Initialization for Network Embedding: A Graph Partition Approach

Network embedding has been intensively studied in the literature and widely used in various applications, such as link prediction and node classification. While previous work focus on the design of new algorithms or are tailored for various problem settings, the discussion of initialization strategies in the learning process is often missed. In this work, we address this important issue of initialization for network embedding that could dramatically improve the performance of the algorithms on both effectiveness and efficiency. Specifically, we first exploit the graph partition technique that divides the graph into several disjoint subsets, and then construct an abstract graph based on the partitions. We obtain the initialization of the embedding for each node in the graph by computing the network embedding on the abstract graph, which is much smaller than the input graph, and then propagating the embedding among the nodes in the input graph. With extensive experiments on various datasets, we demonstrate that our initialization technique significantly improves the performance of the state-of-the-art algorithms on the evaluations of link prediction and node classification by up to 7.76% and 8.74% respectively. Besides, we show that the technique of initialization reduces the running time of the state-of-the-arts by at least 20%.

Two-Stream CNN with Loose Pair Training for Multi-modal AMD Categorization

This paper studies automated categorization of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) given a multi-modal input, which consists of a color fundus image and an optical coherence tomography (OCT) image from a specific eye. Previous work uses a traditional method, comprised of feature extraction and classifier training that cannot be optimized jointly. By contrast, we propose a two-stream convolutional neural network (CNN) that is end-to-end. The CNN's fusion layer is tailored to the need of fusing information from the fundus and OCT streams. For generating more multi-modal training instances, we introduce Loose Pair training, where a fundus image and an OCT image are paired based on class labels rather than eyes. Moreover, for a visual interpretation of how the individual modalities make contributions, we extend the class activation mapping technique to the multi-modal scenario. Experiments on a real-world dataset collected from an outpatient clinic justify the viability of our proposal for multi-modal AMD categorization.

Phonon-Phonon Quantum Coherent Coupling in GaAs/AlAs Superlattice

Quantum coherent coupling between a zone-center phonon and two acoustic phonons was observed in two GaAs/AlAs superlattices (8 nm/8 nm and 5.4 nm/5.4 nm) at ambient temperature. Using degenerate coherent phonon spectroscopy, a multi-cycle oscillation feature appears in the time-resolved phonon amplitudes of both samples, as a result of the coherent energy exchange between a driving phonon mode near first Brillouin zone center and two target acoustic phonon modes. This feature resembles the photon resonant parametric down/up-conversion processes, as well as the reversible coherent energy exchange between the optical field and a mechanical oscillator, suggesting quantum coherent coupling between the driving and target phonon modes. In the 8 nm/8 nm superlattice, the coupling strength increases nonlinearly at high pump fluences, which may eventually reach an extreme state where all three phonon modes share the same coherent state, as predicted by Orbach in the 1960s.

Robust Strategies for Affirming Kramers-Henneberger Atoms

Atoms exposed to high-frequency strong laser fields experience the ionization suppression due to the deformation of Kramers-Henneberger (KH) wave functions, which has not been confirmed yet in experiment. We propose a bichromatic pump-probe strategy to affirm the existence of KH states, which is formed by the pump pulse and ionized by the probe pulse. In the case of the single-photon ionization triggered by a vacuum ultra-violet probe pulse, the double-slit structure of KH atom is mapped to the photoelectron momentum distribution. In the case of the tunneling ionization induced by an infrared probe pulse, streaking in anisotropic Coulomb potential produces a characteristic momentum drift. Apart from bichromatic schemes, the non-Abelian geometric phase provides an alternative route to affirm the existence of KH states. Following specific loops in laser parameter space, a complete spin flipping transition could be achieved. Our proposal has advantages of being robust against focal-intensity average as well as ionization depletion, and is accessible with current laser facilities.

mu-Forcing: Training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders for Text Generation

It has been previously observed that training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders (VRAE) for text generation suffers from serious uninformative latent variables problem. The model would collapse into a plain language model that totally ignore the latent variables and can only generate repeating and dull samples. In this paper, we explore the reason behind this issue and propose an effective regularizer based approach to address it. The proposed method directly injects extra constraints on the posteriors of latent variables into the learning process of VRAE, which can flexibly and stably control the trade-off between the KL term and the reconstruction term, making the model learn dense and meaningful latent representations. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several strong baselines and can make the model learn interpretable latent variables and generate diverse meaningful sentences. Furthermore, the proposed method can perform well without using other strategies, such as KL annealing.

