Exploring complete positivity in hierarchy equations of motion

We derive a purely algebraic framework for the identification of hierarchy equations of motion that induce completely positive dynamics and demonstrate the applicability of our approach with several examples. We find bounds on the violation of complete positivity for microscopically derived hierarchy equations of motion and construct well-behaved phenomenological models with strongly non-Markovian revivals of quantum coherence.

Isotropy and control of dissipative quantum dynamics

We investigate the problem of what evolutions an open quantum system described by a time-local Master equation can undergo with universal coherent controls. A series of conditions are given which exclude channels from being reachable by any unitary controls, assuming that the coupling to the environment is not being modified. These conditions primarily arise by defining decay rates for the generator of the dynamics of the open system, and then showing that controlling the system can only make these rates more isotropic. This forms a series of constraints on the shape and non-unitality of allowed evolutions, as well as an expression for the time required to reach a given goal. We give numerical examples of the usefulness of these criteria, and explore some similarities they have with quantum thermodynamics.

Quasi-periodically driven quantum systems

Floquet theory provides rigorous foundations for the theory of periodically driven quantum systems. In the case of non-periodic driving, however, the situation is not so well understood. Here, we provide a critical review of the theoretical framework developed for quasi-periodically driven quantum systems. Although the theoretical footing is still under development, we argue that quasi-periodically driven quantum systems can be treated with generalizations of Floquet theory in suitable parameter regimes. Moreover, we provide a generalization of the Floquet-Magnus expansion and argue that quasi-periodic driving offers a promising route for quantum simulations.

Spatiotemporal coherence of non-equilibrium multimode photon condensates

We report on the observation of quantum coherence of Bose-Einstein condensed photons in an optically-pumped, dye-filled microcavity. We find that coherence is long-range in space and time above condensation threshold, but short-range below threshold, compatible with thermal-equilibrium theory. Far above threshold, the condensate is no longer at thermal equilibrium and is fragmented over non-degenerate, spatially overlapping modes. A microscopic theory including cavity loss, molecular structure and relaxation shows that this multimode condensation is similar to multimode lasing induced by imperfect gain clamping.

Contrast in Multipath Interference and Quantum Coherence

We develop a rigorous connection between statistical properties of an interference pattern and the coherence properties of the underlying quantum state. With explicit examples, we demonstrate that even for inaccurate reconstructions of interference patterns properly defined statistical moments permit a reliable characterization of quantum coherence.

Robust control of long distance entanglement in disordered spin chains

We derive temporally shaped control pulses for the creation of long-distance entanglement in disordered spin chains. Our approach is based on a time-dependent target functional and a time-local control strategy that permits to ensure that the description of the chain in terms of matrix product states is always valid. With this approach, we demonstrate that long-distance entanglement can be created even for substantially disordered interaction landscapes.

Quantum simulations of dissipative dynamics: time-dependence instead of size

The simulation of quantum systems has been a key aim of quantum technologies for decades, and the generalisation to open systems is necessary to include physically realistic systems. We introduce an approach for quantum simulations of open system dynamics in terms of an environment of minimal size and a time-dependent Hamiltonian. This enables the implementation of a continuous-time simulation with a finite environment, whereas state of the art methods require an infinite environment or only match the simulation at discrete times. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for this Hamiltonian to be well behaved and, when these are not met, we show that there exists an approximate Hamiltonian that is, and look into its applications.

Structure-dynamics relation in shaken optical lattices

Shaken optical lattices permit to coherently modify the tunneling of particles in a controllable manner. We introduce a general relation between the geometry of shaken lattices and their admissible effective dynamics. Using three different examples, we illustrate the symmetries of the emerging tunneling rates. The results provide a clear framework to understand the relation between lattice geometry and accessible dynamics, and a tool to straightforwardly derive truncated effective Hamiltonians on arbitrary geometries.

Tunable Chern insulator with shaken optical lattices

Driven optical lattices permit the engineering of effective dynamics with well-controllable tunneling properties. We describe the realization of a tunable a Chern insulator by driving particles on a shaken hexagonal lattice with optimally designed polychromatic driving forces. Its implementation does not require shallow lattices, which favors the study of strongly-correlated phases with non-trivial topology.

