Hot One-Temperature Accretion Flows Revisited

The effectiveness of the thermal coupling of ions and electrons in the context of optically thin, hot accretion flows is investigated. In the limit of complete coupling, we focus on the one-temperature accretion flows. Based on a global analysis, the results are compared with two-temperature accretion flow models and with the observations of black hole sources. Many features are quite similar. That is, hot one-temperature solutions are found to exist for mass flow rates less than a critical value; i.e., $\dot{M}\la 10α^2\dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$, where $\dot{M}_{\rm Edd}= L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$ is the Eddington accretion rate. At low mass flow rates, $\dot{M}\la 10^{-3}α^2 \dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$, the solution is in the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) regime. But at higher rates, radiative cooling is effective and is mainly balanced by advective {\em heating}, placing the solution in the regime of luminous hot accretion flow (LHAF). To test the viability of the one-temperature models, we have fitted the spectra of the two black hole sources, Sgr A* and XTE J1118+480, which have been examined successfully with two-temperature models. It is found that the one-temperature models do not provide acceptable fits to the multi-wavelength spectra of Sgr A* nor to XTE J1118+480 as a result of the higher temperatures characteristic of the one-temperature models. It is concluded that the thermal coupling of ions and electrons cannot be fully effective and that a two-temperature description is required in hot accretion flow solutions.

Doping dependence of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors from the antiferromagnetic properties of the Hubbard model

Within the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach, we have studied the antiferromagnetic (AF) properties for the $t$-$t'$-$t''$-$U$ model applied to electron-doped cuprate superconductors. Due to inclusion of spin fluctuations the AF order decreases with doping much faster than obtained in the Hartree-Fock theory. Under an intermediate {\it constant} $U$ the calculated doping evolution of the spectral intensity has satisfactorily reproduced the experimental results, without need of a strongly doping-dependent $U$ as argued earlier. This may reconcile a discrepancy suggested in recent studies on photoemission and optical conductivity.

Transverse Momentum Distribution Through Soft-Gluon Resummation in Effective Field Theory

We study resummation of transverse-momentum-related large logarithms generated from soft-gluon radiations in soft-collinear effective field theory. The anomalous dimensions of the effective quark and gluon currents, an important ingredient for the resummation, are calculated to two-loop order. the result at next-to-leading-log reproduces that obtained using the standard method for deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan process, and Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion. We comment on the extension of the calculation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithms.

Radio--X-ray Correlation and the "Quiescent State" of Black Hole Sources

Recently a correlation between the radio and X-ray luminosities is found, $L_{\rm R}\propto L_{\rm X}^{0.7}$, in black hole sources including black hole candidates in our galaxy and active galactic nuclei. We first show that the correlation can be understood in the context of an accretion-jet model developed for explaining the spectral and timing properties of XTE J1118+480. More importantly, we show that when the X-ray luminosity is below a critical value, $\la (10^{-5}$--$10^{-6}) L_{\rm Edd}$, if the jet persists, the correlation should turn and become steeper, $L_{\rm R}\propto L_{\rm X}^{1.23}$, and the X-ray radiation of the system should be dominated by the emission from the jet, rather than by the accretion flow. Possible observational evidence for our predictions is presented and future observations to further test our predictions are proposed.

Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Gluon Distributions and Semi-inclusive Processes at Hadron Colliders

We study transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions and factorization theorems for the gluon-initiated semi-inclusive processes at hadron colliders. Gauge-invariant TMD gluon distributions are defined, and their relations to the integrated (Feynman) parton distributions are explored when the transverse momentum is large. Through explicit calculations, soft-collinear factorization is verified at one-loop order for scalar particle production. Summation over large double logarithms is made through solving the Collins-Soper equation. We reproduce the known result in the limit that the transverse momentum of the scalar is large.

