Channel Modeling for Ultraviolet Non-Line-of-Sight Communications Incorporating an Obstacle

Existing studies on ultraviolet (UV) non-line-of-sight (NLoS) channel modeling primarily focus on scenarios without any obstacle, which makes them unsuitable for small transceiver elevation angles in most cases. To address this issue, a UV NLoS channel model incorporating an obstacle was investigated in this paper, where the impacts of atmospheric scattering and obstacle reflection on UV signals were both taken into account. To validate the proposed model, we compared it to the related Monte-Carlo photon-tracing (MCPT) model that had been verified by outdoor experiments. Numerical results manifest that the path loss curves obtained by the proposed model agree well with those determined by the MCPT model, while its computation complexity is lower than that of the MCPT model. This work discloses that obstacle reflection can effectively reduce the channel path loss of UV NLoS communication systems.

Optical IRS for Visible Light Communication: Modeling, Design, and Open Issues

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) offers a new and effective approach to resolving the line-of-sight blockage issue in visible light communication (VLC) by enabling redirection of light to bypass obstacles, thereby dramatically enhancing indoor VLC coverage and reliability. This article provides a comprehensive overview of OIRS for VLC, including channel modeling, design techniques, and open issues. First, we present the characteristics of OIRS-reflected channels and introduce two practical models, namely, optics model and association model, which are then compared in terms of applicable conditions, configuration methods, and channel parameters. Next, under the more practically appealing association model, we discuss the main design techniques for OIRS-aided VLC systems, including beam alignment, channel estimation, and OIRS reflection optimization. Finally, open issues are identified to stimulate future research in this area.

Channel Estimation for Optical IRS-Assisted VLC System via Spatial Coherence

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has been considered a promising technology for visible light communication (VLC) by constructing visual line-of-sight propagation paths to address the signal blockage issue. However, the existing works on OIRSs are mostly based on perfect channel state information (CSI), whose acquisition appears to be challenging due to the passive nature of the OIRS. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a customized channel estimation algorithm for OIRSs. Specifically, we first unveil the OIRS spatial coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance in closed form. Based on this property, a spatial sampling-based algorithm is proposed to estimate the OIRS-reflected channel, by dividing the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimating their associated CSI, followed by an interpolation to retrieve the full CSI. Simulation results validate the derived OIRS spatial coherence and demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed OIRS channel estimation algorithm.

Channel Estimation for Optical Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted VLC System: A Joint Space-Time Sampling Approach

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has attracted increasing attention due to its capability of overcoming signal blockages in visible light communication (VLC), an emerging technology for the next-generation advanced transceivers. However, current works on OIRS predominantly assume known channel state information (CSI), which is essential to practical OIRS configuration. To bridge such a gap, this paper proposes a new and customized channel estimation protocol for OIRSs under the alignment-based channel model. Specifically, we first unveil OIRS spatial and temporal coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance and the coherence time in closed form. Next, to achieve fast beam alignment over different coherence time, we propose to dynamically tune the rotational angles of the OIRS reflecting elements following a geometric optics-based non-uniform codebook. Given the above beam alignment, we propose an efficient joint space-time sampling-based algorithm to estimate the OIRS channel. In particular, we divide the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimate their associated CSI, followed by a spacetime interpolation to retrieve full CSI for other non-aligned transceiver antennas. Numerical results validate our theoretical analyses and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed OIRS channel estimation scheme as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Optical Integrated Sensing and Communication: Architectures, Potentials and Challenges

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a crucial component of future mobile networks and has gained much interest in both academia and industry. Similar to the emergence of radio-frequency (RF) ISAC, the integration of free space optical communication and optical sensing yields optical ISAC (O-ISAC), which is regarded as a powerful complement to its RF counterpart. In this article, we first introduce the generalized system structure of O-ISAC, and then elaborate on three advantages of O-ISAC, i.e., increasing communication rate, enhancing sensing precision, and reducing interference. Next, waveform design and resource allocation of O-ISAC are discussed based on pulsed waveform, constant-modulus waveform, and multi-carrier waveform. Furthermore, we put forward future trends and challenges of O-ISAC, which are expected to provide some valuable directions for future research.

