Wavelet resolution and Sobolev regularity of Calderón-Zygmund operators on domains

Given a uniform domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^d$, we resolve each element of a suitably defined class of Calderòn-Zygmund (CZ) singular integrals on $Ω$ as the linear combination of Triebel wavelet operators and paraproduct terms. Our resolution formula entails a testing type characterization, loosely in the vein of the David-Journé theorem, of weighted Sobolev space bounds in terms of Triebel-Lizorkin and tree Carleson measure norms of the paraproduct symbols, which is new already in the case $Ω={\mathbb R}^d$ with Lebesgue measure. Our characterization covers the case of compressions to $Ω$ of global CZ operators, extending and sharpening past results of Prats and Tolsa for the convolution case. The weighted estimates we obtain, particularized to the Beurling operator on a Lipschitz domain with normal to the boundary in the corresponding sharp Besov class, may be used to deduce quantitative estimates for quasiregular mappings with dilatation in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω)$, $p>2$.

The Planar Coleman--Gurtin model with Beltrami conductivity

This article addresses the planar Coleman--Gurtin heat equation with memory on a bounded domain, with rough anisotropic diffusion $A_μ$, typical of heterogeneous or composite media and encoded by a Beltrami coefficient $μ\in L^\infty(Ω)$ satisfying $\|μ\|_{\infty}<1$. First, under no additional smoothness assumptions on $μ$, solutions with $H^1_0(Ω)$-based initial data enter a time-averaged $L^\infty(Ω)$ regime, and instantaneously regularize into the second-order graph space $D(A_μ)$. Assuming in addition $μ\in W^{1,2}(Ω)$, this regularization upgrades to $W^{2,p}(Ω)$ for every $1<p<2$, and we construct regular global and exponential attractors of finite fractal dimension, for both the $L^2(Ω)$ and $H^1_0(Ω)$-based dynamics. The proof combines the instantaneous smoothing method of Chekroun, Di Plinio, Glatt-Holtz and Pata with maximal parabolic regularity for divergence-form operators with measurable coefficients, and with planar quasiconformal Beltrami estimates recently obtained in work by Green, Wick and the author.

Quantitative Sobolev regularity of quasiregular maps

We quantify the Sobolev space norm of the Beltrami resolvent $(I- μ\mathcal{B})^{-1}$, where $\mathcal B$ is the Beurling-Ahlfors transform, in terms of the corresponding Sobolev space norm of the dilatation $μ$ in the critical and supercritical ranges. Our estimate entails as a consequence quantitative self-improvement inequalities of Caccioppoli type for quasiregular distributions with dilatations in $W^{1,p}$, $p \geq 2$. Our proof strategy is then adapted to yield quantitative estimates for the resolvent $(I-μ{\mathcal B}_Ω)^{-1}$ of the Beltrami equation on a sufficiently regular domain $Ω$, with $μ\in W^{1,p}(Ω)$. Here, ${\mathcal B}_Ω$ is the compression of ${\mathcal B}$ to a domain $Ω$. Our proofs do not rely on the compactness or commutator arguments previously employed in related literature. Instead, they leverage the weighted Sobolev estimates for compressions of Calderón-Zygmund operators to domains, recently obtained by the authors, to extend the Astala-Iwaniec-Saksman technique to higher regularities.

Pointwise localization and sharp weighted bounds for Rubio de Francia square functions

Let $H_ωf$ be the Fourier restriction of $f\in L^2(\mathbb{R})$ to an interval $ω\subset \mathbb{R}$. If $Ω$ is an arbitrary collection of pairwise disjoint intervals, the square function of $\{H_ωf: ω\in Ω\}$ is termed the Rubio de Francia square function $T^Ω$. This article proves a pointwise bound for $T^Ωf$ by a sparse operator involving local $L^2$-averages. A pointwise bound for the smooth version of $T^Ω$ by a sparse square function is also proved. These pointwise localization principles lead to quantified $L^p(w)$, $p>2$ and weak $L^p(w)$, $p\geq 2$ norm inequalities for $T^Ω$. In particular, the obtained weak $L^p(w)$ norm bounds are new for $p\geq 2$ and sharp for $p>2$. The proofs rely on sparse bounds for abstract balayages of Carleson sequences, local orthogonality and very elementary time-frequency analysis techniques. The paper also contains two results related to the outstanding conjecture that $T^Ω$ is bounded on $L^2(w)$ if and only if $w\in A_1$. The conjecture is verified for radially decreasing even $A_1$ weights, and in full generality for the Walsh group analogue of $T^Ω$.

