Four-Photon (In)Distinguishability Transition

We demonstrate the conspiration of many-particle interferences of different degree to determine the transmission of four photons of tunable indistinguishability through a four-port beam splitter array. The probability of certain output events depends non-monotonically on the degree of distinguishability, due to distinct multi-particle interference contributions to the transmission signal.

Matter-Wave Imaging of Quantum Density Fluctuations in Ultracold Bosons in an Optical Lattice

We study the influence of quantum density fluctuations in ultracold atoms in an optical lattice on the scattering of matter waves. Such fluctuations are characteristic of the superfluid phase and vanish due to increased interactions in the Mott insulating phase. We employ an analytical treatment of the scattering and demonstrate that the fluctuations lead to incoherent processes, which we propose to observe via decoherence of the fringes in a Mach-Zender interferometer. In this way we extract the purely coherent part of the scattering. Further, we show that the quantum density fluctuations can also be observed directly in the differential angular scattering cross section for an atomic beam scattered from the atoms in a lattice. Here we find an explicit dependence of the scale of the inelastic scattering on the quantum density fluctuations.

Efficient and coherent excitation transfer across disordered molecular networks

We show that finite-size, disordered molecular networks can mediate highly efficient, coherent excitation transfer which is robust against ambient dephasing and associated with strong multi-site entanglement. Such optimal, random molecular conformations may explain efficient energy transfer in the photosynthetic FMO complex.

Zero-Transmission Law for Multiport Beam Splitters

The Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is generalized to a configuration of n bosons prepared in the n input ports of a Bell multiport beam splitter. We derive a strict suppression law for most possible output events, consistent with a generic bosonic behavior after suitable coarse graining.

Detection of high-dimensional genuine multi-partite entanglement of mixed states

We derive a general framework to identify genuinely multipartite entangled mixed quantum states in arbitrary-dimensional systems and show in exemplary cases that the constructed criteria are stronger than those previously known. Our criteria are simple functions of the given quantum state and detect genuine multipartite entanglement that had not been identified so far. They are experimentally accessible without quantum state tomography and are easily computable as no optimization or eigenvalue evaluation is needed.

Optimal dynamical control of many-body entanglement

The preparation of highly entangled many-body systems is one of the central challenges of both basic and applied science. The complexity of interparticle interaction and environment coupling increases rapidly with the number of to-be-entangled subsystems, rendering the requirements on the control of many-body quantum systems ever more restrictive. We propose an approach that allows to derive optimal control Hamiltonians in a purely algebraic fashion. These drive a composite quantum system rapidly into that highly entangled state which can be created most efficiently for a given interaction mechanism, and which bears entanglement that is robust against decoherence.

Matter Wave Scattering from Ultracold Atoms in an Optical Lattice

We study matter wave scattering from an ultracold, many body atomic system trapped in an optical lattice. We determine the angular cross section that a matter wave probe sees and show that it is strongly affected by the many body phase, superfluid or Mott insulator, of the target lattice. We determine these cross sections analytically in the first Born approximation, and we examine the variation at intermediate points in the phase transition by numerically diagonalizing the Bose Hubbard Hamiltonian for a small lattice. We show that matter wave scattering offers a convenient method for non-destructively probing the quantum many body phase transition of atoms in an optical lattice.

Detection and typicality of bound entangled states

We derive an explicit analytic estimate for the entanglement of a large class of bipartite quantum states which extends into bound entanglement regions. This is done by using an efficiently computable concurrence lower bound, which is further employed to numerically construct a volume of $3 \times 3$ bound entangled states.

Robust entangled states

We establish a technique to find the states with most robust entanglement in dissipative quantum systems and explicitly construct those state for various environments.

Simulability and regularity of complex quantum systems

We show that the transition from regular to chaotic spectral statistics in interacting many-body quantum systems has an unambiguous signature in the distribution of Schmidt coefficients dynamically generated from a generic initial state, and thus limits the efficiency of the t-DMRG algorithm.

Simulation of open quantum systems

We present an approach for the semiclassical treatment of open quantum systems. An expansion into localized states allows restriction of a simulation to a fraction of the environment that is located within a predefined vicinity of the system. Adding and dropping environmental particles during the simulation yields an effective reduction of the size of the system that is being treated.

Phase transitions, entanglement and quantum noise interferometry in cold atoms

We show that entanglement monotones can characterize the pronounced enhancement of entanglement at a quantum phase transition if they are sensitive to long-range high order correlations. These monotones are found to develop a sharp peak at the critical point and to exhibit universal scaling. We demonstrate that similar features are shared by noise correlations and verify that these experimentally accessible quantities indeed encode entanglement information and probe separability.

Recoil Free Scattering From a Free Gas

We present a treatment of decoherence in an atom due to scattering from a gas of free particles. We show that there is a recoil free scattering process that leaves both the atom and the gas in an unchanged state, but allows for the acquisition of a phase shift that remains in the free space limit. This is essential to understanding decoherence in a separated arm atom interferometer, where a gas of atoms forms a refractive medium for a matter wave. Our work clarifies the extent to which scattering of a free particle acts as a which-way measurement.

Entanglement measures as physical observables

We discuss why regular observables can not be proper entanglement measures, and how observables in a generalized setting can be used to make an entanglement monotone a directly observable quantity for the case of pure states. For the case of mixed states, these generalized observables can be used to find valid lower bounds on entanglement monotones that can be measured in laboratory experiments in the same fashion as it can also be done for pure states.

Measuring Multipartite Concurrence with a Single Factorizable Observable

We show that, for any composite system with an arbitrary number of finite-dimensional subsystems, it is possible to directly measure the multipartite concurrence of pure states by detecting only one single factorizable observable, provided that two copies of the composite state are available. This result can be immediately put into practice in trapped-ion and entangled-photon experiments.

Entanglement-screening by nonlinear resonances

We show that nonlinear resonances in a classically mixed phase space allow to define generic, strongly entangled multi-partite quantum states. The robustness of their multipartite entanglement increases with the particle number, i.e. in the semiclassical limit, for those classes of diffusive noise which assist the quantum-classical transition.
