Generalization of the Haldane conjecture to SU($n$) chains

Recently, SU(3) chains in the symmetric and self-conjugate representations have been studied using field theory techniques. For certain representations, namely rank-$p$ symmetric ones with $p$ not a multiple of 3, it was argued that the ground state exhibits gapless excitations. For the remaining representations considered, a finite energy gap exists above the ground state. In this paper, we extend these results to SU($n$) chains in the symmetric representation. For a rank-$p$ symmetric representation with $n$ and $p$ coprime, we predict gapless excitations above the ground state. If $p$ is a multiple of $n$, we predict a unique ground state with a finite energy gap. Finally, if $p$ and $n$ have a greatest common divisor $1<q<n$, we predict a ground state degeneracy of $n/q$, with a finite energy gap. To arrive at these results, we derive a non-Lorentz invariant flag manifold sigma model description of the SU($n$) chains, and use the renormalization group to show that Lorentz invariance is restored at low energies. We then make use of recently developed anomaly matching conditions for these Lorentz-invariant models. We also review the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis-Affleck theorem, and extend it to SU($n$) models with longer range interactions.

Thermodynamic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model throughout the dimer-product phase

The thermodynamic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model have posed one of the longest-lasting conundrums in frustrated quantum magnetism. Over a wide range on both sides of the quantum phase transition (QPT) from the dimer-product to the plaquette-based ground state, neither analytical nor any available numerical methods have come close to reproducing the physics of the excited states and thermal response. We solve this problem in the dimer-product phase by introducing two qualitative advances in computational physics. One is the use of thermal pure quantum (TPQ) states to augment dramatically the size of clusters amenable to exact diagonalization. The second is the use of tensor-network methods, in the form of infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS), for the calculation of finite-temperature quantities. We demonstrate convergence as a function of system size in TPQ calculations and of bond dimension in our iPEPS results, with complete mutual agreement even extremely close to the QPT. Our methods reveal a remarkably sharp and low-lying feature in the magnetic specific heat around the QPT, whose origin appears to lie in a proliferation of excitations composed of two-triplon bound states. The surprisingly low energy scale and apparently extended spatial nature of these states explain the failure of less refined numerical approaches to capture their physics. Both of our methods will have broad and immediate application in addressing the thermodynamic response of a wide range of highly frustrated magnetic models and materials.

Generalization of the Haldane conjecture to SU(3) chains

We apply field theory methods to $\mbox{SU}(3)$ chains in the symmetric representation, with $p$ boxes in the Young tableau, mapping them into a flag manifold non-linear $σ$-model with a topological angle $θ=2πp/3$. Generalizing the Haldane conjecture, we argue that the models are gapped for $p=3m$ but gapless for $p=3m\pm 1$ (for integer $m$), corresponding to a massless phase of the $σ$-model at $θ=\pm 2π/3$. We confirm this with Monte Carlo calculations on the $σ$-model.

Self-conjugate representation SU(3) chains

It was recently argued that SU(3) chains in the $p$-box symmetric irreducible representation (irrep) exhibit a "Haldane gap" when $p$ is a multiple of 3 and are otherwise gapless [Nucl. Phys. B $\boldsymbol{924}$, 508 (2017)]. We extend this argument to the self-conjugate irreps of SU(3) with $p$ columns of length 2 and $p$ columns of length 1 in the Young tableau ($p=1$ corresponding to the adjoint irrep), arguing that they are always gapped but have spontaneously broken parity symmetry for $p$ odd but not even.

Dimensional crossover in the SU(4) Heisenberg model in the six-dimensional antisymmetric self-conjugate representation revealed by quantum Monte Carlo and linear flavor-wave theory

Using linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) and auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), we investigate the properties of the SU(4) Heisenberg model on the anisotropic square lattice in the fully antisymmetric six-dimensional irreducible representation, a model that describes interacting fermions with four flavors at half-filling. Thanks to the calculations on very large systems, we have been able to convincingly demonstrate that QMC results are consistent with a small but finite antiferromagnetic moment at the isotropic point, in qualitative agreement with LFWT obtained earlier [F. H. Kim {\it{et al.}}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 96}, 205142 (2017)], and in quantitative agreement with results obtained previously on the Hubbard model [D. Wang {\it{et al.}}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 112}, 156403 (2014)] after extrapolation to infinite $U/t$. The presence of a long-range antiferromagnetic order has been further confirmed by showing that a phase transition takes place into a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase not too far from the isotropic point when reducing the coupling constant along one direction on the way to decoupled chains.

