We give a brief introduction to some of the recent works on finding geometric structures on triangulated surfaces using variational principles.
Several identities similar to the Schlaefli formula are established for tetrahedra in a space of constant curvature.
We study the rigidity of polyhedral surfaces using variational principle. The action functionals are derived from the cosine laws. The main focus of this paper is on the cosine law for a non-triangular region bounded by three possibly disjoint geodesics. Several of these cosine laws were first discovered and used by Fenchel and Nielsen. By studying the derivative of the cosine laws, we discover a uniform approach on several variational principles on polyhedral surfaces with or without boundary. As a consequence, the work of Penner, Bobenko-Springborn and Thurston on rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and circle patterns are extended to a very general context.
We establish the second part of Milnor's conjecture on the volume of simplexes in hyperbolic and spherical spaces. A characterization of the closure of the space of the angle Gram matrices of simplexes is also obtained.
It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.
We study rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and the moduli space of polyhedral surfaces using variational principles. Curvature like quantities for polyhedral surfaces are introduced. Many of them are shown to determine the polyhedral metric up to isometry. The action functionals in the variational approaches are derived from the cosine law and the Lengendre transformation of them. These include energies used by Colin de Verdiere, Braegger, Rivin, Cohen-Kenyon-Propp, Leibon and Bobenko-Springborn for variational principles on triangulated surfaces. Our study is based on a set of identities satisfied by the derivative of the cosine law. These identities which exhibit similarity in all spaces of constant curvature are probably a discrete analogous of the Bianchi identity.
We characterization hyperbolic metrics on compact surfaces with boundary using a variational principle. As a consequence, a new parametrization of the Teichmuller space of compact surface with boundary is produced. In the new parametrization, the Teichmuller space becomes an open convex polytope. It is conjectured that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form can be expressed explicitly in terms of the new coordinate.
In this article, we prove a theorem comparing the dihedral angles of simplices in the hyperbolic, spherical and Euclidean geometries.
Let M be the interior of a compact 3-manifold with non-empty boundary, and T be an ideal (topological) triangulation of M. This paper describes necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of angle structures, semi-angle structures and generalised angle structures on (M; T) respectively in terms of a generalised Euler characteristic function on the solution space of normal surface theory of (M; T). This extends previous work of Kang and Rubinstein, and is itself generalised to a more general setting for 3-dimensional pseudo-manifolds.
We propose an idea in spectroscopy to search for extra spatial dimensions as well as to detect the possible deviation from Newton's inverse-square law at small scale, and we take high-Z hydrogenic systems and muonic atoms as illustrations. The relevant experiments might help to explore more than two extra dimensions scenario in ADD's brane world model and to set constraints for fundamental parameters such as the size of extra dimensions.
A spherical polyhedron surface is a triangulated surface obtained by isometric gluing of spherical triangles. For instance, the boundary of a generic convex polytope in the 3-sphere is a spherical polyhedron surface. This paper investigates these surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. A characterization of spherical polyhedron surfaces in terms of the triangulation and the angle assignment is established.
Considering that gravitational force might deviate from Newton's inverse-square law (ISL) and become much stronger in small scale, we propose a kind of optical spectroscopy experiment to detect this possible deviation and take electronic, muonic and tauonic hydrogen atoms as examples. This experiment might be used to indirectly detect the deviation of ISL down to nanometer scale and to explore the possibility of three extra dimensions in ADD's model, while current direct gravity tests cannot break through micron scale and go beyond two extra dimensions scenario.
We propose an approach to find constant curvature metrics on triangulated closed 3-manifolds using a finite dimensional variational method whose energy function is the volume. The concept of an angle structure on a tetrahedron and on a triangulated closed 3-manifold is introduced following the work of Casson, Murakami and Rivin. It is proved by A. Kitaev and the author that any closed 3-manifold has a triangulation supporting an angle structure. The moduli space of all angle structures on a triangulated 3-manifold is a bounded open convex polytope in a Euclidean space. The volume of an angle structure is defined. Both the angle structure and the volume are natural generalizations of tetrahedra in the constant sectional curvature spaces and their volume. It is shown that the volume functional can be extended continuously to the compact closure of the moduli space. In particular, the maximum point of the volume functional always exists in the compactification. The main result shows that for a 1-vertex triangulation of a closed 3-manifold if the volume function on the moduli space has a local maximum point, then either the manifold admits a constant curvature Riemannian metric or the manifold contains a non-separating 2-sphere or real projective plane.
Special relativity is generalized to extra dimensions and quantized energy levels of particles are obtained. By calculating the probability of particles' motion in extra dimensions at high temperature of the early universe, it is proposed that the branes may have not existed since the very beginning of the universe, but formed later. Meanwhile, before the formation, particles of the universe may have filled in the whole bulk, not just on the branes. This scenario differs from that in the standard big bang cosmology in which all particles are assumed to be in the 4D spacetime. So, in brane models, whether our universe began from a 4D big bang singularity is questionable. A cosmological constraint on the number of extra dimensions is also given which favors $N\geq 7$.
We show that spectral fluctuation of interaction matrices of yeast a core protein interaction network and a metabolic network follows the description of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory (RMT). Furthermore, we demonstrate that while the global biological networks evaluated belong to GOE, removal of interactions between constituents transitions the networks to systems of isolated modules described by the Poisson statistics of RMT. Our results indicate that although biological networks are very different from other complex systems at the molecular level, they display the same statistical properties at large scale. The transition point provides a new objective approach for the identification of functional modules.
It is proved that the volume of spherical or hyperbolic simplices, when considered as a function of the dihedral angles, can be extended continuously to degenerated simplices.
We introduce a combinatorial curvature flow for PL metrics on compact triangulated 3-manifolds with boundary consisting of surfaces of negative Euler characteristic. The flow tends to find the complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary on a manifold. Some of the basic properties of the combinatorial flow are established. The most important ones is that the evolution of the PL curvature satisfies a combinatorial heat equation. It implies that the total curvature decreases along the flow. The local convergence of the flow to the hyperbolic metric is also established if the triangulation is isotopic to a totally geodesic triangulation.
In this paper we develop an approach to conformal geometry of piecewise flat metrics on manifolds. In particular, we formulate the combinatorial Yamabe problem for piecewise flat metrics. In the case of surfaces, we define the combinatorial Yamabe flow on the space of all piecewise flat metrics associated to a triangulated surface. We show that the flow either develops removable singularities or converges exponentially fast to a constant combinatorial curvature metric. If the singularity develops, we show that the singularity is always removable by a surgery procedure on the triangulation. We conjecture that after finitely many such surgery changes on the triangulation, the flow converges to the constant combinatorial curvature metric as time approaches infinity.
