Global Compton heating and cooling in hot accretion flows

The hot accretion flow is usually optically thin in the radial direction, therefore the photons produced at one radius can travel for a long distance without being absorbed. These photons thus can heat or cool electrons at other radii via Compton scattering. This effect has been ignored in most previous works on hot accretion flows and is the focus of this paper. If the mass accretion rate is described by $\dot{M}=\dot{M}_0(r/r_{\rm out})^{0.3}$ and $r_{\rm out}=10^4r_{\rm s}$, we find that the Compton scattering will play a cooling and heating role at $r\la 5\times 10^3 r_{\rm s}$ and $r\ga 5\times 10^3 r_{\rm s}$, respectively. Specifically, when $\dot{M}_0>0.1L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$, the Compton cooling rate is larger than the local viscous heating rate at certain radius; therefore the cooling effect is important. When $\dot{M}_0>2L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$, the heating effect at $r_{\rm out}$ is important. We can obtain the self-consistent steady solution with the global Compton effect included only if $\dot{M}_0\la L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$ for $r_{\rm out}=50r_{\rm s}$, which corresponds to $L\la 0.02L_{\rm Edd}$. Above this rate the Compton cooling is so strong at the inner region that hot solutions can not exist. On the other hand, for $r_{\rm out}= 10^5r_{\rm s}$, we can only get the self-consistent solution when $\dot{M}_0\la L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$ and $L<0.01L_{\rm Edd}$. Above this accretion rate the equilibrium temperature of electrons at $r_{\rm out}$ is higher than the virial temperature as a result of strong Compton heating, so the accretion is suppressed. In this case the activity of the black hole will likely "oscillate" between an active and an inactive phases, with the oscillation timescale being the radiative timescale of the gas at $r_{\rm out}$.

Origin of the X-ray Emission in the Nuclei of FR Is

We investigate the X-ray origin in FRIs using the multi-waveband high resolution data of eight FR I sources, which have very low Eddington ratios. We fit their multi-waveband spectrum using a coupled accretion-jet model. We find that X-ray emission in the source with the highest L_X (~1.8*10^-4 L_Edd) is from the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). Four sources with moderate L_X(~several*10^-6 L_Edd) are complicated. The X-ray emission of one FR I is from the jet, and the other three is from the sum of the jet and ADAF. The X-ray emission in the three least luminous sources (L_X<1.0*10^-6L_Edd) is dominated by the jet. These results roughly support the predictions of Yuan and Cui(2005) where they predict that when the X-ray luminosity of the system is below a critical value, the X-radiation will not be dominated by the emission from the ADAF any longer, but by the jet. We also find that the accretion rates in four sources must be higher than the Bondi rates, which implies that other fuel supply (e.g., stellar winds) inside the Bondi radius should be important.

Hyperon Polarization in Unpolarized Scattering Processes

Transverse polarization in the Hyperon production in the unpolarized deep inelastic scattering and pp collisions is studied in the twist-three approach, considering the contribution from the quark-gluon-antiquark correlation distribution in nucleon. We further compare our results for deep inelastic scattering to a transverse momentum dependent factorization approach, and find consistency between the two approaches in the intermediate transverse momentum region. We also find that in pp collisions, there are only derivative terms contributions, and the non-derivative terms vanish.

Origin of X-ray Emission from Transient Black Hole Candidates in Quiescence

We report results from a systematic study of X-ray emission from black hole transients in quiescence. In this state mass accretion is thought to follow the geometry of an outer optically thick, geometrically thin disc and an inner optically thin, geometrically thick radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF). The inner flow is likely also coupled to the jets near the black hole that are often seen in such systems. The goal of the study is to see whether the X-ray emission in the quiescent state is mainly powered by the accretion flow or the jets. Using data from deep XMM-Newton observations of selected black hole transients, we have found that the quiescent X-ray spectra are, to a high precision, of power-law shape in the cases of GRO J1655-40 and V404 Cyg. Such spectra deviate significantly from the expected X-ray spectrum of the RIAF at very low accretion rates. On the other hand, they can naturally be explained by emission from the jets, if the emitting electrons follow a power-law spectral distribution (as is often assumed). The situation remains ambiguous in the case of XTE J1550-564, due to the relatively poorer quality of the data. We discuss the implication of the results.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Heavy Quark and Antiquark Productions

The single transverse spin asymmetries in heavy quark and anti-quark production from the quark-antiquark annihilation channel contribution is studied by taking into account the initial and final state interactions effects. Because of the different color charges, the final state interaction effects lead to about a factor of 3 difference in the spin asymmetry for heavy quark over that for the anti-quark in the valence region of low energy pp collisions. The experimental study of this model-independent prediction shall provide a crucial test for the underlying mechanism for the single spin asymmetry phenomena.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive Hadron Production in pp Scattering from Collins Mechanism

We study the Collins mechanism contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry in inclusive hadron production in pp scattering p^{\uparrow}p\to πX from the leading jet fragmentation. The azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadron in the jet leads to a single spin asymmetry for the produced hadron in the Lab frame. The effect is evaluated in a transverse momentum dependent model that takes into account the transverse momentum dependence in the fragmentation process. We find the asymmetry is comparable in size to the experimental observation at RHIC at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV.