Dimerization and effective decoupling in two spin-1 generalizations of the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain

We perform a systematic DMRG investigation of the two natural spin-1 generalizations of the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain, the spin-1 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg chain, where $J_2$ is a next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg coupling, and the spin-1 $J_1-J_3$ model, where $J_3$ refers to a three-site interaction defined by $J_3\left[({\bf S}_{i-1}\cdot {\bf S}_i)({\bf S}_i\cdot {\bf S}_{i+1})+\mathrm {H.c.}\right]$. Although both models are rigorously equivalent to the Majumdar-Ghosh chain for spin-1/2, their physics appears to be quite different for spin 1. Indeed, when all couplings are antiferromagnetic, the spin-1 $J_1-J_2$ model undergoes an effective decoupling into two next-nearest neighbour (NNN) Haldane chains upon increasing $J_2$, while the $J_1-J_3$ chain undergoes a spontaneous dimerization similar to the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain upon increasing $J_3$. By extending the phase diagram to all signs of the couplings, we show that both the dimerized and the NNN-Haldane phase are actually present in the $J_1-J_3$ model, the former one adjacent to the Haldane one, the latter one to the ferromagneric one, with an Ising transition between them. By contrast, the $J_1-J_2$ chain only has a NNN-Haldane phase between the Haldane phase and the ferromagnetic phase for positive $J_2$. In both cases, our DMRG data are consistent with a continuous Kosterlitz-Thouless transition between the NNN-Haldane and the ferromagnetic phases.

Novel families of ${\rm SU}(N)$ AKLT states with arbitrary self-conjugate edge states

Using the Matrix Product State framework, we generalize the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) construction to one-dimensional spin liquids with global color ${\rm SU}(N)$ symmetry, finite correlation lengths, and edge states that can belong to any self-conjugate irreducible representation (irrep) of ${\rm SU}(N)$. In particular, ${\rm SU}(2)$ spin-$1$ AKLT states with edge states of arbitrary spin $s=1/2,1,3/2,\cdots$ are constructed, and a general formula for their correlation length is given. Furthermore, we show how to construct local parent Hamiltonians for which these AKLT states are unique ground states. This enables us to study the stability of the edge states by interpolating between exact AKLT Hamiltonians. As an example, in the case of spin-$1$ physical degrees of freedom, it is shown that a quantum phase transition of central charge $c = 1$ separates the Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phase with spin-$1/2$ edge states from a topologically trivial phase with spin-$1$ edge states. We also address some specificities of the generalization to ${\rm SU}(N)$ with $N>2$, in particular regarding the construction of parent Hamiltonians. For the AKLT state of the ${\rm SU}(3)$ model with the $3$-box symmetric representation, we prove that the edge states are in the $8$-dimensional adjoint irrep, and for the ${\rm SU}(3)$ model with adjoint irrep at each site, we are able to construct two different reflection-symmetric AKLT Hamiltonians, each with a unique ground state which is either even or odd under reflection symmetry and with edge states in the adjoint irrep. Finally, examples of two-column and adjoint physical irreps for ${\rm SU}(N)$ with $N$ even and with edge states living in the antisymmetric irrep with $N/2$ boxes are given, with a conjecture about the general formula for their correlation lengths.

Asymptotic Freedom and Large Spin Antiferromagnetic Chains

Building on the mapping of large-$S$ spin chains onto the O($3$) nonlinear $σ$ model with coupling constant $2/S$, and on general properties of that model (asymptotic freedom, implying that perturbation theory is valid at high energy, and Elitzur's conjecture that rotationally invariant quantities are infrared finite in perturbation theory), we use the Holstein-Primakoff representation to derive analytic expressions for the equal-time and dynamical spin-spin correlations valid at distances smaller than $S^{-1} \exp(πS)$ or at energies larger than $J S^2 \exp(-πS)$, where $J$ is the Heisenberg exchange coupling. This is supported by comparing the static correlations with quantum Monte Carlo simulations for $S = 5/2$.

Exploring the Kondo effect of an extended impurity with chains of Co adatoms in a magnetic field

Motivated by recent STM experiments, we explore the magnetic field induced Kondo effect that takes place at symmetry protected level crossings in finite Co adatom chains. We argue that the effective two-level system realized at a level crossing acts as an extended impurity coupled to the conduction electrons of the substrate by a distribution of Kondo couplings at the sites of the chain. Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which quantitatively reproduce the field dependence of the zero-bias signal, we show that a proper Kondo resonance is present at the sites where the effective Kondo coupling dominates. Our modeling and numerical simulations provide a theoretical basis for the interpretation of the STM spectrum in terms of level crossings of the Co adatom chains.

