Rethinking Signaling Design for ISAC: From Pilot-Based to Payload-Based Sensing

Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) is emerging as a key enabler for 6G networks, with signaling design at the core of its evolution. This paper reviews the paradigm shift of ISAC signaling designs from pilot-aided sensing to data payload-based approaches, with a particular focus on how these techniques can be realized within existing 5G NR structures. We commence with the reuse of pilots and reference signals that exploit existing 5G New Radio (NR) structures for sensing. Then, we extend to more advanced approaches that integrate the data payload through novel constellation shaping, modulation bases, and pulse shaping filters. We highlight the opportunities and tradeoffs that arise when extending sensing from sparse pilot and reference signal resources to the full communication frame, emphasizing how constellation properties and modulation choices directly determine sensing performance. To illustrate practical feasibility, a case study on sensing-assisted NR Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) networks demonstrates how exploiting both reference signals and payload echoes can reduce signaling overhead and enable proactive beam management and handover.

Look Before Switch: Sensing-Assisted Handover in 5G NR V2I Networks

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) has emerged as a promising solution in addressing the challenges of high-mobility scenarios in 5G NR Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications. This paper proposes a novel sensing-assisted handover framework that leverages ISAC capabilities to enable precise beamforming and proactive handover decisions. Two sensing-enabled handover triggering algorithms are developed: a distance-based scheme that utilizes estimated spatial positioning, and a probability-based approach that predicts vehicle maneuvers using interacting multiple model extended Kalman filter (IMM-EKF) tracking. The proposed methods eliminate the need for uplink feedback and beam sweeping, thus significantly reducing signaling overhead and handover interruption time. A sensing-assisted NR frame structure and corresponding protocol design are also introduced to support rapid synchronization and access under vehicular mobility. Extensive link-level simulations using real-world map data demonstrate that the proposed framework reduces the average handover interruption time by over 50%, achieves lower handover rates, and enhances overall communication performance.

Ambiguity Function Analysis of AFDM Under Pulse-Shaped Random ISAC Signaling

This paper investigates the ambiguity function (AF) of the emerging affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) waveform for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) signaling under a pulse shaping regime. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form expression of the average squared discrete period AF (DPAF) for AFDM waveform without pulse shaping, revealing that the AF depends on the parameter $c_1$ and the kurtosis of random communication data, while being independent of the parameter $c_2$. As a step further, we conduct a comprehensive analysis on the AFs of various waveforms, including AFDM, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and orthogonal chirp-division multiplexing (OCDM). Our results indicate that all three waveforms exhibit the same number of regular depressions in the sidelobes of their AFs, which incurs performance loss for detecting and estimating weak targets. However, the AFDM waveform can flexibly control the positions of depressions by adjusting the parameter $c_1$, which motivates a novel design approach of the AFDM parameters to mitigate the adverse impact of depressions of the strong target on the weak target. Furthermore, a closed-form expression of the average squared DPAF for pulse-shaped random AFDM waveform is derived, which demonstrates that the pulse shaping filter generates the shaped mainlobe along the delay axis and the rapid roll-off sidelobes along the Doppler axis. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis and proposed design methodology for the AFDM modulation.

Enabling Network Policy Enforcement in Service Meshes

Portable service mesh implementations enable Layer 4 to Layer 7 policy enforcement across heterogeneous infrastructures, yet they depend on the underlying network's connectivity and policies. Layer 3 network policies govern IP traffic regardless of whether upper layers authorize the flow. While these policies are integral to security, correct enforcement often requires coordination across multiple teams, and achieving consistent policy behavior across heterogeneous environments is challenging. Studies show that most Kubernetes clusters do not enforce any network policies. We propose integrating Layer 3 network policy enforcement with service meshes to protect data-plane traffic in a portable, infrastructure-agnostic manner. This integration allows developers to define Layer 3-7 policies and to ensure enforcement across any infrastructure. Our solution builds an overlay Layer 3 network and enforces Layer 3 policies by routing traffic through specific policy enforcement points and applying default-deny principles with authorization keys. We prototyped our approach using Kubernetes and Istio and found that it adds less than 1ms of latency while supporting complex policies comparable to native Kubernetes network policies.