Motivic cluster multiplication formulas in 2-Calabi-Yau categories

We introduce a notion of motivic cluster characters via virtual Poincaré polynomials, and prove a motivic version of multiplication formulas obtained by Chen-Xiao-Xu for weighted quantum cluster characters associated to a 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ with a cluster tilting object. Furthermore, a refined form of this formula is also given. When $\mathcal{C}$ is the cluster category of an acyclic quiver, our certain refined multiplication formula is a motivic version of the multiplication formula in [International Mathematics Research Notices, rnad172(2023)].

Weak antilocalization and localization in Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (111) thin films by reactive solid phase epitaxy

Thin films of the pyrochlore iridates along the [111] direction have drawn significant attention to investigate exotic correlated topological phenomena. Here, we report the fabrication of Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ thin films via reactive solid phase epitaxy using the pulsed laser deposition technique. We mainly focus on the transport properties of the films below the magnetic phase transition at 105 K. Analyses on the temperature and the field dependences of resistivity unveil the presence of weak antilocalization, a characteristic signature of the Weyl semimetallic state that has been "buried" by magnetism. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the contribution from many-body interactions in Eu2Ir2O7 thin films is enhanced at lower temperatures and competes with the weak antilocalization effect, and eventually drives the crossover to weak localization at 2 K.

Free Space Optical Integrated Sensing and Communication Based on DCO-OFDM: Performance Metrics and Resource Allocation

As one of the six usage scenarios of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication system, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has garnered considerable attention, and numerous studies have been conducted on radio-frequency (RF)-ISAC. Benefitting from the communication and sensing capabilities of an optical system, free space optical (FSO)-ISAC becomes a potential complement to RF-ISAC. In this paper, a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) scheme is proposed for FSO-ISAC. To derive the spectral efficiency for communication and the Fisher information for sensing as performance metrics, we model the clipping noise of DCO-OFDM as additive colored Gaussian noise to obtain the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the derived performance metrics, joint power allocation problems are formulated for both communication-centric and sensing-centric scenarios. In addition, the non-convex joint optimization problems are decomposed into sub-problems for DC bias and subcarriers, which can be solved by block coordinate descent algorithms. Furthermore, numerical simulations demonstrate the proposed algorithms and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing functionalities of the OFDM-based FSO-ISAC system.

Free Space Optical Communication for Inter-Satellite Link: Architecture, Potentials and Trends

The sixth-generation (6G) network is expected to achieve global coverage based on the space-air-ground integrated network, and the latest satellite network will play an important role in it. The introduction of inter-satellite links (ISLs) can significantly improve the throughput of the satellite network, and recently gets lots of attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, we illustrate the advantages of using the laser for ISLs due to its longer communication distance, higher data speed, and stronger security. Specifically, space-borne laser terminals with the acquisition, pointing and tracking mechanism which realize long-distance communication are illustrated, advanced modulation and multiplexing modes that make high communication rates possible are introduced, and the security of ISLs ensured by the characteristics of both laser and the optical channel is also analyzed. Moreover, some open issues such as advanced optical beam steering, routing and scheduling algorithm, and integrated sensing and communication are discussed to direct future research.

Magnetism and berry phase manipulation in an emergent structure of perovskite ruthenate by (111) strain engineering

The interplay among symmetry of lattices, electronic correlations, and Berry phase of the Bloch states in solids has led to fascinating quantum phases of matter. A prototypical system is the magnetic Weyl candidate SrRuO3, where designing and creating electronic and topological properties on artificial lattice geometry is highly demanded yet remains elusive. Here, we establish an emergent trigonal structure of SrRuO3 by means of heteroepitaxial strain engineering along the [111] crystallographic axis. Distinctive from bulk, the trigonal SrRuO3 exhibits a peculiar XY-type ferromagnetic ground state, with the coexistence of high-mobility holes likely from linear Weyl bands and low-mobility electrons from normal quadratic bands as carriers. The presence of Weyl nodes are further corroborated by capturing intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, acting as momentum-space sources of Berry curvatures. The experimental observations are consistent with our first-principles calculations, shedding light on the detailed band topology of trigonal SrRuO3 with multiple pairs of Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Our findings signify the essence of magnetism and Berry phase manipulation via lattice design and pave the way towards unveiling nontrivial correlated topological phenomena.