DMRG investigation of constrained models: from quantum dimer and quantum loop ladders to hard-boson and Fibonacci anyon chains

Motivated by the presence of Ising transitions that take place entirely in the singlet sector of frustrated spin-1/2 ladders and spin-1 chains, we study two types of effective dimer models on ladders, a quantum dimer model and a quantum loop model. Building on the constraints imposed on the dimers, we develop a Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm that takes full advantage of the relatively small Hilbert space that only grows as Fibonacci number. We further show that both models can be mapped rigorously onto a hard-boson model first studied by Fendley, Sengupta and Sachdev [Phys. Rev. B 69, 075106 (2004)], and combining early results with recent results obtained with the present algorithm on this hard-boson model, we discuss the full phase diagram of these quantum dimer and quantum loop models, with special emphasis on the phase transitions. In particular, using conformal field theory, we fully characterize the Ising transition and the tricritical Ising end point, with a complete analysis of the boundary-field correspondence for the tricritical Ising point including partially polarized edges. Finally, we show that the Fibonacci anyon chain is exactly equivalent to special critical points of these models.

Thermodynamic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model from quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We investigate the minus-sign problem that afflicts quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of frustrated quantum spin systems, focusing on spin S=1/2, two spatial dimensions, and the extended Shastry-Sutherland model. We show that formulating the Hamiltonian in the diagonal dimer basis leads to a sign problem that becomes negligible at low temperatures for small and intermediate values of the ratio of the inter- and intradimer couplings. This is a consequence of the fact that the product state of dimer singlets is the exact ground state both of the extended Shastry-Sutherland model and of a corresponding "sign-problem-free" model, obtained by changing the signs of all positive off-diagonal matrix elements in the dimer basis. By exploiting this insight, we map the sign problem throughout the extended parameter space from the Shastry-Sutherland to the fully frustrated bilayer model and compare it with the phase diagram computed by tensor-network methods. We use QMC to compute with high accuracy the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat and susceptibility of the Shastry-Sutherland model for large systems up to a coupling ratio of 0.526(1) and down to zero temperature. For larger coupling ratios, our QMC results assist us in benchmarking the evolution of the thermodynamic properties by systematic comparison with exact diagonalization calculations and interpolated high-temperature series expansions.

Emergent Bound States and Impurity Pairs in Chemically Doped Shastry-Sutherland System

The search for novel unconventional superconductors is a central topic of modern condensed matter physics. Similar to other Mott insulators, Shastry-Sutherland (SSL) systems are predicted to become superconducting when chemically doped. This makes SrCu2(BO3)2, an experimental realization of SSL model, a suitable candidate and understanding of the doping effects in it very important. Here we report doping-induced emergent states in Mg-doped SrCu2(BO3)2, which remain stable up to high magnetic fields. Using four complementary magnetometry techniques and theoretical simulations, a rich impurity-induced phenomenology at high fields is discovered. The results demonstrate a rare example in which even a small doping concentration interacts strongly with both triplets and bound states of triplets, and thus plays a significant role in the magnetization process even at high magnetic fields. Moreover, our findings of the emergence of the very stable impurity pairs provide insights into the anticipated unconventional superconductivity in SrCu2(BO3)2 and related materials.

Floating phase versus chiral transition in a 1D hard-boson model

We investigate the nature of the phase transition between the period-three charge-density wave and the disordered phase of a hard-boson model proposed in the context of cold-atom experiments. Building on a density-matrix renormalization group algorithm that takes full advantage of the hard-boson constraints, we study systems with up to 9'000 sites and calculate the correlation length and the wave-vector of the incommensurate short-range correlations with unprecedented accuracy. We provide strong numerical evidence that there is an intermediate floating phase far enough from the integrable Potts point, while in its vicinity, our numerical data are consistent with a unique transition in the Huse-Fisher chiral universality class.

Rigorous decoupling between edge states in frustrated spin chains and ladders

We investigate the occurrence of exact zero modes in one-dimensional quantum magnets of finite length that possess edge states. Building on conclusions first reached in the context of the spin-1/2 XY chain in a field, then for the spin-1 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model, we show that the development of incommensurate correlations in the bulk invariably leads to oscillations in the sign of the coupling between edge states, hence to exact zero energy modes at the crossing points where the coupling between the edge states rigorously vanishes. This is true regardless of the origin of the frustration (e.g. next-nearest neighbor coupling or biquadratic coupling for the spin-1 chain), of the value of the bulk spin (we report on spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-2 examples), and of the value of the edge-state emergent spin (spin-1/2 or spin-1).