The Influences of Outflow on the Dynamics of Inflow

Both numerical simulations and observations indicate that in an advection-dominated accretion flow most of the accretion material supplied at the outer boundary will not reach the inner boundary. Rather, they are lost via outflow. Previously, the influence of outflow on the dynamics of inflow is taken into account only by adopting a radius-dependent mass accretion rate $\dot{M}=\dot{M}_0 (r/r_{\rm out})^s$ with $s>0$. In this paper, based on a 1.5 dimensional description to the accretion flow, we investigate this problem in more detail by considering the interchange of mass, radial and azimuthal momentum, and the energy between the outflow and inflow. The physical quantities of the outflow is parameterized based on our current understandings to the properties of outflow mainly from numerical simulations of accretion flows. Our results indicate that under reasonable assumptions to the properties of outflow, the main influence of outflow has been properly included by adopting $\dot{M}=\dot{M}_0 (r/r_{\rm out})^s$.

A simplified global solution for an advection-dominated accretion flow

When we model black hole accretion sources such as active galactic nuclei and black hole X-ray binaries as advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), it is neccesary to use the global solution to the equations rather than the simpler self-similar solution, since the latter is inaccurate in the region near the black hole where most of the radiation is emitted. However, technically, it is a difficult task to calculate the global solution because of the transonic nature of the flow, which makes it a two-point boundary value problem. In this paper we propose a simplified approach for calculating the global ADAF solution. We replace the radial momentum equation by a simple algebraic relation between the angular velocity of the gas and the Keplerian angular velocity, while keeping all other equations unchanged. It is then easy to solve the differential energy equations to obtain an approximate global solution. By adjusting the free parameters, we find that for almost any accretion rate and for $α=0.1-0.3$ we can get good simplified global solutions. The predicted spectra from the approximate solutions are very close to the spectra obtained from the true global solutions.

Heavy Quarkonium Production in Single Transverse Polarized High Energy Scattering

We formulate the single transverse spin asymmetry in heavy quarkonium production in lepton-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon collisions in the non-relativistic limit. We find that the asymmetry is very sensitive to the production mechanism. The final state interactions with the heavy quark and antiquark cancel out among themselves when the pair are produced in a color-single configuration, or cancel out with the initial state interaction in pp scattering when they are in color-octet. As a consequence, the asymmetry is nonzero in ep collisions only in the color-octet model, whereas in pp collisions only in the color-singlet model.

Collins Asymmetry at Hadron Colliders

We study the Collins effect in the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering. From the detailed analysis of one-gluon and two-gluon exchange diagrams contributions, the Collins function is found the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e^+e^- annihilations. The eikonal propagators in these diagrams do not contribute to the phase needed for the Collins-type single spin asymmetry, and the universality is derived as a result of the Ward identity. We argue that this conclusion depends on the momentum flow of the exchanged gluon and the kinematic constraints in the fragmentation process, and is generic and model-independent.

On the Relation Between Mechanisms for Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries

Recent studies have shown that two widely-used mechanisms for single-transverse-spin asymmetries based on either twist-three contributions or on transverse-momentum-dependent (Sivers) parton distributions become identical in a kinematical regime of overlap. This was demonstrated for the so-called soft-gluon-pole and hard-pole contributions to the asymmetry associated with a particular quark-gluon correlation function in the nucleon. In this paper, using semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering as an example, we extend the study to the contributions by soft-fermion poles and by another independent twist-three correlation function. We find that these additional terms organize themselves in such a way as to maintain the mutual consistency of the two mechanisms for single-spin asymmetries.

Azimuthal Asymmetric Distribution of Hadrons Inside a Jet at Hadron Collider

We study the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering, coming from the Collins effect multiplied by the quark transversity distribution. We argue that the Collins function in this process is the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The experimental study of this process will provide us important information on the quark transversity distribution and test the universality of the fragmentation functions.

Hadronic Dijet Imbalance and Transverse-Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions

We compare several recent theoretical studies of the single transverse spin asymmetry in dijet-correlations at hadron colliders. We show that the results of these studies are all consistent. To establish this, we investigate in particular the two-gluon exchange contributions to the relevant initial and final state interactions in the context of a simplifying model. Overall, the results confirm that the dijet imbalance obeys at best a non-standard or "generalized" transverse-momentum-dependent factorization.

On the origin of X-ray emission in some FR Is: ADAF or jet?

