Comment on "Scattering of light by a parity-time-symmetric dipole beyond the first Born approximation"

In [J. A. Rebouças and P. A. Brandão, Phys. Rev. A 104, 063514 (2021)] the authors compute the scattering amplitude for a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric double-delta-function potential in three dimensions by invoking the far-zone approximation and summing the resulting Born series. We show that the analysis of this paper suffers from a basic error. Therefore its results are inconclusive. We give an exact closed-form expression for the scattering amplitude of this potential.

Exceptional points and pseudo-Hermiticity in real potential scattering

We employ a recently-developed transfer-matrix formulation of scattering theory in two dimensions to study a class of scattering setups modeled by real potentials. The transfer matrix for these potentials is related to the time-evolution operator for an associated pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian operator $\widehat{\mathbf{H}}$ which develops an exceptional point for a discrete set of incident wavenumbers. We use the spectral properties of this operator to determine the transfer matrix of these potentials and solve their scattering problem. We apply our general results to explore the scattering of waves by a waveguide of finite length in two dimensions, where the source of the incident wave and the detectors measuring the scattered wave are positioned at spatial infinities while the interior of the waveguide, which is filled with an inactive material, forms a finite rectangular region of the space. The study of this model allows us to elucidate the physical meaning and implications of the presence of the real and complex eigenvalues of $\widehat{\mathbf{H}}$ and its exceptional points. Our results reveal the relevance of the concepts of pseudo-Hermitian operator and exceptional point in the standard quantum mechanics of closed systems where the potentials are required to be real.

Transfer matrix formulation of stationary scattering in 2D and 3D: A concise review of recent developments

We review a recently developed transfer matrix formulation of the stationary scattering in two and three dimensions where the transfer matrix is a linear operator acting in an infinite-dimensional function space. We discuss its utility in circumventing the ultraviolet divergences one encounters in solving the Lippman-Schwinger equation for delta-function potentials in two and three dimensions. We also use it to construct complex scattering potentials displaying perfect omnidirectional invisibility for frequencies below a freely preassigned cutoff.

Scattering by a collection of $δ$-function point and parallel line defects in two dimensions

Interaction of waves with point and line defects are usually described by $δ$-function potentials supported on points or lines. In two dimensions, the scattering problem for a finite collection of point defects or parallel line defects is exactly solvable. This is not true when both point and parallel line defects are present. We offer a detailed treatment of the scattering problem for finite collections of point and parallel line defects in two dimensions. In particular, we perform the necessary renormalization of the coupling constants of the point defects, introduce an approximation scheme which allows for an analytic calculation of the scattering amplitude and Green's function for the corresponding singular potential, investigate the consequences of perturbing this potential, and comment on the application of our results in the study of the geometric scattering of a particle moving on a curved surface containing point and line defects. Our results provide a basic framework for the study of spectral singularities and the corresponding lasing and antilasing phenomena in two-dimensional optical systems involving lossy and/or active thin wires and parallel thin plates.

Fundamental transfer matrix and dynamical formulation of stationary scattering in two and three dimensions

We offer a consistent dynamical formulation of stationary scattering in two and three dimensions that is based on a suitable multidimensional generalization of the transfer matrix. This is a linear operator acting in an infinite-dimensional function space which we can represent as a $2\times 2$ matrix with operator entries. This operator encodes the information about the scattering properties of the potential and enjoys an analog of the composition property of its one-dimensional ancestor. Our results improve an earlier attempt in this direction [Phys. Rev. A 93, 042707 (2016)] by elucidating the role of the evanescent waves. In particular, we show that a proper formulation of this approach requires the introduction of a pair of intertwined transfer matrices each related to the time-evolution operator for an effective non-unitary quantum system. We study the application of our findings in the treatment of the scattering problem for delta-function potentials in two and three dimensions and clarify its implicit regularization property which circumvents the singular terms appearing in the standard treatments of these potentials. We also discuss the utility of our approach in characterizing invisible (scattering-free) potentials and potentials for which the first Born approximation provides the exact expression for the scattering amplitude.

