Bosonic Loop Diagrams as Perturbative Solutions of the Classical Field Equations in $ϕ^4$-Theory

Solutions of the classical $ϕ^4$-theory in Minkowski space-time are analyzed in a perturbation expansion in the nonlinearity. Using the language of Feynman diagrams, the solution of the Cauchy problem is expressed in terms of tree diagrams which involve the retarded Green's function and have one outgoing leg. In order to obtain general tree diagrams, we set up a "classical measurement process" in which a virtual observer of a scattering experiment modifies the field and detects suitable energy differences. By adding a classical stochastic background field, we even obtain all loop diagrams. The expansions are compared with the standard Feynman diagrams of the corresponding quantum field theory.

The Fermionic Projector, Entanglement, and the Collapse of the Wave Function

After a brief introduction to the fermionic projector approach, we review how entanglement and second quantized bosonic and fermionic fields can be described in this framework. The constructions are discussed with regard to decoherence phenomena and the measurement problem. We propose a mechanism leading to the collapse of the wave function in the quantum mechanical measurement process.

A Formulation of Quantum Field Theory Realizing a Sea of Interacting Dirac Particles

In this survey article, we explain a few ideas behind the fermionic projector approach and summarize recent results which clarify the connection to quantum field theory. The fermionic projector is introduced, which describes the physical system by a collection of Dirac states, including the states of the Dirac sea. Formulating the interaction by an action principle for the fermionic projector, we obtain a consistent description of interacting quantum fields which reproduces the results of perturbative quantum field theory. We find a new mechanism for the generation of boson masses and obtain small corrections to the field equations which violate causality.

Quantum Oscillations Can Prevent the Big Bang Singularity in an Einstein-Dirac Cosmology

We consider a spatially homogeneous and isotropic system of Dirac particles coupled to classical gravity. The dust and radiation dominated closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times are recovered as limiting cases. We find a mechanism where quantum oscillations of the Dirac wave functions can prevent the formation of the big bang or big crunch singularity. Thus before the big crunch, the collapse of the universe is stopped by quantum effects and reversed to an expansion, so that the universe opens up entering a new era of classical behavior. Numerical examples of such space-times are given, and the dependence on various parameters is discussed. Generically, one has a collapse after a finite number of cycles. By fine-tuning the parameters we construct an example of a space-time which is time-periodic, thus running through an infinite number of contraction and expansion cycles.

Some Curvature Problems in Semi-Riemannian Geometry

In this survey article we review several results on the curvature of semi-Riemannian metrics which are motivated by the positive mass theorem. The main themes are estimates of the Riemann tensor of an asymptotically flat manifold and the construction of Lorentzian metrics which satisfy the dominant energy condition.

Error Estimates for Approximate Solutions of the Riccati Equation with Real or Complex Potentials

A method is presented for obtaining rigorous error estimates for approximate solutions of the Riccati equation, with real or complex potentials. Our main tool is to derive invariant region estimates for complex solutions of the Riccati equation. We explain the general strategy for applying these estimates and illustrate the method in typical examples, where the approximate solutions are obtained by glueing together WKB and Airy solutions of corresponding one-dimensional Schrodinger equations. Our method is motivated by and has applications to the analysis of linear wave equations in the geometry of a rotating black hole.

The Causal Perturbation Expansion Revisited: Rescaling the Interacting Dirac Sea

The causal perturbation expansion defines the Dirac sea in the presence of a time-dependent external field. It yields an operator whose image generalizes the vacuum solutions of negative energy and thus gives a canonical splitting of the solution space into two subspaces. After giving a self-contained introduction to the ideas and techniques, we show that this operator is in general not idempotent. We modify the standard construction by a rescaling procedure giving a projector on the generalized negative-energy subspace. The resulting rescaled causal perturbation expansion uniquely defines the fermionic projector in terms of a series of distributional solutions of the Dirac equation. The technical core of the paper is to work out the combinatorics of the expansion in detail. It is also shown that the fermionic projector with interaction can be obtained from the free projector by a unitary transformation. We finally analyze the consequences of the rescaling procedure on the light-cone expansion.

An Action Principle for the Masses of Dirac Particles

A variational principle is introduced which minimizes an action formulated for configurations of vacuum Dirac seas. The action is analyzed in position and momentum space. We relate the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations to the notion of state stability. Examples of numerical minimizers are constructed and discussed.

