Wetting Transitions of Condensed Droplets on Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Two-Tier Roughness

Although realizing wetting transitions of droplets spontaneously on solid rough surfaces is quite challenging, it is becoming a key research topic in many practical applications which require highly efficient removal of liquid. We report wetting transitions of condensed droplets occurring spontaneously on pillared surfaces with two-tier roughness owing to excellent superhydrophobicity. The phenomenon results from further decreased Laplace pressure on the top side of the individual droplet when its size becomes comparable to the scale of the micropillars, which leads to a surprising robust spontaneous wetting transition, from valleys to tops of the pillars. A simple scaling law is derived theoretically, which demonstrates that the critical size of the droplet is determined by the space of the micropillars. For this reason, highly efficient removal of water benefits greatly from smaller micropillar space. Furthermore, three wetting transition modes exist, in which the in situ wetting behaviors are in good agreement with our quantitative theoretical analysis.

Experimental observation of the elusive double-peak structure in R-dependent strong-field ionization rate of H2+

When a diatomic molecule is ionized by an intense laser field, the ionization rate depends very strongly on the inter-nuclear separation. That dependence exhibits a pronounced maximum at the inter-nuclear separation known as the critical distance. This phenomenon was first demonstrated theoretically in H2+ and became known as charge-resonance enhanced ionization (CREI, in reference to a proposed physical mechanism) or simply enhanced ionisation (EI). All theoretical models of this phenomenon predict a double-peak structure in the R-dependent ionization rate of H2+. However, such double-peak structure has never been observed experimentally. It was even suggested that it is impossible to observe due to fast motion of the nuclear wavepackets. Here we report a few-cycle pump-probe experiment which clearly resolves that elusive double-peak structure. In the experiment, an expanding H2+ ion produced by an intense pump pulse is probed by a much weaker probe pulse. The predicted double-peak structure is clearly seen in delay-dependent kinetic energy spectra of protons when pump and probe pulses are polarized parallel to each other. No structure is seen when the probe is polarized perpendicular to the pump.

BSW process of the slowly evaporating charged black hole

In this paper, we study the BSW process of the slowly evaporating charged black hole. It can be found that the BSW process will also arise near black hole horizon when the evaporation of charged black hole is very slow. But now the background black hole does not have to be an extremal black hole, and it will be approximately an extremal black hole unless it is nearly a huge stationary black hole.

Attosecond pulses at kiloelectronvolt photon energies from high-order harmonic generation with core electrons

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in simultaneous intense near-infrared (NIR) laser light and brilliant x rays above an inner-shell absorption edge is examined. A tightly bound inner-shell electron is transferred into the continuum. Then, NIR light takes over and drives the liberated electron through the continuum until it eventually returns to the cation leading in some cases to recombination and emission of a high-order harmonic (HH) photon that is upshifted by the x-ray photon energy. We develop a theory of this scenario and apply it to $1s$ electrons of neon atoms. The boosted HH light is used to generate a single attosecond pulse in the kiloelectronvolt regime. Prospects for nonlinear x-ray physics and HHG-based spectroscopy involving core orbitals are discussed.

Condensation and jumping relay of droplets on lotus leaf

Dynamic behavior of micro water droplet condensed on a lotus leaf with two-tier roughness is studied. Under laboratory environment, the contact angle of the micro droplet on single micro papilla increases smoothly from 80 deg to 160 deg during the growth of condensed water. The best-known "self-clean" phenomenon, will be lost. A striking observation is the out-of-plane jumping relay of condensed droplets triggered by falling droplets, as well as its sustained speed obtained in continuous jumping relays, enhance the automatic removal of dropwise condensation without the help from any external force. The surface tension energy dissipation is the main reason controlling the critical size of jumping droplet and its onset velocity of rebounding.

Optimal laser pulse design for transferring the coherent nuclear wave packet of H$_2^+$

Within the Franck-Condon approximation, the single ionization of H$_2$ leaves H$_2^+$ in a coherent superposition of 19 nuclear vibrational states. We numerically design an optimal laser pulse train to transfer such a coherent nuclear wave packet to the ground vibrational state of H$_2^+$. The simulation results show that the population of the ground state after the transfer is more than 91%. Frequency analysis of the designed optimal pulse reveals that the transfer principle is mainly an anti-Stokes transition, i.e., the H$_2^+$ in $1sσ_g$ with excited nuclear vibrational states is first pumped to $2pσ_g$ state by the pulse at an appropriate time, and then dumped back to $1sσ_g$ with lower excited or ground vibrational states.

The Gravitational Deflection of Light in F(R)-gravity

The fact that the gravitation could deflect the light trajectory has been confirmed by a large number of observation data, that is consistent with the result calculated by Einstein's gravity. F(R)-gravity is the modification of Einstein's gravity. According to the field equations obtained by the action of the f(R) form, we get a similar Schwarzschild metric. According to the condition that four-dimension momenta of the photon return to zero and that of conservation of covariant momenta, we obtain the equation of motion of the photon in a specific form of f (R)-gravity. We solve the equation to get the gravitational deflection angle of light that grazes the surface of sun and the calculation result is consistent with the experimental observation data.

Attosecond probing of instantaneous AC Stark shifts in helium atoms

Based on numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for either one or two active electrons, we propose a method for observing instantaneous level shifts in an oscillating strong infrared (IR) field in time, using a single tunable attosecond pulse to probe excited states of the perturbed atom. The ionization probability in the combined fields depends on both, the frequency of the attosecond pulse and the time delay between both pulses, since the IR field shifts excited energy levels into and out of resonance with the attosecond probe pulse. We show that this method (i) allows the detection of instantaneous atomic energy gaps with sub-laser-cycle time resolution and (ii) can be applied as an ultrafast gate for more complex processes such as non-sequential double-ionization.

Bubbles created from vacuum fluctuation

We show that the bubbles $S^2\times S^2$can be created from vacuum fluctuation in certain De Sitter universe, so the space-time foam-like structure might really be constructed from bubbles of $S^2\times S^2$ in the very early inflating phase of our universe. But whether such foam-like structure persisted during the later evolution of the universe is a problem unsolved now.