Professor Chen Ping Yang's early significant contributions to mathematical physics

In the 60's Professor Chen Ping Yang with Professor Chen Ning Yang published several seminal papers on the study of Bethe's hypothesis for various problems of physics. The works on the lattice gas model, critical behaviour in liquid-gas transition, the one-dimensional (1D) Heisenberg spin chain, and the thermodynamics of 1D delta-function interacting bosons are significantly important and influential in the fields of mathematical physics and statistical mechanics. In particular, the work on the 1D Heisenberg spin chain led to subsequent developments in many problems using Bethe's hypothesis. The method which Yang and Yang proposed to treat the thermodynamics of the 1D system of bosons with a delta-function interaction leads to significant applications in a wide range of problems in quantum statistical mechanics. The Yang and Yang thermodynamics has found beautiful experimental verifications in recent years.

Zero-energy proton dissociation of H$_2^+$ through stimulated Raman scattering

We show that (near-)zero energy proton emission from H$_2^+$ in strong two-color and broadband laser fields is dominated by a stimulated Raman scattering process taking place on the electronic ground state. It is furthermore shown that in the (near-)zero energy region the asymmetry in proton ejection induced by asymmetric laser fields is due to the interplay of several processes, rather than only pathway interferences, with vibrational trapping (or bond-hardening) taking a key role.

Comparison between Grating Imaging and Transient Grating Techniques on Measuring Carrier Diffusion in Semiconductor

Optical grating technique, where optical gratings are generated via light inference, has been widely used to measure charge carrier and phonon transport in semiconductors. In this paper, compared are three types of transient optical grating techniques: transient grating diffraction, transient grating heterodyne, and grating imaging, by utilizing them to measure carrier diffusion coefficient in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice. Theoretical models are constructed for each technique to extract the carrier diffusion coefficient, and the results from all three techniques are consistent. Our main findings are: (1) the transient transmission change obtained from transient grating heterodyne and grating imaging techniques are identical, even these two techniques originate from different detection principles; and (2) By adopting detection of transmission change (heterodyne amplification) instead of pure diffraction, the grating imaging technique (transient grating heterodyne) has overwhelming advantage in signal intensity than the transient grating diffraction, with a signal intensity ratio of 315:1 (157:1).

Accelerated Carrier Recombination by Grain Boundary/Edge Defects in MBE Grown Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Defect-carrier interaction in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) play important roles in carrier relaxation dynamics and carrier transport, which determines the performance of electronic devices. With femtosecond laser time-resolved spectroscopy, we investigated the effect of grain boundary/edge defects on the ultrafast dynamics of photoexcited carrier in MBE grown MoTe2 and MoSe2. We found that, comparing with exfoliated samples, carrier recombination rate in MBE grown samples accelerates by about 50 times. We attribute this striking difference to the existence of abundant grain boundary/edge defects in MBE grown samples, which can serve as effective recombination centers for the photoexcited carriers. We also observed coherent acoustic phonons in both exfoliated and MBE grown MoTe2, indicating strong electron-phonon coupling in this materials. Our measured sound velocity agrees well with previously reported result of theoretical calculation. Our findings provide useful reference for the fundamental parameters: carrier lifetime and sound velocity, reveal the undiscovered carrier recombination effect of grain boundary/edge defects, both of which will facilitate the defect engineering in TMD materials for high speed opto-electronics.

