A Hamiltonian Formulation of Causal Variational Principles

Causal variational principles, which are the analytic core of the physical theory of causal fermion systems, are found to have an underlying Hamiltonian structure, giving a formulation of the dynamics in terms of physical fields in space-time. After generalizing causal variational principles to a class of lower semi-continuous Lagrangians on a smooth, possibly non-compact manifold, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. In the first part, it is shown under additional smoothness assumptions that the space of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations has the structure of a symplectic Fréchet manifold. The symplectic form is constructed as a surface layer integral which is shown to be invariant under the time evolution. In the second part, the results and methods are extended to the non-smooth setting. The physical fields correspond to variations of the universal measure described infinitesimally by one-jets. Evaluating the Euler-Lagrange equations weakly, we derive linearized field equations for these jets. In the final part, our constructions and results are illustrated in a detailed example on $\mathbb{R}^{1,1} \times S^1$ where a local minimizer is given by a measure supported on a two-dimensional lattice.

The Fermionic Signature Operator and Quantum States in Rindler Space-Time

The fermionic signature operator is constructed in Rindler space-time. It is shown to be an unbounded self-adjoint operator on the Hilbert space of solutions of the massive Dirac equation. In two-dimensional Rindler space-time, we prove that the resulting fermionic projector state coincides with the Fulling-Rindler vacuum. Moreover, the fermionic signature operator gives a covariant construction of general thermal states, in particular of the Unruh state. The fermionic signature operator is shown to be well-defined in asymptotically Rindler space-times. In four-dimensional Rindler space-time, our construction gives rise to new quantum states.

The Fermionic Signature Operator and Hadamard States in the Presence of a Plane Electromagnetic Wave

We give a non-perturbative construction of a distinguished state for the quantized Dirac field in Minkowski space in the presence of a time-dependent external field of the form of a plane electromagnetic wave. By explicit computation of the fermionic signature operator, it is shown that the Dirac operator has the strong mass oscillation property. We prove that the resulting fermionic projector state is a Hadamard state.

Lorentzian Spectral Geometry for Globally Hyperbolic Surfaces

The fermionic signature operator is analyzed on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian surfaces. The connection between the spectrum of the fermionic signature operator and geometric properties of the surface is studied. The findings are illustrated by simple examples and counterexamples.

The Principle of the Fermionic Projector, Chapters 0-4

The "principle of the fermionic projector" provides a new mathematical framework for the formulation of physical theories and is a promising approach for physics beyond the standard model. The book begins with a brief review of relativity, relativistic quantum mechanics and classical gauge theories, with the emphasis on the basic physical concepts and the mathematical foundations. The external field problem and Klein's paradox are discussed and then resolved by introducing the so-called fermionic projector, a global object in space-time which generalizes the notion of the Dirac sea. The mathematical core of the book is to give a precise definition of the fermionic projector and to employ methods of hyperbolic differential equations for its detailed analysis. The fermionic projector makes it possible to formulate a new type of variational principles in space-time. The mathematical tools for the analysis of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are developed. A particular variational principle is proposed which gives rise to an effective interaction showing many similarities to the interactions of the standard model. The main chapters of the book are easily accessible for beginning graduate students in mathematics or physics. Several appendices provide supplementary material which will be useful to the experienced researcher.

Self-Adjointness of the Dirac Hamiltonian for a Class of Non-Uniformly Elliptic Boundary Value Problems

We consider a boundary value problem for the Dirac equation in a smooth, asymptotically flat Lorentzian manifold admitting a Killing field which is timelike near and tangential to the boundary. A self-adjoint extension of the Dirac Hamiltonian is constructed. Our results also apply to the situation that the space-time includes horizons, where the Hamiltonian fails to be elliptic.

The Fermionic Projector in a Time-Dependent External Potential: Mass Oscillation Property and Hadamard States

We give a non-perturbative construction of the fermionic projector in Minkowski space coupled to a time-dependent external potential which is smooth and decays faster than quadratically for large times. The weak and strong mass oscillation properties are proven. We show that the integral kernel of the fermionic projector is of Hadamard form, provided that the time integral of the spatial sup-norm of the potential satisfies a suitable bound. This gives rise to an algebraic quantum field theory of Dirac fields in an external potential with a distinguished pure quasi-free Hadamard state.

An Action Principle for an Interacting Fermion System and its Analysis in the Continuum Limit

We introduce and analyze a system of relativistic fermions in a space-time continuum, which interact via an action principle as previously considered in a discrete space-time. The model is defined by specifying the vacuum as a sum of Dirac seas corresponding to several generations of elementary particles. The only free parameters entering the model are the fermion masses. We find dynamical field equations if and only if the number of generations equals three. In this case, the dynamics is described by a massive axial potential coupled to the Dirac spinors. The coupling constant and the rest mass of the axial field depend on the regularization; for a given regularization method they can be computed as functions of the fermion masses. The bosonic mass term arises as a consequence of a symmetry breaking effect, giving an alternative to the Higgs mechanism. In addition to the standard loop corrections of quantum field theory, we find new types of correction terms to the field equations which violate causality. These non-causal corrections are too small for giving obvious contradictions to physical observations, but they might open the possibility to test the approach in future experiments.

The Continuum Limit of a Fermion System Involving Neutrinos: Weak and Gravitational Interactions

We analyze the causal action principle for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by a left-handed, massive SU(2) gauge field and a gravitational field. The off-diagonal gauge potentials involve a unitary mixing matrix, which is similar to the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix in the standard model.

Dynamical Gravitational Coupling as a Modified Theory of General Relativity

A modified theory of general relativity is proposed, where the gravitational constant is replaced by a dynamical variable in space-time. The dynamics of the gravitational coupling is described by a family of parametrized null geodesics, implying that the gravitational coupling at a space-time point is determined by solving transport equations along all null geodesics through this point. General relativity with dynamical gravitational coupling (DGC) is introduced. We motivate DGC from general considerations and explain how it arises in the context of causal fermion systems. The underlying physical idea is that the gravitational coupling is determined by microscopic structures on the Planck scale which propagate with the speed of light. In order to clarify the mathematical structure, we analyze the conformal behavior and prove local existence and uniqueness of the time evolution. The differences to Einstein's theory are worked out in the examples of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model and the spherically symmetric collapse of a shell of matter. Potential implications for the problem of dark matter and for inflation are discussed. It is shown that the effects in the solar system are too small for being observable in present-day experiments.

A Spectral Representation for Spin-Weighted Spheroidal Wave Operators with Complex Aspherical Parameter

A family of spectral decompositions of the spin-weighted spheroidal wave operator is constructed for complex aspherical parameters with bounded imaginary part. As the operator is not symmetric, its spectrum is complex and Jordan chains may appear. We prove uniform upper bounds for the length of the Jordan chains and the norms of the idempotent operators mapping onto the invariant subspaces. The completeness of the spectral decomposition is proven.
