Bose Gases Near Resonance: renormalized interactions in a condensate

We study the interplay between few- and many-body physics in Bose gases near resonance. The effect of condensates on the two-body running coupling constant is investigated via imposing a boundary condition on a self-consistent renormalization flow equation. Bose gases are found to become nearly fermionized when the chemical potential as a function of scattering lengths reaches a maximum and the atomic condensates lose meta-stability. The maximum and accompanied insta- bility are illustrated as a precursor of the sign change of g_2, the renormalized two-body interaction between condensed atoms from effectively repulsive to effectively attractive when approaching res- onance even though the scattering length is still positive. This occurs when dimers, under the influence of condensates, emerge at zero energy in the atomic gases at a finite positive scattering length.

Self-consistent density functional calculations of the crystal field levels in lanthanide and actinide dioxides

Using a recently developed method combining a nonspherical self-interaction corrected LDA+$U$ scheme and an on-site multi-body Hamiltonian [Phys.\ Rev.\ B 83, 085106 (2011)], we calculate the crystal field parameters and crystal field (CF) excitation levels of $f$-element dioxides in the fluorite structure with $f^{n}$ electronic configurations, including $n=1$ (PaO$_{2}$, PrO$_{2}$), $n=2$ (UO$_{2}$), $n=3$ (NpO$_{2}$), and $n=4$ (PuO$_{2}$). It is shown that good agreement with experimental data (within approximately 10 to 20 meV) can be obtained in all cases. The properties of the multi-electron CF ground states are analyzed.

Nature of 3D Bose Gases near Resonance

In this paper, we explore the nature of three-dimensional Bose gases at large positive scattering lengths via resummation of dominating processes involving a minimum number of virtual atoms. We focus on the energetics of the nearly fermionized Bose gases beyond the usual dilute limit. We also find that an onset instability sets in at a critical scattering length, beyond which the near-resonance Bose gases become strongly coupled to molecules and lose the metastability. Near the point of instability, the chemical potential reaches a maximum, and the effect of the three-body forces can be estimated to be around a few percent.

Anomalous Dimers in Quantum Mixtures near Broad Resonances: Pauli Blocking, Fermi Surface Dynamics and Implications

We study the energetics and dispersion of anomalous dimers that are induced by the Pauli blocking effect in a quantum Fermi gas of majority atoms near interspecies resonances. Unlike in vacuum, we find that both the sign and magnitude of the dimer masses are tunable via Feshbach resonances. We also investigate the effects of particle-hole fluctuations on the dispersion of dimers and demonstrate that the particle-hole fluctuations near a Fermi surface (with Fermi momentum $\hbar k_F$) generally reduce the effective two-body interactions and the binding energy of dimers. Furthermore, in the limit of light minority atoms the particle-hole fluctuations disfavor the formation of dimers with a total momentum $\hbar k_F$, because near $\hbar k_F$ the modes where the dominating particle-hole fluctuations appear are the softest. Our calculation suggests that near broad interspecies resonances when the minority-majority mass ratio $m_B/m_F$ is smaller than a critical value (estimated to be 0.136), dimers in a finite-momentum channel are energetically favored over dimers in the zero-momentum channel. We apply our theory to quantum gases of $^{6}$Li$^{40}$K, $^{6}$Li$^{87}$Rb, $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb and $^{6}$Li$^{23}$Na near broad interspecies resonances, and discuss the limitations of our calculations and implications.

Magnetic Catalysis and Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism in Weakly Coupled Graphene

We study the realization in a model of graphene of the phenomenon whereby the tendency of gauge-field mediated interactions to break chiral symmetry spontaneously is greatly enhanced in an external magnetic field. We prove that, in the weak coupling limit, and where the electron-electron interaction satisfies certain mild conditions, the ground state of charge neutral graphene in an external magnetic field is a quantum Hall ferromagnet which spontaneously breaks the emergent U(4) symmetry to U(2)XU(2). We argue that, due to a residual CP symmetry, the quantum Hall ferromagnet order parameter is given exactly by the leading order in perturbation theory. On the other hand, the chiral condensate which is the order parameter for chiral symmetry breaking generically obtains contributions at all orders. We compute the leading correction to the chiral condensate. We argue that the ensuing fermion spectrum resembles that of massive fermions with a vanishing U(4)-valued chemical potential. We discuss the realization of parity and charge conjugation symmetries and argue that, in the context of our model, the charge neutral quantum Hall state in graphene is a bulk insulator, with vanishing longitudinal conductivity due to a charge gap and Hall conductivity vanishing due to a residual discrete particle-hole symmetry.