Thermal conductivity in the doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnet Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Within the t-J model, the heat transport of the doped two-leg ladder material Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ is studied in the doped regime where superconductivity appears under pressure in low temperatures. The energy dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ_{c}(ω)$ shows a low-energy peak, while the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ_{c}(T)$ is characterized by a broad band. In particular, $κ_{c}(T)$ increases monotonously with increasing temperature at low temperatures $T<0.05J$, and is weakly temperature dependent in the temperature range $0.05J 0.1J$, in qualitative agreement with experiments. Our result also shows that although both dressed holons and spinons are responsible for the thermal conductivity, the contribution from the dressed spinons dominates the heat transport of Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$.

Factorization of Large-x Quark Distributions in a Hadron

We present a factorization formula for valence quark distributions in a hadron in x-->1 limit. For the example of pion, we arrive at the form of factorization by analyzing momentum flow in the leading and high-order Feynman diagrams. The result confirms the well-known 1-x scaling rule to all orders in perturbation theory, providing the non-perturbative matrix elements for the infrared-divergence factors. We comment on re-summation of perturbative single and double logarithms in 1-x.

An Accretion-Jet Model for Black Hole Binaries: Interpreting the Spectral and Timing Features of XTE J1118+480

Multi-wavelength observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 have offered abundant spectral and timing information about the source, and have thus provided serious challenges to theoretical models. We propose a coupled accretion-jet model to interpret the observations. We model the accretion flow as an outer standard thin accretion disk truncated at a transition radius by an inner hot accretion flow. The accretion flow accounts for the observed UV and X-ray emission, but it substantially under-predicts the radio and infrared fluxes, even after we allow for nonthermal electrons in the hot flow. We attribute the latter components to a jet. We model the jet emission by means of the internal shock scenario which is widely employed for gamma-ray bursts. In our accretion-jet model of XTE J1118+480, the jet dominates the radio and infrared emission, the thin disk dominates the UV emission, and the hot flow produces most of the X-ray emission. The optical emission has contributions from all three components: jet, thin disk, and hot flow. The model qualitatively accounts for timing features, such as the intriguing positive and negative time lags between the optical and X-ray emission, and the wavelength-dependent variability amplitude.

Study of gossamer superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the t-J-U model

The d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and antiferromagnetism are analytically studied in a renormalized mean field theory for a two dimensional t-J model plus an on-site repulsive Hubbard interaction $U$. The purpose of introducing the $U$ term is to partially impose the no double occupancy constraint by employing the Gutzwiller approximation. The phase diagrams as functions of doping $δ$ and $U$ are studied. Using the standard value of $t/J=3.0$ and in the large $U$ limit, we show that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order emerges and coexists with the dSC in the underdoped region below the doping $δ\sim0.1$. The dSC order parameter increases from zero as the doping increases and reaches a maximum near the optimal doping $δ\sim0.15$. In the small $U$ limit, only the dSC order survives while the AF order disappears. As $U$ increased to a critical value, the AF order shows up and coexists with the dSC in the underdoped regime. At half filing, the system is in the dSC state for small $U$ and becomes an AF insulator for large $U$. Within the present mean field approach, We show that the ground state energy of the coexistent state is always lower than that of the pure dSC state.

Luminous hot accretion flows: the origin of X-ray emission of Seyfert galaxies and black hole binaries

We investigate accretion disc models for the X-ray emission of Seyfert-1 galaxies and the hard state of black-hole X-ray binaries. We concentrate on two hot accretion disc models: advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and recently found luminous hot accretion flow (LHAF). We solve for the global solution of both ADAF and LHAF to obtain the electron temperature, $T_{\rm e}$, and Thompson optical depth, $τ$, at the radius where most of the radiation comes from. We adopt two kinds of electron energy equations. In one, only synchrotron and bremsstrahlung radiation and their Comptonization are considered. The other is parameterized by a constant Compton parameter to model the case in which thermal Comptonization of external soft photon is important. We compare the calculated $T_{\rm e}$ and $τ$ with the observational values obtained by fitting the average spectra of Seyfert-1 galaxies and black-hole binaries using thermal Comptonization model. We find that the most favoured model is an LHAF with parameterized electron energy equation, with ADAFs predicting too high $T_{\rm e}$.

