Which Channel in 6G, Low-rank or Full-rank, more needs RIS from a Perspective of DoF?

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), as an efficient tool to improve receive signal-to-noise ratio, extend coverage and create more spatial diversity, is viewed as a most promising technique for the future wireless networks like 6G. As you know, RIS is very suitable for a special wireless scenario with wireless link between BS and users being completely blocked, i.e., no link. In this paper, we extend its applications to a general scenario, i.e., rank-deficient channel, particularly some extremely low-rank ones such as no link, and line-of-sight (LoS, rank-one). Actually, there are several potential important low-rank applications like low-altitude, satellite, UAV, marine, and deep-space communications. In such a situation, it is found that RIS may make a dramatic degrees of freedom (DoF) enhancement over no RIS. By using a distributed RISs placement, the DoF of channel from BS to user in LoS channel may be even boosted from a low-rank like 0/1 to full-rank. This will achieve an extremely rate improvement via spatial parallel multiple-stream transmission from BS to user. In this paper, we present a complete review of making an in-depth discussion on DoF effect of RIS.

A Two-Stage ISAC Framework for Low-Altitude Economy Based on 5G NR Signals

The evolution of next-generation wireless networks has spurred the vigorous development of the low-altitude economy (LAE). To support this emerging field while remaining compatible with existing network architectures, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) based on 5G New Radio (NR) signals is regarded as a promising solution. However, merely leveraging standard 5G NR signals, such as the Synchronization Signal Block (SSB), presents fundamental limitations in sensing resolution. To address the issue, this paper proposes a two-stage coarse-to-fine sensing framework that utilizes standard 5G NR initial access signals augmented by a custom-designed sparse pilot structure (SPS) for high-precision unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) sensing. In Stage I, we first fuse information from the SSB, Type\#0-PDCCH, and system information block 1 (SIB1) to ensure the initial target detection. In Stage II, a refined estimation algorithm is introduced to overcome the resolution limitations of these signals. Inspired by the sparse array theory, this stage employs a novel SPS, which is inserted into resource blocks (RBs) within the CORSET\#0 bandwidth. To accurately extract the off-grid range and velocity parameters from these sparse pilots, we develop a corresponding high-resolution algorithm based on the weighted unwrapped phase (WUP) technique and the RELAX-based iterative method. Finally, the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm is adopted to prune the redundant detections arising from beam overlap. Comprehensive simulation results demonstrate the superior estimation accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed framework in comparison to other techniques.

Sensing-enabled Secure Rotatable Array System Enhanced by Multi-Layer Transmitting RIS

Programmable metasurfaces and adjustable antennas are promising technologies. The security of a rotatable array system is investigated in this paper. A dual-base-station (BS) architecture is adopted, in which the BSs collaboratively perform integrated sensing of the eavesdropper (the target) and communication tasks. To address the security challenge when the sensing target is located on the main communication link, the problem of maximizing the secrecy rate (SR) under sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio requirements and discrete constraints is formulated. This problem involves the joint optimization of the array pose, the antenna distribution on the array surface, the multi-layer transmitting RIS phase matrices, and the beamforming matrices, which is non-convex. To solve this challenge, an two-stage online algorithm based on the generalized Rayleigh quotient and an offline algorithm based on the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient are proposed. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Compared to conventional schemes without array pose adjustment, the proposed approach achieves approximately 22\% improvement in SR. Furthermore, array rotation provides higher performance gains than position changes.

DoF Analysis and Beamforming Design for Active IRS-aided Multi-user MIMO Wireless Communication in Rank-deficient Channels

Due to its ability of significantly improving data rate, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) will be a potential crucial technique for the future generation wireless networks like 6G. In this paper, we will focus on the analysis of degree of freedom (DoF) in IRS-aided multi-user MIMO network. Firstly, the DoF upper bound of IRS-aided single-user MIMO network, i.e., the achievable maximum DoF of such a system, is derived, and the corresponding results are extended to the case of IRS-aided multiuser MIMO by using the matrix rank inequalities. In particular, in serious rank-deficient, also called low-rank, channels like line-of-sight (LoS), the network DoF may doubles over no-IRS with the help of IRS. To verify the rate performance gain from augmented DoF, three closed-form beamforming methods, null-space projection plus maximize transmit power and maximize receive power (NSP-MTP-MRP), Schmidt orthogonalization plus minimum mean square error (SO-MMSE) and two-layer leakage plus MMSE (TLL-MMSE) are proposed to achieve the maximum DoF. Simulation results shows that IRS does make a dramatic rate enhancement. For example, in a serious deficient channel, the sum-rate of the proposed TLL-MMSE aided by IRS is about twice that of no IRS. This means that IRS may achieve a significant DoF improvement in such a channel.

