Advection-dominated Accretion: From Sgr A* to other Low-luminosity AGNs

This paper reviews our current understanding of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) in the context of the advection-dominated accretion flow. The best investigated source, the supermassive black hole in our galactic center, Sgr A*, is emphasized since the physics of accretion should be the same for various LLAGNs except for their different accretion rates. The important role of jets is discussed, but this is less well established.

Modeling the hard states of XTE J1550--564 during its 2000 outburst

We study hard states of the black-hole binary XTE J1550--564 during its 2000 outburst. In order to explain those states at their highest luminosities, $L\sim 10%$ of the Eddington luminosity, $L_{\rm E}$, we propose a specific hot accretion flow model. We point out that the highest values of the hard-state $L$ are substantially above the $L$ an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) can produce, $\sim 0.4α^2 L_{\rm E}$, which is only $\sim (3$--$4)%L_{\rm E}$ even for $α$ as high as 0.3. On the other hand, we successfully explain the hard states with $L\sim (4$--$10)%$ using the luminous hot accretion flow (LHAF) model. As $10%L_{\rm E}$ is also roughly the highest luminosity an LHAF can produce, such an agreement between the predicted and observed highest luminosities provides by itself strong support for this model. Then, we study multi-waveband spectral variability during the 2000 outburst. In addition to the primary maxima in the optical light curves, secondary maxima were detected after the transition from the very high state to the hard state. We show that the secondary maxima are well modeled by synchrotron emission from a jet formed during the state transition. We argue that the absence of the corresponding secondary peak in the X-ray light curve indicates that the X-ray jet emission, regardless of its radiative process, synchrotron or its Comptonization, is not important in the hard state compared to the emission from the accretion flow.

Accretion Disk Spectra of the Brightest Ultra-luminous X-ray Source in M82

Emission spectra of hot accretion disks characteristic of advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) models are investigated for comparison with the brightest ultra-luminous source, X-1, in the galaxy M82. If the spectral state of the source is similar to the low luminosity hard state of stellar mass black holes in our Galaxy, a fit to the {\it Chandra} X-ray spectrum and constraints from the radio and infrared upper limits, require a black hole mass in the range of $9 \times 10^4 - 5 \times 10^5 \msun$. Lower black hole masses ($\la 10^4 \msun$) are possible if M82 X-1 corresponds to the high luminosity hard state of Galactic black hole X-ray binary sources. Both of these spectrally degenerate hot accretion disk solutions lead to an intermediate mass black hole interpretation for M82 X-1. Since these solutions have different spectral variability with X-ray luminosity and predict different infrared emission, they can be distinguished by future off axis {\it Chandra} observations or simultaneous sensitive infrared detections.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries at Large-x

The large-$x$ behavior of the transverse-momentum dependent quark distributions is analyzed in the factorization-inspired perturbative QCD framework, particularly for the naive time-reversal-odd quark Sivers function which is responsible for the single transverse-spin asymmetries in various semi-inclusive hard processes. By examining the dominant hard gluon exchange Feynman diagrams, and using the resulting power counting rule, we find that the Sivers function has power behavior $(1-x)^4$ at $x \to 1$, which is one power of $(1-x)$ suppressed relative to the unpolarized quark distribution. These power-counting results provide important guidelines for the parameterization of quark distributions and quark-gluon correlations.

Single transverse-spin asymmetry in high transverse momentum pion production in pp collisions

We study the single-spin (left-right) asymmetry in single-inclusive pion production in hadronic scattering. This asymmetry is power-suppressed in the transverse momentum of the produced pion and can be analyzed in terms of twist-three parton correlation functions in the proton. We present new calculations of the corresponding partonic hard-scattering functions that include the so-called "non-derivative" contributions not previously considered in the literature. We find a remarkably simple structure of the results. We also present a brief phenomenological study of the spin asymmetry, taking into account data from fixed-target scattering and also the latest information available from RHIC. We make additional predictions that may be tested experimentally at RHIC.

