Large time nonlinear dynamics close to inhomogeneous stationary states of the Vlasov-HMF model

We consider the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model and symmetric perturbations of symmetric inhomogeneous stationary states that are naturally associated with a pendulum Hamiltonian flow. We first show the existence of families of such stationary states having compact support inside the separatrix region, constant value near the origin, and satisfying a linear stability (Penrose) criterion. We then describe the nonlinear dynamics of small compactly supported perturbations with finite regularity of this class of equilibria. More precisely, we prove that for large (but finite) times, in a modulated action-angle coordinate system the solution remains close to a modulated stationary state and that the magnetization of the perturbation satisfes decay estimates driven by the linear dynamics.

A splitting scheme for the wave maps equation at low regularity

We prove convergence of a filtered Lie splitting scheme for the wave maps equation with low regularity initial data in dimension 3. The convergence analysis is performed in discrete Bourgain spaces, as has proved fruitful for the low regularity analysis of the equation in the continuous setting. An important difficulty here is that the analysis of wave maps at low regularity requires the use of the null structure of the system, this structure thus has to be preserved at the discrete level to get an effective stable low regularity scheme. Since the null structure involves time derivatives, the scheme has to be designed carefully. The presence of time derivatives in the nonlinearity then constitutes the most significant source of numerical error. Nonetheless, we are able to prove convergence of the scheme for all subcritical initial data in $H^s$, $s>d/2$.

Singular traveling waves for the Euler-Poisson system

We consider the Euler-Poisson system for ions where the electrons are given by a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, and we investigate the existence of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves. More precisely, we first establish the existence of a smooth global branch of bifurcation emanating from a constant equilibrium. We then construct a singular traveling wave emerging as the limiting profile at the end of the global curve of bifurcation. Our analysis accommodates a wide class of pressure laws and provides a comprehensive characterization of both smooth and singular traveling waves. A central difficulty in this model arises from the exponential nonlinearity, induced by the nonlocal Poisson-Boltzmann equation, which prevents any explicit representation of the electron field in terms of the ion density. This poses significant obstacles compared to previous studies on related models, where such explicit formulas were crucial for global bifurcation arguments.

Well-posedness of the motion of a rigid body immersed in a compressible inviscid fluid

We consider a rigid body freely moving in a compressible inviscid fluid within a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. The fluid is thereby governed by the non necessarily isentropic compressible Euler equations, while the rigid body obeys the conservation of linear and angular momentum. This forms a coupled system comprising an ODE and the initial boundary value problem (IBVP) of a hyperbolic system with characteristic boundary in a moving domain, where the fluid velocity matches the solid velocity along the normal direction of the solid boundary. We establish the existence of a unique local classical solution to this coupled system. To construct the solution, we first perform a change of variables to reformulate the problem in a fixed spatial domain, and then analyze an approximate system with a non-characteristic boundary. For this nonlinear approximate system, we use the better regularity for the trace of the pressure on the boundary to contruct a solution by a fixed-point argument in which the fluid motion and the solid motion are updated in successive steps. We are then able to derive estimates independent of the regularization parameter and to pass to the limit by a strong compactness arguments.

Low regularity error estimates for the time integration of 2D NLS

A filtered Lie splitting scheme is proposed for the time integration of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. The scheme is analyzed in a framework of discrete Bourgain spaces, which allows us to consider initial data with low regularity; more precisely initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ with $s>0$. In this way, the usual stability restriction to smooth Sobolev spaces with index $s>1$ is overcome. Rates of convergence of order $τ^{s/2}$ in $L^2(\mathbb{T}^2)$ at this regularity level are proved. Numerical examples illustrate that these convergence results are sharp.

Low regularity full error estimates for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

For the numerical solution of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary conditions, a pseudospectral method in space combined with a filtered Lie splitting scheme in time is considered. This scheme is shown to converge even for initial data with very low regularity. In particular, for data in $H^s(\mathbb T^2)$, where $s>0$, convergence of order $\mathcal O(τ^{s/2}+N^{-s})$ is proved in $L^2$. Here $τ$ denotes the time step size and $N$ the number of Fourier modes considered. The proof of this result is carried out in an abstract framework of discrete Bourgain spaces, the final convergence result, however, is given in $L^2$. The stated convergence behavior is illustrated by several numerical examples.

Semiclassical limit of cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations for mixed states

In this work, we study the semiclassical limit of cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger equations for mixed states. We justify the limit to a singular Vlasov equation (in which the force field is proportional to the gradient of the density), for data with finite Sobolev regularity whose velocity profiles satisfy a quantum Penrose stability condition. This latter condition is always satisfied for small data (with a smallness condition independent of the semiclassical parameter) both in the focusing and the defocusing case, and for small perturbations of a large class of physically relevant examples in the defocusing case, such as local Maxwellian-like profiles.

Transverse asymptotic stability of line solitary waves for the Ionic Euler-Poisson system

We prove the linear and nonlinear asymptotic stability of small amplitude one-dimensional solitary waves submitted to small localized irrotational perturbations in the three dimensional Euler-Poisson system describing the dynamics of ions. In particular, in this regime, we obtain the existence of global smooth solutions and describe their asymptotic behavior.