DNN-based Methods of Jointly Sensing Number and Directions of Targets via a Green Massive H2AD MIMO Receiver

As a green MIMO structure, the heterogeneous hybrid analog-digital H2AD MIMO architecture has been shown to own a great potential to replace the massive or extremely large-scale fully-digital MIMO in the future wireless networks to address the three challenging problems faced by the latter: high energy consumption, high circuit cost, and high complexity. However, how to intelligently sense the number and direction of multi-emitters via such a structure is still an open hard problem. To address this, we propose a two-stage sensing framework that jointly estimates the number and direction values of multiple targets. Specifically, three target number sensing methods are designed: an improved eigen-domain clustering (EDC) framework, an enhanced deep neural network (DNN) based on five key statistical features, and an improved one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) utilizing full eigenvalues. Subsequently, a low-complexity and high-accuracy DOA estimation is achieved via the introduced online micro-clustering (OMC-DOA) method. Furthermore, we derive the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the H2AD under multiple-source conditions as a theoretical performance benchmark. Simulation results show that the developed three methods achieve 100\% number of targets sensing at moderate-to-high SNRs, while the improved 1D-CNN exhibits superior under extremely-low SNR conditions. The introduced OMC-DOA outperforms existing clustering and fusion-based DOA methods in multi-source environments.

Multi-Branch DNN and CRLB-Ratio-Weight Fusion for Enhanced DOA Sensing via a Massive H$^2$AD MIMO Receiver

As a green MIMO structure, massive H$^2$AD is viewed as a potential technology for the future 6G wireless network. For such a structure, it is a challenging task to design a low-complexity and high-performance fusion of target direction values sensed by different sub-array groups with fewer use of prior knowledge. To address this issue, a lightweight Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB)-ratio-weight fusion (WF) method is proposed, which approximates inverse CRLB of each subarray using antenna number reciprocals to eliminate real-time CRLB computation. This reduces complexity and prior knowledge dependence while preserving fusion performance. Moreover, a multi-branch deep neural network (MBDNN) is constructed to further enhance direction-of-arrival (DOA) sensing by leveraging candidate angles from multiple subarrays. The subarray-specific branch networks are integrated with a shared regression module to effectively eliminate pseudo-solutions and fuse true angles. Simulation results show that the proposed CRLB-ratio-WF method achieves DOA sensing performance comparable to CRLB-based methods, while significantly reducing the reliance on prior knowledge. More notably, the proposed MBDNN has superior performance in low-SNR ranges. At SNR $= -15$ dB, it achieves an order-of-magnitude improvement in estimation accuracy compared to CRLB-ratio-WF method.

Enhanced channel estimation for near-field IRS-aided multi-user MIMO system via a large deep residual network

In this paper, the channel estimation (CE) of intelligent reflecting surface-aided near-field (NF) multi-user communication is investigated. Initially, the least square (LS) estimator and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator for the estimated channel are designed, their mean square errors (MSEs) are derived, and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to serve as a benchmark for performance evaluation. Subsequently, in view of the fact that the NF channel model is more sensitive to distance variations compared to the far-field model, this leads to pronounced discrepancies in the user channel characteristics in different regions. To effectively capture and utilize these diverse channel features, users are initially divided into distinct regions predicated on pivotal parameters, such as channel angle and distance. Correspondingly, a user region classifier based on convolutional neural networks is designed. Then, to fully harness the potential of deep residual networks (DRNs) in denoising, the aforementioned CE problem is reconceptualized as a denoising task, and a DRN-driven single region NF CE network, named SR-DRN-NFCE, is proposed. In addition, by integrating SR-DRN-NFCE networks corresponding to different regions and conducting joint training in a federated learning (FL) manner, a new network is obtained, named FL-DRN-NFCE. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FL-DRN-NFCE network outperforms LS, MMSE, and no residual connections in terms of MSE, and the proposed FL-DRN-NFCE method has higher CE accuracy than the SR-DRN-NFCE method.