Anharmonic oscillator: A playground to get insight into renormalization

In the presence of interactions the frequency of a simple harmonic oscillator deviates from the noninteracting one. Various methods can be used to compute the changes to the frequency perturbatively. Some of them resemble the methods used in quantum field theory where the bare values of the parameters of the theory run when an interaction is added. In this paper, we review some of these techniques and introduce some new ones in line with quantum field theory methods. Moreover, we investigate the case of more than one oscillator to see how the frequencies of small oscillations change when non-linear terms are added to a linear system and observe an interesting beat phenomenon in degenerate coupled oscillatory systems.

Low-frequency scattering defined by the Helmholtz equation in one dimension

The Helmholtz equation in one dimension, which describes the propagation of electromagnetic waves in effectively one-dimensional systems, is equivalent to the time-independent Schrödinger equation. The fact that the potential term entering the latter is energy-dependent obstructs the application of the results on low-energy quantum scattering in the study of the low-frequency waves satisfying the Helmholtz equation. We use a recently developed dynamical formulation of stationary scattering to offer a comprehensive treatment of the low-frequency scattering of these waves for a general finite-range scatterer. In particular, we give explicit formulas for the coefficients of the low-frequency series expansion of the transfer matrix of the system which in turn allow for determining the low-frequency expansions of its reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients. Our general results reveal a number of interesting physical aspects of low-frequency scattering particularly in relation to permittivity profiles having balanced gain and loss.

Dynamical formulation of low-energy scattering in one dimension

The transfer matrix ${\mathbf{M}}$ of a short-range potential may be expressed in terms of the time-evolution operator for an effective two-level quantum system with a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This leads to a dynamical formulation of stationary scattering. We explore the utility of this formulation in the study of the low-energy behavior of the scattering data. In particular, for the exponentially decaying potentials, we devise a simple iterative scheme for computing terms of arbitrary order in the series expansion of ${\mathbf{M}}$ in powers of the wavenumber. The coefficients of this series are determined in terms of a pair of solutions of the zero-energy stationary Schrödinger equation. We introduce a transfer matrix for the latter equation, express it in terms of the time-evolution operator for an effective two-level quantum system, and use it to obtain a perturbative series expansion for the solutions of the zero-energy stationary Schrödinger equation. Our approach allows for identifying the zero-energy resonances for scattering potentials in both full line and half-line with zeros of the entries of the zero-energy transfer matrix of the potential or its trivial extension to the full line.

Transmission of low-energy scalar waves through a traversable wormhole

We study the scattering of low-energy massless and massive minimally coupled scalar fields by an asymptotically flat traversable wormhole. We provide a comprehensive treatment of this problem offering analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection amplitudes of the corresponding effective potential and the absorption cross section of the wormhole. Our results, which are based on a recently developed dynamical formulation of time-independent scattering theory, apply to a large class of wormhole spacetimes including a wormhole with a sharp transition, the Ellis wormhole, and a family of its generalizations.

Transfer matrix for long-range potentials

We extend the notion of the transfer matrix of potential scattering to a large class of long-range potentials $v(x)$ and derive its basic properties. We outline a dynamical formulation of the time-independent scattering theory for this class of potentials where we identify their transfer matrix with the $S$-matrix of a certain effective non-unitary two-level quantum system. For sufficiently large values of $|x|$, we express $v(x)$ as the sum of a short-range potential and an exactly solvable long-range potential. Using this result and the composition property of the transfer matrix, we outline an approximation scheme for solving the scattering problem for $v(x)$. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this scheme, we construct an exactly solvable long-range potential and compare the exact values of its reflection and transmission coefficients with those we obtain using our approximation scheme.

