Perfect Broadband Invisibility in Isotropic Media with Gain and Loss

We outline a method for constructing effectively two-dimensional isotropic optical media that are perfectly and omnidirectionally invisible for both TE and TM waves provided that their wavenumber does not exceed a preassigned value $α$. This relies on the observation that a complex scattering potential $v(x,y)$ displays perfect invisibility for wavenumbers $k\leqα$ provided that its Fourier transform with respect to $y$, which we denote by $\tilde v(x,\mathfrak{K}_y)$, vanishes for $\mathfrak{K}_y\leq 2α$. We use this result to construct the permittivity profile for a realistic optical slab that is perfectly invisible in the wavenumber window $[0,α]$.

Decoherence in quantum systems in a static gravitational field

A small quantum system is studied which is a superposition of states localized in different positions in a static gravitational field. The time evolution of the correlation between different positions is investigated, and it is seen that there are two time scales for such an evolution (decoherence). Both time scales are inversely proportional to the red shift difference between the two points. These time scales correspond to decoherences which are linear and quadratic, respectively, in time.

Unidirectional Invisibility and Nonreciprocal Transmission in Two and Three Dimensions

We explore the phenomenon of unidirectional invisibility in two dimensions, examine its optical realizations, and discuss its three-dimensional generalization. In particular we construct an infinite class of unidirectionally invisible optical potentials that describe the scattering of normally incident transverse electric waves by an infinite planar slab with refractive-index modulations along both the normal directions to the electric field. A by-product of this investigation is a demonstration of nonreciprocal transmission in two dimensions. To elucidate this phenomenon we state and prove a general reciprocity theorem that applies to quantum scattering theory of real and complex potentials in two and three dimensions.

Transfer Matrix Formulation of Scattering Theory in Two and Three Dimensions

In one dimension one can dissect a scattering potential $ v(x) $ into pieces $ v_i(x) $ and use the notion of the transfer matrix to determine the scattering content of $ v(x) $ from that of $ v_i(x) $. This observation has numerous practical applications in different areas of physics. The problem of finding an analogous procedure in dimensions larger than one has been an important open problem for decades. We give a complete solution for this problem and discuss some of its applications. In particular we derive an exact expression for the scattering amplitude of the delta-function potential in two and three dimensions and a potential describing a slab laser with a surface line defect. We show that the presence of the defect makes the slab begin lasing for arbitrarily small gain coefficients.

Composition of Transfer Matrices for Potentials with Overlapping Support

For a pair of real or complex scattering potentials $v_j:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{C}$ ($j=1,2$) with support $I_j$ and transfer matrix $M_j$, the transfer matrix of $v_1+v_2$ is given by the product $M_2 M_1$ provided that $I_1$ lies to the left of $I_2$. We explore the prospects of generalizing this composition rule for the cases that $I_1$ and $I_2$ have a small intersection. In particular, we show that if $I_1$ and $I_2$ intersect in a finite closed interval of length $\ell$ in which both the potentials are analytic, then the lowest order correction to the above composition rule is proportional to $\ell^5$. This correction is of the order of $\ell^3$, if $v_1$ and $v_2$ are respectively analytic throughout this interval except at $x=\ell$ and $x=0$. We use these results to explore the superposition of a pair of unidirectionally invisible potentials with overlapping support.

Holographic anomaly in 3d f(Ric) gravity

By applying the holographic renormalization method to the metric formalism of f(Ric) gravity in three dimensions, we obtain the Brown-York boundary stress-tensor for backgrounds which asymptote to the locally AdS3 solution of Einstein gravity. The logarithmic divergence of the on-shell action can be subtracted by a non-covariant cut-off independent term which exchanges the trace anomaly for a gravitational anomaly. We show that the central charge can be determined by means of BTZ holography or in terms of the Hawking effect of a Schwarzschild black hole placed on the boundary.

Form field theory on Calabi-Yau threefold

We show how the natural Abelian duality of 2 and 3-form gravity theories on seven dimensional manifold CY3xS1, leads to an S-duality between 2 and 3-form theories on simply connected CY3. The massless sector of the 2-form field theory on CY3 corresponds to the A model string field theory. We discuss the complex structure independence of the 2-form theory for a general Kahler manifold and derive the holomorphic anomaly equations for simply connected CY3.

Gauge symmetries of systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom

For systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom, it is shown in [arXiv:hep-th/0303014] that first class constraints are Abelianizable if the Faddeev-Popov determinant is not vanishing for some choice of subsidiary constraints. Here, for irreducible first class constraint systems with SO(3) or SO(4) gauge symmetries, including a subset of coordinates in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, we explicitly determine the Abelianizable and non-Abelianizable classes of constraints. For the Abelianizable class, we explicitly solve the constraints to obtain the equivalent set of Abelian first class constraints. We show that for non-Abelianizable constraints there exist residual gauge symmetries which results in confinement-like phenomena.

Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Linear Media and Pseudo-Hermiticity

We express the electromagnetic field propagating in an arbitrary time-independent non-dispersive medium in terms of an operator that turns out to be pseudo-Hermitian for Hermitian dielectric and magnetic permeability tensors Epsilon and Mu. We exploit this property to determine the propagating field. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression for a planar field in an isotropic medium with Epsilon and Mu varying along the direction of the propagation. We also study the scattering of plane waves due to a localized inhomogeneity.

Kahler quantization of H*(T2,R) and modular forms

Kahler quantization of H1(T2,R) is studied. It is shown that this theory corresponds to a fermionic sigma-model targeting a noncommutative space. By solving the complex-structure moduli independence conditions, the quantum background independent wave function is obtained. We study the transformation of the wave function under modular transformation. It is shown that the transformation rule is characteristic to the operator ordering. Similar results are obtained for Kahler quantization of H2(T,R).

