Error estimates at low regularity of splitting schemes for NLS

We study a filtered Lie splitting scheme for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We establish error estimates at low regularity by using discrete Bourgain spaces. This allows us to handle data in $H^s$ with $0 1/2$ . More precisely, we prove convergence rates of order $τ^{s/2}$ in $L^2$ at this level of regularity.

Fourier integrator for periodic NLS: low regularity estimates via discrete Bourgain spaces

In this paper, we propose a new scheme for the integration of the periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation and rigorously prove convergence rates at low regularity. The new integrator has decisive advantages over standard schemes at low regularity. In particular, it is able to handle initial data in $H^s$ for $0 < s\le 1$. The key feature of the integrator is its ability to distinguish between low and medium frequencies in the solution and to treat them differently in the discretization. This new approach requires a well-balanced filtering procedure which is carried out in Fourier space. The convergence analysis of the proposed scheme is based on discrete (in time) Bourgain space estimates which we introduce in this paper. A numerical experiment illustrates the superiority of the new integrator over standard schemes for rough initial data.

Stability of equilibria uniformly in the inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system

We prove a stability result of constant equilibria for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system uniform in the inviscid limit. We allow the initial density to be close to a constant and the potential part of the initial velocity to be small independently of the rescaled viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ while the incompressible part of the initial velocity is assumed to be small compared to $\varepsilon$. We then get a unique global smooth solution. We also prove a uniform in $\varepsilon$ time decay rate for these solutions. Our approach allows to combine the parabolic energy estimates that are efficient for the viscous equation at $\varepsilon$ fixed and the dispersive techniques (dispersive estimates and normal form transformation) that are useful for the inviscid irrotational system.

Asymptotic stability of equilibria for screened Vlasov-Poisson systems via pointwise dispersive estimates

We revisit the proof of Landau damping near stable homogenous equilibria of Vlasov-Poisson systems with screened interactions in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for $d\geq3$) that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi and Mouhot. Our proof follows a Lagrangian approach and relies on precise pointwise in time dispersive estimates in the physical space for the linearized problem that should be of independent interest. This allows to cut down the smoothness of the initial data required in Bedrossian at al. (roughly, we only need Lipschitz regularity). Moreover, the time decay estimates we prove are essentially sharp, being the same as those for free transport, up to a logarithmic correction.

Error estimates of a Fourier integrator for the cubic Schrödinger equation at low regularity

We present a new filtered low-regularity Fourier integrator for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation based on recent time discretization and filtering techniques. For this new scheme, we perform a rigorous error analysis and establish better convergence rates at low regularity than known for classical schemes in the literature so far. In our error estimates, we combine the better local error properties of the new scheme with a stability analysis based on general discrete Strichartz-type estimates. The latter allow us to handle a much rougher class of solutions as the error analysis can be carried out directly at the level of $L^2$ compared to classical results \black in dimension $d$, \black which are limited to higher-order (sufficiently smooth) Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s>d/2$. In particular, we are able to establish a global error estimate in $L^2$ for $H^1$ solutions which is roughly of order $τ^{ {1\over 2} + { 5-d \over 12} }$ in dimension $d \leq 3$ ($τ$ denoting the time discretization parameter). This breaks the "natural order barrier" of $τ^{1/2}$ for $H^1$ solutions which holds for classical numerical schemes (even in combination with suitable filter functions).

Error estimates of finite difference schemes for the Korteweg-de Vries equation

This article deals with the numerical analysis of the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation with a finite difference scheme. We consider the Rusanov scheme for the hyperbolic flux term and a 4-points $θ$-scheme for the dispersive term. We prove the convergence under a hyperbolic Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition when $θ\geq \frac{1}{2}$ and under an "Airy" Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition when $θ<\frac{1}{2}$. More precisely, we get the first order convergence rate for strong solutions in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R})$, $s \geq 6$ and extend this result to the non-smooth case for initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R})$, with $s\geq \frac{3}{4}$ , to the price of a loss in the convergence order. Numerical simulations indicate that the orders of convergence may be optimal when $s\geq3$.

