On the relevance of quantum models for plasmas

Recently there has been a claim on the complete irrelevance of quantum modeling for plasmas. We address this subject from basic principles. Physical situations where quantum effects play a decisive role are identified.

An introduction to quantum plasmas

Shielding effects in non-degenerate and degenerate plasmas are compared. A detailed derivation of the Wigner-Poisson system is provided for electrostatic quantum plasmas where relativistic, spin and collisional effects are not essential. Later a detailed derivation of a quantum hydrodynamic model starting from the Wigner-Poisson system is shown. The route for this derivation considers the eikonal decomposition of the one-body wavefunctions of the quantum statistical mixture. The merits and limitations of the resulting quantum hydrodynamic model are discussed.

The damped Pinney equation and its applications to dissipative quantum mechanics

The work considers the damped Pinney equation, defined as the model arising when a linear in velocity damping term is included in the Pinney equation. In the general case the resulting equation does not admit Lie point symmetries or is reducible to a simpler form by any obvious coordinate transformation. In this context the method of Kuzmak-Luke is applied to derive a perturbation solution, for weak damping and slow time-dependence of the frequency function. The perturbative and numerical solutions are shown to be in good agreement. The results are applied to examine the time-evolution of Gaussian shaped wave-functions in the Kostin formulation of dissipative quantum mechanics.

Soliton solutions of 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation by a potential control method

We present a class of three-dimensional solitary waves solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). By imposing an external controlling potential, a desired time-dependent shape of the localized BEC excitation is obtained. The stability of some obtained localized solutions is checked by solving the time-dependent GP equation numerically with analytic solutions as initial conditions. The analytic solutions can be used to design external potentials to control the localized BECs in experiment.

Quantum and classical dynamics of Langmuir wave packets

The quantum Zakharov system in three-spatial dimensions and an associated Lagrangian description, as well as its basic conservation laws are derived. In the adiabatic and semiclassical case, the quantum Zakharov system reduces to a quantum modified vector nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation for the envelope electric field. The Lagrangian structure for the resulting vector NLS equation is used to investigate the time-dependence of the Gaussian shaped localized solutions, via the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. The formal classical limit is considered in detail. The quantum corrections are shown to prevent the collapse of localized Langmuir envelope fields, in both two and three-spatial dimensions. Moreover, the quantum terms can produce an oscillatory behavior of the width of the approximate Gaussian solutions. The variational method is shown to preserve the essential conservation laws of the quantum modified vector NLS equation.

Macroscopic description for a quantum plasma micro-instability: the quantum Weibel solution

The Weibel instability in the quantum plasma case is treated by means of a fluid-like (moments) approach. Quantum modifications to the macroscopic equations are then identified as effects of first or second kind. Quantum effects of the first kind correspond to a dispersive term, similar to the Bohm potential in the quantum hydrodynamic equations for plasmas. Effects of the second kind are due to the Fermi statistics of the charge carriers and can become the dominant influence for strong degeneracy. The macroscopic dispersion relations are of higher order than those for the classical Weibel instability. This corresponds to the presence of a cutoff wave-number even for the strong temperature anisotropy case.

Quantum Weibel Instability

The Weibel instability is analyzed for quantum plasmas described by the Wigner-Maxwell model. For a suitable class of electromagnetic potentials, the Wigner-Maxwell system is linearized yielding a general dispersion relation for transverse electromagnetic waves. For a double Gaussian equilibrium with temperature anisotropy, the derived dispersion relation generalizes the classical Weibel instability equation. More detailed analytical results are obtained for the cases of extreme temperature anisotropy and for a three-dimensional water bag distribution. In all cases, quantum effects tends to weaken or suppress the instability. Applications are discussed for dense astrophysical objects like white dwarfs and neutron stars as well as for tunnel-ionized plasmas with controllable perpendicular plasma temperature.

Quantum Magnetohydrodynamics

The quantum hydrodynamic model for charged particle systems is extended to the cases of non zero magnetic fields. In this way, quantum corrections to magnetohydrodynamics are obtained starting from the quantum hydrodynamical model with magnetic fields. The quantum magnetohydrodynamics model is analyzed in the infinite conductivity limit. The conditions for equilibrium in ideal quantum magnetohydrodynamics are established. Translationally invariant exact equilibrium solutions are obtained in the case of the ideal quantum magnetohydrodynamic model.

Low Momentum Classical Mechanics with Effective Quantum Potentials

A recently introduced effective quantum potential theory is studied in a low momentum region of phase space. This low momentum approximation is used to show that the new effective quantum potential induces a space-dependent mass and a smoothed potential both of them constructed from the classical potential. The exact solution of the approximated theory in one spatial dimension is found. The concept of effective transmission and reflection coefficients for effective quantum potentials is proposed and discussed in comparison with an analogous quantum statistical mixture problem. The results are applied to the case of a square barrier.