$ϕ^4$-Model and Holography in Four Dimensions

The generating function of correlators of dual operators on the boundary of (A)dS4 space corresponding to the conformally coupled $ϕ^4$-model is obtained up to first order in the coupling constant by using the conformal map between massless scalar fields in (Euclidean) Minkowski space and conformally coupled scalars on (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space. Some exact classical solutions of the nonlinear wave equation of massless (conformally coupled) $ϕ^3$, $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$-models in D=6,4,3 Euclidean/Minkowski (AdS/dS) spaces are obtained.

$ϕ^4$ model on a circle

The four dimensional critical scalar theory at equilibrium with a thermal bath at temperature $T$ is considered. The thermal equilibrium state is labeled by $n$ the winding number of the vacua around the compact imaginary-time direction which compactification radius is 1/T. The effective action for zero modes is a three dimensional $ϕ^4$ scalar theory in which the mass of the the scalar field is proportional to $n/T$ resembling the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction. Similar results are obtained for the theory at zero temperature but in a one-dimensional potential well. Since parity is violated by the vacua with odd vacuum number $n$, in such cases there is also a cubic term in the effective potential. The $ϕ^3$-term contribution to the vacuum shift at one-loop is of the same order of the contribution from the $ϕ^4$-term in terms of the coupling constant of the four dimensional theory but becomes negligible as $n$ tends to infinity. Finally, the relation between the scalar classical vacua and the corresponding SU(2) instantons on $S^1\times{\mathbb R}^3$ in the 't Hooft ansatz is studied.

Fubini vacua as a classical de Sitter vacua

The Fubini's idea to introduce a fundamental scale of hadron phenomena by means of dilatation non-invariant vacuum state in the frame work of a scale invariant Lagrangian field theory is recalled. The Fubini vacua is invariant under the de Sitter subgroup of the full conformal group. We obtain a finite entropy for the quantum state corresponding to the classical Fubini vacua in Euclidean space-time resembeling the entropy of the de Sitter vacua. In Minkowski space-time it is shown that the Fubini vacua is mainly a bath of radiation with Rayleigh-Jeans distribution for the low energy radiation. In four dimensions, the critical scalar theory is shown to be equivalent to the Einstein field equation in the ansatz of conformally flat metrics and to the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the 't Hooft ansatz. In D-dimensions, the Hitchin formula for the information geometry metric of the moduli space of instantons is used to obtain the information geometry of the free-parameter space of the Fubini vacua which is shown to be a (D+1)-dimensional AdS space. Considering the Fubini vacua as a de Sitter vacua, the corresponding cosmological constant is shown to be given by the coupling constant of the critical scalar theory. In Minkowski spacetime it is shown that the Fubini vacua is equivalent to an open FRW universe.

Kahler Quantization of H3(CY3,R) and the Holomorphic Anomaly

Studying the quadratic field theory on seven dimensional spacetime constructed by a direct product of Calabi-Yau three-fold by a real time axis, with phase space being the third cohomology of the Calabi-Yau three-fold, the generators of translation along moduli directions of Calabi-Yau three-fold are constructed. The algebra of these generators is derived which take a simple form in canonical coordinates. Applying the Dirac method of quantization of second class constraint systems, we show that the Schrödinger equations corresponding to these generators are equivalent to the holomorphic anomaly equations if one defines the action functional of the quadratic field theory with a proper factor one-half.

Non-linear Laplace equation, de Sitter vacua and information geometry

Three exact solutions say $ϕ_0$ of massless scalar theories on Euclidean space, i.e. $D=6 ϕ^3$, $D=4 ϕ^4$ and $D=3 ϕ^6$ models are obtained which share similar properties. The information geometry of their moduli spaces coincide with the Euclidean ${AdS}_7$, ${AdS}_5$ and ${AdS}_4$ respectively on which $ϕ_0$ can be described as a stable tachyon. In D=4 we recognize that the SU(2) instanton density is proportional to $ϕ_0^4$. The original action $S[ϕ]$ written in terms of new scalars ${\tilde ϕ}=ϕ-ϕ_0$ is shown to be equivalent to an interacting scalar theory on $D$-dimensional de Sitter background.

dS/CFT Correspondence from a Holographic Description of Massless Scalar Fields in Minkowski Space-Time

We solve Klein-Gordon equation for massless scalars on d+1 dimensional Minkowski (Euclidean) space in terms of the Cauchy data on the hypersurface t=0. By inserting the solution into the action of massless scalars in Minkowski (Euclidean) space we obtain the action of dual theory on the boundary t=0 which is exactly the holographic dual of conformally coupled scalars on d+1 dimensional (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space obtained in (A)dS/CFT correspondence. The observed equivalence of dual theories is explained using the one-to-one map between conformally coupled scalar fields on Minkowski (Euclidean) space and (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space which is an isomorphism between the hypersurface t=0 of Minkowski (Euclidean) space and the boundary of (A)dS space.

Non-Abelianizable First Class Constraints

We study the necessary and sufficient conditions on Abelianizable first class constraints. The necessary condition is derived from topological considerations on the structure of gauge group. The sufficient condition is obtained by applying the theorem of implicit function in calculus and studying the local structure of gauge orbits. Since the sufficient condition is necessary for existence of proper gauge fixing conditions, we conclude that in the case of a finite set of non-Abelianizable first class constraints, the Faddeev-Popov determinant is vanishing for any choice of subsidiary constraints. This result is explicitly examined for SO(3) gauge invariant model.