Rethinking HTTP API Rate Limiting: A Client-Side Approach

HTTP underpins modern Internet services, and providers enforce quotas to regulate HTTP API traffic for scalability and reliability. When requests exceed quotas, clients are throttled and must retry. Server-side enforcement protects the service. However, when independent clients' usage counts toward a shared quota, server-only controls are inefficient; clients lack visibility into others' load, causing their retry attempts to potentially fail. Indeed, retry timing is important since each attempt incurs costs and yields no benefit unless admitted. While centralized coordination could address this, practical limitations have led to widespread adoption of simple client-side strategies like exponential backoff. As we show, these simple strategies cause excessive retries and significant costs. We design adaptive client-side mechanisms requiring no central control, relying only on minimal feedback. We present two algorithms: ATB, an offline method deployable via service workers, and AATB, which enhances retry behavior using aggregated telemetry data. Both algorithms infer system congestion to schedule retries. Through emulations with real-world traces and synthetic datasets with up to 100 clients, we demonstrate that our algorithms reduce HTTP 429 errors by up to 97.3% compared to exponential backoff, while the modest increase in completion time is outweighed by the reduction in errors.

Discrete-Periodic Ambiguity Function of Random Communication Signals

This paper investigates the ambiguity function (AF) of communication signals carrying random data payloads, which is a fundamental metric characterizing sensing capability in ISAC systems. We first develop a unified analytical framework to evaluate the AF of communication-centric ISAC signals constructed from arbitrary orthonormal bases and independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) constellation symbols. Subsequently, we derive the discrete periodic ambiguity function (DP-AF) and provide closed-form expressions for its expected integrated sidelobe level (EISL) and average sidelobe level. Notably, we prove that the normalized EISL is invariant across all constellations and modulation bases. Finally, the theoretical findings are validated through simulations.

From OFDM to AFDM: Enabling Adaptive Integrated Sensing and Communication in High-Mobility Scenarios

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key feature of next-generation wireless networks, enabling a wide range of emerging applications such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which operate in high-mobility scenarios. Notably, the wireless channels within these applications typically exhibit severe delay and Doppler spreads. The latter causes serious communication performance degradation in the Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveform that is widely adopted in current wireless networks. To address this challenge, the recently proposed Doppler-resilient affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) waveform, which uses flexible chirp signals as subcarriers, shows great potential for achieving adaptive ISAC in high-mobility scenarios. This article provides a comprehensive overview of AFDM-ISAC. We begin by presenting the fundamentals of AFDM-ISAC, highlighting its inherent frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW)-like characteristics. Then, we explore its ISAC performance limits by analyzing its diversity order, ambiguity function (AF), and Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB). Finally, we present several effective sensing algorithms and opportunities for AFDM-ISAC, with the aim of sparking new ideas in this emerging field.

Planning Oriented Integrated Sensing and Communication

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) enables simultaneous localization, environment perception, and data exchange for connected autonomous vehicles. However, most existing ISAC designs prioritize sensing accuracy and communication throughput, treating all targets uniformly and overlooking the impact of critical obstacles on motion efficiency. To overcome this limitation, we propose a planning-oriented ISAC (PISAC) framework that reduces the sensing uncertainty of planning-bottleneck obstacles and expands the safe navigable path for the ego-vehicle, thereby bridging the gap between physical-layer optimization and motion-level planning. The core of PISAC lies in deriving a closed-form safety bound that explicitly links ISAC transmit power to sensing uncertainty, based on the Cramér-Rao Bound and occupancy inflation principles. Using this model, we formulate a bilevel power allocation and motion planning (PAMP) problem, where the inner layer optimizes the ISAC beam power distribution and the outer layer computes a collision-free trajectory under uncertainty-aware safety constraints. Comprehensive simulations in high-fidelity urban driving environments demonstrate that PISAC achieves up to 40% higher success rates and over 5% shorter traversal times than existing ISAC-based and communication-oriented benchmarks, validating its effectiveness in enhancing both safety and efficiency.

Open Multimodal Retrieval-Augmented Factual Image Generation

Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) have achieved remarkable progress in generating photorealistic and prompt-aligned images, but they often produce outputs that contradict verifiable knowledge, especially when prompts involve fine-grained attributes or time-sensitive events. Conventional retrieval-augmented approaches attempt to address this issue by introducing external information, yet they are fundamentally incapable of grounding generation in accurate and evolving knowledge due to their reliance on static sources and shallow evidence integration. To bridge this gap, we introduce ORIG, an agentic open multimodal retrieval-augmented framework for Factual Image Generation (FIG), a new task that requires both visual realism and factual grounding. ORIG iteratively retrieves and filters multimodal evidence from the web and incrementally integrates the refined knowledge into enriched prompts to guide generation. To support systematic evaluation, we build FIG-Eval, a benchmark spanning ten categories across perceptual, compositional, and temporal dimensions. Experiments demonstrate that ORIG substantially improves factual consistency and overall image quality over strong baselines, highlighting the potential of open multimodal retrieval for factual image generation.

