Cyclic Symmetry on Complex Tori and Bagnera-De Franchis Manifolds

We describe the possible linear actions of a cyclic group $G = \mathbb{Z} /n$ on a complex torus, using the cyclotomic exact sequence for the group algebra $\mathbb{Z} [G]$. The main application is devoted to a structure theorem for Bagnera-De Franchis Manifolds, but we also give an application to hypergeometric integrals.

The classification of Hyperelliptic threefolds

We complete the classification of hyperelliptic threefolds, describing in an elementary way the hyperelliptic threefolds with group $D_4$. These are algebraic and form an irreducible 2-dimensional family. Our paper is fully self-contained.

Del Pezzo Surfaces, Rigid Line Configurations and Hirzebruch-Kummer Coverings

We prove the equisingular rigidity of the singular Hirzebruch-Kummer coverings $X(n, \mathcal{L})$ of the projective plane branched on line configurations $\mathcal{L}$, satisfying some technical condition. In the case, $\mathcal{L}$ = the complete quadrangle, we give explicit equations of the Hirzebruch-Kummer covering $S_n$ (=the minimal desingularisation of $X(n, \mathcal{L})$) in a product of four Fermat curves of degree n. Since $S_n$ is the $(\mathbb{Z}/n)^5$ covering of the Del Pezzo surface $Y_5$ of degree 5 branched on the 10 lines, these equations are derived from explicit equations of the image of $Y_5$ in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^4$. Version2: We added a new section, describing more generally determinantal equations for all Del Pezzo surfaces of degree $9-k \leq 6$ as subvarieties of the k-fold product of the projective line.

Deformation of a generically finite map to a hypersurface embedding

Motivated by the theory of Inoue-type varieties, we give a structure theorem for projective manifolds $W_0$ with the property of admitting a 1-parameter deformation where $W_t$ is a hypersurface in a projective smooth manifold $Z_t$. Their structure is the one of special iterated univariate coverings which we call of normal type, which essentially means that the line bundles where the univariate coverings live are tensor powers of the normal bundle to the image $X$ of $W_0$. We give applications to the case where $Z_t$ is projective space, respectively an Abelian variety.

Higher dimensional Lemniscates: the geometry of $r$ particles in $n$-space with logarithmic potentials

We prove some basic theorems concerning lemniscate configurations in an Euclidean space of dimension $ n \geq 3$. Lemniscates are defined as follows. Given m points $w_j $ in $\mathbb R^n$, consider the function $F(x)$ which is the product of the distances $ |x-w_j|$: the singular level sets of the function $F$ are called lemniscates. We show via complex analysis that the critical points of $F$ have Hessian of positivity at least $(n-1)$. This implies that, if $F$ is a Morse function, then $F$ has only local minima and saddle points with negativity 1. The critical points lie in the convex span of the points $|w_j| $ (these are absolute minima): but we made also the discovery that $F$ can also have other local minima, and indeed arbitrarily many. We discuss several explicit examples. We finally prove in the appendix that all critical points are isolated.

On the canonical map of some surfaces isogenous to a product

We give new contributions to the existence problem of canonical surfaces of high degree. We construct several families (indeed, connected components of the moduli space) of surfaces $S$ of general type with $p_g=5,6$ whose canonical map has image $Σ$ of very high degree, $d=48$ for $p_g=5$, $d=56$ for $p_g=6$. And a connected component of the moduli space consisting of surfaces $S$ with $K^2_S = 40, p_g=4, q=0$ whose canonical map has always degree $\geq 2$, and, for the general surface, of degree $2$ onto a canonical surface $Y$ with $K^2_Y = 12, p_g=4, q=0$. The surfaces we consider are SIP 's, i.e. surfaces $S$ isogenous to a product of curves $(C_1 \times C_2 )/ G$; in our examples the group $G$ is elementary abelian, $G = (\mathbb{Z}/m)^k$. We also establish some basic results concerning the canonical maps of any surface isogenous to a product, basing on elementary representation theory.

Enriques' classification in characteristic $ p >0$ : the $P_{12}$-Theorem

The main goal of this paper is to show that Castelnuovo- Enriques' $P_{12}$-theorem also holds for algebraic surfaces $S$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic ($char(k) = p > 0$). The $P_{12}$-theorem is a precise version of the rough classification of algebraic surfaces, in particular the conditions $P_{12} = 0$, $P_{12} = 1$,$P_{12} \geq 2$ are respectively equivalent to : Kodaira dimension $-\infty, 0 , \geq 1$. The result relies on a main theorem describing the growth of the plurigenera for properly-elliptic or properly quasi-elliptic surfaces (surfaces with Kodaira dimension equal to 1). We also discuss the limit cases, i.e. the families of surfaces which show that the results of the main theorem are sharp.

Kodaira fibrations and beyond: methods for moduli theory

Kodaira fibred surfaces are a remarkable example of projective classifying spaces, and there are still many intriguing open questions concerning them, especially the slope question. The topological characterization of Kodaira fibrations is emblematic of the use of topological methods in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces and higher dimensional complex algebraic varieties, and their compactifications. The paper contains some new results but is mostly a survey paper, dealing with fibrations, questions on monodromy and factorizations in the mapping class group, old and new results on Variation of Hodge Structures, especially a recent answer given (in joint work with Dettweiler) to a long standing question posed by Fujita. In the landscape of our tour, Galois coverings, deformations and rigid manifolds (new results obtained with Ingrid Bauer) projective classifying spaces, the action of the absolute Galois group on moduli spaces, stand also in the forefront. These questions lead to interesting algebraic surfaces, for instance the BCDH surfaces, hypersurfaces in Bagnera-de Franchis varieties, Inoue-type surfaces.

