Twist-three Fragmentation Function Contribution to the Single Spin Asymmetry in pp Collisions

We study the twist-three fragmentation function contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production in pp collisions, pp->h+X. In particular, we evaluate the so-called derivative contribution which dominates the spin asymmetry in the forward direction of the polarized proton. With certain parametrizations for the twist-three fragmentation function, we estimate its contribution to the asymmetry of pi0 production at RHIC energy. We find that the contribution is sizable and might be responsible for the big difference between the asymmetries in eta and pi0 productions observed by the STAR collaboration at RHIC.

Advection-dominated accretion, jets and the spectral energy distribution of LINERs

Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) represent the bulk of the AGN population in the present-day universe and they trace low-level accreting supermassive black holes. The observational properties of LLAGNs suggest that their central engines are intrinsically different from those of more luminous AGNs. It has been suggested that accretion in LLAGNs occurs via an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) associated with strong jets. In order to probe the accretion physics in LLAGNs as a class, we model the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 24 LINERs (taken from a recent compilation by Eracleous et al.) with a coupled accretion-jet model. The accretion flow is modeled as an inner ADAF outside of which there is a truncated standard thin disk. These SEDs include radio, near-IR to near-UV HST data, and Chandra X-ray data. We find that the radio emission is severely underpredicted by ADAF models but can be explained by the relativistic jet. The origin of the X-ray radiation in most sources can be explained by three distinct scenarios: the X-rays can be dominated by emission from the ADAF, the jet, or from both components contributing at similar levels. From the model fits, we estimate important parameters of the central engine of LINERs, such as the mass accretion rate -- relevant for studies of the feeding of AGNs -- and the mass-loss rate in the jet and the jet power -- relevant for studies of the kinetic feedback from jets.

Phases of Augmented Hadronic Light-Front Wave Functions

It is an important question whether the final/initial state gluonic interactions which lead to naive-time-reversal-odd single-spin asymmetries and diffraction at leading twist can be associated in a definite way with the light-front wave function hadronic eigensolutions of QCD. We use light-front time-ordered perturbation theory to obtain augmented light-front wave functions which contain an imaginary phase which depends on the choice of advanced or retarded boundary condition for the gauge potential in light-cone gauge. We apply this formalism to the wave functions of the valence Fock states of nucleons and pions, and show how this illuminates the factorization properties of naive-time-reversal-odd transverse momentum dependent observables which arise from rescattering. In particular, one calculates the identical leading-twist Sivers function from the overlap of augmented light-front wavefunctions that one obtains from explicit calculations of the single-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton-polarized nucleon scattering where the required phases come from the final-state rescattering of the struck quark with the nucleon spectators.

Dihadron Azimuthal Correlation from Collins Effect in Unpolarized Hadron Collisions

We study the dihadron azimuthal correlation produced nearly back-to-back in unpolarized hadron collisions, arising from the product of two Collins fragmentation functions. Using the latest Collins fragmentation functions extracted from the global analysis of available experimental data, we make predictions for the azimuthal correlation of two-pion production in $pp$ collisions at RHIC energies. We find that the correlation is sizable in the mid-rapidity region for moderate jet transverse momentum.

Reprocessed emission from warped accretion discs induced by the Bardeen-Petterson effect

The broad Balmer emission-line profiles resulting from the reprocessing of UV/X-ray radiation from a warped accretion disc induced by the Bardeen-Petterson effect are studied. We adopt a thin warped disc geometry and a central ring-like illuminating source in our model. We compute the steady-state shape of the warped disc numerically, and then use it in the calculation of the line profile. We find that, from the outer radius to the inner radius of the disc, the warp is twisted by an angle of $\simπ$ before being flattened efficiently into the equatorial plane. The profiles obtained depend weakly on the illuminating source radius in the range from $3r_{g}$ to $10r_g$, but depend strongly on this radius when it approaches the marginally stable orbit of an extreme Kerr black hole. Double- or triplet-peaked line profiles are present in most cases when the illuminating source radius is low. The triplet-peaked line profiles observed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey may be a {"}signature" of a warped disc.