Linear inviscid damping and enhanced viscous dissipation of shear flows by using the conjugate operator method

We study the large time behavior of solutions to two-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations linearized about shear flows of the mixing layer type in the unbounded channel $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$. Under a simple spectral stability assumption on a self-adjoint operator, we prove a local form of the linear inviscid damping that is uniform with respect to small viscosity. We also prove a local form of the enhanced viscous dissipation that takes place at times of order $ν^{-1/3}$, $ν$ being the small viscosity. To prove these results, we use a Hamiltonian approach, following the conjugate operator method developed in the study of Schrödinger operators, combined with a hypocoercivity argument to handle the viscous case.

Trigonometric integrators for quasilinear wave equations

Trigonometric time integrators are introduced as a class of explicit numerical methods for quasilinear wave equations. Second-order convergence for the semi-discretization in time with these integrators is shown for a sufficiently regular exact solution. The time integrators are also combined with a Fourier spectral method into a fully discrete scheme, for which error bounds are provided without requiring any CFL-type coupling of the discretization parameters. The proofs of the error bounds are based on energy techniques and on the semiclassical Gårding inequality.

The vanishing viscosity limit for 2D Navier-Stokes in a rough domain

We study the high Reynolds number limit of a viscous fluid in the presence of a rough boundary. We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary condition, in a domain whose boundaries exhibit fast oscillations in the form $x_2 = \varepsilon^{1+α} η(x_1/\varepsilon)$, $α> 0$. Under suitable conditions on the oscillating parameter $\varepsilon$ and the viscosity $ν$, we show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing limit of both $ν$ and $\varepsilon$. The main issue is that the curvature of the boundary is unbounded as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$, which precludes the use of standard methods to obtain the inviscid limit. Our approach is to first construct an accurate boundary layer approximation to the Euler solution in the rough domain, and then to derive stability estimates for this approximation under the Navier-Stokes evolution.

On numerical Landau damping for splitting methods applied to the Vlasov-HMF model

We consider time discretizations of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) equation based on splitting methods between the linear and non-linear parts. We consider solutions starting in a small Sobolev neighborhood of a spatially homogeneous state satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We prove that the numerical solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, which implies a nonlinear Landau damping effect with polynomial rate of damping. Moreover, we prove that the modified state is close to the continuous one and provide error estimates with respect to the time stepsize.

Quasineutral limit for Vlasov-Poisson with Penrose stable data

We study the quasineutral limit of a Vlasov-Poisson system that describes the dynamics of ions in a plasma. We handle data with Sobolev regularity under the sharp assumption that the profile of the initial data in the velocity variable satisfies a Penrose stability condition. As a by-product of our analysis, we obtain a well-posedness theory for the limit equation (which is a Vlasov equation with Dirac distribution as interaction kernel) for such data.

Asymptotic stability of solitons for mKdV

We prove a full asymptotic stability result for solitary wave solutions of the mKdV equation. We consider small perturbations of solitary waves with polynomial decay at infinity and prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem evolving from such data tend uniformly, on the real line, to another solitary wave as time goes to infinity. We describe precisely the asymptotics of the perturbation behind the solitary wave showing that it satisfies a nonlinearly modified scattering behavior. This latter part of our result relies on a precise study of the asymptotic behavior of small solutions of the mKdV equation.

Quasineutral limit of the Euler-Poisson system for ions in a domain with boundaries II

In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.

Uniform regularity and vanishing viscosity limit for the free surface Navier-Stokes equations

We study the inviscid limit of the free boundary Navier-Stokes equations. We prove the existence of solutions on a uniform time interval by using a suitable functional framework based on Sobolev conormal spaces. This allows us to use a strong compactness argument to justify the inviscid limit. Our approach does not rely on the justification of asymptotic expansions. In particular, we get a new existence result for the Euler equations with free surface from the one for Navier-Stokes.

Quasineutral limit of the Euler-Poisson system for ions in a domain with boundaries

We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.

Stability and instability of the KdV solitary wave under the KP-I flow

We consider the KP-I and gKP-I equations in $\mathbb{R}\times (\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})$. We prove that the KdV soliton with subcritical speed $0 c^*$, in the spirit of the work by Duyckaerts and Merle \cite{DM}, we sharpen our previous instability result and construct a global solution which is different from the solitary wave and its translates and which converges to the solitary wave as time goes to infinity. This last result also holds for the gKP-I equation.
