=H_0^\dagger$, and we show that several interesting results can be deduced from this formula. Then we extend it in two ways: first we replace the original equality with formula $[H_0,Z]=λZ[Z^\dagger, Z]$, and secondly we consider $[H,Z]=λZ$ for some $λ\in\mathbb{C}$, $H\neq H^\dagger$. In both cases many applications are discussed. In particular we consider factorizable Hamiltonians and Hamiltonians written in terms of operators satisfying the generalized Heisenberg algebra or the $\D$ pseudo-bosonic commutation relations.
