Neutrino-driven electrostatic instabilities in a magnetized plasma

The destabilizing role of neutrino beams on the Trivelpiece-Gould modes is considered, assuming electrostatic perturbations in a magnetized plasma composed by electrons in a neutralizing ionic background, coupled to a neutrino species by means of an effective neutrino force arising from the electro-weak interaction. The magnetic field is found to significantly improve the linear instability growth rate, as calculated for Supernova type II environments. On the formal level, for wave vector parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field the instability growth rate is found from the unmagnetized case replacing the plasma frequency by the appropriated Trivelpiece-Gould frequency. The growth rate associated with oblique propagation is also obtained.

Nonlinear ion-acoustic solitons in a magnetized quantum plasma with arbitrary degeneracy of electrons

Nonlinear ion-acoustic waves are analyzed in a non-relativistic magnetized quantum plasma with arbitrary degeneracy of electrons. Quantum statistics is taken into account by means of the equation of state for ideal fermions at arbitrary temperature. Quantum diffraction is described by a modified Bohm potential consistent with finite temperature quantum kinetic theory in the long wavelength limit. The dispersion relation of the obliquely propagating electrostatic waves in magnetized quantum plasma with arbitrary degeneracy of electrons is obtained. Using the reductive perturbation method, the corresponding Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation is derived, describing obliquely propagating two-dimensional ion-acoustic solitons in a magnetized quantum plasma with degenerate electrons having arbitrary electron temperature. It is found that in the dilute plasma case only electrostatic potential hump structures are possible, while in dense quantum plasma in principle both hump and dip soliton structures are obtainable, depending on the electron plasma density and its temperature. The results are validated by comparison with the quantum hydrodynamic model including electron inertia and magnetization effects. Suitable physical parameters for observations are identified.

Modeling of relativistic ion-acoustic waves in ultra-degenerate plasmas

We consider the relativistic ion-acoustic mode in a plasma composed by cold ions and an ultra-degenerate electron gas, described the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system. A critical examination of popular fluid models for relativistic ion-acoustic waves is provided, comparing kinetic and hydrodynamic results. The kinetic linear dispersion relation is shown to be reproduced by the rigorous relativistic hydrodynamic equations with Chandrasekhar's equation of state.

Collisional Effects, Ion-Acoustic Waves and Neutrino Oscillations

We analyze the role of collisional effects on the coupling between ion-acoustic waves and neutrino flavor oscillations, discussing its relevance for plasma instabilities in extreme plasma environments like in type II supernovae, where intense neutrino bursts exist. Electrons (leptons) are coupled to the electron-neutrino fluid through the weak Fermi force, but the electron-neutrinos are allowed to convert to other neutrino flavors and vice-versa. Due to the typically slow frequency of neutrino flavor oscillations, many orders smaller than e.g. the plasma frequency, an effective energy transfer between plasma waves and neutrino flavor oscillations take place at the low-frequency electrostatic branch, viz. the ion-acoustic mode. We show the destabilization of ion-acoustic waves in dense astrophysical scenarios, with a focus on the collisional effects mediated by electron-ion scattering. The maximal instability growth-rate is evaluated and compared to characteristic inverse times of type II supernova explosions. The results can be used for independent experimental verification of the non-zero neutrino mass, in a plasma physics context.

Instabilities and propagation of neutrino magnetohydrodynamic waves in arbitrary direction

In a previous work [16], a new model was introduced, taking into account the role of the Fermi weak force due to neutrinos coupled to magnetohydrodynamic plasmas. The resulting neutrino-magnetohydrodynamics was investigated in a particular geometry associated with the magnetosonic wave, where the ambient magnetic field and the wavevector are perpendicular. The corresponding fast, short wavelength neutrino beam instability was then obtained in the context of supernova parameters. The present communication generalizes these results, allowing for arbitrary direction of wave propagation, including fast and slow magnetohydrodynamic waves and the intermediate cases of oblique angles. The numerical estimates of the neutrino-plasma instabilities are derived in extreme astrophysical environments where dense neutrino beams exist.