Transfer-matrix formulation of the scattering of electromagnetic waves and broadband invisibility in three dimensions

We develop a transfer-matrix formulation of the scattering of electromagnetic waves by a general isotropic medium which makes use of a notion of electromagnetic transfer matrix $\mathbf{M}$ that does not involve slicing of the scattering medium or discretization of some of the position- or momentum-space variables. This is a linear operator that we can express as a $4\times 4$ matrix with operator entries and identify with the S-matrix of an effective nonunitary quantum system. We use this observation to establish the composition property of $\mathbf{M}$, obtain an exact solution of the scattering problem for a non-magnetic point scatterer that avoids the divergences of the Green's function approaches, and prove a general invisibility theorem. The latter allows for an explicit characterization of a class of isotropic media ${\cal M}$ displaying perfect broadband invisibility for electromagnetic waves of arbitrary polarization provided that their wavenumber $k$ does not exceed a preassigned critical value $α$, i.e., ${\cal M}$ behaves exactly like vacuum for $k\leqα$. Generalizing this phenomenon, we introduce and study $α$-equivalent media that, by definition, have identical scattering features for $k\leqα$.

Quantum of the bare cosmological constant

We show that there exist scalar field theories with plausible one-particle states in general $D$ dimensional nonstationary curved spacetimes whose propagating modes are localized on $d\le D$ dimensional hypersurfaces, and the corresponding stress tensor resembles the bare cosmological constant $λ_B$ in the $D$ dimensional bulk. We show that nontrivial $d=1$ dimensional solutions correspond to $λ_B< 0$. Considering free scalar theories we find that for $d=2$ the symmetry of the parameter space of classical solutions corresponding to $λ_B\neq 0$ is $O(1,1)$ which enhances to $\mathbb{Z}_2\times{\rm Diff}(\mathbb{R}^1)$ at $λ_B=0$. For $d>2$ we obtain $O(d-1,1)$, $O(d-1)\times {\rm Diff}(\mathbb{R}^1)$ and $O(d-1,1)\times O(d-2)\times {\rm Diff}(\mathbb{R}^1)$ corresponding to, respectively, $λ_B<0$, $λ_B=0$ and $λ_B>0$.

Quasi-Exactly Solvable Scattering Problems, Exactness of the Born Approximation, and Broadband Unidirectional Invisibility in Two Dimensions

Achieving exact unidirectional invisibility in a finite frequency band has been an outstanding problem for many years. We offer a simple solution to this problem in two dimensions that is based on our solution to another more basic open problem of scattering theory, namely finding scattering potentials $v(x,y)$ in two dimensions whose scattering problem is exactly solvable for energies not exceeding a critical value $E_c$. This extends the notion of quasi-exact solvability to scattering theory and yields a simple condition under which the first Born approximation gives the exact expression for the scattering amplitude whenever the wavenumber for the incident wave is not greater than $α:=\sqrt{E_c}$. Because this condition only restricts the $y$-dependence of $v(x,y)$, we can use it to determine classes of such potentials that have certain desirable scattering features. This leads to a partial inverse scattering scheme that we employ to achieve perfect broadband unidirectional invisibility in two dimensions. We discuss an optical realization of the latter by identifying a class of two-dimensional isotropic active media that do not scatter incident TE waves with wavenumber in the range $(α/\sqrt 2,α]$ and source located at $x=\infty$, while scattering the same waves if their source is relocated to $x=-\infty$.

Potentials with Identical Scattering Properties Below a Critical Energy

A pair of scattering potentials are called $α$-equivalent if they have identical scattering properties for incident plane waves with wavenumber $k\leqα$ (energy $k^2\leqα^2$.) We use a recently developed multidimensional transfer-matrix formulation of scattering theory to obtain a simple criterion for $α$-equivalence of complex potentials in two and three dimensions.

Fermionic one-particle states in curved spacetimes

We show that a notion of one-particle state and the corresponding vacuum state exists in general curved backgrounds for spin $\frac{1}{2}$ fields. A curved spacetime can be equipped with a coordinate system in which the metric component $g_{--}=0$. We separate the component of the left-handed massless Dirac field which is annihilated by the null vector $\partial_-$ and compute the corresponding Feynman propagator. We find that the propagating modes are localized on two dimensional subspaces and the Feynman propagator is similar to the Feynman propagator of chiral fermions in two dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Therefore, it can be interpreted in terms of one-particle states and the corresponding vacuum state similarly to the second quantization in Minkowski spacetime.

