Lengths of simple loops on surfaces with hyperbolic metrics

Given a compact orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic, there exists a natural pairing between the Teichmueuller space of the surface and the set of homotopy classes of simple loops and arcs. The length pairing sends a hyperbolic metric and a homotopy class of a simple loop or arc to the length of geodesic in its homotopy class. We study this pairing function using the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on Teichmueller space and the Dehn-Thurston coordinates on the space of homotopy classes of curve systems. Our main result establishes Lipschitz type estimates for the length pairing expressed in terms of these coordinates. As a consequence, we reestablish a result of Thurston-Bonahon that the length pairing extends to a continuous map from the product of the Teichmueller space and the space of measured laminations.

Combinatorial Ricci Flows on Surfaces

We show that the analog of Hamilton's Ricci flow in the combinatorial setting produces solutions which converge exponentially fast to Thurston's circle packing on surfaces. As a consequence, a new proof of Thurston's existence of circle packing theorem is obtained. As another consequence, Ricci flow suggests a new algorithm to find circle packings.

Cauchy Inequality and the Space of Measured Laminations

We establish a Cauchy type inequality for the geometric intersection number between two 1-dimensional submanifolds in a surface. Some of the basic results in Thurston's theory of measured laminations on surfaces are derived from the Cauchy inequality.

Torsion Elements in the Mapping Class Group of a Surface

Given a finite set of $r$ points in a closed surface of genus $g$, we consider the torsion elements in the mapping class group of the surface leaving the finite set invariant. We show that the torsion elements generate the mapping class group if and only if $(g, r) \neq (2, 5k+4)$ for some integer $k$.

Products of Positive Dehn-twists on Surfaces

Given a 3-holed sphere decomposition of an orientable closed surface, it is shown that each orientation preserving homeomorphism of the surface is isotopic to a composition AB where A is a product of positive Dehn twists and B is a product of negative Dehn twists on the decomposition curves.

Grothendieck's Reconstruction Principle and 2-dimensional Topology and Geometry

This paper attempts to relate some ideas of Grothendieck in his Esquisse d'un programme and some of the recent results on 2-dimensional topology and geometry. Especially, we shall discuss the Teichmüller theory, the mapping class groups, $SL(2, \bold C)$ representation variety of surface groups, and Thurston's theory of measured laminations.

Automorphisms of the Complex of Curves

This goal of the paper is to show that the automorphisms of the complex of curves in a surface are induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the surface except the surface is the 2-holed torus.

Geodesic Length Functions and Teichmüller Spaces

Given a compact orientable surface with finitely many punctures $Σ$, let $\Cal S(Σ)$ be the set of isotopy classes of essential unoriented simple closed curves in $Σ$. We determine a complete set of relations for a function from $\Cal S(Σ)$ to $\bold R$ to be the geodesic length function of a hyperbolic metric with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on $Σ$. As a conse quence, the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on $Σ$ is reconstructed from an intrinsic $(\bold QP^1, PSL(2, \bold Z))$ structure on $\Cal S(Σ)$.

A Presentation of the Mapping Class Groups

Using the works of Gervais, Harer, Hatcher and Thurston and others, we show that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface has a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Simple Loops on Surfaces and Their Intersection Numbers

Given a compact orientable surface $Σ$, let $\Cal S(Σ)$ be the set of isotopy classes of essential simple loops on $Σ$. We determine a complete set of relations for a function from $\Cal S(Σ)$ to $\bold Z$ to be a geometric intersection number function. As a consequence, we obtain explicit equations in $\bold R^{\Cal S(Σ)}$ and $P(\bold R^{\Cal S(Σ)})$ defining Thurston's space of measured laminations and Thurston's compactification of the Teichmüller space. These equations are not only piecewise integral linear but also semi-real algebraic.