Pauli Blocking Effect on Efimov States Near Feshbach Resonance

In this Letter we study the effect of Pauli blocking on the Efimov states in a quantum Fermi gas and illustrate that the universal Efimov potential is altered at large distances. We obtain the universal spectrum flow of Efimov trimers when the Fermi density is varied and further consider the effect of scattering of trimers by the Fermi sea. We argue that the universal flow is robust against fluctuating particle-hole pairs that result in an infrared catastrophe in impurity problems.

Crystal field and magnetic structure of UO$_{2}$

The properties of UO$_{2}$ result from rich $f$-electron physics, including electronic Coulomb interactions, spin-orbit and crystal field effects, as well as inter-ionic multipolar coupling. We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the electronic structure of UO$_{2}$ using a combined application of self-consistent DFT+$U$ calculations and a model Hamiltonian. The $Γ_{5}$ ground state of U$^{4+}$ and the energies of crystal field excitations $Γ_{5} \rightarrow Γ_{3,4,1}$ are reproduced in very good agreement with experiment. We also investigate competing non-collinear magnetic structures and confirm 3-k as the T=0 K ground state magnetic structure of UO$_2$.

Fermi-Bose Mixtures Near Broad Interspecies Feshbach Resonances

In this Letter we have studied dressed bound states in Fermi-Bose mixtures near broad interspecies resonance, and implications on many-body correlations. We present the evidence for a first order phase transition between a mixture of Fermi gas and condensate, and a fully paired mixture where extended fermionic molecules occupy a single pairing channel instead of forming a molecular Fermi surface. We have further investigated the effect of Fermi surface dynamics, pair fluctuations and discussed the validity of our results.

First-principles determined charge and orbital interactions in Fe$_3$O$_4$

The interactions between charge and orbitally ordered $d$-electrons are important in many transition metal oxides. We propose an effective energy model for such interactions, parameterized with DFT+U calculations, so that energy contributions of both electronic and lattice origin can be simultaneously accounted for. The model is applied to the low-temperature phase of magnetite, for which we propose a new ground state structure. The effective interactions on the B-lattice of Fe$_3$O$_4$ can be interpreted in terms of electrostatics and short-range Kugel-Khomskii exchange coupling. The frustration between optimal charge and orbital orderings leads to a complex energy landscape whereby the supercell for the charge ordering, orbital ordering and ionic displacements can all be different.

Experimental Quantum Error-Free Transmission

Error-free transmission (EFT) of quantum information is a crucial ingredient in quantum communication network. To overcome the unavoidable decoherence in noisy channel, to date, many efforts have focused on faithfully transmitting one state by consuming large numbers of synchronized ancillary states. However, huge demands of quantum resources are hard to meet with current technology, thus restrict practical applications. Here we propose and demonstrate an economical method of reliably transmitting quantum information. An arbitrary unknown quantum state is converted into time bins deterministically in terms of its own polarization using a modified Franson interferometer. Any arisen noise in channel will induce an associated error to the reference frame of the time bins, which can be utilized to reject errors and recover the initial state. By virtue of state-independent feature, our method can be applied to entanglement distribution. After passing through 0.8 km randomly twisted optical fiber, the entanglement still survives and is verified. Our approach significantly simplifies the implementation of quantum EFT and enables a general quantum state even entanglement to be protected by feedback, thus can be used as a basic building block in practical long-distance quantum communication network.

Resonance Scattering in Optical Lattices and Molecules: Interband versus Intraband Effects

We study the low-energy two-body scattering in optical lattices with all higher-band effects included in an effective potential, using a renormalization group approach. As the potential depth reaches a certain value, a resonance of low energy scattering occurs even when the negative s-wave scattering length $(a_s)$ is much shorter than the lattice constant. These resonances can be mainly driven either by interband or intraband effects or by both, depending on the magnitude of $a_s$. Furthermore the low-energy scattering matrix in optical lattices has a much stronger energy-dependence than that in free space. We also investigate the momentum distribution for molecules when released from optical lattices.

