Gabor representations of evolution operators

We perform a time-frequency analysis of Fourier multipliers and, more generally, pseudodifferential operators with symbols of Gevrey, analytic and ultra-analytic regularity. As an application we show that Gabor frames, which provide optimally sparse decompositions for Schroedinger-type propagators, reveal to be an even more efficient tool for representing solutions to a wide class of evolution operators with constant coefficients, including weakly hyperbolic and parabolic-type operators. Besides the class of operators, the main novelty of the paper is the proof of super-exponential (as opposite to super-polynomial) off-diagonal decay for the Gabor matrix representation.

Exponentially sparse representations of Fourier integral operators

We investigate the sparsity of the Gabor-matrix representation of Fourier integral operators with a phase having quadratic growth. It is known that such an infinite matrix is sparse and well organized, being in fact concentrated along the graph of the corresponding canonical transformation. Here we show that, if the phase and symbol have a regularity of Gevrey type of order $s>1$ or analytic ($s=1$), the above decay is in fact sub-exponential or exponential, respectively. We also show by a counterexample that ultra-analytic regularity ($s<1$) does not give super-exponential decay. This is in sharp contrast to the more favorable case of pseudodifferential operators, or even (generalized) metaplectic operators, which are treated as well.

Wave packet analysis of Schrodinger equations in analytic function spaces

We consider a class of linear Schroedinger equations in R^d, with analytic symbols. We prove a global-in-time integral representation for the corresponding propagator as a generalized Gabor multiplier with a window analytic and decaying exponentially at infinity, which is transported by the Hamiltonian flow. We then provide three applications of the above result: the exponential sparsity in phase space of the corresponding propagator with respect to Gabor wave packets, a wave packet characterization of Fourier integral operators with analytic phases and symbols, and the propagation of analytic singularities.

Generalized Metaplectic Operators and the Schrödinger Equation with a Potential in the Sjöstrand Class

It is well known that the matrix of a metaplectic operator with respect to phase-space shifts is concentrated along the graph of a linear symplectic map. We show that the algebra generated by metaplectic operators and by pseudodifferential opertators in a Sjöstrand class enjoys the same decay properties. We study the behavior of these generalized metaplectic operators and represent them by Fourier integral operators. Our main result shows that the one-parameter group generated by a Hamiltonian operator with a potential in the Sjöstrand class consists of generalized metaplectic operators. As a consequence, the Schrödinger equation preserves the phase-space concentration, as measured by modulation space norms.

Schrödinger equations with rough Hamiltonians

We consider a class of linear Schrödinger equations in R^d with rough Hamiltonian, namely with certain derivatives in the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. We prove that the corresponding propagator is bounded on modulation spaces. The present results improve several contributions recently appeared in the literature and can be regarded as the evolution counterpart of the fundamental result of Sjöstrand about the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in that class. Finally we consider nonlinear perturbations of real-analytic type and we prove local wellposedness of the corresponding initial value problem in certain modulation spaces.

Gabor Frames of Gaussian Beams for the Schrödinger equation

The present paper is devoted to the semiclassical analysis of linear Schrödinger equations from a Gabor frame perspective. We consider (time-dependent) smooth Hamiltonians with at most quadratic growth. Then we construct higher order parametrices for the corresponding Schrödinger equations by means of $\hbar$-Gabor frames, as recently defined by M. de Gosson, and we provide precise $L^2$-estimates of their accuracy, in terms of the Planck constant $\hbar$. Nonlinear parametrices, in the spirit of the nonlinear approximation, are also presented. Numerical experiments are exhibited to compare our results with the early literature.

Sharp $L^p$ estimates for Schrödinger groups

Consider a non-negative self-adjoint operator $H$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We suppose that its heat operator $e^{-tH}$ satisfies an off-diagonal algebraic decay estimate, for some exponents $p_0\in[0,2)$. Then we prove sharp $L^p\to L^p$ frequency truncated estimates for the Schrödinger group $e^{itH}$ for $p\in[p_0,p'_0]$. In particular, our results apply to every operator of the form $H=(i\nabla+A)^2+V$, with a magnetic potential $A\in L^2_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{R}^d)$ and an electric potential $V$ whose positive and negative parts are in the local Kato class and in the Kato class, respectively.