Coupling between Ion-Acoustic Waves and Neutrino Oscillations

The work investigates the coupling between ion-acoustic waves and neutrino flavor oscillations in a non-relativistic electron-ion plasma under the influence of a mixed neutrino beam. Neutrino oscillations are mediated by the flavor polarization vector dynamics in a material medium. The linear dispersion relation around homogeneous static equilibria is developed. When resonant with the ion-acoustic mode, the neutrino flavor oscillations can transfer energy to the plasma exciting a new fast unstable mode in extreme astrophysical scenarios. The growth rate and the unstable wavelengths are determined in typical type II supernovae parameters. The predictions can be useful for a new indirect probe on neutrino oscillations in nature.

Li(e)nearity

We demonstrate the fact that linearity is a meaningful symmetry in the sense of Lie and Noether. The role played by that `linearity symmetry' in the quadrature of linear ordinary second-order differential equations is reviewed, by the use of canonical coordinates and the identification of a Wronskian-like conserved quantity as Lie invariant. The Jacobi last multiplier associated with two independent linearity symmetries is applied to derive the Caldirola-Kanai Lagrangian from symmetry principles. Then the symmetry is recognized to be also a Noether one. Finally, the study is extended to higher-order linear ordinary differential equations, derivable or not from an action principle.

Systematic Derivation of Noether Point Symmetries in Special Relativistic Field Theories

A didactic and systematic derivation of Noether point symmetries and conserved currents is put forward in special relativistic field theories, without a priori assumptions about the transformation laws. Given the Lagrangian density, the invariance condition develops as a set of partial differential equations determining the symmetry transformation. The solution is provided in the case of real scalar, complex scalar, free electromagnetic, and charged electromagnetic fields. Besides the usual conservation laws, a less popular symmetry is analyzed: the symmetry associated with the linear superposition of solutions, whenever applicable. The role of gauge invariance is emphasized. The case of the charged scalar particle under external electromagnetic fields is considered, and the accompanying Noether point symmetries determined.

High-harmonic generation in a quantum electron gas trapped in a nonparabolic and anisotropic well

An effective self-consistent model is derived and used to study the dynamics of an electron gas confined in a nonparabolic and anisotropic quantum well. This approach is based on the equations of quantum hydrodynamics, which incorporate quantum and nonlinear effects in an approximate fashion. The effective model consists of a set of six coupled differential equations (dynamical system) for the electric dipole and the size of the electron gas. Using this model we show that: (i) High harmonic generation is related to the appearance of chaos in the phase space, as attested by related Poincaré sections; (ii) Higher order harmonics can be excited efficiently and with relatively weak driving fields by making use of chirped electromagnetic waves.

Ion-acoustic cnoidal waves in a quantum plasma

Nonlinear ion-acoustic cnoidal wave structures are studied in an unmagnetized quantum plasma. Using the reductive perturbation method, a Korteweg-de Vries equation is derived for appropriate boundary conditions and nonlinear periodic wave solutions are obtained. The corresponding analytical solution and numerical plots of the ion-acoustic cnoidal waves and solitons in the phase plane are presented using the Sagdeev pseudo-potential approach. The variations in the nonlinear potential of the ion-acoustic cnoidal waves are studied at different values of quantum parameter $H_{e}$ which is the ratio of electron plasmon energy to electron Fermi energy defined for degenerate electrons. It is found that both compressive and rarefactive ion-acoustic cnoidal wave structures are formed depending on the value of the quantum parameter. The dependence of the wavelength and frequency on nonlinear wave amplitude is also presented.

Linear and nonlinear ion-acoustic waves in non-relativistic quantum plasmas with arbitrary degeneracy

Linear and nonlinear ion-acoustic waves are studied in a fluid model for non-relativistic, unmagnetized quantum plasma with electrons with an arbitrary degeneracy degree. The equation of state for electrons follows from a local Fermi-Dirac distribution function and apply equally well both to fully degenerate or classical, non-degenerate limits. Ions are assumed to be cold. Quantum diffraction effects through the Bohm potential are also taken into account. A general coupling parameter valid for dilute and dense plasmas is proposed. The linear dispersion relation of the ion-acoustic waves is obtained and the ion-acoustic speed is discussed for the limiting cases of extremely dense or dilute systems. In the long wavelength limit the results agree with quantum kinetic theory. Using the reductive perturbation method, the appropriate Korteweg-de Vries equation for weakly nonlinear solutions is obtained and the corresponding soliton propagation is analyzed. It is found that soliton hump and dip structures are formed depending on the value of the quantum parameter for the degenerate electrons, which affect the phase velocities in the dispersive medium.