Improving Sequential Recommendation Models with an Enhanced Loss Function

There has been a growing interest in benchmarking sequential recommendation models and reproducing/improving existing models. For example, Rendle et al. improved matrix factorization models by tuning their parameters and hyperparameters. Petrov and Macdonald developed a more efficient and effective implementation of BERT4Rec, which resolved inconsistencies in performance comparison between BERT4Rec and SASRec in previous works. In particular, BERT4Rec and SASRec share a similar network structure, with the main difference lying in their training objective/loss function. Therefore, we analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used loss functions in sequential recommendation and proposed an improved loss function that leverages their strengths. We conduct extensive experiments on two influential open-source libraries, and the results demonstrate that our improved loss function significantly enhances the performance of GRU4Rec, SASRec, SR-GNN, and S3Rec models, improving their benchmarks significantly. Furthermore, the improved SASRec benchmark outperforms BERT4Rec on the ML-1M and Beauty datasets and achieves similar results to BERT4Rec on the ML-20M and Steam datasets. We also reproduce the results of the BERT4Rec model on the Beauty dataset. Finally, we provide a comprehensive explanation of the effectiveness of our improved loss function through experiments. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/Li-fAngyU/sequential_rec.

Optical Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO VLC: Channel Modeling and Capacity Characterization

Although the multi-antenna or so-called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission has been the enabling technology for the past generations of radio-frequency (RF)-based wireless communication systems, its application to the visible light communication (VLC) still faces a critical challenge as the MIMO spatial multiplexing gain can be hardly attained in VLC channels due to their strong spatial correlation. In this paper, we tackle this problem by deploying the optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) in the environment to boost the capacity of MIMO VLC. Firstly, based on the extremely near-field channel condition in VLC, we propose a new channel model for OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC and reveal its peculiar ``no crosstalk'' property, where the OIRS reflecting elements can be respectively configured to align with one pair of transmitter and receiver antennas without causing crosstalk to each other. Next, we characterize the OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC capacities under different practical power constraints and then proceed to maximize them by jointly optimizing the OIRS element alignment and transmitter emission power. In particular, for optimizing the OIRS element alignment, we propose two algorithms, namely, location-aided interior-point algorithm and log-det-based alternating optimization algorithm, to balance the performance versus complexity trade-off; while the optimal transmitter emission power is derived in closed form. Numerical results are provided, which validate the capacity improvement of OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC against the VLC without OIRS and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithms compared to baseline schemes.

Engineered Kondo screening and nonzero Berry phase in SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Controlling the interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons at the oxide interfaces can lead to exotic magnetic states. Here we devise SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures with varied thickness of the LaTiO3 layer (n monolayers) to investigate the magnetic interactions in the two-dimensional electron gas system. The heterostructures exhibit significant Kondo effect when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), manifesting the strong interaction between the itinerant electrons and the localized magnetic moments at the interfaces, while the Kondo effect is greatly inhibited when n = 20. Notably, distinct Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed and a nonzero Berry phase of π is extracted when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), which is absent in the heterostructure with thicker LaTiO3 layer (n = 20). The observed phenomena are consistently interpreted as a result of sub-band splitting and symmetry breaking due to the interplay between the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic orderings in the heterostructures. Our findings provide a route for exploring and manipulating nontrivial electronic band structures at complex oxide interfaces.