Energy Efficiency Analysis of Active RIS-enhanced Wireless Network under Power-Sum Constraint

Recently, as a green wireless technology, active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) attracts numerous research activities due to its amplifying ability to combat the double-fading effect compared to passive one. How about its energy efficiency (EE) over passive one? Below, the EE of active RIS-aided wireless network in Rayleigh fading channels is analyzed. Using the law of large numbers, EE is derived as a function of five factors: power allocation factor, the number (N) of RIS elements, the total power, the noise variances at RIS and at user. To evaluate each factor's impact, the simple EE function for the concerning factor is given with others fixed. To assess the impact of N on EE, we establish an equation with the EE of active RIS equaling that of passive one, and three methods, bisection, Newton's method, and simulated annealing, are designed to find the roots of this equation. Simulation results show that as N tends to medium-scale or large-scale, the asymptotic performance formula is consistent with the exact EE expression well. As N varies from small-scale to large-scale, the active RIS intersects passive one at some point. When N< N_0, active RIS performs better than passive one in terms of EE. Otherwise, there is a converse conclusion.

Near-Field Directional Modulation for RIS-Aided Movable Antenna MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments

Movable antennas (MAs) are a promising technology to achieve a significant enhancement in rate for future wireless networks. The pioneering investigation on near-field directional modulation design for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted MA system is presented, with the base station equipped with a MA array. To maximize the secrecy sum rate (Max-SSR) with hardware impairments (HWIs) and imperfect channel state information (CSI), which involves a joint optimization of beamforming vectors for confidential messages and artificial noise (AN), power allocation factors, phase shift matrices, MA positions, and receive beamforming vectors. Firstly, the transmit beamforming vectors and phase shift matrices are iteratively optimized, leveraging leakage theory and phase alignment techniques. Then, two novel algorithms for discrete MA positioning are proposed, respectively, employing uniform and compressed sensing (CS)-based non-uniform grouping strategies. Subsequently, the AN is considered and designed as the additional energy required for zero-space projection, and the receive beamforming vector is derived using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. The proposed algorithms have low computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Under HWIs and imperfect CSI, the proposed algorithm can achieve a 28\% enhancement in SSR performance while reducing the number of antennas by 37.5\% compared to traditional fixed-position antenna (FPA) systems.

Hybrid RIS-Enhanced ISAC Secure Systems: Joint Optimization in the Presence of an Extended Target

Unlike the conventional fully-passive and fully-active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), a hybrid RIS consisting of active and passive reflection units has recently been concerned, which can exploit their integrated advantages to alleviate the RIS-induced path loss. In this paper, we investigate a novel security strategy where the multiple hybrid RIS-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system communicates with downlink users and senses an extended target synchronously. Assuming imperfectly known target location (TL), we consider the joint design of the transmit signal and receive filter bank of the base station (BS), the receive beamformers of all users and the weights of the hybrid RIS. An optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the worst-case sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) subject to secure communication and system power budget constraints. To address this non-convex problem, we leverage generalized fractional programming (GFP) and penalty-dual-decomposition (PDD), and propose a security solution that efficiently optimizes all variables by employing convex optimization approaches. Simulation results show that by incorporating the multiple hybrid RIS into the optimization design, the extended target detection and secure transmission performance of ISAC systems are improved over the state-of-the-art RIS-aided ISAC approaches.

