On the spatial extent of localized eigenfunctions for random Schrödinger operators

The present paper is devoted to new, improved bounds for the eigenfunctions of random operators in the localized regime. We prove that, in the localized regime with good probability, each eigenfunction is exponentially decaying outside a ball of a certain radius, which we call the "localization onset length". For $\ell>0$ large, we count the number of eigenfunctions having onset length larger than $\ell$ and find it to be smaller than $\exp(-C\ell)$ times the total number of eigenfunctions in the system. Thus, most eigenfunctions localize on finite size balls independent of the system size.

WKB asymptotics of meromorphic solutions of difference equations

We consider the difference Schr{\''o}dinger equation $ψ(z+h)+ψ(z-h)+ v(z)ψ(z)=0$ where $z$ is a complex variable and $h$ is a small positive parameter. If $v$ is an analytic function, then, for $h$ sufficiently small, the analytic solutions to this equation have standard semi-classical behavior that can be described by means of an analog of the complex WKB method for differential equations. In the present paper, we assume that $v$ has a simple pole and, in its neighborhood, we study the asymptotics of meromorphic solutions to the difference Schr{\''o}dinger equation.

The complex WKB method for difference equations and Airy functions

We consider the difference Schr{ö}dinger equation $ψ$(z + h) + $ψ$(z -- h) + v(z)$ψ$(z) = 0 where z is a complex variable, h > 0 is a parameter, and v is an analytic function. As h $\rightarrow$ 0 analytic solutions to this equation have a standard quasiclassical behavior near the points where v(z) = $\pm$2. We study analytic solutions near the points z 0 satisfying v(z 0) = $\pm$2 and v (z 0) = 0. For the finite difference equation, these points are the natural analogues of the simple turning points defined for the differential equation --$ψ$ (z) + v(z)$ψ$(z) = 0. In an h-independent neighborhood of such a point, we derive uniform asymptotic expansions for analytic solutions to the difference equation.

Semiclassical resolvent estimates for bounded potentials

We study the cut-off resolvent of semiclassical Schr{ö}dinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with bounded compactly supported potentials $V$. We prove that for real energies $λ^2$ in a compact interval in $\mathbb{R}_+$ and for any smooth cut-off function $χ$ supported in a ball near the support of the potential $V$, for some constant $C>0$, one has \begin{equation*} \| χ(-h^2Δ+ V-λ^2)^{-1} χ\|_{L^2\to H^1} \leq C \,\mathrm{e}^{Ch^{-4/3}\log \frac{1}{h} }. \end{equation*} This bound shows in particular an upper bound on the imaginary parts of the resonances $λ$, defined as a pole of the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent $(-h^2Δ+ V-λ^2)^{-1}$ as an operator $L^2_{\mathrm{comp}}\to H^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$: any resonance $λ$ with real part in a compact interval away from $0$ has imaginary part at most \begin{equation*} \mathrm{Im} λ\leq - C^{-1} \,\mathrm{e}^{Ch^{-4/3}\log \frac{1}{h} }. \end{equation*} This is related to a conjecture by Landis: The principal Carleman estimate in our proof provides as well a lower bound on the decay rate of $L^2$ solutions $u$ to $-Δu = Vu$ with $0\not\equiv V\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We show that there exist a constant $M>0$ such that for any such $u$, for $R>0$ sufficiently large, one has \begin{equation*} \int_{B(0,R+1)\backslash \overline{B(0,R)}}|u(x)|^2 dx \geq M^{-1}R^{-4/3} \mathrm{e}^{-M \|V\|_{\infty}^{2/3} R^{4/3}}\|u\|^2_2. \end{equation*}