We investigate the X-ray origin in FR Is using the radio, submillimetre, optical, and {\em Chandra} X-ray data of a small sample consisting of eight FR I sources. These sources are very dim, with X-ray luminosities $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} \sim 10^{-4}-10^{-8}$ ($L_{\rm X}$ is the X-ray luminosity between 2-10 keV). We try to fit the multiwaveband spectrum using a coupled accretion-jet model. In this model, the accretion flow is described by an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) while in the innermost region of ADAF a fraction of accretion flow is transferred into the vertical direction and forms a jet. We find that X-ray emission in the source with the highest $L_{\rm X}$ ($\sim 1.8 \times 10^{-4}L_{\rm Edd}$) is from the ADAF. The results for the four sources with moderate $L_{\rm X}$ ($\sim$ several $\times 10^{-6}L_{\rm Edd}$) are complicated. Two are mainly from the ADAFs, one from the jet, and the other from the sum of the jet and ADAF. The X-ray emission in the three least luminous sources ($L_{\rm X} \lesssim 1.0\times 10^{-6}L_{\rm Edd}$) is dominated by the jet although for one source it can also be interpreted by the ADAF since the quality of X-ray data is low. We conclude that these results roughly support the predictions of Yuan & Cui (2005) where they predict that when the X-ray luminosity of the system is below a critical value, the X-radiation will not be dominated by the emission from the ADAF any longer, but by the jet. We also investigate the fuel supply in these sources. We find that the accretion rates in four sources among the five in which we can have good constraints to their accretion rates must be higher than the Bondi rates. This implies that other fuel supply, such as the gas released by the stellar population inside the Bondi radius, should be important.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Hadronic Dijet Production

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for dijet production in hadronic collisions in both the collinear QCD factorization approach and the Brodsky-Hwang-Schmidt model. We show that a nonvanishing asymmetry is generated by both initial-state and final-state interactions, and that the final-state interactions dominate. We find that in the leading kinematic region where the transverse momentum imbalance of the two jets, q_\perp = P_{1\perp}+P_{2\perp}, is much less than the momentum of either jet, the contribution from the lowest non-trivial perturbative order to both the spin-averaged and the spin-dependent dijet cross sections can be factorized into a hard part that is a function only of the averaged jet momentum P_\perp = (P_{1\perp}-P_{2\perp})/2, and perturbatively generated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We show that the spin asymmetry at this non-trivial perturbative order can be described by the TMD parton distributions defined in either semi-inclusive DIS or the Drell-Yan process. We derive the same hard parts from both the collinear factorization approach and in the context of the Brodsky-Hwang-Schmidt model, verifying that they are not sensitive to details of the factorized long distance physics.

Effect of Orbital Angular Momentum on Valence-Quark Helicity Distributions

We study the quark helicity distributions at large x in perturbative QCD, taking into account contributions from the valence Fock states of the nucleon which have nonzero orbital angular momentum. These states are necessary to have a nonzero anomalous magnetic moment. We find that the quark orbital angular momentum contributes a large logarithm to the negative helicity quark distributions in addition to its power behavior, scaling as (1-x)^5\log^2(1-x) in the limit of x\to 1. Our analysis shows that the ratio of the polarized over unpolarized down quark distributions, Δd/d, will still approach 1 in this limit. By comparing with the experimental data, we find that this ratio should cross zero at x\approx 0.75.

Asymmetric Di-jet Production in Polarized Hadronic Collisions

Using the collinear QCD factorization approach, we study the single-transverse-spin dependent cross section Delta sigma(S_perp) for the hadronic production of two jets of momenta P_1=P+q/2 and P_2=-P+q/2. We consider the kinematic region where the transverse components of the momentum vectors satisfy P_perp >> q_perp >> Lambda_QCD. For the case of initial-state gluon radiation, we show that at the leading power in q_perp/P_perp and at the lowest non-trivial perturbative order, the dependence of Delta sigma(S_perp) on q_perp decouples from that on P_perp, so that the cross section can be factorized into a hard part that is a function only of the single scale P_perp, and into perturbatively generated transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions with transverse momenta k_perp = O(q_perp).

Black Hole Shadow Image and Visibility Analysis of Sagittarius A*

The compact dark objects with very large masses residing at the centres of galaxies are believed to be black holes. Due to the gravitational lensing effect, they would cast a shadow larger than their horizon size over the background, whose shape and size can be calculated. For the supermassive black hole candidate Sgr A*, this shadow spans an angular size of about 50 micro arc second, which is under the resolution attainable with the current astronomical instruments. Such a shadow image of Sgr A* will be observable at about 1 mm wavelength, considering the scatter broadening by the interstellar medium. By simulating the black hole shadow image of Sgr A* with the radiatively inefficient accretion flow model, we demonstrate that analyzing the properties of the visibility function can help us determine some parameters of the black hole configuration, which is instructive to the sub-millimeter VLBI observations of Sgr A* in the near future.