Direct probing of a large spin-orbit coupling in the FeSe superconducting monolayer on STO: Evidence for nontrivial topological states

In condensed-matter physics spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a fundamental physical interaction, which describes how the electrons' spin couples to their orbital motion. It is the source of a vast variety of fascinating phenomena in solids such as topological phases of matter, quantum spin Hall states, and many other exotic quantum states. Although in most theoretical descriptions of the phenomenon of high-temperature superconductivity SOC has been neglected, including this interaction can, in principle, revise the microscopic picture of superconductivity in these compounds. Not only the interaction leading to Cooper pairing but also the symmetry of the order parameter and the topological character of the involved states can be determined by SOC. Here by preforming energy-, momentum-, and spin-resolved spectroscopy experiments with an unprecedented resolution we demonstrate that while probing the dynamic charge response of the FeSe monolayer on strontium titanate, a prototype two dimensional high-temperature superconductor using slow electrons, the scattering cross-section shows a considerable spin asymmetry. We unravel the origin of the observed spin asymmetry by developing a model in which SOC is taken into consideration. Our analysis indicates that SOC in this two dimensional superconductor is rather strong. We anticipate that such a strong SOC can have several serious consequences on the electronic structures and can lead to the formation of topological states. Moreover, a sizable SOC can compete with other pairing scenarios and is crucial for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

Direct evidence of a charge depletion region at the interface of Van der Waals monolayers and dielectric oxides: The case of superconducting FeSe/STO

The discovery of two dimensional Van der Waals materials has opened up several possibilities for designing novel devices. Yet a more promising way of designing exotic heterostutures with improved physical properties is to grow a monolayer of these materials on a substrate. For example, in the field of superconductivity it has been demonstrated that the superconducting transition temperature of a monolayer of FeSe grown on some oxide substrates e.g., strontium titanate (STO) is by far higher than its bulk counterpart. Although the system has been considered as a model system for understanding the phenomenon of high-temperature superconductivity, the physical mechanism responsible for this high transition temperature is still highly under debate. Here using momentum and energy resolved high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy we probe the dynamic charge response of the FeSe/STO(001) system and demonstrate that the frequency- and momentum-dependent dynamic charge response is not compatible with a simple film/substrate model. Our analysis reveals the existence of a depletion region at the interface between this Van der Waals monolayer and the substrate. The presence of the depletion layer, accompanied with a considerably large charge transfer from STO into the FeSe monolayer, leads to a strong renormalization of the STO energy bands and a substantial band bending at the interface. Our results shed light on the electronic complexities of the FeSe/oxide interfaces and pave the way of designing novel low-dimensional high-temperature superconductors through interface engineering. We anticipate that the observed phenomenon is rather general and can take place in many two dimensional Van der Waals monolayers brought in contact with dielectric oxides or semiconducting substrates.

Imaging the quantum melting of Wigner crystal with electronic quasicrystal order

Wigner crystal, as the most fundamental exemplification where the many-body interaction forges the electrons into a solid, experiences an intriguing quantum melting where diverse intermediate phases are predicted to emerge near the quantum critical point. Indications of exotic Wigner orders like bubble phase, liquid-solid phase, and anisotropic Wigner phase have been established by optical or transport measurements. However, the direct visualization of lattice-scale melting order, which is of paramount importance to unequivocally uncover the melting nature, remains challenging and lacking. Noting that Wigner crystals have been achieved in the fractionally filled moire superlattice recently, here, via scanning tunneling microscope, we image the quantum melting of Wigner solid realized by further varying the moire superstructure in monolayer YbCl3/graphene heterostructure. The Wigner solid is constructed on the two-dimensional ensemble of interfacial electron-hole pairs derived from charge transfer. The interplay between certain moire potential and ionic potential leads to the quantum melting of Wigner solid evidenced by the emergence of electron-liquid characteristic, verifying the theoretical predictions. Particularly, akin to the classical quasicrystal made of atoms, a dodecagonal quasicrystal made of electrons, i.e., the Wigner quasicrytal, is visualized at the quantum melting point. In stark contrast to the incompressible Wigner solid, the Wigner quasicrytal hosts considerable liquefied nature unraveled by the interference ripples caused by scattering. By virtue of the two-dimensional charge transfer interface composed of monolayer heavy electron material and graphene, our discovery not only enriches the exploration and understanding of quantum solid-liquid melting, but also paves the way to directly probe the quantum critical order of correlated many-body system.