Resummation of Threshold Logarithms in Effective Field Theory For DIS, Drell-Yan and Higgs Production

We apply the effective field theoretic (EFT) approach to resum the large perturbative logarithms arising when partonic hard scattering cross-sections are taken to the threshold limit. We consider deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan lepton pair production and the standard model Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion via heavy-top loop. We demonstrate the equivalence of the EFT approach with the more conventional, factorization-based methods to all logarithmic accuracies and to all orders in perturbation theory. Specific EFT results are shown for the resummation up to next-to-next-to-next leading logarithmic accuracy for the above mentioned processes. We emphasize the relative simplicity by which we derive most of the results and more importantly their clear physical origin. We find a new relation between the functions $f_{(q,g)}$ in the quark and gluon form factors and the matching coefficients in Drell-Yan and Higgs production, which may explain their universality believed to hold to all orders in perturbation theory.

Accretion models of Sgr A*

The supermassive black hole in the center of our Galaxy, Sgr A*, is unique because the angular size of the black hole is the largest in the sky thus providing detailed boundary conditions on, and much less freedom for, accretion flow models. In this paper I review advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF; another name is radiatively inefficient accretion flow) models for Sgr A*. This includes the developments and dynamics of ADAFs, and how to explain observational results including the multi-waveband spectrum, radio polarization, IR and X-ray flares, and the size measurements at radio wavebands.

Superconductivity in doped two-leg ladder cuprates

Within the t-J ladder model, superconductivity with a modified d-wave symmetry in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is investigated based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the spin-liquid ground-state at the half-filling evolves into the superconducting ground-state upon doping. In analogy to the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in the planar cuprate superconductors, the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprates increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal doping, then decreases in the overdoped regime.

X-ray Spectral Variability of TeV Blazars during Rapid Flares

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars peaks both at keV and TeV energies. The X-ray emission is generally believed to originate in the synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons (and positrons) in the jet of these sources, while the origin of the gamma-ray emission is still being debated. We report results from a systematic study of X-ray spectral variability of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 during individual flares that last for several days, making use of some of the high-quality data that have recently become available. The X-ray spectra of the two sources fall on the opposite sides of the synchrotron peak of their respective SEDs, so they together may offer additional insights into the physical origin of X-ray variability. We modeled each of the time-resolved X-ray spectra over a {\em single} flare by adopting a homogeneous spatial distribution and an instantaneous power-law spectral distribution for the emitting particles. We focused on the variation of four key parameters: particle spectral index, maximum Lorentz factor, energy density, and magnetic field. While there is considerable degeneracy in the fits, we show that, in order to account for the X-ray spectral variability observed in Mrk 421, at least three of the parameters are required to vary in most cases, with the spectral index being one of them. The observations of Mrk 501 support the conclusion, although the quality of the data is not as good. We discuss the implications of the results.

Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We derive the leading contribution to the asymmetry at moderate transverse momentum $P_{h\perp}$ of the produced hadron in terms of twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions, and compare with the approach based on the factorization at fixed transverse momentum involving the asymmetric transverse-momentum and spin-dependent quark distribution. We verify that the two approaches yield identical results in this regime. By a comparison with our earlier calculations for the single-spin asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process we recover the well-established process-dependence of the time-reversal-odd transverse-momentum-dependent quark distributions that generate single-spin phenomena.

Threshold Resummation for Higgs Production in Effective Field Theory

We present an effective field theory to resum the large double logarithms originated from soft-gluon radiations at small final-state hadron invariant masses in Higgs and vector boson (γ^*, $W$ and $Z$) production at hadron colliders. The approach is conceptually simple, indepaendent of details of an effective field theory formulation, and valid to all orders in sub-leading logarithms. As an example, we show the result of summing the next-to-next-to-next leading logarithms is identical to that of standard pQCD factorization method.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Drell-Yan Production at Large and Moderate Transverse Momentum

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We consider production of the lepton pair at large transverse momentum, $q_\perp\sim Q$, where $Q$ is the pair's mass. The spin asymmetry is then of higher twist and may be generated by twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. Expanding the result for $q_\perp\ll Q$, we make contact with the transverse-momentum-dependent QCD factorization involving the so-called Sivers functions. We find that the two mechanisms, quark-gluon correlations on one hand and the Sivers effect on the other, contain the same physics in this region. This ties the two together and imposes an important constraint on phenomenological studies of single transverse spin asymmetries.