Monte Carlo simulations of global Compton cooling in inner regions of hot accretion flows

Hot accretion flows such as advection-dominated accretion flows are generally optically thin in the radial direction. Thus photons generated at some radii can cool or heat electrons at other radii via Compton scattering. Such global Compton scattering has previously been shown to be important for the dynamics of accretion flows. Here, we extend previous treatments of this problem by using accurate global general relativistic Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on an inner region of the accretion flow (R < 600R_g), for which we obtain a global self-consistent solution. As compared to the initial, not self-consistent solution, the final solution has both the cooling rate and the electron temperature significantly reduced at radii >=10 gravitational radii. On the other hand, the radiation spectrum of the self-consistent solution has the shape similar to that of the initial iteration, except for the high-energy cut-off being at an energy lower by a factor of ~2 and the bolometric luminosity decreased by a factor of ~2. We also compare the global Compton scattering model with local models in spherical and slab geometry. We find that the slab model approximates the global model significantly better than the spherical one. Still, neither local model gives a good approximation to the radial profile of the cooling rate, and the differences can be up to two orders of magnitude. The local slab model underestimates the cooling rate at outer regions whereas it overestimates that rate at inner regions. We compare our modelling results to observed hard-state spectra of black-hole binaries and find an overall good agreement provided any disc outflow is weak. We find that general-relativistic effects in flows which dynamics is modified by global Comptonization is crucial in approaching this agreement.

Electron heating and acceleration by magnetic reconnection in hot accretion flows

Both analytical and numerical works show that magnetic reconnection must occur in hot accretion flows. This process will effectively heat and accelerate electrons. In this paper we use the numerical hybrid simulation of magnetic reconnection plus test-electron method to investigate the electron acceleration and heating due to magnetic reconnection in hot accretion flows. We consider fiducial values of density, temperature, and magnetic parameter $β_e$ (defined as the ratio of the electron pressure to the magnetic pressure) of the accretion flow as $n_{0} \sim 10^{6} {\rm cm^{-3}}$, $T_{e}^0\sim 2\times 10^9 {\rm K}$, and $β_e=1$. We find that electrons are heated to a higher temperature $T_{e}=5\times 10^9$K, and a fraction $η\sim 8%$ of electrons are accelerated into a broken power-law distribution, $dN(γ)\propto γ^{-p}$, with $p\approx 1.5$ and 4 below and above $\sim 1$ MeV, respectively. We also investigate the effect of varying $β$ and $n_0$. We find that when $β_e$ is smaller or $n_0$ is larger, i.e, the magnetic field is stronger, $T_e$, $η$, and $p$ all become larger.

Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering at small x

We study the semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small $x$. A transverse momentum dependent factorization is found consistent with the results calculated in the small-$x$ approaches, such as the color-dipole framework and the color glass condensate, in the appropriate kinematic region at the lowest order. The transverse momentum dependent quark distribution can be studied in this process as a probe for the small-$x$ saturation physics. Especially, the ratio of quark distributions as a function of transverse momentum at different $x$ demonstrates strong dependence on the saturation scale. The $Q^2$ dependence of the same ratio is also studied by applying the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation method.

Transverse momentum dependent quark distributions and polarized Drell-Yan processes

We study the spin-dependent quark distributions at large transverse momentum. We derive their transverse momentum behaviors in the collinear factorization approach in this region. We further calculate the angular distribution of the Drell-Yan lepton pair production with polarized beams and present the results in terms of the collinear twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. In the intermediate transverse momentum region, we find that the two pproaches: the collinear factorization and the transverse momentum dependent factorization approaches are consistent in the description of the lepton pair angular distributions.

Revisiting the "Fundamental Plane" of Black Hole Activity at Extremely Low Luminosities

We investigate the origin of the X-ray emission in low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). Yuan & Cui (2005) predicted that the X-ray emission should originate from jets rather than from an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) when the X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$ of the source is below a critical value of $L_{\rm X,crit} \approx 10^{-6}L_{\rm Edd}$. This prediction implies that the X-ray spectrum in such sources should be fitted by jets rather than ADAFs. Furthermore, below $L_{\rm X,crit}$ the correlation between radio ($L_{\rm R}$) and X-ray ($L_{\rm X}$) luminosities and the black hole mass ($M$)--the so-called fundamental plane of black hole activity--should deviate from the general correlation obtained by Merloni, Heinz & Di Matteo (2003) and become steeper. The Merloni et al. correlation is described by ${\rm log}L_{\rm R} =0.6{\rm log}L_{\rm X}+0.78{\rm log}M+7.33$, while the predicted correlation is ${\rm log}L_{\rm R}=1.23{\rm log}L_{\rm X} +0.25{\rm log}M-13.45$. We collect data from the literature to check the validity of these two expectations. We find that among the 16 LLAGNs with good X-ray and radio spectra, 13 are consistent with the Yuan & Cui prediction. For the 22 LLAGNs with $L_{\rm X} < L_{\rm X,crit}$, the fundamental plane correlation is described by ${\rm log}L_{\rm R}=1.22{\rm log}L_{\rm X}+0.23{\rm log}M-12.46 $, also in excellent agreement with the prediction.