Propagation of singularities for semilinear Schrödinger equations

We study the propagation of singularities for semilinear Schrodinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians, in particular for the semilinear harmonic oscillator. We show that the propagation still occurs along the flow the Hamiltonian flow, but for Sobolev regularities in a certain range and provided the notion of Sobolev-wave front set is conveniently modified. The proof makes use of a weighted version of the paradifferential calculus, adapted to our situation. The results can be regarded as the Schrodinger counterpart of those known for semilinear hyperbolic equations, which hold with the usual wave front set.

Gabor wave packets and evolution operators

We perform a Gabor analysis for a large class of evolution equations with constant coefficients. We show that the corresponding propagators have a very sparse Gabor matrix, displaying off-diagonal exponential decay. The results apply to hyperbolic, weakly hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Some numerical experiments are provided.

On the Schrödinger equation with potential in modulation spaces

This work deals with Schrödinger equations with quadratic and sub-quadratic Hamiltonians perturbed by a potential. In particular we shall focus on bounded, but not necessarily smooth perturbations. We shall give a representation of such evolution as the composition of a metaplectic operator and a pseudodifferential operator having symbol in certain classes of modulation spaces. About propagation of singularities, we use a new notion of wave front set, which allows the expression of optimal results of propagation in our context. To support this claim, many comparisons with the existing literature are performed in this work.

Some remarks on the radius of spatial analyticity for the Euler equations

We consider the Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with analytic data and prove lower bounds for the radius of spatial analyticity $ε(t)$ of the solution using a new method based on inductive estimates in standard Sobolev spaces. Our results are consistent with similar previous results proved by Kukavica and Vicol, but give a more precise dependence of $ε(t)$ on the radius of analyticity of the initial datum.

On the radius of spatial analyticity for semilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems

We study the problem of propagation of analytic regularity for semi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems. We adopt a global perspective and we prove that if the initial datum extends to a holomorphic function in a strip of radius (=width) ε_0, the same happens for the solution u(t,.) for a certain radius ε(t), as long as the solution exists. Our focus is on precise lower bounds on the spatial radius of analyticity ε(t) as t grows. We also get similar results for the Schroedinger equation with a real-analytic electromagnetic potential.

Phase space analysis of semilinear parabolic equations

We present a wave packet analysis of a class of possibly degenerate parabolic equations with variable coefficients. As a consequence, we prove local wellposedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in spaces of low regularity, namely the modulation spaces, assuming a nonlinearity of analytic type. As another application, we deduce that the corresponding phase space flow decreases the global wave front set. We also consider the action on spaces of analytic functions, provided the coefficients are analytic themselves.

A Two Dimensional Adler-Manin Trace and Bi-singular Operators

Motivated by the theory of bi-singular pseudodifferential operators, we introduce a two dimensional version of the Adler-Manin trace. Our construction is rather general in the sense that it involves a twist afforded by an algebra automorphism. That is, starting from an algebra equipped with an automorphism, two twisted derivations, and a twisted invariant trace, we construct an algebra of formal twisted pseudodifferential symbols and define a noncommutative residue. Also, we provide related examples.

Gevrey local solvability in locally integrable structures

We consider a locally integrable real-analytic structure, and we investigate the local solvability in the category of Gevrey functions and ultradistributions of the complex d' naturally induced by the de Rham complex. We prove that the so-called condition Y(q) on the signature of the Levi form, for local solvability of d' u=f, is still necessary even if we take f in the classes of Gevrey functions and look for solutions u in the corresponding spaces of ultradistributions.

The Wiener Property for a Class of Fourier Integral Operators

We construct a one-parameter family of algebras consisting of Fourier integral operators. We derive boundedness results, composition rules, and the spectral invariance of this class of operators. The operator algebra is defined by the decay properties of an associated Gabor matrix around the graph of the canonical transformation.