Testing RIAF model for Sgr A* using the size measurements

Recent radio observations by the VLBA at 7 and 3.5 mm produced the high-resolution images of the compact radio source located at the center of our Galaxy--Sgr A*, and detected its wavelength-dependent intrinsic sizes at the two wavelengths. This provides us with a good chance of testing previously-proposed theoretical models for Sgr A*. In this {\em Letter}, we calculate the size based on the radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) model proposed by Yuan, Quataert & Narayan (2003). We find that the predicted sizes after taking into account the scattering of the interstellar electrons are consistent with the observations. We further predict an image of Sgr A* at 1.3 mm which can be tested by future observations.

A Unified Picture for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Hard Processes

Using Drell-Yan pair production as an example, we explore the relation between two well-known mechanisms for single transverse-spin asymmetries in hard processes: twist-three quark-gluon correlations when the pair's transverse momentum is large, $q_\perp \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, and time-reversal-odd and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions when $q_\perp$ is much less than the pair's mass. We find that although the two mechanisms have their own domain of validity, they describe the same physics in the kinematic region where they overlap. This unifies the two mechanisms and imposes an important constraint on phenomenological studies of single spin asymmetries.

Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flow in the Nucleus of NGC 1097

We present a model for the accretion flow around the supermassive black hole in the LINER nucleus of NGC 1097 which fits the optical to X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED). The X-ray segment of the SED is based on observations with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which are reported here for the first time. The inner part of the flow is modeled as a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) and the outer part as a standard thin disk. The value of the transition radius (~225 Schwarzschild radii) between the RIAF and outer thin disk was obtained from our previous fitting of the double-peaked Balmer emission line profile, which originates in the thin disk. The black hole mass was inferred from measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion in the host galaxy. When these parameters are used in the accretion flow model, the SED can be successfully reproduced, which shows that the line profile model and the accretion flow model are consistent with each other. A small remaining excess in the near-UV is accounted by the contribution of an obscured starburst located within 9 pc from the nucleus, as we reported in an earlier paper. The radio flux is consistent with synchrotron emission of a relativistic jet modeled by means of the internal shock scenario. In an appendix we also analyze the Chandra X-ray observations of the ~1 kpc circumnuclear star-forming ring and of an ultraluminous compact X-ray source located outside the ring.

Thermal X-Ray Iron Line Emission from the Galactic Center Black Hole Sagittarius A*

We model thermal X-ray emission from the accreting supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the Galactic Center. For the region inside $1.^{\prime\prime}5$ of the center, we use a {generalized} radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) model, and for the region out to $10^{\prime\prime}$ we use published models of the ambient hot gas. We calculate the equivalent widths of Hydrogen-like and Helium-like emission lines of various elements, notably iron. We predict that a strong Helium-like iron line with an equivalent width $\sim1$ keV should be emitted by both the external medium and the RIAF. The equivalent width in the external medium is sensitive to the metallicity $Z$ of the gas as well as the mean temperature. For reasonable choices of these parameters, the calculated results agree with Chandra's detection of an iron line with an equivalent width of 1.3 keV within $10^{\prime\prime}$. The emission from within $1.^{\prime\prime}5$ is not sensitive to the external temperature, but is sensitive to the density and, especially, temperature profile inside the Bondi radius. For the range of profiles we consider, we calculate the equivalent width of the iron line to be $\sim0.6-1.5 (Z/Z_\odot)$ keV, where $Z_\odot$ is the solar metallicity. We present a new Chandra spectrum of the quiescent emission within $1.^{\prime\prime}5$ of Sgr A*. The measured equivalent width of the iron line is 0.7 keV. Although this measurement has a large uncertainty, it is consistent with our predictions, provided the metallicity of the gas is approximately solar.

Nonmonotonic gap in the coexisting antiferromagnetic and superconducting state for electron-doped cuprate superconductors

We argue that the experimentally observed nonmonotonic gap in electron-doped cuprates at optimal doping is the lowest quasiparticle excitation energy in the coexisting antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) state. The idea is implemented by studying the coexistence of AF and SC orders with the t-t'-t''-J model. Although the pairing gap itself is assumed to be the simplest $d$ wave which is monotonic, we have found that the quasiparticle excitation gap in the coexisting state is nonmonotonic, with the maxima around the hot spots where the Fermi surface is missing due to the AF gap. Within the same framework of the coexisting state the spectral function is also calculated at optimal doping. The obtained results are all consistent with experiments.

Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetries: From DIS to Hadronic Collisions

We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon production. These asymmetries are found to be sizable at forward rapidities
