Locally recoverable $J$-affine variety codes

A locally recoverable (LRC) code is a code over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that any erased coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from a small number of other coordinates in that codeword. We construct LRC codes correcting more than one erasure, which are subfield-subcodes of some $J$-affine variety codes. For these LRC codes, we compute localities $(r, δ)$ that determine the minimum size of a set $\bar{R}$ of positions so that any $δ- 1$ erasures in $\bar{R}$ can be recovered from the remaining $r$ coordinates in this set. We also show that some of these LRC codes with lengths $n\gg q$ are $(δ-1)$-optimal.

Quantum codes from a new construction of self-orthogonal algebraic geometry codes

We present new quantum codes with good parameters which are constructed from self-orthogonal algebraic geometry codes. Our method permits a wide class of curves to be used in the formation of these codes, which greatly extends the class of a previous paper due to Munuera, Tenório and Torres. These results demonstrate that there is a lot more scope for constructing self-orthogonal AG codes than was previously known.

Asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes and BCH codes

The concept of asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting code (asymmetric EAQECC) is introduced in this article. Codes of this type take advantage of the asymmetry in quantum errors since phase-shift errors are more probable than qudit-flip errors. Moreover, they use pre-shared entanglement between encoder and decoder to simplify the theory of quantum error correction and increase the communication capacity. Thus, asymmetric EAQECCs can be constructed from any pair of classical linear codes over an arbitrary field. Their parameters are described and a Gilbert-Varshamov bound is presented. Explicit parameters of asymmetric EAQECCs from BCH codes are computed and examples exceeding the introduced Gilbert-Varshamov bound are shown.

Parallel Implementations for Computing the Minimum Distance of a Random Linear Code on Multicomputers

The minimum distance of a linear code is a key concept in information theory. Therefore, the time required by its computation is very important to many problems in this area. In this paper, we introduce a family of implementations of the Brouwer-Zimmermann algorithm for distributed-memory architectures for computing the minimum distance of a random linear code over F2. Both current commercial and public-domain software only work on either unicore architectures or shared-memory architectures, which are limited in the number of cores/processors employed in the computation. Our implementations focus on distributed-memory architectures, thus being able to employ hundreds or even thousands of cores in the computation of the minimum distance. Our experimental results show that our implementations are much faster, even up to several orders of magnitude, than current implementations widely used nowadays.

Quasi-Cyclic Constructions of Quantum Codes

We give sufficient conditions for self-orthogonality with respect to symplectic, Euclidean and Hermitian inner products of a wide family of quasi-cyclic codes of index two. We provide lower bounds for the symplectic weight and the minimum distance of the involved codes. Supported in the previous results, we show algebraic constructions of good quantum codes and determine their parameters.

Classical and Quantum Evaluation Codes at the Trace Roots

We introduce a new class of evaluation linear codes by evaluating polynomials at the roots of a suitable trace function. We give conditions for self-orthogonality of these codes and their subfield-subcodes with respect to the Hermitian inner product. They allow us to construct stabilizer quantum codes over several finite fields which substantially improve the codes in the literature and that are records at [http://www.codetables.de] for the binary case. Moreover, we obtain several classical linear codes over the field $\mathbb{F}_4$ which are records at [http://www.codetables.de].

New binary and ternary LCD codes

LCD codes are linear codes with important cryptographic applications. Recently, a method has been presented to transform any linear code into an LCD code with the same parameters when it is supported on a finite field with cardinality larger than 3. Hence, the study of LCD codes is mainly open for binary and ternary fields. Subfield-subcodes of $J$-affine variety codes are a generalization of BCH codes which have been successfully used for constructing good quantum codes. We describe binary and ternary LCD codes constructed as subfield-subcodes of $J$-affine variety codes and provide some new and good LCD codes coming from this construction.

Improved constructions of nested code pairs

Two new constructions of linear code pairs $C_2 \subset C_1$ are given for which the codimension and the relative minimum distances $M_1(C_1,C_2)$, $M_1(C_2^\perp,C_1^\perp)$ are good. By this we mean that for any two out of the three parameters the third parameter of the constructed code pair is large. Such pairs of nested codes are indispensable for the determination of good linear ramp secret sharing schemes [35]. They can also be used to ensure reliable communication over asymmetric quantum channels [47]. The new constructions result from carefully applying the Feng-Rao bounds [18,27] to a family of codes defined from multivariate polynomials and Cartesian product point sets.