DMRG simulations of SU(N) Heisenberg chains using standard Young tableaux: fundamental representation and comparison with finite-size Bethe ansatz

We develop an efficient method to perform density matrix renormalization group simulations of the SU(N) Heisenberg chain with open boundary conditions taking full advantage of the SU(N) symmetry of the problem. This method is an extension of the method previously developed for exact diagonalizations and relies on a systematic use of the basis of standard Young tableaux. Concentrating on the model with the fundamental representation at each site (i.e. one particle per site in the fermionic formulation), we have benchmarked our results for the ground state energy up to N = 8 and up to 420 sites by comparing them with Bethe ansatz results on open chains, for which we have derived and solved the Bethe ansatz equations. The agreement for the ground state energy is excellent for SU(3) (12 digits). It decreases with N , but it is still satisfactory for N = 8 (6 digits). Central charges c are also extracted from the entanglement entropy using the Calabrese-Cardy formula, and agree with the theoretical values expected from the SU(N)1 Wess-Zumino-Witten CFTs.

Microscopic theory of the nearest-neighbor valence bond sector of the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, which is closely realized in layered Mott insulators such as ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, is one of the oldest and most enigmatic spin-1/2 lattice model. While the numerical evidence has accumulated in favor of a quantum spin liquid, the debate is still open as to whether it is a $Z_2$ spin liquid with very short-range correlations (some kind of Resonating Valence Bond spin liquid), or an algebraic spin-liquid with power-law correlations. To address this issue, we have pushed the program started by Rokhsar and Kivelson in their derivation of the effective quantum dimer model description of Heisenberg models to unprecedented accuracy for the spin-1/2 kagome, by including all the most important virtual singlet contributions on top of the orthogonalization of the nearest-neighbor valence bond singlet basis. Quite remarkably, the resulting picture is a competition between a $Z_2$ spin liquid and a diamond valence bond crystal with a 12-site unit cell, as in the DMRG simulations of Yan, Huse and White. Furthermore, we found that, on cylinders of finite diameter $d$, there is a transition between the $Z_2$ spin liquid at small $d$ and the diamond valence bond crystal at large $d$, the prediction of the present microscopic description for the 2D lattice. These results show that, if the ground state of the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet can be described by nearest-neighbor singlet dimers, it is a diamond valence bond crystal, and, a contrario, that, if the system is a quantum spin liquid, it has to involve long-range singlets, consistent with the algebraic spin liquid scenario.

Infinite coherence time of edge spins in finite-length chains

Motivated by the recent observation that exponentially long coherence times can be achieved for edge spins in models with strong zero modes, we study the impact of level crossings in finite-length spin chains on the dynamics of the edge spins. Focussing on the XY spin-1=2 chain with transverse or longitudinal magnetic field, two models relevant to understand recent experimental results on cobalt adatoms, we show that the edge spins can remain coherent for an infinite time even for a finite-length chain if the magnetic field is tuned to a value at which there is a level crossing. Furthermore, we show that the edge spins remain coherent for any initial state for the integrable case of transverse field because all states have level crossings at the same value of the field, while the coherence time is increasingly large for lower temperatures in the case of longitudinal field, which is non-integrable.

Linear Flavor-Wave Theory for Fully Antisymmetric $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Irreducible Representations

The extension of the linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) to fully antisymmetric irreducible representations (irreps) of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ is presented in order to investigate the color order of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models in several two-dimensional geometries. The square, triangular and honeycomb lattices are considered with $m$ fermionic particles per site. We present two different methods: the first method is the generalization of the multiboson spin-wave approach to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ which consists of associating a Schwinger boson to each state on a site. The second method adopts the Read and Sachdev bosons which are an extension of the Schwinger bosons that introduces one boson for each color and each line of the Young tableau. The two methods yield the same dispersing modes, a good indication that they properly capture the semi-classical fluctuations, but the first one leads to spurious flat modes of finite frequency not present in the second one. Both methods lead to the same physical conclusions otherwise: long-range Néel-type order is likely for the square lattice for $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ with two particles per site, but quantum fluctuations probably destroy order for more than two particles per site, with $N=2m$. By contrast, quantum fluctuations always lead to corrections larger than the classical order parameter for the tripartite triangular lattice (with $N=3m$) or the bipartite honeycomb lattice (with $N=2m$) for more than one particle per site, $m>1$, making the presence of color very unlikely except maybe for $m=2$ on the honeycomb lattice, for which the correction is only marginally larger than the classical order parameter.