Dihedral Galois covers of algebraic varieties and the simple cases

In this article we investigate the algebra and geometry of dihedral covers of smooth algebraic varieties. To this aim we first describe the Weil divisors and the Picard group of divisorial sheaves on normal double covers. Then we provide a structure theorem for dihedral covers, that is, given a smooth variety Y, we describe the algebraic "building data" on Y which are equivalent to the existence of such covers X --> Y. We introduce then two special very explicit classes of dihedral covers: the simple and the almost simple dihedral covers, and we determine their basic invariants. For the simple dihedral covers we also determine their natural deformations. In the last section we give an application to fundamental groups.

On rigid compact complex surfaces and manifolds

This article investigates the subject of rigid compact complex manifolds. First of all we investigate the different notions of rigidity (local rigidity, global rigidity, infinitesimal rigidity, etale rigidity and strong rigidity) and the relations among them. Only for curves these notions coincide and the only rigid curve is the projective line. For surfaces we prove that a rigid surface which is not minimal of general type is either a Del Pezzo surface of degree >= 5 or an Inoue surface. We give examples of rigid manifolds of dimension n >= 3 and Kodaira dimensions 0, and 2 <=k <= n. Our main theorem is that the Hirzebruch Kummer coverings of exponent n >= 4 branched on a complete quadrangle are infinitesimally rigid. Moreover, we pose a number of questions.

Vector bundles on curves coming from Variation of Hodge Structures

Fujita's second theorem for Kähler fibre spaces over a curve asserts that the direct image $V$ of the relative dualizing sheaf splits as the direct sum $ V = A \oplus Q$, where $A$ is ample and $Q$ is unitary flat. We focus on our negative answer (\cite{cd}) to a question by Fujita: is $V$ semiample? We give here an infinite series of counterexamples using hypergeometric integrals and we give a simple argument to show that the monodromy representation is infinite. Our counterexamples are surfaces of general type with positive index, explicitly given as abelian coverings with group $(\mathbb Z/n)^2$ of a Del Pezzo surface of degree 5 (branched on a union of lines forming a bianticanonical divisor), and endowed with a semistable fibration with only $3$ singular fibres. The simplest such surfaces are the three ball quotients, already considered in joint work of I. Bauer and the first author, fibred over a curve of genus $2$, and with fibres of genus $4$. These examples are a larger class than the ones corresponding to Shimura curves in the moduli space of Abelian varieties.

Canonical surfaces of higher degree

We consider a family of surfaces of general type $S$ with $K_S$ ample, having $K^2_S = 24, p_g (S) = 6, q(S)=0$. We prove that for these surfaces the canonical system is base point free and yields an embedding $Φ_1 : S \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^5$. This result answers a question posed by G. and M. Kapustka. We discuss some related open problems, concerning also the case $p_g(S) = 5$, where one requires the canonical map to be birational onto its image.

Topological methods in moduli theory

One of the main themes of this long article is the study of projective varieties which are K(H,1)'s, i.e. classifying spaces BH for some discrete group H. After recalling the basic properties of such classifying spaces, an important class of such varieties is introduced, the one of Bagnera-de Franchis varieties, the quotients of an Abelian variety by the free action of a cyclic group. Moduli spaces of Abelian varieties and of algebraic curves enter into the picture as examples of rational K(H,1)'s, through Teichmueller theory. The main thrust of the paper is to show how in the case of K(H,1)'s the study of moduli spaces and deformation classes can be achieved through by now classical results concerning regularity of classifying maps. The Inoue type varieties of Bauer and Catanese are introduced and studied as a key example, and new results are shown. Motivated from this study, the moduli spaces of algebraic varieties, and especially of algebraic curves with a group of automorphisms of a given topological type are studied in detail, following new results by the author, Michael Loenne and Fabio Perroni. Finally, the action of the absolute Galois group on the moduli spaces of such K(H,1) varieties is studied. In the case of surfaces isogenous to a product, it is shown how this yields a faifhtul action on the set of connected components of the moduli space: for each Galois automorphisms of order different from 2 there is a surface S such that the Galois conjugate surface of S has fundamental group not isomorphic to the one of S.

Monodromy and normal forms

We discuss the history of the monodromy theorem, starting from Weierstraß, and the concept of monodromy group. From this viewpoint we compare then the Weierstraß, the Legendre and other normal forms for elliptic curves, explaining their geometric meaning and distinguishing them by their stabilizer in P SL(2,Z) and their monodromy. Then we focus on the birth of the concept of the Jacobian variety, and the geometrization of the theory of Abelian functions and integrals. We end illustrating the methods of complex analysis in the simplest issue, the difference equation $f(z) = g(z+1) - g(z)$ on $\mathbb C$.

On the unirationality of higher dimensional Ueno-type manifolds

We prove the unirationality of the Ueno-type manifold $X_{4,6}$. $X_{4,6}$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient of the Cartesian product $E(6)^4$, where $E(6)$ is the equianharmonic elliptic curve, by the diagonal action of a cyclic group of order 6 (having a fixed point on each copy of $E(6)$). We collect also other results, and discuss several related open questions.