AI-empowered Channel Estimation for Block-based Active IRS-enhanced Hybrid-field IoT Network

In this paper, channel estimation (CE) for uplink hybrid-field communications involving multiple Internet of Things (IoT) devices assisted by an active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is investigated. Firstly, to reduce the complexity of near-field (NF) channel modeling and estimation between IoT devices and active IRS, a sub-blocking strategy for active IRS is proposed. Specifically, the entire active IRS is divided into multiple smaller sub-blocks, so that IoT devices are located in the far-field (FF) region of each sub block, while also being located in the NF region of the entire active IRS. This strategy significantly simplifies the channel model and reduces the parameter estimation dimension by decoupling the high-dimensional NF channel parameter space into low dimensional FF sub channels. Subsequently, the relationship between channel approximation error and CE error with respect to the number of sub blocks is derived, and the optimal number of sub blocks is solved based on the criterion of minimizing the total error. In addition, considering that the amplification capability of active IRS requires power consumption, a closed-form expression for the optimal power allocation factor is derived. To further reduce the pilot overhead, a lightweight CE algorithm based on convolutional autoencoder (CAE) and multi-head attention mechanism, called CAEformer, is designed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound is derived to evaluate the proposed algorithm's performance. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the proposed CAEformer network significantly outperforms the conventional least square and minimum mean square error scheme in terms of estimation accuracy.

Machine Learning-based Near-field Emitter Location Sensing via Grouped Hybrid Analog and Digital XL-MIMO Receive Array

As a green MIMO structure, the partially-connected hybrid analog and digital (PC-HAD) structure has been widely used in the far-field (FF) scenario for it can significantly reduce the hardware cost and complexity of large-scale or extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) array. Recently, near-field (NF) emitter localization including direction-of-arrival (DOA) and range estimations has drawn a lot of attention, but is rarely explored via PC-HAD structure. In this paper, we first analyze the impact of PC-HAD structure on the NF emitter localization and observe that the phase ambiguity (PA) problem caused by PC-HAD structure can be removed inherently with low-latency in the NF scenario. To obtain the exact NF DOA estimation results, we propose a grouped PC-HAD structure, which is capable of dividing the NF DOA estimation problem into multiple FF DOA estimation problems via partitioning the large-scale PC-HAD array into small-scale groups. An angle calibration method is developed to address the inconsistency among these FF DOA estimation problems. Then, to eliminate PA and improve the NF emitter localization performance, we develop three machine learning (ML)-based methods, i.e., two low-complexity data-driven clustering-based methods and one model-driven regression method, namely RegNet. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of NF emitter localization for the proposed grouped PC-HAD structure is derived and reveals that localization performance will decrease with the increasing of the number of groups. The simulation results show that the proposed methods can achieve CRLB at different SNR regions, the RegNet has great performance advantages at low SNR regions and the clustering-based methods have much lower computation complexity.

Secure Directional Modulation with Movable Antenna Array Aided by RIS

In this paper, to fully exploit the performance gains from moveable antennas (MAs) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a RIS-aided directional modulation \textcolor{blue}{(DM)} network with movable antenna at base station (BS) is established Based on the principle of DM, a BS equipped with MAs transmits legitimate information to a single-antenna user (Bob) while exploiting artificial noise (AN) to degrade signal reception at the eavesdropper (Eve). The combination of AN and transmission beamforming vectors is modeled as joint beamforming vector (JBV) to achieve optimal power allocation. The objective is to maximize the achievable secrecy rate (SR) by optimizing MAs antenna position, phase shift matrix (PSM) of RIS, and JBV. The limited movable range (MR) and discrete candidate positions of the MAs at the BS are considered, which renders the optimization problem non-convex. To address these challenges, an optimization method under perfect channel state information (CSI) is firstly designed, in which the MAs antenna positions are obtained using compressive sensing (CS) technology, and JBV and PSM are iteratively optimized. Then, the design method and SR performance under imperfect CSI is investigated. The proposed algorithms have fewer iterations and lower complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that MAs outperform fixed-position antennas in SR performance when there is an adequately large MR available.

Multi-user Wireless Image Semantic Transmission over MIMO Multiple Access Channels

This paper focuses on a typical uplink transmission scenario over multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel (MIMO-MAC) and thus propose a multi-user learnable CSI fusion semantic communication (MU-LCFSC) framework. It incorporates CSI as the side information into both the semantic encoders and decoders to generate a proper feature mask map in order to produce a more robust attention weight distribution. Especially for the decoding end, a cooperative successive interference cancellation procedure is conducted along with a cooperative mask ratio generator, which flexibly controls the mask elements of feature mask maps. Numerical results verify the superiority of proposed MU-LCFSC compared to DeepJSCC-NOMA over 3 dB in terms of PSNR.