Observation of detection-dependent multi-photon coherence times

The coherence time constitutes one of the most critical parameters that determines whether or not interference is observed in an experiment. For photons, it is traditionally determined by the effective spectral bandwidth of the photon. Here we report on multi-photon interference experiments in which the multi-photon coherence time, defined by the width of the interference signal, depends on the number of interfering photons and on the measurement scheme chosen to detect the particles. A theoretical analysis reveals that all multi-photon interference with more than two particles features this dependence, which can be attributed to higher-order effects in the mutual indistinguishability of the particles. As a striking consequence, a single, well-defined many-particle quantum state can exhibit qualitatively different degrees of interference, depending on the chosen observable. Therefore, optimal sensitivity in many-particle quantum interferometry can only be achieved by choosing a suitable detection scheme.

Smooth optimal quantum control for robust solid state spin magnetometry

Nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond show great potential as magnetic, electric and thermal sensors which are naturally packaged in a bio-compatible material. In particular, NV-based magnetometers combine small sensor volumes with high sensitivities under ambient conditions. The practical operation of such sensors, however, requires advanced quantum control techniques that are robust with respect to experimental and material imperfections, control errors, and noise. Here, we present a novel approach that uses Floquet theory to efficiently generate smooth and simple quantum control pulses with tailored robustness properties. We verify their performance by applying them to a single NV center and by characterising the resulting quantum gate using quantum process tomography. We show how the sensitivity of NV-ensemble magnetometry schemes can be improved by up to two orders of magnitude by compensating for inhomogeneities in both the control field and the spin transition frequency. Our approach is ideally suited for a wide variety of quantum technologies requiring high-fidelity, robust control under tight bandwidth requirements, such as spin-ensemble based memories involving high-Q cavities.

Hierarchies of multipartite entanglement for continuous-variable states

We derive a hierarchy of separability criteria for multi-mode continuous variable systems. They permit to study in a unified way the k-partite entanglement of broad classes of Gaussian and non- Gaussian states. With specific examples we demonstrate the strength of the criteria, and, we discuss their assessment based on data obtained from Gaussian measurements.

Completely positive approximate solutions of driven open quantum systems

We define a perturbative approximation for the solution of Lindblad master equations with time-dependent generators that satisfies the fundamental property of complete positivity, as essential for quantum simulations and optimal control. With explicit examples we show that ensuring this property substantially improves the accuracy of the perturbative approximation.

Comment on "Non-monotonic projection probabilities as a function of distinguishability"

A recent work (2014 New J. Phys. 16 013006) claims that nonmonotonic structures found in the many-particle quantum-to-classical transition (2013 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 110 1227-1231; 2011 Phys. Rev. A 83 062111) are not exclusive to the many-body domain, but they also appear for single-photon as well as for semi-classical systems. We show that these situations, however, do not incorporate any quantum-to-classical transition, which makes the claims unsustainable.

A quantitative theory of coherent delocalization

We define a quantitative measure of coherent delocalization; similarly to the concept of entanglement measures, we require that a measure of coherent delocalization may never increase under processes that do not create coherent superpositions. After a complete characterization of such processes, we prove that a set of recently introduced functions that characterize coherent delocalization never grow under such processes and thus are indeed valid measures.

Optimal, robust geometries for coherent excitation transport

Coherent transport promises to be the basis for an emerging new technology. Notwithstanding, a mechanistic understanding of the fundamental principles behind optimal scattering media is still missing. Here, complex network analysis is applied for the characterization of geometries that result in optimal coherent transport. The approach is tailored towards the elucidation of the subtle relationship between transport and geometry. Investigating systems with a different number of elementary units allows us to identify classes of structures which are common to all system sizes and which possess distinct robustness features. In particular, we find that small groups of two or three sites closely packed together that do not carry excitation at any time are fundamental to realize efficient and robust excitation transport. Features identified in small systems recur also in larger systems, what suggests that such strategy can efficiently be used to construct close-to-optimal transport properties irrespective of the system size.
