Accurate effective Hamiltonians via unitary flow in Floquet space

We present a systematic construction of effective Hamiltonians of periodically driven quantum systems. Because of an equivalence between the time dependence of a Hamiltonian and an interaction in its Floquet operator, flow equations, that permit to decouple interacting quantum systems, allow us to identify time-independent Hamiltonians for driven systems. With this approach, we explain the experimentally observed deviation of expected suppression of tunneling in ultracold atoms.

Smooth optimal control with Floquet theory

This paper describes an approach to construct temporally shaped control pulses that drive a quantum system towards desired properties. A parametrization in terms of periodic functions with pre-defined frequencies permits to realize a smooth, typically simple shape of the pulses; their optimization can be performed based on a variational analysis with Floquet theory. As we show with selected specific examples, this approach permits to control the dynamics of interacting spins, such that gate operations and entanglement dynamics can be implemented with very high accuracy.

Pump-Controlled Directional Light Emission from Random Lasers

The angular emission pattern of a random laser is typically very irregular and difficult to tune. Here we show by detailed numerical calculations that one can overcome the lack of control over this emission pattern by actively shaping the spatial pump distribution. We demonstrate, in particular, how to obtain customized pump profiles to achieve highly directional emission. Going beyond the regime of strongly scattering media where localized modes with a given directionality can simply be selected by the pump, we present an optimization-based approach which shapes extended lasing modes in the weakly scattering regime according to any predetermined emission pattern.

Structure-dynamics relationship in coherent transport through disordered systems

Quantum transport is strongly influenced by interference with phase relations that depend sensitively on the scattering medium. Since even small changes in the geometry of the medium can turn constructive interference to destructive, a clear relation between structure and fast, efficient transport is difficult to identify. Here we present a complex network analysis of quantum transport through disordered systems to elucidate the relationship between transport efficiency and structural organization. Evidence is provided for the emergence of structural classes with different geometries but similar high efficiency. Specifically, a structural motif characterised by pair sites which are not actively participating to the dynamics renders transport properties robust against perturbations. Our results pave the way for a systematic rationalization of the design principles behind highly efficient transport which is of paramount importance for technological applications as well as to address transport robustness in natural light harvesting complexes.

Stationary quantum coherence and transport in disordered networks

We examine the excitation transport across quantum networks that are continuously driven by a constant and incoherent light source. In particular we investigate the coherence properties of incoherently driven networks by employing recent tools from entanglement theory that enable a rigorous interpretation of coherence in the site basis. With these tools at hand we identify coherent delocalization of excitations over several sites to be a crucial prerequisite for highly efficient transport across networks driven by an incoherent source. These results are set into context with the latest discussion of the occurrence and role of coherence in light-harvesting complexes that are exposed to natural incoherent sun light.

Limits to multipartite entanglement generation with bosons and fermions

Many-photon interference in linear-optics setups can be exploited to generate and detect multipartite entanglement. Without recurring to any inter-particle interaction, many entangled states have been created experimentally, and a panoply of theoretical schemes for the generation of various classes of entangled states is available. Here, we present a unifying framework that accommodates the present experiments and theoretical protocols for the creation of multiparticle entanglement via interference. A general representation of the states that can be created is provided for bosons and fermions, for any particle number, and for any dimensionality of the entangled degree of freedom. Using the framework, we derive an upper bound on the generalized Schmidt number of the states that can be generated, and we establish bounds on the dimensionality of the manifold of these states. We show that - at the expense of a smaller success probability - more states can be created with bosons than with fermions, and give an intuitive interpretation of the state representation and of the established bounds in terms of superimposed many-particle paths.

Many-body entanglement: Permutations and equivalence classes

With an easily applicable criterion based on permutation symmetries of (identically prepared) replicas of quantum states we identify distinct entanglement classes in high-dimensional multi- partite systems. The different symmetry properties of inequivalent states provide a rather intuitive picture of the otherwise very abstract classification of many-body entangled states.

Entanglement resonances of driven multi-partite quantum systems

We show how to create maximally entangled dressed states of a weakly interacting multi-partite quantum system by suitably tuning an external, periodic driving field. Floquet theory allows us to relate, in a transparent manner, the occurrence of entanglement resonances to avoided crossings in the spectrum of quasi-energies, tantamount of well-defined conditions for the controlled, resonant interaction of particles. We demonstrate the universality of the phenomenon for periodically driven, weakly interacting two-level systems, by considering different interaction mechanisms and driving profiles. In particular, we show that entanglement resonances are a generic feature of driven, multi-partite systems, widely independent of the details of the interaction mechanism. Our results are therefore particularly relevant for experiments on interacting two-level systems, in which the microscopic realization of the inter-particle coupling is unknown.