Stark-Wannier Ladders and Cubic Exponential Sums

On L 2 (R), we consider the Schrödinger operator (1.1) H ǫ = -- $\partial$ 2 $\partial$x 2 + v(x) -- ǫx, where v is a real analytic 1-periodic function and ǫ is a positive constant. This operator is a model to study a Bloch electron in a constant electric field ([1]). The parameter ǫ is proportional to the electric field. The operator (1.1) was studied both by physicists (see, e.g., the review [6]) and by mathematicians (see, e.g., [9]). Its spectrum is absolutely continuous and fills the real axis. One of main features of H ǫ is the existence of Stark-Wannier ladders. These are ǫ-periodic sequences of resonances, which are poles of the analytic continuation of the resolvent kernel in the lower half plane through the spectrum (see, e.g., [2]). Most of the mathematical work studied the case of small ǫ (see, e.g., [9, 3] and references therein). When ǫ is small, there are ladders exponentially close to the real axis. Actually, only the case of finite gap potentials v was relatively well understood. For these potentials, there is only a finite number of ladders exponentially close to the real axis. It was further noticed that the ladders non-trivially "interact" as ǫ changes, and conjectured that the behavior of the resonances strongly depends on number theoretical properties of ǫ (see, e.g., [1]). In the present note, we only consider the periodic potential v(x) = 2 cos(2$π$x) and study the reflection coefficient r(E) of the Stark-Wannier operator (1.1) in the lower half of the complex plane of the spectral parameter E. The resonances are the poles of the reflection coefficient. We show that, as Im E $\rightarrow$ --$\infty$, the function E $\rightarrow$ 1 r(E) can be asymptotically described in terms of a regularized cubic exponential sum that is a close relative of the cubic exponential sums often encountered in analytic number theory. This explains the dependence of the reflection coefficient on the arithmetic.

Resonances for large one-dimensional "ergodic" systems

The present paper is devoted to the study of resonances for one-dimensional quantum systems with a potential that is the restriction to some large box of an ergodic potential. For discrete models both on a half-line and on the whole line, we study the distributions of the resonances in the limit when the size of the box where the potential does not vanish goes to infinity. For periodic and random potentials, we analyze how the spectral theory of the limit operator influences the distribution of the resonances.

Interacting electrons in a random medium: a simple one-dimensional model

The present paper is devoted to the study of a simple model of interacting electrons in a random background. In a large interval $Λ$, we consider $n$ one dimensional particles whose evolution is driven by the Luttinger-Sy model, i.e., the interval $Λ$ is split into pieces delimited by the points of a Poisson process of intensity $μ$ and, in each piece, the Hamiltonian is the Dirichlet Laplacian. The particles interact through a repulsive pair potential decaying polynomially fast at infinity. We assume that the particles have a positive density, i.e., $n/|Λ|\toρ>0$ as $|Λ|\to+\infty$. In the low density or large disorder regime, i.e., $ρ/μ$ small, we obtain a two term asymptotic for the thermodynamic limit of the ground state energy per particle of the interacting system; the first order correction term to the non interacting ground state energy per particle is controlled by pairs of particles living in the same piece. The ground state is described in terms of its one and two-particles reduced density matrix. Comparing the interacting and the non interacting ground states, one sees that the effect of the repulsive interactions is to move a certain number of particles living together with another particle in a single piece to a new piece that was free of particles in the non interacting ground state.

Spectral statistics for weakly correlated random potentials

We study localization and derive stochastic estimates (in particular, Wegner and Minami estimates) for the eigenvalues of weakly correlated random discrete Schrödinger operators in the localized phase. We apply these results to obtain spectral statistics for general discrete alloy type models where the single site perturbation is neither of finite rank nor of fixed sign. In particular, for the models under study, the random potential exhibits correlations at any range.

Spectral statistics for random Schrödinger operators in the localized regime

We study various statistics related to the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of random Hamiltonians in the localized regime. Consider a random Hamiltonian at an energy $E$ in the localized phase. Assume the density of states function is not too flat near $E$. Restrict it to some large cube $Λ$. Consider now $I_Λ$, a small energy interval centered at $E$ that asymptotically contains infintely many eigenvalues when the volume of the cube $Λ$ grows to infinity. We prove that, with probability one in the large volume limit, the eigenvalues of the random Hamiltonian restricted to the cube inside the interval are given by independent identically distributed random variables, up to an error of size an arbitrary power of the volume of the cube. As a consequence, we derive * uniform Poisson behavior of the locally unfolded eigenvalues, * a.s. Poisson behavior of the joint distibutions of the unfolded energies and unfolded localization centers in a large range of scales. * the distribution of the unfolded level spacings, locally and globally, * the distribution of the unfolded localization centers, locally and globally.