Fast Algorithms for the Computation of the Minimum Distance of a Random Linear Code

The minimum distance of a code is an important concept in information theory. Hence, computing the minimum distance of a code with a minimum computational cost is a crucial process to many problems in this area. In this paper, we present and evaluate a family of algorithms and implementations to compute the minimum distance of a random linear code over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ that are faster than different current implementations. In addition to the basic sequential implementations, we present parallel and vectorized implementations that render high performances on modern architectures. The attained performance results show the benefits of the developed optimized algorithms, which obtain remarkable performance improvements compared with state-of-the-art implementations widely used nowadays.

On the distance of stabilizer quantum codes from $J$-affine variety codes

Self-orthogonal $J$-affine variety codes have been successfully used to obtain quantum stabilizer codes with excellent parameters. In a previous paper we gave formulae for the dimension of this family of quantum codes, but no bound for the minimum distance was given. In this work, we show how to derive quantum stabilizer codes with designed minimum distance from $J$-affine variety codes and their subfield-subcodes. Moreover, this allows us to obtain new quantum codes, some of them either, with better parameters, or with larger distances than the previously known codes.

New Quantum Codes from Evaluation and Matrix-Product Codes

Stabilizer codes obtained via CSS code construction and Steane's enlargement of subfield-subcodes and matrix-product codes coming from generalized Reed-Muller, hyperbolic and affine variety codes are studied. Stabilizer codes with good quantum parameters are supplied, in particular, some binary codes of lengths 127 and 128 improve the parameters of the codes in http://www.codetables.de. Moreover, non-binary codes are presented either with parameters better than or equal to the quantum codes obtained from BCH codes by La Guardia or with lengths that can not be reached by them.

Stabilizer quantum codes from $J$-affine variety codes and a new Steane-like enlargement

New stabilizer codes with parameters better than the ones available in the literature are provided in this work, in particular quantum codes with parameters $[[127,63, \geq 12]]_2$ and $[[63,45, \geq 6]]_4$ that are records. These codes are constructed with a new generalization of the Steane's enlargement procedure and by considering orthogonal subfield-subcodes --with respect to the Euclidean and Hermitian inner product-- of a new family of linear codes, the $J$-affine variety codes.

Quantum codes from affine variety codes and their subfield-subcodes

We use affine variety codes and their subfield-subcodes for obtaining quantum stabilizer codes via the CSS code construction. With this procedure, we get codes with good parameters and a code whose parameters exceed the CSS quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound given by Feng and Ma.

List decoding of repeated codes

Assuming that we have a soft-decision list decoding algorithm of a linear code, a new hard-decision list decoding algorithm of its repeated code is proposed in this article. Although repeated codes are not used for encoding data, due to their parameters, we show that they have a good performance with this algorithm. We compare, by computer simulations, our algorithm for the repeated code of a Reed-Solomon code against a decoding algorithm of a Reed-Solomon code. Finally, we estimate the decoding capability of the algorithm for Reed-Solomon codes and show that performance is somewhat better than our estimates.

Decoding of Matrix-Product Codes

We propose a decoding algorithm for the $(u\mid u+v)$-construction that decodes up to half of the minimum distance of the linear code. We extend this algorithm for a class of matrix-product codes in two different ways. In some cases, one can decode beyond the error correction capability of the code.

The Dimension of Subcode-Subfields of Shortened Generalized Reed Solomon Codes

Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are among the most ubiquitous codes due to their good parameters as well as efficient encoding and decoding procedures. However, RS codes suffer from having a fixed length. In many applications where the length is static, the appropriate length can be obtained by an RS code by shortening or puncturing. Generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes are a generalization of RS codes, whose subfield-subcodes are extensively studied. In this paper we show that a particular class of GRS codes produces many subfield-subcodes with large dimension. An algorithm for searching through the codes is presented as well as a list of new codes obtained from this method.

Proof of a Conjecture of Segre and Bartocci on Monomial Hyperovals in Projective Planes

The existence of certain monomial hyperovals $D(x^k)$ in the finite Desarguesian projective plane $PG(2,q)$, $q$ even, is related to the existence of points on certain projective plane curves $g_k(x,y,z)$. Segre showed that some values of $k$ ($k=6$ and $2^i$) give rise to hyperovals in $PG(2,q)$ for infinitely many $q$. Segre and Bartocci conjectured that these are the only values of $k$ with this property. We prove this conjecture through the absolute irreducibility of the curves $g_k$.
