Approximation of Fourier Integral Operators by Gabor multipliers

A general principle says that the matrix of a Fourier integral operator with respect to wave packets is concentrated near the curve of propagation. We prove a precise version of this principle for Fourier integral operators with a smooth phase and a symbol in the Sjoestrand class and use Gabor frames as wave packets. The almost diagonalization of such Fourier integral operators suggests a specific approximation by (a sum of) elementary operators, namely modified Gabor multipliers. We derive error estimates for such approximations. The methods are taken from time-frequency analysis.

Global regularity for ordinary differential operators with polynomial coefficients

For a class of ordinary differential operators $P$ with polynomial coefficients, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $P$ to be globally regular in $\R$, i.e. $u\in\cS^\prime(\R)$ and $Pu\in\cS(\R)$ imply $u\in \cS(\R)$ (this can be regarded as a global version of the Schwartz' hypoellipticity notion). The condition involves the asymptotic behaviour, at infinity, of the roots $ξ=ξ_j(x)$ of the equation $p(x,ξ)=0$, where $p(x,ξ)$ is the (Weyl) symbol of $P$.

Regularity and decay of solutions of nonlinear harmonic oscillators

We prove sharp analytic regularity and decay at infinity of solutions of variable coefficients nonlinear harmonic oscillators. Namely, we show holomorphic extension to a sector in the complex domain, with a corresponding Gaussian decay, according to the basic properties of the Hermite functions in R^d. Our results apply, in particular, to nonlinear eigenvalue problems for the harmonic oscillator associated to a real-analytic scattering, or asymptotically conic, metric in R^d, as well as to certain perturbations of the classical harmonic oscillator.

Holomorphic extension of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations

We prove, for a wide class of semilinear elliptic differential and pseudodifferential equations in $\R^d$, that the solutions which are sufficiently regular and have a certain decay at infinity extend to holomorphic functions in sectors of $\mathbb{C}^d$, improving earlier results where the extension was shown for a strip. Moreover, exponential decay for such extended solutions is also proved. The results apply, in particular, to solitary wave solutions of many classical nonlinear evolution equations.

Boundedness of Schroedinger type propagators on modulation spaces

It is known that Fourier integral operators arising when solving Schrödinger-type operators are bounded on the modulation spaces $\cM^{p,q}$, for $1\leq p=q\leq\infty$, provided their symbols belong to the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. However, they generally fail to be bounded on $\cM^{p,q}$ for $p\not=q$. In this paper we study several additional conditions, to be imposed on the phase or on the symbol, which guarantee the boundedness on $\cM^{p,q}$ for $p\not=q$, and between $\cM^{p,q}\to\cM^{q,p}$, $1\leq q< p\leq\infty$. We also study similar problems for operators acting on Wiener amalgam spaces, recapturing, in particular, some recent results for metaplectic operators. Our arguments make heavily use of the uncertainty principle.

Sharp Continuity Results for the Short-Time Fourier Transform and for Localization Operators

We completely characterize the boundedness on $L^p$ spaces and on Wiener amalgam spaces of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and of a special class of pseudodifferential operators, called localization operators. Precisely, a well-known STFT boundedness result on $L^p$ spaces is proved to be sharp. Then, sufficient conditions for the STFT to be bounded on the Wiener amalgam spaces $W(L^p,L^q)$ are given and their sharpness is shown. Localization operators are treated similarly. Using different techniques from those employed in the literature, we relax the known sufficient boundedness conditions for localization operators on $L^p$ spaces and prove the optimality of our results. More generally, we prove sufficient and necessary conditions for such operators to be bounded on Wiener amalgam spaces.

Pseudodifferential operators on $L^p$, Wiener amalgam and modulation spaces

We give a complete characterization of the continuity of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, acting on a given Lebesgue space $L^r$. Namely, we find the full range of triples $(p,q,r)$, for which such a boundedness occurs. More generally, we completely characterize the same problem for operators acting on Wiener amalgam space $W(L^r,L^s)$ and even on modulation spaces $M^{r,s}$. Finally the action of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $W(\Fur L^1,L^\infty)$ is also investigated.

