Primary and Secondary Order Parameters in the Fully Frustrated Transverse Field Ising Model on the Square Lattice

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theory arguments, we study the fully frustrated (Villain) transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice. We consider a "primary" spin order parameter and a "secondary" dimer order parameter, which both lead to the same phase diagram but detect $Z_8$ and $Z_4$ symmetry, respectively. The spin order scales with conventional exponents, both in the finite temperature critical phase and at the $T = 0$ quantum critical point. The scaling of the dimer order requires more detailed investigations of the applicable low-energy theories; the height model at $T > 0$ and the $O(2)$ model in 2+1 dimensions at $T = 0$. Relating the order parameters to operators in these effective models, we predict the secondary critical exponents and confirm them numerically. The relationships between the primary and secondary order parameters have not been previously discussed in this context and provide insight more broadly for Ising models whose low-energy physics involves dimer degrees of freedom.

Numerical investigation of the structure factors of the Read-Rezayi series

We numerically investigate the guiding center stucture factors of several states in the Read-Rezayi family. Using exact diagonalizations on the torus and density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder, we test a conjecture proposed in [Can et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113 (2014)] for the $ν= \frac{3}{5}$ and $ν= \frac{4}{6}$ Read-Rezayi states. Furthermore, we discuss the strong finite-size effects present in numerically accessible wavefunctions, and provide a simple recipe to minimize them on manifolds where non-Abelian theories have topological degeneracies.

Critical line of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet in a field from a $C_3$-symmetric corner transfer matrix algorithm

The corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) algorithm has been extensively used to investigate both classical and quantum two-dimensional (2D) lattice models. The convergence of the algorithm can strongly vary from model to model depending on the underlying geometry and symmetries, and the presence of algebraic correlations. An important factor in the convergence of the algorithm is the lattice symmetry, which can be broken due to the necessity of mapping the problem onto the square lattice. We propose a variant of the CTMRG algorithm, designed for models with $C_3$-symmetry, which we apply to the conceptually simple yet numerically challenging problem of the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet in a field, at zero and low temperatures. We study how the finite-temperature three-state Potts critical line in this model approaches the ground-state Kosterlitz-Thouless transition driven by a reduced field ($h/T$). In this particular instance, we show that the $C_3$-symmetric CTMRG leads to much more precise results than both existing results from exact diagonalization of transfer matrices and Monte Carlo.

Emergent U(1) symmetry in non-particle-conserving one-dimensional models

The properties of stable Luttinger liquid phases in models with a non-conserved number of particles are investigated. We study the Luttinger liquid phases in one-dimensional models of hard-core boson and spinless fermion chains where particles can be created and annihilated three by three on adjacent sites. We provide an intuitive and systematic method based on flow equations approach, which accounts for additional terms in the correlations generated by the $\mathbb{Z}_3$-symmetric interactions. We find that despite the emergence of U(1) symmetry under renormalization, the observables are still affected by its breaking in the bare Hamiltonian. In particular, the standard bosonization mapping becomes insufficient to capture the full behavior of correlation functions.

Critical properties of the quantum Ashkin-Teller chain with chiral perturbations

We investigate the nature of the phase transitions in the quantum Ashkin-Teller chain in the presence of chiral perturbations. We locate the Lifshitz line separating a region of direct chiral transitions from the region where the transition is through an intermediate floating phase. Furthermore, we identify a small region in the vicinity of the four-state Potts point where chiral perturbations are irrelevant and where the transition remains conformal. Implications to Rydberg atoms experiments are briefly discussed.

Thermal Phase Diagram of the Square Lattice Ferro-antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg Model

Using state of the art tensor network computations combined with spin wave theory, we compute the finite temperature phase diagram of the spin 1/2 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic $J_1 < 0$ and antiferromagnetic $J_2 > 0$. We localize the first order line originating from the first order zero temperature point as well as the second order thermal transition at large $J_2$ associated with spontaneous lattice rotation symmetry breaking. This second order line terminates at a critical end point where it meets the first order line. We found no evidence for an intermediate phase.

Maple Leaf Antiferromagnet in a Magnetic Field

We analyze the quantum antiferromagnet on the maple leaf lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. Starting from its exact dimer ground state and for a magnetic field strength of the order of the local dimer spin exchange coupling, we perform a strong coupling expansion and extract an effective hardcore boson model. The interplay of effective many-body interactions, suppressed single-particle dynamics, and correlated hopping gives way to an intriguing series of superfluid to insulator transitions which correspond to magnetization plateaux in terms of the maple leaf spin degrees of freedom. While we find plateaux at intermediate magnetization to be dominated by bosonic density wave order, we conjecture plateau formation from multi-boson bound states due to correlated hopping for lower magnetization.