Resonances and computations

The computation of time dynamics arising in nonlinear time-dependent partial differential equations is an ongoing challenge in numerical analysis, especially once roughness comes into play. Classical numerical schemes in general fail to resolve the oscillatory behaviour in the solution which leads to numerical instabilities and loss of convergence. Dispersive equations, e.g., nonlinear Schrödinger, Korteweg--de Vries and wave equations, thereby pose in particular a big problem as in contrast to the parabolic setting, no strong smoothing can be expected, i.e., if the initial data is rough, the solution stays rough which makes their approximation a delicate task. In this review we give an overview on a new numerical ansatz which aims to tackle the time dynamics of nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations even for very rough data. This is achieved by a resonance analysis and decorated tree formalism that draws its inpiration from the combinatorics used in the theory of regularity structures for solving singular SPDEs. One can hope to see this formalism applied in other contexts for dispersive PDEs and beyond.

Resonances as a computational tool

A large toolbox of numerical schemes for dispersive equations has been established, based on different discretization techniques such as discretizing the variation-of-constants formula (e.g., exponential integrators) or splitting the full equation into a series of simpler subproblems (e.g., splitting methods). In many situations these classical schemes allow a precise and efficient approximation. This, however, drastically changes whenever non-smooth phenomena enter the scene such as for problems at low regularity and high oscillations. Classical schemes fail to capture the oscillatory nature of the solution, and this may lead to severe instabilities and loss of convergence. In this article we review a new class of resonance-based schemes. The key idea in the construction of the new schemes is to tackle and deeply embed the underlying nonlinear structure of resonances into the numerical discretization. As in the continuous case, these terms are central to structure preservation and offer the new schemes strong properties at low regularity.

Linear Landau damping for the Vlasov-Maxwell system in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this work, we consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system, linearized around a spatially homogeneous equilibrium, set in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{R}^3$. The equilibrium is assumed to belong to a class of radial, smooth, rapidly decaying functions. Under appropriate conditions on the initial data, we prove algebraic decay (of dispersive nature) for the electromagnetic field. For the electric scalar potential, the leading behavior is driven by a dispersive wave packet with non-degenerate phase and compactly supported amplitude, while for the magnetic vector potential, it is driven by a wave packet whose phase behaves globally like the one of Klein-Gordon and the amplitude has unbounded support.

Transverse linear stability of one-dimensional solitary gravity water waves

In this paper, we establish the transverse linear asymptotic stability of one-dimensional small-amplitude solitary waves of the gravity water-waves system. More precisely, we show that the semigroup of the linearized operator about the solitary wave decays exponentially within a spectral subspace supplementary to the space generated by the spectral projection on continuous resonant modes. The key element of the proof is to establish suitable uniform resolvent estimates. To achieve this, we use different arguments depending on the size of the transverse frequencies. For high transverse frequencies, we use reductions based on pseudodifferential calculus, for intermediate ones, we use an energy-based approach relying on the design of various appropriate energy functionals for different regimes of longitudinal frequencies and for low frequencies, we use the KP-II approximation. As a corollary of our main result, we also get the spectral stability in the unweighted energy space.

Incompressible limit for the free surface Navier-Stokes system

We establish uniform regularity estimates with respect to the Mach number for the three-dimensional free surface compressible Navier-Stokes system in the case of slightly well-prepared initial data in the sense that the acoustic components like the divergence of the velocity field are of size $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon$ being the Mach number. These estimates allow us to justify the convergence towards the free surface incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the low Mach number limit. One of the main difficulties is the control of the regularity of the surface in presence of boundary layers with fast oscillations.

Uniform regularity for the compressible Navier-Stokes system with low Mach number in bounded domains

We establish uniform with respect to the Mach number regularity estimates for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in smooth domains with Navier-slip condition on the boundary in the general case of ill-prepared initial data. To match the boundary layer effects due to the fast oscillations and the ill-prepared initial data assumption, we prove uniform estimates in an anisotropic functional framework with only one normal derivative close to the boundary. This allows to prove the local existence of a strong solution on a time interval independent of the Mach number and to justify the incompressible limit through a simple compactness argument.

Time integrators for dispersive equations in the long wave regime

We introduce a novel class of time integrators for dispersive equations which allow us to reproduce the dynamics of the solution from the classical $ \varepsilon = 1$ up to long wave limit regime $ \varepsilon \ll 1 $ on the natural time scale of the PDE $t= \mathcal{O}(\frac{1}{\varepsilon})$. Most notably our new schemes converge with rates at order $τ\varepsilon$ over long times $t= \frac{1}{\varepsilon}$.

On Linear Damping Around Inhomogeneous Stationary States of the Vlasov-HMF Model

We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.

Convergence error estimates at low regularity for time discretizations of KdV

We consider various filtered time discretizations of the periodic Korteweg--de Vries equation: a filtered exponential integrator, a filtered Lie splitting scheme as well as a filtered resonance based discretisation and establish convergence error estimates at low regularity. Our analysis is based on discrete Bourgain spaces and allows to prove convergence in $L^2$ for rough data $u_{0} \in H^s,$ $s>0$ with an explicit convergence rate.

A general framework of low regularity integrators

We introduce a new general framework for the approximation of evolution equations at low regularity and develop a new class of schemes for a wide range of equations under lower regularity assumptions than classical methods require. In contrast to previous works, our new framework allows a unified practical formulation and the construction of the new schemes does not rely on any Fourier based expansions. This allows us for the first time to overcome the severe restriction to periodic boundary conditions, to embed in the same framework parabolic and dispersive equations and to handle nonlinearities that are not polynomial. In particular, as our new formalism does no longer require periodicity of the problem, one may couple the new time discretisation technique not only with spectral methods, but rather with various spatial discretisations. We apply our general theory to the time discretization of various concrete PDEs, such as the nonlinear heat equation, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, the half wave and Klein--Gordon equations, set in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \leq 3$ with suitable boundary conditions.