Linear Waves in the Kerr Geometry: A Mathematical Voyage to Black Hole Physics

This paper gives a survey of wave dynamics in the Kerr space-time geometry, the mathematical model of a rotating black hole in equilibrium. After a brief introduction to the Kerr metric, we review the separability properties of linear wave equations for fields of general spin $s=0, 1/2, 1, 2$, corresponding to scalar, Dirac, electromagnetic fields and linearized gravitational waves. We give results on the long-time dynamics of Dirac and scalar waves, including decay rates for massive Dirac fields. For scalar waves, we give a rigorous treatment of superradiance and describe rigorously a mechanism of energy extraction from a rotating black hole. Finally, we discuss the open problem of linear stability of the Kerr metric and present partial results.

Definition of the Dirac Sea in the Presence of External Fields

It is shown that the Dirac sea can be uniquely defined for the Dirac equation with general interaction, if we impose a causality condition on the Dirac sea. We derive an explicit formula for the Dirac sea in terms of a power series in the bosonic potentials. The construction is extended to systems of Dirac seas. If the system contains chiral fermions, the causality condition yields a restriction for the bosonic potentials.

A Level Set Analysis of the Witten Spinor with Applications to Curvature Estimates

We analyze the level sets of the norm of the Witten spinor in an asymptotically flat Riemannian spin manifold of positive scalar curvature. Level sets of small area are constructed. We prove curvature estimates which quantify that, if the total mass becomes small, the manifold becomes flat with the exception of a set of small surface area. These estimates involve either a volume bound or a spectral bound for the Dirac operator on a conformal compactification, but they are independent of the isoperimetric constant.

Fermion Systems in Discrete Space-Time Exemplifying the Spontaneous Generation of a Causal Structure

As toy models for space-time on the Planck scale, we consider examples of fermion systems in discrete space-time which are composed of one or two particles defined on two up to nine space-time points. We study the self-organization of the particles as described by a variational principle both analytically and numerically. We find an effect of spontaneous symmetry breaking which leads to the emergence of a discrete causal structure.

A Rigorous Treatment of Energy Extraction from a Rotating Black Hole

The Cauchy problem is considered for the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry. We prove that by choosing a suitable wave packet as initial data, one can extract energy from the black hole, thereby putting supperradiance, the wave analogue of the Penrose process, into a rigorous mathematical framework. We quantify the maximal energy gain. We also compute the infinitesimal change of mass and angular momentum of the black hole, in agreement with Christodoulou's result for the Penrose process. The main mathematical tool is our previously derived integral representation of the wave propagator.

A Lattice Model for the Fermionic Projector in a Static and Isotropic Space-Time

We introduce a lattice model for a static and isotropic system of relativistic fermions. An action principle is formulated, which describes a particle-particle interaction of all fermions. The model is designed specifically for a numerical analysis of the nonlinear interaction, which is expected to lead to the formation of a Dirac sea structure. We discuss basic properties of the system. It is proved that the minimum of the variational principle is attained. First numerical results reveal an effect of spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Decay of Solutions of the Wave Equation in the Kerr Geometry

We consider the Cauchy problem for the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry for smooth initial data supported outside the event horizon. We prove that the solutions decay in time in L^\infty_loc. The proof is based on a representation of the solution as an infinite sum over the angular momentum modes, each of which is an integral of the energy variable on the real line. This integral representation involves solutions of the radial and angular ODEs which arise in the separation of variables.

An Integral Spectral Representation of the Propagator for the Wave Equation in the Kerr Geometry

We consider the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry for Cauchy data which is smooth and compactly supported outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation which expresses the solution as a superposition of solutions of the radial and angular ODEs which arise in the separation of variables. In particular, we prove completeness of the solutions of the separated ODEs. This integral representation is a suitable starting point for a detailed analysis of the long-time dynamics of scalar waves in the Kerr geometry.

On the Regularized Fermionic Projector of the Vacuum

We construct families of fermionic projectors with spherically symmetric regularization, which satisfy the condition of a distributional ${\mathcal{M}} P$-product. The method is to analyze regularization tails with a power-law or logarithmic scaling in composite expressions in the fermionic projector. The resulting regularizations break the Lorentz symmetry and give rise to a multi-layer structure of the fermionic projector near the light cone. The remaining freedom for the regularization parameters and the consequences for the normalization of the fermionic states are discussed.