Many-particle interference beyond many-boson and many-fermion statistics

Identical particles exhibit correlations even in the absence of inter-particle interaction, due to the exchange (anti)symmetry of the many-particle wavefunction. Two fermions obey the Pauli principle and anti-bunch, whereas two bosons favor bunched, doubly occupied states. Here, we show that the collective interference of three or more particles leads to a much more diverse behavior than expected from the boson-fermion dichotomy known from quantum statistical mechanics. The emerging complexity of many-particle interference is tamed by a simple law for the strict suppression of events in the Bell multiport beam splitter. The law shows that counting events are governed by widely species-independent interference, such that bosons and fermions can even exhibit identical interference signatures, while their statistical character remains subordinate. Recent progress in the preparation of tailored many-particle states of bosonic and fermionic atoms promises experimental verification and applications in novel many-particle interferometers.

Quantum statistical synchronization of non-interacting particles

A full treatment for the scattering of an arbitrary number of bosons through a Bell multiport beam splitter is presented that includes all possible output arrangements. Due to exchange symmetry, the event statistics differs dramatically from the classical case in which the realization probabilities are given by combinatorics. A law for the suppression of output configurations is derived and shown to apply for the majority of all possible arrangements. Such multiparticle interference effects dominate at the level of single transition amplitudes, while a generic bosonic signature can be observed when the average number of occupied ports or the typical number of particles per port is considered. The results allow to classify in a common approach several recent experiments and theoretical studies and disclose many accessible quantum statistical effects involving many particles.

Entanglement of Identical Particles and the Detection Process

We introduce detector-level entanglement, a unified entanglement concept for identical particles that takes into account the possible deletion of many-particle which-way information through the detection process. The concept implies a measure for the effective indistinguishability of the particles, which is controlled by the measurement setup and which quantifies the extent to which the (anti-)symmetrization of the wave-function impacts on physical observables. Initially indistinguishable particles can gain or loose entanglement on their transition to distinguishability, and their quantum statistical behavior depends on their initial entanglement. Our results show that entanglement cannot be attributed to a state of identical particles alone, but that the detection process has to be incorporated in the analysis.

Tailoring many-body entanglement through local control

We construct optimal time-local control pulses based on a multipartite entanglement measure as target functional. The underlying control Hamiltonians are derived in a purely algebraic fashion, and the resulting pulses drive a composite quantum system rapidly into that highly entangled state which can be created most efficiently for a given interaction mechanism, and which bears entanglement that is robust against decoherence. Moreover, it is shown that the control scheme is insensitive to experimental imperfections in first order.

We identify regular structures in the globally chaotic spectra of an interacting bosonic quantum gas in tilted periodic potentials. The associated eigenstates exhibit strong localization properties on the lattice, and are dynamically robust against external perturbations.

Essential entanglement for atomic and molecular physics

Entanglement is nowadays considered as a key quantity for the understanding of correlations, transport properties, and phase transitions in composite quantum systems, and thus receives interest beyond the engineered applications in the focus of quantum information science. We review recent experimental and theoretical progress in the study of quantum correlations under that wider perspective, with an emphasis on rigorous definitions of the entanglement of identical particles, and on entanglement studies in atoms and molecules.

Quantum gates using electronic and nuclear spins of Yb$^{+}$ in a magnetic field gradient

An efficient scheme is proposed to carry out gate operations on an array of trapped Yb$^+$ ions, based on a previous proposal using both electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in a magnetic field gradient. For this purpose we consider the Paschen-Back regime (strong magnetic field) and employ a high-field approximation in this treatment. We show the possibility to suppress the unwanted coupling between the electron spins by appropriately swapping states between electronic and nuclear spins. The feasibility of generating the required high magnetic field is discussed.

Non-monotonic quantum to classical transition in multiparticle interference

We experimentally demonstrate the non-monotonic dependence of genuine many-particle interference signals on the particles' mutual distinguishability. Our theoretical analysis shows that such non-monotonicity is a generic feature of the quantum to classical transition in multiparticle correlation functions of more than two particles.

Counting Statistics of Many-Particle Quantum Walks

We study quantum walks of many non-interacting particles on a beam splitter array, as a paradigmatic testing ground for the competition of single- and many-particle interference in a multi-mode system. We derive a general expression for multi-mode particle-number correlation functions, valid for bosons and fermions, and infer pronounced signatures of many-particle interferences in the counting statistics.
