Generalized Burniat type surfaces and Bagnera-de Franchis varieties

In this article we construct three new families of surfaces of general type with p_g = q = 0,K^2 = 6, and seven new families of surfaces of general type with p_g = q = 1, K^2 = 6, realizing 10 new fundamental groups. We also show that these families correspond to pairwise distinct irreducible connected components of the Gieseker moduli space of surfaces of general type. We achieve this using two different main ingredients. First we introduce a new class of surfaces, called generalized Burniat type surfaces, and we completely classify them (and the connected com- ponents of the moduli space containing them). Second, we introduce the notion of Bagnera-de Franchis varieties: these are the free quotients of an Abelian variety by a cyclic group (not consisting only of translations). For these we develop some basic results.

The irreducible components of the moduli space of dihedral covers of algebraic curves

In this paper we introduce a new invariant for the action of a finite group $G$ on a compact complex curve of genus $g$. With the aid of this invariant we achieve the classification of the components of the moduli space of curves with an effective action by the dihedral group $D_n$. This invariant has been used in the meanwhile by the authors in order to extend the genus stabilization result of Livingston and Dunfield and Thurston to the ramified case. This new version contains an appendix clarifying the correspondence between the above components and the image loci in the moduli space M_g (classifying when two such components have the same image).

A characterization of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors

We give two characterizations of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors in terms of the existence of a holomorphic endomorphism \s of the tensor product T\otimes T' of the tangent bundle T with the cotangent bundle T'. To such a curvature type tensor \s one associates the first Mok characteristic cone S, obtained by projecting on T the intersection of ker (\s) with the space of rank 1 tensors. The simpler characterization requires that the projective scheme associated to S be a finite union of projective varieties of given dimensions and codimensions in their linear spans which must be skew and generate.

The fundamental group and torsion group of Beauville surfaces

We give a survey on the fundamental group of surfaces isogenous to a higher product. If the surfaces are regular, e.g. if they are Beauville surfaces, the first homology group is a finite group. We present a MAGMA script which calculates the first homology groups of regular surfaces isogenous to a product.

Subcanonical Graded Rings Which Are Not Cohen-Macaulay, with Appendix: A non-Q-Gorenstein Cohen-Macaulay cone X with K_X Q-Cartier

The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl, giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.

Answer to a question by Fujita on Variation of Hodge Structures

We first provide details for the proof of Fujita's second theorem for Kähler fibre spaces over a curve, asserting that the direct image $V$ of the relative dualizing sheaf splits as the direct sum $ V = A \oplus Q$, where $A$ is ample and $Q$ is unitary flat. Our main result then answers in the negative the question posed by Fujita whether $V$ is semiample. In fact, $V$ is semiample if and only if $Q$ is associated to a representation of the fundamental group of $B$ having finite image. Our examples are based on hypergeometric integrals.

Unirationality of Ueno-Campana's threefold

We shall prove that the threefold studied in the paper "Remarks on an Example of K. Ueno" by F. Campana is unirational. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed in the paper above and also in the book by K. Ueno, "Classification theory of algebraic varieties and compact complex spaces".

Caustics of plane curves, their birationality and matrix projections

After recalling the notion of caustics of plane curves and basic equations, we first show the birationality of the caustic map for a general source point S in the plane. Then we prove more generally a theorem for curves D in the projective space of 3x3 symmetric matrices B. For a general 3x1 vector S the projection to the plane given by B --- BS is birational on D, unless D is not a line and D is contained in a plane of the form Delta_v = {B | Bv = 0}.

Faithful actions of the absolute Galois group on connected components of moduli spaces

We give a canonical procedure associating to an algebraic number a first a hyperelliptic curve C_a, and then a triangle curve (D_a, G_a) obtained through the normal closure of an associated Belyi function. In this way we show that the absolute Galois group Gal(\bar{\Q} /\Q) acts faithfully on the set of isomorphism classes of marked triangle curves, and on the set of connected components of marked moduli spaces of surfaces isogenous to a higher product (these are the free quotients of a product C_1 x C_2 of curves of respective genera g_1, g_2 >= 2 by the action of a finite group G). We show then, using again the surfaces isogenous to a product, first that it acts faithfully on the set of connected components of moduli spaces of surfaces of general type (amending an incorrect proof in a previous ArXiv version of the paper); and then, as a consequence, we obtain that for every element σ\in \Gal(\bar{\Q} /\Q), not in the conjugacy class of complex conjugation, there exists a surface of general type X such that X and the Galois conjugate surface X^σ have nonisomorphic fundamental groups. Using polynomials with only two critical values, we can moreover exhibit infinitely many explicit examples of such a situation.

Genus stabilization for moduli of curves with symmetries

In a previous paper, arXiv:1206.5498, we introduced a new homological invariant $\e$ for the faithful action of a finite group G on an algebraic curve. We show here that the moduli space of curves admitting a faithful action of a finite group G with a fixed homological invariant $\e$, if the genus g' of the quotient curve is sufficiently large, is irreducible (and non empty iff the class satisfies the condition which we define as 'admissibility'). In the unramified case, a similar result had been proven by Dunfield and Thurston using the classical invariant in the second homology group of G, H_2(G, \ZZ). We achieve our result showing that the stable classes are in bijection with the set of admissible classes $\e$.