Foundation Models for Scientific Discovery: From Paradigm Enhancement to Paradigm Transition

Foundation models (FMs), such as GPT-4 and AlphaFold, are reshaping the landscape of scientific research. Beyond accelerating tasks such as hypothesis generation, experimental design, and result interpretation, they prompt a more fundamental question: Are FMs merely enhancing existing scientific methodologies, or are they redefining the way science is conducted? In this paper, we argue that FMs are catalyzing a transition toward a new scientific paradigm. We introduce a three-stage framework to describe this evolution: (1) Meta-Scientific Integration, where FMs enhance workflows within traditional paradigms; (2) Hybrid Human-AI Co-Creation, where FMs become active collaborators in problem formulation, reasoning, and discovery; and (3) Autonomous Scientific Discovery, where FMs operate as independent agents capable of generating new scientific knowledge with minimal human intervention. Through this lens, we review current applications and emerging capabilities of FMs across existing scientific paradigms. We further identify risks and future directions for FM-enabled scientific discovery. This position paper aims to support the scientific community in understanding the transformative role of FMs and to foster reflection on the future of scientific discovery. The capacity-maximization design philosophy has driven the growth of wireless networks for decades. However, with the slowdown in recent data traffic demand, the mobile industry can no longer rely solely on communication services to sustain development. In response, Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) has emerged as a transformative solution, embedding sensing capabilities into communication networks to enable multifunctional wireless systems. This paradigm shift expands the role of networks from sole data transmission to versatile platforms supporting diverse applications. In this review, we provide a bird's-eye view of ISAC for new researchers, highlighting key challenges, opportunities, and application scenarios to guide future exploration in this field.

I$^3$-MRec: Invariant Learning with Information Bottleneck for Incomplete Modality Recommendation

Multimodal recommender systems (MRS) improve recommendation performance by integrating complementary semantic information from multiple modalities. However, the assumption of complete multimodality rarely holds in practice due to missing images and incomplete descriptions, hindering model robustness and generalization. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel method called \textbf{I$^3$-MRec}, which uses \textbf{I}nvariant learning with \textbf{I}nformation bottleneck principle for \textbf{I}ncomplete \textbf{M}odality \textbf{Rec}ommendation. To achieve robust performance in missing modality scenarios, I$^3$-MRec enforces two pivotal properties: (i) cross-modal preference invariance, ensuring consistent user preference modeling across varying modality environments, and (ii) compact yet effective multimodal representation, as modality information becomes unreliable in such scenarios, reducing the dependence on modality-specific information is particularly important. By treating each modality as a distinct semantic environment, I$^3$-MRec employs invariant risk minimization (IRM) to learn preference-oriented representations. In parallel, a missing-aware fusion module is developed to explicitly simulate modality-missing scenarios. Built upon the Information Bottleneck (IB) principle, the module aims to preserve essential user preference signals across these scenarios while effectively compressing modality-specific information. Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate that I$^3$-MRec consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art MRS methods across various modality-missing scenarios, highlighting its effectiveness and robustness in practical applications.

Probabilistic Constellation Shaping for OFDM ISAC Signals Under Temporal-Frequency Filtering

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is considered an innovative technology in sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, where utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals for sensing provides a cost-effective solution for implementing ISAC. However, the sensing performance of matched and mismatched filtering schemes can be significantly deteriorated due to the signaling randomness induced by finite-alphabet modulations with nonconstant modulus, such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Therefore, improving sensing performance without significantly compromising communication capability (i.e., maintaining randomness), remains a challenging task. To that end, we propose a unified probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) framework that is compatible with both matched and mismatched filtering schemes, by maximizing the communication rate while imposing constraints on mean square error (MSE) of sensing channel state information (CSI), power, and probability distribution. Specifically, the MSE of sensing CSI is leveraged to optimize sensing capability, which is illustrated to be a more comprehensive metric compared to the output SNR after filtering (SNRout) and integrated sidelobes ratio (ISLR). Additionally, the internal relationships among these three sensing metrics are explicitly analyzed. Finally, both simulations and field measurements validate the efficiency of proposed PCS approach in achieving a flexible S&C trade-off, as well as its credibility in enhancing 6G wireless transmission in real-world scenarios.

