Cosmic microwave background with Brans-Dicke gravity II: constraints with the WMAP and SDSS data

Using the covariant formalism developed in a companion paper (paper I), we derive observational constraint on the Brans-Dicke model in a flat FLRW universe with cosmological constant and cold dark matter. The CMB observations we use include the WMAP five year data, the ACBAR 2007 data, the CBI polarization data, and the BOOMERanG 2003 flight data. For the large scale structure we use the matter power spectrum data measured with the LRG survey of the SDSS DR4. We parameterize the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ with a new parameter $ζ=\ln(1/ω+1)$, and use the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method to explore the parameter space. We find that using CMB data alone, one could place some constraint on positive $ζ$ or $ω$, but negative $ζ$ or $ω$ could not be constrained effectively. However, with additional large scale structure data, one could break the degeneracy at $ζ<0$. The $2σ$ (95.5%) bound on $ζ$ is $-0.00837<ζ<0.01018$ (corresponding to $ω< -120.0$ or $ω> 97.8$). We also obtained constraint on $\dot{G}/G$, the rate of change of $G$ at present, as $-1.75 \times 10^{-12} \yr^{-1}<\dot{G}/G < 1.05 \times 10^{-12}\yr^{-1}$, and $δG/G$, the total variation of $G$ since the epoch of recombination, as $ -0.083 < δ{G}/G < 0.095$ at $2σ$ confidence level.

Forecasting the Dark Energy Measurement with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations: Prospects for the LAMOST surveys

The Large Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) is a dedicated spectroscopic survey telescope being built in China, with an effective aperture of 4 meters and equiped with 4000 fibers. Using the LAMOST telescope, one could make redshift survey of the large scale structure (LSS). The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the LSS power spectrum provide standard rulers for measuring dark energy and other cosmological parameters. In this paper we investigate the meaurement precision achievable for a few possible surveys: (1) a magnitude limited survey of all galaxies, (2) a survey of color selected red luminous galaxies (LRG), and (3) a magnitude limited, high density survey of z<2 quasars. For each survey, we use the halo model to estimate the bias of the sample, and calculate the effective volume. We then use the Fisher matrix method to forecast the error on the dark energy equation of state and other cosmological parameters for different survey parameters. In a few cases we also use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to make the same forecast as a comparison. The fiber time required for each of these surveys is also estimated. These results would be useful in designing the surveys for LAMOST.

A Holographic Dark Energy Model from Ricci Scalar Curvature

Motivated by the holographic principle, it has been suggested that the dark energy density may be inversely proportional to the area of the event horizon of the Universe. However, such a model would have a causality problem. In this paper, we propose to replace the future event horizon area with the inverse of the Ricci scalar curvature. We show that this model does not only avoid the causality problem and is phenomenologically viable, but also naturally solves the coincidence problem of dark energy. Our analysis of the evolution of density perturbations show that the matter power spectra and CMB temperature anisotropy is only slightly affected by such modification.