Influence of flavor oscillations on neutrino beam instabilities

We consider the collective neutrino plasma interactions, and study the electron plasma instabilities produced by a nearly mono-energetic neutrino beam in a plasma. We describe the mutual influence of neutrino flavor oscillations and electron plasma waves. We show that the neutrino flavor oscillations are not only perturbed by electron plasmas waves, but also contribute to the dispersion relation and the growth rates of neutrino beam instabilities.

Neutrino oscillations in a turbulent plasma

A new model for the joint neutrino flavor and plasma oscillations is introduced, in terms of the dynamics of the neutrino flavor polarization vector in a plasma background. Fundamental solutions are found for both time-invariant and time-dependent media, considering slow and fast variations of the electron plasma density. The model is shown to be described by a generalized Hamiltonian formalism. In the case of a broad spectrum of electron plasma waves, a statistical approach indicate the shift of both equilibrium value and frequency oscillation of flavor coherence, due to the existence of a turbulent plasma background.

Wave dispersion derived from the square-root Klein-Gordon-Poisson system

Recently there has been great interest around quantum relativistic models for plasmas. In particular striking advances have been obtained by means of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system, which provides a first order approach to the relativistic regimes of quantum plasmas. It is a reliable method as long as the plasma spin dynamics is not a fundamental aspect, to be addressed using more refined (and heavier) models involving the Pauli-Schrödinger or Dirac equations. In this work a further simplification is considered, tracing back to the early days of relativistic quantum theory. Namely, we revisit the square-root Klein-Gordon-Poisson system, where the positive branch of the relativistic energy-momentum relation is mapped to a quantum wave equation. The associated linear wave propagation is analyzed and compared to the results in the literature. We determine physical parameters where the simultaneous quantum and relativistic effects can be noticeable in weakly coupled electrostatic plasmas.

Exact solution to neutrino-plasma two-flavor dynamics

It is shown that the two-flavor neutrino oscillation equations admit an exact analytic solution for arbitrarily chosen normalized electron neutrino population, provided the electron plasma density is adjusted in a certain way. The associated formula for the electron plasma density is applied to the cases of exponentially decaying or oscillating electron neutrino populations.

Variational approach to the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations

Using a variational approach based on a Lagrangian formulation and Gaussian trial functions, we derive a simple dynamical system that captures the main features of the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations. With little analytical or numerical effort, the model furnishes information on the ground state density and energy eigenvalue, the linear frequencies, as well as the nonlinear long-time behaviour. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained through analytical estimates or numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger-Newton equations.

Fully Non-Dimensional Nusselt Number Correlation for Transient Natural Convection in Tanks

A fully non-dimensional correlation for the Nusselt number associated to cooling processes in vertical storage tanks under laminar natural convection is presented. The derived correlation depends on the average temperature and can be used for the improvement of temperature profiles found from global methods. A Finite Volume method is employed using a transient bi-dimensional model in cylindrical coordinates and is experimentally validated. Forty cases of cooling with four aspect ratios, five overall heat transfer coefficients and two different volumes are considered. Thermal losses for the environment in all tank walls (top, bottom and sidewalls) are allowable. The Buckingham theorem is applied to determine the non-dimensional groups in the cooling of thermal reservoirs and the corresponding correlations, in agreement with the numerical results.

Nonlinear dynamics of electron-positron clusters

Electron-positron clusters are studied using a quantum hydrodynamic model that includes Coulomb and exchange interactions. A variational Lagrangian method is used to determine their stationary and dynamical properties. The cluster static features are validated against existing Hartree-Fock calculations. In the linear response regime, we investigate both dipole and monopole (breathing) modes. The dipole mode is reminiscent of the surface plasmon mode usually observed in metal clusters. The nonlinear regime is explored by means of numerical simulations. We show that, by exciting the cluster with a chirped laser pulse with slowly varying frequency (autoresonance), it is possible to efficiently separate the electron and positron populations on a timescale of a few tens of femtoseconds.