Field-induced bound-state condensation and spin-nematic phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ revealed by neutron scattering up to 25.9 T

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) underpins exotic forms of order ranging from superconductivity to superfluid 4 He. In quantum magnetic materials, ordered phases induced by an applied magnetic field can be described as the BEC of magnon excitations. With sufficiently strong magnetic frustration, exemplified by the system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ , no clear magnon BEC is observed and the complex spectrum of multi-magnon bound states may allow a different type of condensation, but the high fields required to probe this physics have remained a barrier to detailed investigation. Here we exploit the first purpose-built high-field neutron scattering facility to measure the spin excitations of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ up to 25.9 T and use cylinder matrix-product-states (MPS) calculations to reproduce the experimental spectra with high accuracy. Multiple unconventional features point to a condensation of $S = 2$ bound states into a spin-nematic phase, including the gradients of the one-magnon branches, the presence of many novel composite two- and three-triplon excitations and the persistence of a one-magnon spin gap. This gap reflects a direct analogy with superconductivity, suggesting that the spin-nematic phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is best understood as a condensate of bosonic Cooper pairs. Our results underline the wealth of unconventional states yet to be found in frustrated quantum magnetic materials under extreme conditions.

Eight-vertex criticality in the interacting Kitaev chain

We show that including pairing and repulsion into the description of 1D spinless fermions, as in the domain wall theory of commensurate melting or the interacting Kitaev chain, leads, for strong enough repulsion, to a line of critical points in the eight vertex universality class terminating floating phases with emergent U(1) symmetry. For nearest-neighbor repulsion and pairing, the variation of the critical exponents along the line that can be extracted from Baxter's exact solution of the XYZ chain at $J_x=-J_z$ is fully confirmed by extensive DMRG simulations of the entire phase diagram, and the qualitative features of the phase diagram are shown to be independent of the precise form of the interactions.

Conformal and chiral phase transitions in Rydberg chains

Using density matrix renormalization group simulations on open chains, we map out the wave-vector in the incommensurate disordered phase of a realistic model of Rydberg chains with $1/r^6$ interactions, and we locate and characterize the points along the commensurate lines where the transition out of the period 3 and 4 phases is conformal. We confirm that it is 3-state Potts for the period-3 phase, and we show that it is Ashkin-Teller with $ν\simeq 0.80$ for the period-4 phase. We further show that close to these points the transition is still continuous, but with a completely different scaling of the wave-vector, in agreement with a chiral transition. Finally, we propose to use the conformal points as benchmarks for Kibble-Zurek experiments, defining a roadmap towards a conclusive identification of the chiral universality class.

Partial lifting of degeneracy in the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice

Motivated by dipolar-coupled artificial spin systems, we present a theoretical study of the classical $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. We establish the ground-state phase diagram of this model for $J_1 > |J_2|, |J_3|$ based on exact results for the ground-state energies. When all the couplings are antiferromagnetic, the model has three macroscopically degenerate ground-state phases, and using tensor networks, we can calculate the entropies of these phases and of their boundaries very accurately. In two cases, the entropy appears to be a fraction of that of the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet, and we provide analytical arguments to support this observation. We also notice that, surprisingly enough, the dipolar ground state is not a ground state of the truncated model, but of the model with smaller $J_3$ interactions, an indication of a very strong competition between low-energy states in this model.

Possible restoration of particle-hole symmetry in the 5/2 Quantized Hall State at small magnetic field

Motivated by the experimental observation of a quantized 5/2 thermal conductance at filling $ν=5/2$, a result incompatible with both the Pfaffian and the Antipfaffian states, we have pushed the expansion of the effective Hamiltonian of the $5/2$ quantized Hall state to third-order in the parameter $κ=E_c/\hbar ω_c \propto 1/\sqrt{B}$ controlling the Landau level mixing , where $E_c$ is the Coulomb energy and $ω_c$ the cyclotron frequency. Exact diagonalizations of this effective Hamiltonian show that the difference in overlap with the Pfaffian and the AntiPfaffian induced at second-order is reduced by third-order corrections and disappears around $κ=0.4$, suggesting that these states are much closer in energy at smaller magnetic field than previously anticipated. Furthermore, we show that in this range of $κ$ the finite-size spectrum is typical of a quantum phase transition, with a strong reduction of the energy gap and with level crossings between excited states. These results point to the possibility of a quantum phase transition at smaller magnetic field into a phase with an emergent particle-hole symmetry that would explain the measured $5/2$ thermal conductance of the $5/2$ quantized Hall state.

Thermal critical points from competing singlet formations in fully frustrated bilayer antiferromagnets

We examine the ground-state phase diagram and thermal phase transitions in a plaquettized fully frustrated bilayer spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. Based on a combined analysis from sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, perturbation theory and free-energy arguments, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition line that separates two competing quantum-disordered ground states with dominant singlet formations on inter-layer dimers and plaquettes, respectively. At finite temperatures, this line extends to form a wall of first-order thermal transitions, which terminates in a line of thermal critical points. From a perturbative approach in terms of an effective Ising model description, we identify a quadratic suppression of the critical temperature scale in the strongly plaquettized region. Based on free-energy arguments we furthermore obtain the full phase boundary of the low-temperature dimer-singlet regime, which agrees well with the quantum Monte Carlo data.