A Class of Exactly Solvable Scattering Potentials in Two Dimensions, Entangled State Pair Generation, and a Grazing Angle Resonance Effect

We provide an exact solution of the scattering problem for the potentials of the form $v(x,y)=χ_a(x)[v_0(x)+ v_1(x)e^{iαy}]$, where $χ_a(x):=1$ for $x\in[0,a]$, $χ_a(x):=0$ for $x\notin[0,a]$, $v_j(x)$ are real or complex-valued functions, $χ_a(x)v_0(x)$ is an exactly solvable scattering potential in one dimension, and $α$ is a positive real parameter. If $α$ exceeds the wavenumber $k$ of the incident wave, the scattered wave does not depend on the choice of $v_1(x)$. In particular, $v(x,y)$ is invisible if $v_0(x)=0$ and $k<α$. For $k>α$ and $v_1(x)\neq 0$, the scattered wave consists of a finite number of coherent plane-wave pairs $ψ_n^\pm$ with wavevector: $\mathbf{k}_n=(\pm\sqrt{k^2-(nα)^2},nα)$, where $n=0,1,2,\cdots<k/α$. This generalizes to the scattering of wavepackets and suggests means for generating quantum states with a quantized component of momentum and pairs of states with an entangled momentum. We examine a realization of these potentials in terms of certain optical slabs. If $k=Nα$ for some positive integer $N$, $ψ_N^\pm$ coalesce and their amplitude diverge. If $k$ exceeds $Nα$ slightly, $ψ_N^\pm$ have a much larger amplitude than $ψ_n^\pm$ with $n<N$. This marks a resonance effect that arises for the scattered waves whose wavevector makes a small angle with the faces of the slab.

Exact Solution of the Two-Dimensional Scattering Problem for a Class of $δ$-Function Potentials Supported on Subsets of a Line

We use the transfer matrix formulation of scattering theory in two-dimensions to treat the scattering problem for a potential of the form $v(x,y)=ζ\,δ(ax+by)g(bx-ay)$ where $ζ,a$, and $b$ are constants, $δ(x)$ is the Dirac $δ$ function, and $g$ is a real- or complex-valued function. We map this problem to that of $v(x,y)=ζ\,δ(x)g(y)$ and give its exact and analytic solution for the following choices of $g(y)$: i) A linear combination of $δ$-functions, in which case $v(x,y)$ is a finite linear array of two-dimensional $δ$-functions; ii) A linear combination of $e^{iα_n y}$ with $α_n$ real; iii) A general periodic function that has the form of a complex Fourier series. In particular we solve the scattering problem for a potential consisting of an infinite linear periodic array of two-dimensional $δ$-functions. We also prove a general theorem that gives a sufficient condition for different choices of $g(y)$ to produce the same scattering amplitude within specific ranges of values of the wavelength $λ$. For example, we show that for arbitrary real and complex parameters, $a$ and $\mathfrak{z}$, the potentials $ \mathfrak{z} \sum_{n=-\infty}^\inftyδ(x)δ(y-an)$ and $a^{-1}\mathfrak{z}δ(x)[1+2\cos(2πy/a)]$ have the same scattering amplitude for $a< λ\leq 2a$.

Chiral fermions on 2D curved spacetimes

The theory of free Majorana-Weyl spinors is the prototype of conformal field theory in two dimensions in which the gravitational anomaly and the Weyl anomaly obstruct extending the flat spacetime results to curved backgrounds. In this paper, we investigate a quantization scheme in which the short distance singularity in the two-point function of chiral fermions on a two dimensional curved spacetime is given by the Green's function corresponding to the classical field equation. We compute the singular term in the Green's function explicitly and observe that the short distance limit is not well-defined in general. We identify constraints on the geometry which are necessary to resolve this problem. On such special backgrounds the theory has locally $c=\frac{1}{2}$ conformal symmetry.