LPCVAE: A Conditional VAE with Long-Term Dependency and Probabilistic Time-Frequency Fusion for Time Series Anomaly Detection

Time series anomaly detection(TSAD) is a critical task in signal processing field, ensuring the reliability of complex systems. Reconstruction-based methods dominate in TSAD. Among these methods, VAE-based methods have achieved promising results. Existing VAE-based methods suffer from the limitation of single-window feature and insufficient leveraging of long-term time and frequency information. We propose a Conditional Variational AutoEncoder with Long-term dependency and Probabilistic time-frequency fusion, named LPCVAE. LPCVAE introduces LSTM to capture long-term dependencies beyond windows. It further incorporates a Product-of-Experts (PoE) mechanism for adaptive and distribution-level probabilistic fusion. This design effectively mitigates time-frequency information loss. Extensive experiments on four public datasets demonstrate it outperforms state-of-the-art methods. The results confirm that integrating long-term time and frequency representations with adaptive fusion yields a robust and efficient solution for TSAD.

FLEx: Personalized Federated Learning for Mixture-of-Experts LLMs via Expert Grafting

Federated instruction tuning of large language models (LLMs) is challenged by significant data heterogeneity across clients, demanding robust personalization. The Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, where experts can specialize in distinct data patterns, presents a natural architectural solution to this challenge. The inherent sparsity of the MoE architecture, achieved by selectively activating experts, poses a significant challenge to its integration with federated learning (FL). Conventional FL frameworks, designed for dense models, naively aggregate all expert parameters irrespective of their local activation patterns. This naive approach not only undermines MoE's dynamic sparsity but also risks corrupting the world knowledge within pretrained experts. To address this, we propose FLEx (Federated LLMs with Personalized Experts), a novel framework that leverages pretrained MoE-based LLMs for efficient personalization. By aggregating only the shared non-expert parameters, FLEx significantly reduces communication overhead and preserves the world knowledge stored within the frozen pretrained experts. For personalization, we introduce a novel expert grafting mechanism that leverages dynamic sparsity to construct a client-specific expert from selected components of pretrained experts, tailored to local data. This grafted expert is then fine-tuned locally alongside the gating mechanism. This joint training enables the model to learn when to leverage the shared knowledge from frozen experts and when to employ the personalized one. Evaluations on diverse, non-IID instruction tuning datasets show that FLEx consistently outperforms federated baselines on average, while demonstrating strong knowledge preservation on the knowledge-driven benchmark MMLU. Doppler-Based Multistatic Drone Tracking via Cellular Downlink Signals

In this paper, a multistatic Doppler sensing system is proposed for the drone tracking via downlink Long-Term Evolution (LTE) signals. Specifically, the LTE base stations (BSs) are exploited as signal illuminators, and three passive sensing receivers are deployed at different locations to detect the bistatic Doppler frequencies of a target drone from received downlink signals. It is shown that even without the measurements of BS-drone-receiver range and angle, the Doppler measurements could provide sufficient information for trajectory tracking. Particularly, the trajectory of the target drone, consisting of the initial position and velocities of all the time slots, can be reconstructed by solving a minimum mean-squared error problem according to the above Doppler measurements. It is demonstrated by experiment that although the target drone and all the sensing receivers are around 200 meters away from the illuminating BSs, the complicated trajectories can be tracked with 90% errors below 90 centimeters. Since this accuracy is notably higher than the typical range resolution of LTE signals, the demonstration shows that drone trajectory tracking with a high accuracy could be feasible solely according to Doppler detection, as long as the deployment density of receivers is sufficiently high.

Toward Multi-Functional LAWNs with ISAC: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Road Ahead

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a foundational technology for future low-altitude wireless networks (LAWNs), enabling real-time environmental perception and data exchange across aerial-ground systems. In this article, we first explore the roles of ISAC in LAWNs from both node-level and network-level perspectives. We highlight the performance gains achieved through hierarchical integration and cooperation, wherein key design trade-offs are demonstrated. Apart from physical-layer enhancements, emerging LAWN applications demand broader functionalities. To this end, we propose a multi-functional LAWN framework that extends ISAC with capabilities in control, computation, wireless power transfer, and large language model (LLM)-based intelligence. We further provide a representative case study to present the benefits of ISAC-enabled LAWNs and the promising research directions are finally outlined.

Calogero-Sutherland-type quantum systems, generalized hypergeometric functions and superintegrability for integral chains

We reinvestigate the Calogero-Sutherland-type (CS-type) models and generalized hypergeometric functions. We construct the generalized CS operators for circular, Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi and Bessel cases and establish the generalized Lassalle-Nekrasov correspondence. A family of operators are constructed based on the spherical degenerate double affine Hecke algebra. In terms of these operators, we provide concise representations and constraints for the generalized hypergeometric functions. We analyze the superintegrability for the $β$-deformed integrals, where the measures are associated with the corresponding ground state wave functions of Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi and Bessel type CS models. Then based on the generalized Laplace transformation of Jack polynomials, we construct certain two integral chains and analyze the superintegrability property.