DNN-based Enhanced DOA Sensing via Massive MIMO Receiver with Switches-based Hybrid Architecture

Switches-based hybrid architecture has attracted much attention, especially in directional-of-arrival (DOA) sensing, due to its ability of significantly reducing the hardware cost by compressing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) arrays with switching networks. However, this structure will lead to a degradation in the degrees of freedom (DOF) and accuracy of DOA estimation. To address these two issues, we first propose a switches-based sparse hybrid array (SW-SHA). In this method, we design a dynamic switching network to form a synthesized sparse array, i.e., SW-SHA, that can enlarge the virtual aperture obtained by the difference co-array, thereby significantly enhancing the DOF. Second, in order to improve the DOA estimation accuracy of switches-based hybrid arrays, a deep neural network (DNN)-based method called ASN-DNN is proposed. It includes an antenna selection network (ASN) for optimizing the switch connections based on the criterion of minimizing the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) under the peak sidelobe level (PSL) constraint and a DNN for DOA estimation. Then by integrating ASN and DNN into an iterative process, the ASN-DNN is obtained. Furthermore, the closed-form expression of CRLB for DOA estimation is derived to evaluate the performance lower bound of switches-based hybrid arrays and provide a benchmark for ASN-DNN. The simulation results show the proposed ASN-DNN can achieve a greater performance than traditional methods, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions.

A Novel RFID Authentication Protocol Based on A Block-Order-Modulus Variable Matrix Encryption Algorithm

In this paper, authentication for mobile radio frequency identification (RFID) systems with low-cost RFID sensor tags is studied. Firstly, an adaptive modulus (AM) encryption algorithm is proposed. Subsequently, in order to enhance the security without additional storage of new key matrices, a self-updating encryption order (SUEO) algorithm is designed. Furthermore, a diagonal block local transpose key matrix (DBLTKM) encryption algorithm is presented, which effectively expands the feasible domain of the key space. Based on the above three algorithms, a novel joint AM-SUEO-DBLTKM encryption algorithm is constructed. Making full use of the advantages of the proposed joint algorithm, a two-way RFID authentication protocol, named AM-SUEO-DBLTKM-RFID, is proposed for mobile RFID systems. In addition, the Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) logic and security analysis indicate that the proposed AM-SUEO-DBLTKM-RFID protocol can effectively combat various typical attacks. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed AM-SUEO-DBLTKM algorithm can save 99.59% of tag storage over traditional algorithms. Finally, the low computational complexity as well as the low storage cost of the proposed AM-SUEO-DBLTKM-RFID protocol facilitates deployment within low-cost RFID sensor tags.

Multi-modal Iterative and Deep Fusion Frameworks for Enhanced Passive DOA Sensing via a Green Massive H2AD MIMO Receiver

Most existing DOA estimation methods assume ideal source incident angles with minimal noise. Moreover, directly using pre-estimated angles to calculate weighted coefficients can lead to performance loss. Thus, a green multi-modal (MM) fusion DOA framework is proposed to realize a more practical, low-cost and high time-efficiency DOA estimation for a H$^2$AD array. Firstly, two more efficient clustering methods, global maximum cos\_similarity clustering (GMaxCS) and global minimum distance clustering (GMinD), are presented to infer more precise true solutions from the candidate solution sets. Based on this, an iteration weighted fusion (IWF)-based method is introduced to iteratively update weighted fusion coefficients and the clustering center of the true solution classes by using the estimated values. Particularly, the coarse DOA calculated by fully digital (FD) subarray, serves as the initial cluster center. The above process yields two methods called MM-IWF-GMaxCS and MM-IWF-GMinD. To further provide a higher-accuracy DOA estimation, a fusion network (fusionNet) is proposed to aggregate the inferred two-part true angles and thus generates two effective approaches called MM-fusionNet-GMaxCS and MM-fusionNet-GMinD. The simulation outcomes show the proposed four approaches can achieve the ideal DOA performance and the CRLB. Meanwhile, proposed MM-fusionNet-GMaxCS and MM-fusionNet-GMinD exhibit superior DOA performance compared to MM-IWF-GMaxCS and MM-IWF-GMinD, especially in extremely-low SNR range.