Hyperfine Spin-Two (F=2) Atoms in Three-Dimensional Optical Lattices: Phase Diagrams and Phase Transitions

We consider ultracold matter of spin-2 atoms in optical lattices. We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the studies of spin ordering in Mott states and investigate hyperfine spin correlations. Particularly, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian in an on-site Hilbert space taking into account spin-dependent interactions and exchange between different sites. We obtain phase diagrams and quantum phase transitions between various magnetic phases.

Obtaining correct orbital ground states in $f$ electron systems using a nonspherical self-interaction corrected LDA+$U$ method

The electronic structure of lanthanide and actinide compounds is often characterized by orbital ordering of localized $f$-electrons. Density-functional theory (DFT) studies of such systems using the currently available LDA+$U$ method are plagued by significant orbital-dependent self-interaction, leading to erroneous orbital ground states. An alternative scheme that modifies the exchange, not Hartree, energy is proposed as a remedy. We show that our LDA+$U$ approach reproduces the expected degeneracy of $f^1$ and $f^2$ states in free ions and the correct ground states in solid PrO$_2$. We expect our method to be useful in studying compounds of $f$- and heavy-$d$ elements.

Ground State Properties of Cold Bosonic Atoms At Large Scattering Lengths

In this letter, we study bosonic atoms at large scattering lengths using a variational method where the condensation amplitude is a variational parameter. We further examine momentum distribution functions, chemical potentials and speed of sound, and spatial density profiles of cold bosonic atoms in a trap in this limit. The later two properties turn out to bear similarities of those of Fermi gases. Estimates obtained here are applicable near Feshbach resonances, particularly when the fraction of atoms forming three-body structures is small and can be tested in future cold atom experiments.

Fluctuation-Driven Vortex Fractionalization in Topologically Ordered Superfluids of Cold Atoms

We have studied spin structures of fluctuation-driven fractionalized vortices and topological spin order in 2D nematic superfluids of cold sodium atoms. Our Monte Carlo simulations suggest a softened pi-spin disclination structure in a half-quantum vortex when spin correlations are short ranged; in addition, calculations indicate that a unique non-local topological spin order emerges simultaneously as cold atoms become a superfluid below a critical temperature. We have also estimated fluctuation-dependent critical frequencies for half-quantum vortex nucleation in rotating optical traps and discussed probing these excitations in experiments.

Dynamical Creation of Fractionalized Vortices and Vortex Lattices

We investigate dynamic creation of fractionalized half-quantum vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms. Our simulations show that both individual half-quantum vortices and vortex lattices can be created in rotating optical traps when additional pulsed magnetic trapping potentials are applied. We also find that a distinct periodically modulated spin-density-wave spatial structure is always embedded in square half-quantum vortex lattices; this structure can be conveniently probed by taking absorption images of ballistically expanding cold atoms in a Stern-Gerlach field.

Quantum-Fluctuation-Driven Coherent Spin Dynamics in Small Condensates

We have studied quantum spin dynamics of small condensates of cold sodium atoms. For a condensate initially prepared in a mean field ground state, we show that coherent spin dynamics are {\em purely} driven by quantum fluctuations of collective spin coordinates and can be tuned by quadratic Zeeman coupling and magnetization. These dynamics in small condensates can be probed in a high-finesse optical cavity where temporal behaviors of excitation spectra of a coupled condensate-photon system reveal the time evolution of populations of atoms at different hyperfine spin states.

Domain walls in gapped graphene

The electronic properties of a particular class of domain walls in gapped graphene are investigated. We show that they can support mid-gap states which are localized in the vicinity of the domain wall and propagate along its length. With a finite density of domain walls, these states can alter the electronic properties of gapped graphene significantly. If the mid-gap band is partially filled, the domain wall can behave like a one-dimensional metal embedded in a semi-conductor, and could potentially be used as a single-channel quantum wire.
