Noether-Like Theorems for Causal Variational Principles

The connection between symmetries and conservation laws as made by Noether's theorem is extended to the context of causal variational principles and causal fermion systems. Different notions of continuous symmetries are introduced. It is proven that these symmetries give rise to corresponding conserved quantities, expressed in terms of so-called surface layer integrals. In a suitable limiting case, the Noether-like theorems for causal fermion systems reproduce charge conservation and the conservation of energy and momentum in Minkowski space. Thus the conservation of charge and energy-momentum are found to be special cases of general conservation laws which are intrinsic to causal fermion systems.

A Non-Perturbative Construction of the Fermionic Projector on Globally Hyperbolic Manifolds I - Space-Times of Finite Lifetime

We give a functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold of finite lifetime. The integral kernel of the fermionic projector is represented by a two-point distribution on the manifold. By introducing an ultraviolet regularization, we get to the framework of causal fermion systems. The connection to the "negative-energy solutions" of the Dirac equation and to the WKB approximation is explained and quantified by a detailed analysis of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes.

The Chiral Index of the Fermionic Signature Operator

We define an index of the fermionic signature operator on even-dimensional globally hyperbolic spin manifolds of finite lifetime. The invariance of the index under homotopies is studied. The definition is generalized to causal fermion systems with a chiral grading. We give examples of space-times and Dirac operators thereon for which our index is non-trivial.

Causal Fermion Systems as a Candidate for a Unified Physical Theory

The theory of causal fermion systems is an approach to describe fundamental physics. Giving quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases, it is a candidate for a unified physical theory. We here give a non-technical introduction.

Refined Error Estimates for the Riccati Equation with Applications to the Angular Teukolsky Equation

We derive refined rigorous error estimates for approximate solutions of Sturm-Liouville and Riccati equations with real or complex potentials. The approximate solutions include WKB approximations, Airy and parabolic cylinder functions, and certain Bessel functions. Our estimates are applied to solutions of the angular Teukolsky equation with a complex aspherical parameter in a rotating black hole Kerr geometry.

Causal Fermion Systems: A Quantum Space-Time Emerging from an Action Principle

Causal fermion systems are introduced as a general mathematical framework for formulating relativistic quantum theory. By specializing, we recover earlier notions like fermion systems in discrete space-time, the fermionic projector and causal variational principles. We review how an effect of spontaneous structure formation gives rise to a topology and a causal structure in space-time. Moreover, we outline how to construct a spin connection and curvature, leading to a proposal for a "quantum geometry" in the Lorentzian setting. We review recent numerical and analytical results on the support of minimizers of causal variational principles which reveal a "quantization effect" resulting in a discreteness of space-time. A brief survey is given on the correspondence to quantum field theory and gauge theories.

A Spatially Homogeneous and Isotropic Einstein-Dirac Cosmology

We consider a spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model where Dirac spinors are coupled to classical gravity. For the Dirac spinors we choose a Hartree-Fock ansatz where all one-particle wave functions are coherent and have the same momentum. If the scale function is large, the universe behaves like the classical Friedmann dust solution. If however the scale function is small, quantum effects lead to oscillations of the energy-momentum tensor. It is shown numerically and proven analytically that these quantum oscillations can prevent the formation of a big bang or big crunch singularity. The energy conditions are analyzed. We prove the existence of time-periodic solutions which go through an infinite number of expansion and contraction cycles.

Causal Variational Principles on Measure Spaces

We introduce a class of variational principles on measure spaces which are causal in the sense that they generate a relation on pairs of points, giving rise to a distinction between spacelike and timelike separation. General existence results are proved. It is shown in examples that minimizers need not be unique. Counter examples to compactness are discussed. The existence results are applied to variational principles formulated in indefinite inner product spaces.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory in the Framework of the Fermionic Projector

We give a microscopic derivation of perturbative quantum field theory, taking causal fermion systems and the framework of the fermionic projector as the starting point. The resulting quantum field theory agrees with standard quantum field theory on the tree level and reproduces all bosonic loop diagrams. The fermion loops are described in a different formalism in which no ultraviolet divergences occur.

On the Support of Minimizers of Causal Variational Principles

A class of causal variational principles on a compact manifold is introduced and analyzed both numerically and analytically. It is proved under general assumptions that the support of a minimizing measure is either completely timelike, or it is singular in the sense that its interior is empty. In the examples of the circle, the sphere and certain flag manifolds, the general results are supplemented by a more detailed and explicit analysis of the minimizers. On the sphere, we get a connection to packing problems and the Tammes distribution. Moreover, the minimal action is estimated from above and below.

On the Structure of Minimizers of Causal Variational Principles in the Non-Compact and Equivariant Settings

We derive the Euler-Lagrange equations for minimizers of causal variational principles in the non-compact setting with constraints, possibly prescribing symmetries. Considering first variations, we show that the minimizing measure is supported on the intersection of a hyperplane with a level set of a function which is homogeneous of degree two. Moreover, we perform second variations to obtain that the compact operator representing the quadratic part of the action is positive semi-definite. The key ingredient for the proof is a subtle adaptation of the Lagrange multiplier method to variational principles on convex sets.

Absence of Zeros and Asymptotic Error Estimates for Airy and Parabolic Cylinder Functions

We derive WKB approximations for a class of Airy and parabolic cylinder functions in the complex plane, including quantitative error bounds. We prove that all zeros of the Airy function lie on a ray in the complex plane, and that the parabolic cylinder functions have no zeros. We also analyze the Airy and Airy-WKB limit of the parabolic cylinder functions.

A Lorentzian Quantum Geometry

We propose a formulation of a Lorentzian quantum geometry based on the framework of causal fermion systems. After giving the general definition of causal fermion systems, we deduce space-time as a topological space with an underlying causal structure. Restricting attention to systems of spin dimension two, we derive the objects of our quantum geometry: the spin space, the tangent space endowed with a Lorentzian metric, connection and curvature. In order to get the correspondence to differential geometry, we construct examples of causal fermion systems by regularizing Dirac sea configurations in Minkowski space and on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold. When removing the regularization, the objects of our quantum geometry reduce precisely to the common objects of Lorentzian spin geometry, up to higher order curvature corrections.

The Dirac Equation and the Normalization of its Solutions in a Closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe

We set up the Dirac equation in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry and separate the spatial and time variables. In the case of a closed universe, the spatial dependence is solved explicitly, giving rise to a discrete set of solutions. We compute the probability integral and analyze a space-time normalization integral. This analysis allows us to introduce the fermionic projector in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry and to specify its global normalization as well as its local form.