Inverse tunneling estimates and applications to the study of spectral statistics of random operators on the real line

We present a proof of Minami type estimates for one dimensional random Schrödinger operators valid at all energies in the localization regime provided a Wegner estimate is known to hold. The Minami type estimates are then applied to various models to obtain results on their spectral statistics. The heuristics underlying our proof of Minami type estimates is that close by eigenvalues of a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator correspond either to eigenfunctions that live far away from each other in space or they come from some tunneling phenomena. In the second case, one can undo the tunneling and thus construct quasi-modes that live far away from each other in space.

Enhanced Wegner and Minami estimates and eigenvalue statistics of random Anderson models at spectral edges

We consider the discrete Anderson model and prove enhanced Wegner and Minami estimates where the interval length is replaced by the IDS computed on the interval. We use these estimates to improve on the description of finite volume eigenvalues and eigenfunctions obtained in a previous paper. As a consequence of the improved description of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we revisit a number of results on the spectral statistics in the localized regime and extend their domain of validity, namely : - the local spectral statistics for the unfolded eigenvalues; - the local asymptotic ergodicity of the unfolded eigenvalues; In dimension 1, for the standard Anderson model, the improvement enables us to obtain the local spectral statistics at band edge, that is in the Lifshitz tail regime. In higher dimensions, this works for modified Anderson models.

Understanding the Random Displacement Model: From Ground-State Properties to Localization

We give a detailed survey of results obtained in the most recent half decade which led to a deeper understanding of the random displacement model, a model of a random Schrödinger operator which describes the quantum mechanics of an electron in a structurally disordered medium. These results started by identifying configurations which characterize minimal energy, then led to Lifshitz tail bounds on the integrated density of states as well as a Wegner estimate near the spectral minimum, which ultimately resulted in a proof of spectral and dynamical localization at low energy for the multi-dimensional random displacement model.

Resonances for "large" ergodic systems in one dimension: a review

The present note reviews recent results on resonances for one-dimensional quantum ergodic systems constrained to a large box. We restrict ourselves to one dimensional models in the discrete case. We consider two type of ergodic potentials on the half-axis, periodic potentials and random potentials. For both models, we describe the behavior of the resonances near the real axis for a large typical sample of the potential. In both cases, the linear density of their real parts is given by the density of states of the full ergodic system. While in the periodic case, the resonances distribute on a nice analytic curve (once their imaginary parts are suitably renormalized), In the random case, the resonances (again after suitable renormalization of both the real and imaginary parts) form a two dimensional Poisson cloud.

Localization for the random displacement model

We prove spectral and dynamical localization for the multi-dimensional random displacement model near the bottom of its spectrum by showing that the approach through multiscale analysis is applicable. In particular, we show that a previously known Lifshitz tail bound can be extended to our setting and prove a new Wegner estimate. A key tool is given by a quantitative form of a property of a related single-site Neumann problem which can be described as "bubbles tend to the corners".

Asymptotic ergodicity of the eigenvalues of random operators in the localized phase

We prove that, for a general class of random operators, the family of the unfolded eigenvalues in the localization region is asymptotically ergodic in the sense of N. Minami (see [Mi:11]). N. Minami conjectured this to be the case for discrete Anderson model in the localized regime. We also provide a local analogue of this result. From the asymptotics ergodicity, one can recover the statistics of the level spacings as well as a number of other spectral statistics. Our proofs rely on the analysis developed in abs/1011.1832.

Lifshitz tails for alloy type models in a constant magnetic field

In this note, we study Lifshitz tails for a 2D Landau Hamiltonian perturbed by a random alloy-type potential constructed with single site potentials decaying at least at a Gaussian speed. We prove that, if the Landau level stays preserved as a band edge for the perturbed Hamiltonian, at the Landau levels, the integrated density of states has a Lifshitz behavior of the type $e^{-\log^2|E-2bq|}$.

Spectral statistics for the discrete Anderson model in the localized regime

We report on recent results on the spectral statistics of the discrete Anderson model in the localized phase. Our results show, in particular, that, for the discrete Anderson Hamiltonian with smoothly distributed random potential at sufficiently large coupling, the limit of the level spacing distribution is that of i.i.d. random variables distributed according to the density of states of the random Hamiltonian. This text is a contribution to the proceedings of the conference "Spectra of Random Operators and Related Topics" held at Kyoto University, 02-04/12/09 organized by N. Minami and N. Ueki.