Tensor network investigation of the hard-square model

Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group to contract the tensor network that describes its partition function, we investigate the nature of the phase transitions of the hard-square model, one of the exactly solved models of statistical physics for which Baxter has found an integrable manifold. The motivation is twofold: assess the power of tensor networks for such models, and probe the 2D classical analog of a 1D quantum model of hard-core bosons that has recently attracted significant attention in the context of experiments on chains of Rydberg atoms. Accordingly, we concentrate on two planes in the 3D parameter space spanned by the activity and the coupling constants in the two diagonal directions. We first investigate the only case studied so far with Monte Carlo simulations, the case of opposite coupling constants. We confirm that, away and not too far from the integrable 3-state Potts point, the transition out of the period-3 phase appears to be unique in the Huse-Fisher chiral universality class, albeit with significantly different exponents as compared to Monte Carlo. We also identify two additional phase transitions not reported so far for that model, a Lifshitz disorder line, and an Ising transition for large enough activity. To make contact with 1D quantum models of Rydberg atoms, we then turn to a plane where the ferromagnetic coupling is kept fixed, and we show that the resulting phase diagram is very similar, the only difference being that the Ising transition becomes first-order through a tricritical Ising point, in agreement with Baxter's prediction that this plane should contain a tricritical Ising point, and in remarkable, almost quantitative agreement with the phase diagram of the 1D quantum version of the model.

Spinon confinement and deconfinement in spin-1 chains

Motivated by the rich phase diagrams recently unveiled in frustrated spin-1 chains with competing next-nearest neighbour and four-spin interactions, we investigate the nature of the elementary excitations of spin-1 chains in the vicinity of phase transitions using the matrix-product state (MPS) representation of elementary excitations. First, we show that both spinons and magnons naturally arise in SU(2) invariant spin chains when describing ground states and elementary excitations using MPS. Then we investigate the nature of the elementary excitations across the first-oder transition between the Haldane phase and the topologically trivial next-nearest neighbor Haldane phase. We show explicitly that spinons deconfine at the transition, and we calculate the dispersion of these deconfined spinons with MPS. We also show that, immediately away from the transition line, spinons confine, forming dispersive spinon/anti-spinon bound states on both sides of the transition. Finally, we show that deconfined spinons also appear at the transition between the Haldane phase and the spontaneously dimerized phase when this transition is first order.

Thermal Ising transition in the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model

Using an SU(2) invariant finite-temperature tensor network algorithm, we provide strong numerical evidence in favor of an Ising transition in the collinear phase of the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In units of $J_2$, the critical temperature reaches a maximal value of $T_c/J_2\simeq 0.18$ around $J_2/J_1\simeq 1.0$. It is strongly suppressed upon approaching the zero-temperature boundary of the collinear phase $J_2/J_1\simeq 0.6$, and it vanishes as $1/\log(J_2/J_1)$ in the large $J_2/J_1$ limit, as predicted by Chandra, Coleman and Larkin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 88, 1990]. Enforcing the SU(2) symmetry is crucial to avoid the artifact of finite-temperature SU(2) symmetry breaking of U(1) algorithms, opening new perspectives in the investigation of the thermal properties of quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

From SU(2)$_5$ to SU(2)$_3$ Wess-Zumino-Witten transitions in a frustrated spin-5/2 chain

We investigate the properties of a frustrated spin-5/2 chain with next-nearest neighbor two and three-site interactions, with two questions in mind: the nature of the transition into the dimerized phase induced by the three-site interaction, and the possible presence of a critical floating phase at intermediate values of the next-nearest neighbor interaction. We provide strong evidence that the continuous transition into the dimerized phase, which has been found to be generically in the Wess-Zumino-Witten SU(2)$_{2S}$ universality class up to spin $S=2$, is SU(2)$_5$ only at two isolated points of the phase diagram, and that it is SU(2)$_3$ in between, in agreement with the presence of two relevant operators allowed by symmetry for SU(2)$_5$, and with the conservation of the parity of the level index along the renormalization flow between SU(2)$_k$ theories with different values of $k$. We also find that the dimerization induced by the next-nearest neighbor interaction is a three step process, with first a small partially dimerized phase followed by a broad critical floating phase with incommensurate correlations before the fully dimerized phase is reached. Implications for the iron oxide ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{3}{\mathrm{FeMo}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ are briefly discussed.

Commensurate-incommensurate transition in the chiral Ashkin-Teller model

We investigate the classical chiral Ashkin-Teller model on a square lattice with the corner transfer matrix renormalisation group (CTMRG) algorithm. We show that the melting of the period-4 phase in the presence of a chiral perturbation takes different forms depending on the coefficient of the four-spin term in the Ashkin-Teller model. Close to the clock limit of two decoupled Ising models, the system undergoes a two-step commensurate-incommensurate transition as soon as the chirality is introduced, with an intermediate critical floating phase bounded by a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at high temperature and a Pokrovsky-Talapov transition at low temperature. By contrast, close to the four-states Potts model, we argue for the existence of a unique commensurate-incommensurate transition that belongs to the chiral universality class, and for the presence of a Lifshitz point where the ordered, disordered and floating phases meet. Finally, we map the whole phase diagram, which turns out to be in qualitative agreement with the 40 year old prediction by Huse and Fisher.