The moduli space of even surfaces of general type with K^2 = 8, p_g = 4 and q = 0

We settle the first step for the classification of surfaces of general type with K^2 = 8, p_g = 4 and q = 0, classifying the even surfaces (K is 2-divisible). The first even surfaces of general type with $K^2=8$, $p_g=4$ and $q=0$ were found by Oliverio as complete intersections of bidegree (6,6) in a weighted projective space P(1,1,2,3,3). In this article we prove that the moduli space of even surfaces of general type with K^2 = 8, p_g = 4 and q = 0 consists of two 35 -dimensional irreducible components intersecting in a codimension one subset (the first of these components is the closure of the open set considered by Oliverio). For the surfaces in the second component the canonical models are always singular, hence we get a new example of generically nonreduced moduli spaces. Our result gives a posteriori a complete description of the half-canonical rings of the above even surfaces. The method of proof is, we believe, the most interesting part of the paper. After describing the graded ring of a cone we are able, combining the explicit description of some subsets of the moduli space, some deformation theoretic arguments, and finally some local algebra arguments, to describe the whole moduli space. This is the first time that the classification of a class of surfaces can only be done using moduli theory: up to now first the surfaces were classified, on the basis of some numerical inequalities, or other arguments, and later on the moduli spaces were investigated.

Burniat-type surfaces and a new family of surfaces with p_g = 0, K^2 = 3

In this paper, one of a series devoted to the classification, the moduli spaces and the discovery of new surfaces of general type with geometric genus p_g= 0, we generalize a classical construction method due to Burniat (and revisited by Inoue), constructing surfaces with K^2 = 3 and a with a new fundamental group of order 16.

Inoue type manifolds and Inoue surfaces: a connected component of the moduli space of surfaces with K^2 = 7, p_g=0

We show that a family of minimal surfaces of general type with p_g = 0, K^2=7, constructed by Inoue in 1994, is indeed a connected component of the moduli space: indeed that any surface which is homotopically equivalent to an Inoue surface belongs to the Inoue family. The ideas used in order to show this result motivate us to give a new definition of varieties, which we propose to call Inoue-type manifolds: these are obtained as quotients \hat{X} / G, where \hat{X} is an ample divisor in a K(Γ, 1) projective manifold Z, and G is a finite group acting freely on \hat{X} . For these type of manifolds we prove a similar theorem to the above, even if weaker, that manifolds homotopically equivalent to Inoue-type manifolds are again Inoue-type manifolds.

Cayley forms and self dual varieties

Generalized Chow forms were introduced by Cayley for the case of 3-space, their zero set on the Grassmannian G(1,3) is either the set Z of lines touching a given space curve (the case of a `honest' Cayley form), or the set of lines tangent to a surface. Cayley gave some equations for F to be a generalized Cayley form, which should hold modulo the ideal generated by F and by the quadratic equation Q for G(1,3). Our main result is that F is a Cayley form if and only if Z = G(1,3) \cap {F=0} is equal to its dual variety. We also show that the variety of generalized Cayley forms is defined by quadratic equations, since there is a unique representative F_0 + Q F_1 of F, with F_0, F_1 harmonic, such that the harmonic projection of the Cayley equation is identically zero. We also give new equations for honest Cayley forms, but show with some calculations that the variety of honest Cayley forms does not seem to be defined by quadratic and cubic equations.

A Superficial Working Guide to Deformations and Moduli

This is the first part of a guide to deformations and moduli, especially viewed from the perspective of algebraic surfaces (the simplest higher dimensional varieties). It contains also new results, regarding the question of local homeomorphism between Kuranishi and Teichmueller space, and a survey of new results with Ingrid Bauer, concerning the discrepancy between the deformation of the action of a group G on a minimal models S, respectively the deformation of the action of G on the canonical model X. Here Def(S) maps properly onto Def(X), but the same does not hold for pairs: Def(S,G) does not map properly onto Def(X,G). Indeed the connected components of Def(S), in the case of tertiary Burniat surfaces, only map to locally closed sets. The last section contains anew result on some surfaces whise Albanese map has generic degree equal to 2.

The moduli space of Keum-Naie surfaces

Using a new description of Keum Naie surfaces and their fundamental group, we prove the following main result: Let S be a smooth complex projective surface which is homotopically equivalent to a Keum - Naie surface. Then S is a Keum - Naie surface. The connected component of the Gieseker moduli space corresponding to Keum - Naie surfaces is irreducible, normal, unirational of dimension 6.

Irreducibility of the space of dihedral covers of the projective line of a given numerical type

We show in this paper that the set of irreducible components of the family of Galois coverings of P^1_C with Galois group isomorphic to D_n is in bijection with the set of possible numerical types. In this special case the numerical type is the equivalence class (for automorphisms of D_n) of the function which to each conjugacy class \mathcal{C} in D_n associates the number of branch points whose local monodromy lies in the class \mathcal{C}.