Quantum criticality of spinons

The free fermion nature of interacting spins in one dimensional (1D) spin chains still lacks a rigorous study. In this letter we show that the length-$1$ spin strings significantly dominate critical properties of spinons, magnons and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution we analytically calculate exact scaling functions of thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double peaks in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning out from the critical point, indicating three quantum phases: the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), quantum critical and fully polarized ferromagnetic phases. For the TLL phase, the Wilson ratio $R_W=4K_s$ remains almost temperature-independent, here $K_s$ is the Luttinger parameter. Furthermore, applying our results we precisely determine the quantum scalings and critical exponents of all magnetic properties in the ideal 1D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Cu(C${}_4$H${}_4$N${}_2$)(NO${}_3$)${}_2$ recently studied in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 114}, 037202 (2015)]. We further find that the magnetization peak used in experiments is not a good quantity to map out the finite temperature TLL phase boundary.

Carrier Trapping by Oxygen Impurities in Molybdenum Diselenide

Understanding defect effect on carrier dynamics is essential for both fundamental physics and potential applications of transition metal dichalcogenides. Here, the phenomenon of oxygen impurities trapping photo-excited carriers has been studied with ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Oxygen impurities are intentionally created in exfoliated multilayer MoSe2 with Ar+ plasma irradiation and air exposure. After plasma treatment, the signal of transient absorption first increases and then decreases, which is a signature of defect capturing carriers. With larger density of oxygen defects, the trapping effect becomes more prominent. The trapping defect densities are estimated from the transient absorption signal, and its increasing trend in the longer-irradiated sample agrees with the results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. First principle calculations with density functional theory reveal that oxygen atoms occupying Mo vacancies create mid-gap defect states, which are responsible for the carrier trapping. Our findings shed light on the important role of oxygen defects as carrier trappers in transition metal dichalcogenides, and facilitates defect engineering in relevant material and device applications.

Giant Thermal Conductivity Enhancement in Multilayer MoS2 under Highly Compressive Strain

Multilayer MoS2 possesses highly anisotropic thermal conductivities along in-plane and cross-plane directions that could hamper heat dissipation in electronics. With about 9% cross-plane compressive strain created by hydrostatic pressure in a diamond anvil cell, we observed about 12 times increase in the cross-plane thermal conductivity of multilayer MoS2. Our experimental and theoretical studies reveal that this drastic change arises from the greatly strengthened interlayer interaction and heavily modified phonon dispersions along cross-plane direction, with negligible contribution from electronic thermal conductivity, despite its enhancement of 4 orders of magnitude. The anisotropic thermal conductivity in the multilayer MoS2 at ambient environment becomes almost isotropic under highly compressive strain, effectively transitioning from 2D to 3D heat dissipation. This strain tuning approach also makes possible parallel tuning of structural, thermal and electrical properties, and can be extended to the whole family of 2D Van der Waals solids, down to two layer systems.

Optimizing production scheduling of steel plate hot rolling for economic load dispatch under time-of-use electricity pricing

Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing provides an opportunity for industrial users to cut electricity costs. Although many methods for Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) under TOU pricing in continuous industrial processing have been proposed, there are still difficulties in batch-type processing since power load units are not directly adjustable and nonlinearly depend on production planning and scheduling. In this paper, for hot rolling, a typical batch-type and energy intensive process in steel industry, a production scheduling optimization model for ELD is proposed under TOU pricing, in which the objective is to minimize electricity costs while considering penalties caused by jumps between adjacent slabs. A NSGA-II based multi-objective production scheduling algorithm is developed to obtain Pareto-optimal solutions, and then TOPSIS based multi-criteria decision-making is performed to recommend an optimal solution to facilitate filed operation. Experimental results and analyses show that the proposed method cuts electricity costs in production, especially in case of allowance for penalty score increase in a certain range. Further analyses show that the proposed method has effect on peak load regulation of power grid.