The Nature of X-ray Bright Optically Normal Galaxies

Recent X-ray surveys by {\it Chandra} and {\it XMM-Newton} have revealed a population of X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies (XBONGs) at moderate redshifts. We propose that many XBONGs are powered by an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) plus an outer radiatively efficient thin accretion disk. The absence of optical/UV activity in XBONGs is explained by the truncation of the thin disk near the black hole, while the relatively strong X-ray emission is explained as inverse Compton emission from the hot RIAF. As an example, we show that the spectra of two XBONGs can be fit fairly well with such a model. By comparing these two sources to other accreting black holes, we argue that XBONGs are intermediate in their characteristics between distant luminous active galactic nuclei and nearby low-luminosity nuclei.

QCD Factorization for Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Low Transverse Momentum

We demonstrate a factorization formula for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with hadrons in the current fragmentation region detected at low transverse momentum. To facilitate the factorization, we introduce the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions with gauge links slightly off the light-cone, and with soft-gluon radiations subtracted. We verify the factorization to one-loop order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and argue that it is valid to all orders in perturbation theory.

On The Nature of the Variable Infrared Emission from Sgr A*

Recent infrared (IR) observations of the center of our Galaxy indicate that the supermassive black hole source Sgr A* is strongly variable in the IR. The timescale for the variability, $\sim 30$ min, is comparable to that of the X-ray flares observed by {\em Chandra} and {\em XMM}, suggesting a common physical origin. In this paper, we investigate the nature of the IR emission in the context of models recently proposed to interpret the X-ray flares. We show that the IR emission in Sgr A* can be well explained by nonthermal synchrotron emission if a small fraction of the electrons in the innermost region of the accretion flow around the black hole are accelerated {into a broken power-law distribution}, perhaps due to transient events such as magnetic reconnection. The model predicts differences in the variability amplitudes of flares in the IR and X-rays, in general agreement with observations. It also predicts that the IR emission should be linearly polarized, as has indeed been observed during one epoch. IR and X-ray flares analogous to those observed in Sgr A* may be detectable from other accreting SMBHs, provided $L \lsim 10^{-8} L_{EDD}$; at higher luminosities the flaring emission is dominated by thermal synchrotron-self Compton emission, which is likely to be less variable.

Generalized Parton Distributions at x->1

Generalized parton distributions at large $x$ are studied in perturbative QCD approach. As $x\to 1$ and at finite $t$, there is no $t$ dependence for the GPDs which means that the active quark is at the center of the transverse space. We also obtain the power behavior: $H_q^π(x,ξ,t)\sim (1-x)^2/(1-ξ^2)$ for pion; $H_q(x,ξ,t)\sim (1-x)^3/(1-ξ^2)^2$ and $E_q(x,ξ,t)\sim (1-x)^5/(1-ξ^2)^3f(ξ)$ for nucleon, where $f(ξ)$ represents the additional dependence on $ξ$.

The Beam Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the beam single spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering in at order 1/Q. There are two competing contributions: the leading order transverse momentum dependent parton distribution $h_1^\perp(x,k_\perp)$ convoluted with chiral-odd fragmentation function $\hat e(z)$, and the chiral-odd distribution function $e(x)$ convoluted with Collins fragmentation function $H_1^\perp(z,k'_\perp)$. We estimate this asymmetry and compare with the experimental measurements from CLAS and HERMES collaborations.

Probing Quark Distribution Amplitudes Through Generalized Parton Distributions at Large Momentum Transfer

In the large momentum transfer limit, generalized parton distributions can be calculated through a QCD factorization theorem which involves perturbatively-calculable hard kernels and light-cone parton distribution amplitudes of hadrons. We illustrate this through the $H_q(x,ξ,t)$ distribution for the pion and proton, presenting the hard kernels at leading order. As a result, experimental data on the generalized parton distributions in this regime can be used to determine the functional form of the parton distribution amplitudes which has thus far been quite challenging to obtain. Our result can also be used as a constraint in phenomenological GPD parametrizations.