Boundedness of Fourier integral operators on Fourier Lebesgue spaces and affine fibrations

We carry on the study of Fourier integral operators of H{ö}rmander's type acting on the spaces $(\mathcal{F}L^p)_{comp}$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$, of compactly supported distributions whose Fourier transform is in $L^p$. We show that the sharp loss of derivatives for such an operator to be bounded on these spaces is related to the rank $r$ of the Hessian of the phase $Φ(x,η)$ with respect to the space variables $x$. Indeed, we show that operators of order $m=-r|1/2-1/p|$ are bounded on $(\mathcal{F}L^p)_{comp}$, if the mapping $x\longmapsto\nabla_xΦ(x,η)$ is constant on the fibers, of codimension $r$, of an affine fibration.

Boundedness of Fourier Integral Operators on $\mathcal{F} L^p$ spaces

We study the action of Fourier Integral Operators (FIOs) of H{ö}rmander's type on ${\mathcal{F}} L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d_{comp}$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We see, from the Beurling-Helson theorem, that generally FIOs of order zero fail to be bounded on these spaces when $p\not=2$, the counterexample being given by any smooth non-linear change of variable. Here we show that FIOs of order $m=-d|1/2-1/p|$ are instead bounded. Moreover, this loss of derivatives is proved to be sharp in every dimension $d\geq1$, even for phases which are linear in the dual variables. The proofs make use of tools from time-frequency analysis such as the theory of modulation spaces.

On the global boundedness of Fourier integral operators

We consider a class of Fourier integral operators, globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, with symbols and phases satisfying product type estimates (the so-called $SG$ or scattering classes). We prove a sharp continuity result for such operators when acting on the modulation spaces $M^p$. The minimal loss of derivatives is shown to be $d|1/2-1/p|$. This global perspective produces a loss of decay as well, given by the same order. Strictly related, striking examples of unboundedness on $L^p$ spaces are presented.

Slicing surfaces and Fourier restriction conjecture

We deal with the restriction phenomenon for the Fourier transform. We prove that each of the restriction conjectures for the sphere, the paraboloid, the elliptic hyperboloid in $\mathbb{R}^n$ implies that for the cone in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove a new restriction estimate for any surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ locally isometric to the plane and of finite type.

Sharpness of some properties of Wiener amalgam and modulation spaces

We prove sharp estimates for the dilation operator $f(x)\longmapsto f(λx)$, when acting on Wiener amalgam spaces $W(L^p,L^q)$. Scaling arguments are also used to prove the sharpness of the known convolution and pointwise relations for modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, as well as the optimality of an estimate for the Schrödinger propagator on modulation spaces.

Remarks on Fourier multipliers and applications to the Wave equation

Exploiting continuity properties of Fourier multipliers on modulation spaces and Wiener amalgam spaces, we study the Cauchy problem for the NLW equation. Local wellposedness for rough data in modulation spaces and Wiener amalgam spaces is shown. The results formulated in the framework of modulation spaces refine those in [3]. The same arguments may apply to obtain local wellposedness for the NLKG equation.

Time-Frequency Analysis of Fourier Integral Operators

We use time-frequency methods for the study of Fourier Integral operators (FIOs). In this paper we shall show that Gabor frames provide very efficient representations for a large class of FIOs. Indeed, similarly to the case of shearlets and curvelets frames, the matrix representation of a Fourier Integral Operator with respect to a Gabor frame is well-organized. This is used as a powerful tool to study the boundedness of FIOs on modulation spaces. As special cases, we recapture boundedness results on modulation spaces for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in $M^{\infty,1}$, for some unimodular Fourier multipliers and metaplectic operators.

Some new Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation

We deal with fixed-time and Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger propagator as an operator on Wiener amalgam spaces. We discuss the sharpness of the known estimates and we provide some new estimates which generalize the classical ones. As an application, we present a result on the wellposedness of the linear Schrödinger equation with a rough time dependent potential.