Steady state solution of warped accretion discs

We consider a thin accretion disc warped due to the Bardeen-Petterson effect, presenting both analytical and numerical solutions for the situation that the two viscosity coefficients vary with radius as power law, with the two power law indices not necessarily equal. The analytical solutions are compared with numerical ones, showing that our new analytical solution is more accurate than previous one, which overestimates the inclination changing in the outer disc. Our new analytical solution is appropriate for moderately warped discs, while for extremely misaligned disc, only numerical solution is appropriate.

Collins Fragmentation and the Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry

We study the Collins mechanism for the single transverse spin asymmetry in the collinear factorization approach. The correspondent twist-three fragmentation function is identified. We show that the Collins function calculated in this approach is universal. We further examine its contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry of semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering and demonstrate that the transverse momentum dependent and twist-three collinear approaches are consistent in the intermediate transverse momentum region where both apply.

A Magnetohydrodynamic Model for the Formation of Episodic Jets

Episodic ejection of plasma blobs have been observed in many black hole systems. While steady, continuous jets are believed to be associated with large-scale open magnetic fields, what causes the episodic ejection of blobs remains unclear. Here by analogy with the coronal mass ejection on the Sun, we propose a magnetohydrodynamical model for episodic ejections from black holes associated with the closed magnetic fields in an accretion flow. Shear and turbulence of the accretion flow deform the field and result in the formation of a flux rope in the disk corona. Energy and helicity are accumulated and stored until a threshold is reached. The system then loses its equilibrium and the flux rope is thrust outward by the magnetic compression force in a catastrophic way. Our calculations show that for parameters appropriate for the black hole in our Galactic center, the plasmoid can attain relativistic speeds in about 35 minutes.

Drell-Yan Lepton Pair Azimuthal Asymmetry in Hadronic Processes

We study the azimuthal asymmetry in the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic scattering processes at moderate transverse momentum region, taking into account the contributions from the twist-three quark-gluon correlations from the unpolarized hadrons. The contributions are found to dominate the asymmetry, and are not power suppressed by q_\perp/Q at small q_\perp where q_\perp and Q are the transverse momentum and invariant mass of the lepton pair. Accordingly, the Lam-Tung relation will be violated at this momentum region, and its violation depends on the twist-three functions. However, at large transverse momentum q_\perp\sim Q, the Lam-Tung relation still holds because all corrections are power suppressed by Λ^2/q_\perp^2\sim Λ^2/Q^2 where Λis the typical nonperturbative scale.

QCD Evolution of the Transverse Momentum Dependent Correlations

We study the QCD evolution for the twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions associated with the transverse momentum odd quark distributions. Different from that for the leading twist quark distributions, these evolution equations involve more general twist-three functions beyond the correlation functions themselves. They provide important information on nucleon structure, and can be studied in the semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan lepton pair production in $pp$ scattering process.

Accessing tri-gluon correlations in the nucleon via the single spin asymmetry in open charm production

We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry for open charm production in $pp$ collisions within the QCD collinear factorization approach. We include contributions from both twist-three quark-gluon and tri-gluon correlation functions. We find that the quark-gluon correlation functions alone generate only a very small asymmetry for open charm production in the kinematic region of current interest at RHIC, so that the observation of any significant single-spin asymmetry would be a clear indication of the presence of tri-gluon correlations inside a polarized proton. We furthermore demonstrate that the tri-gluon contribution could be very different for the production of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons. These features make the single spin asymmetry in open charm production in polarized $pp$ collisions at RHIC an excellent probe of tri-gluon correlation functions.

Self-Similar Solution of Hot Accretion Flows with Ordered Magnetic Field and Outflow

Observations and numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations indicate the existence of outflows and ordered large-scale magnetic fields in the inner region of hot accretion flows. In this paper we present the self-similar solutions for advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) with outflows and ordered magnetic fields. Stimulated by numerical simulations, we assume that the magnetic field has a strong toroidal component and a vertical component in addition to a stochastic component. We obtain the self-similar solutions to the equations describing the magnetized ADAFs, taking into account the dynamical effects of the outflow. We compare the results with the canonical ADAFs and find that the dynamical properties of ADAFs such as radial velocity, angular velocity and temperature can be significantly changed in the presence of ordered magnetic fields and outflows. The stronger the magnetic field is, the lower the temperature of the accretion flow will be, and the faster the flow rotates. The relevance to observations is briefly discussed.