Spatiotemporal steering of photoelectron emission in multiphoton above-threshold ionization

We experimentally demonstrate spatiotemporal steering of photoelectron emission in multiphoton above-threshold single ionization of atoms exposed to a phase-controlled orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser pulse. Spatial and energy resolved photoelectron angular distributions are measured as a function of the laser phase, allowing us to look into the fine structures and emission dynamics. The slow and fast photoelectrons, distinguished by the energy larger or smaller than 2Up with Up being the ponderomotive energy of a free electron in the laser field, have distinct spatiotemporal dependences of the laser waveform. The phase-of-phase of the slow electron oscillates as functions of both the energy and emission direction, however, the fast electron present rather flat phase structure which merely depends on its emission direction. Three-dimensional generalized quantum trajectory Monte Carlo simulations are performed to explore the sub-cycle dynamics of the electron emission in the phase-controlled OTC pulse.

Disentangling the role of laser coupling in directional breaking of molecules

The directional control of molecular dissociation with the laser electric field waveform is a paradigm and was demonstrated for a variety of molecules. In most cases, the directional control occurs via a dissociative ionization pathway. The role of laser-induced coupling of electronic states in the dissociating ion versus selective ionization of oriented neutral molecules, however, could not be distinguished for even small heteronuclear molecules such as CO. Here, we introduce a technique, using elliptically polarized pump and linearly polarized two-color probe pulses that unambiguously distinguishes the roles of laser-induced state coupling and selective ionization. The measured photoelectron momentum distributions governed by the light polarizations allow us to coincidently identify the ionization and dissociation from the pump and probe pulses. Directional dissociation of CO+ as a function of the relative phase of the linearly polarized two-color pulse is observed for both parallel and orthogonally oriented molecules. We find that the laser-induced coupling of various electronic states of CO+ plays an important role for the observed directional bond breaking, which is verified by quantum calculations.

Phase separation of metastable CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy at intermediate temperatures

The CoCrFeNi alloy is widely accepted as an exemplary stable base for high entropy alloys (HEAs). Although various investigations prove it to be stable solid solution, its phase stability is still suspicious. Here, we identified that the CoCrFeNi HEA was thermally metastable at intermediate temperatures, and composition decomposition occurred after annealed at 750oC for 800 hrs. The increased lattice distortion induced by minor addition of Al into the CoCrFeNi base accelerated the composition decomposition and a second fcc phase with a different lattice constant occurred in the long time annealed CoCrFeNiAl0.1 HEA. A Cr-rich σ phase also precipitated from the CoCrFeNiAl0.1 HEA. The Al element can induce the instability of CoCrFeNi HEA. The revealed metastable CoCrFeNi at intermediate temperatures will greatly change the way of HEAs development.

Longitudinal photoelectron momentum shifts induced by absorbing a single XUV photon in diatomic molecules

The photoelectron momentum shifts along the laser propagation are investigated by the time-dependent perturbation theory for diatomic molecules, such as H$_2^+$, N$_2$ and O$_2$. Such longitudinal momentum shifts characterize the photon momentum sharing in atoms and molecules, and oscillate with respect to photon energies, presenting the double-slit interference structure. The atomic and molecular contributions are disentangled analytically, which gives intuitive picture how the double-slit interference structure is formed. Calculation results show the longitudinal photoelectron momentum distribution depends on the internuclear distance, molecular orientation and photon energy. The current laser technology is ready to approve these theoretical predictions.

Wetting Transitions of Condensed Droplets on Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Two-Tier Roughness

Although realizing wetting transitions of droplets spontaneously on solid rough surfaces is quite challenging, it is becoming a key research topic in many practical applications which require highly efficient removal of liquid. We report wetting transitions of condensed droplets occurring spontaneously on pillared surfaces with two-tier roughness owing to excellent superhydrophobicity. The phenomenon results from further decreased Laplace pressure on the top side of the individual droplet when its size becomes comparable to the scale of the micropillars, which leads to a surprising robust spontaneous wetting transition, from valleys to tops of the pillars. A simple scaling law is derived theoretically, which demonstrates that the critical size of the droplet is determined by the space of the micropillars. For this reason, highly efficient removal of water benefits greatly from smaller micropillar space. Furthermore, three wetting transition modes exist, in which the in situ wetting behaviors are in good agreement with our quantitative theoretical analysis.