Singular multipliers on multiscale Zygmund sets

Given an Orlicz space $ L^2 \subseteq X \subseteq L^1$ on $[0,1]$, with submultiplicative Young function ${\mathrm{Y}_X}$, we fully characterize the closed null sets $Ξ$ of the real line with the property that Hörmander-Mihlin or Marcinkiewicz multiplier operators $\mathrm{T}_m$ with singularities on $Ξ$ obey weak-type endpoint modular bounds on $X$ of the type \[ \left|\left\{x\in \mathbb R : |\mathrm{T}_m f(x)| >λ\right\}\right| \leq C \int_{\mathbb R} \mathrm{Y}_X \left(\frac{|f|}λ\right), \qquad \forall λ>0. \] These sets $Ξ$ are exactly those enjoying a scale invariant version of Zygmund's $(L\sqrt{\log L},{L^2})$ improving inequality with $X$ in place of the former space, which is termed multiscale Zygmund property. Our methods actually yield sparse and quantitative weighted estimates for the Fourier multipliers $\mathrm{T}_m$ and for the corresponding square functions. In particular, our framework covers the case of singular sets $Ξ$ of finite lacunary order and thus leads to modular and quantitative weighted versions of the classical endpoint theorems of Tao and Wright for Marcinkiewicz multipliers. Moreover, we obtain a pointwise sparse bound for the Marcinkiewicz square function answering a recent conjecture of Lerner. On the other hand, examples of non-lacunary sets enjoying the multiscale Zygmund property for each $X=L^p$, $1<p\leq 2$ are also covered. The main new ingredient in the proofs is a multi-frequency, multi-scale projection lemma based on Gabor expansion, and possessing independent interest.

Multilinear paraproducts on Sobolev spaces

Paraproducts are a special subclass of the multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators, and their Lebesgue space estimates in the full multilinear range are characterized by the $\mathrm{BMO}$ norm of the symbol. In this note, we characterize the Sobolev space boundedness properties of multilinear paraproducts in terms of a suitable family of Triebel-Lizorkin type norms of the symbol. Coupled with a suitable wavelet representation theorem, this characterization leads to a new family of Sobolev space $T(1)$-type theorems for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators.

Singular integrals along variable codimension one subspaces

This article deals with maximal operators on ${\mathbb R}^n$ formed by taking arbitrary rotations of tensor products of a $d$-dimensional Hörmander--Mihlin multiplier with the identity in $n-d$ coordinates, in the particular codimension 1 case $d=n-1$. These maximal operators are naturally connected to differentiation problems and maximally modulated singular integrals such as Sjölin's generalization of Carleson's maximal operator. Our main result, a weak-type $L^{2}({\mathbb R}^n)$-estimate on band-limited functions, leads to several corollaries. The first is a sharp $L^2({\mathbb R}^n)$ estimate for the maximal operator restricted to a finite set of rotations in terms of the cardinality of the finite set. The second is a version of the Carleson--Sjölin theorem. In addition, we obtain that functions in the Besov space $B_{p,1}^0({\mathbb R}^n)$, $2\le p <\infty$, may be recovered from their averages along a measurable choice of codimension $1$ subspaces, a form of Zygmund's conjecture in general dimension $n$.

Bilinear Wavelet Representation of Calderón-Zygmund Forms

We represent a bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operator at a given smoothness level as a finite sum of cancellative, complexity zero operators, involving smooth wavelet forms, and continuous paraproduct forms. This representation results in a sparse $T(1)$-type bound, which in turn yields directly new sharp weighted bilinear estimates on Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces. Moreover, we apply the representation theorem to study fractional differentiation of bilinear operators, establishing Leibniz-type rules in weighted Sobolev spaces which are new even in the simplest case of the pointwise product.

The weak-type Carleson theorem via wave packet estimates

We prove that the weak-$L^{p}$ norms, and in fact the sparse $(p,1)$-norms, of the Carleson maximal partial Fourier sum operator are $\lesssim (p-1)^{-1}$ as $p\to 1^+$. This is an improvement on the Carleson-Hunt theorem, where the same upper bound on the growth order is obtained for the restricted weak-$L^p$ type norm, and which was the strongest quantitative bound prior to our result. Furthermore, our sparse $(p,1)$-norms bound imply new and stronger results at the endpoint $p=1$. In particular, we obtain that the Fourier series of functions from the weighted Arias de Reyna space $ QA_{\infty}(w) $, which contains the weighted Antonov space $L\log L\log\log\log L(\mathbb T; w)$, converge almost everywhere whenever $w\in A_1$. This is an extension of the results of Antonov and Arias De Reyna, where $w$ must be Lebesgue measure. The backbone of our treatment is a new, sharply quantified near-$L^1$ Carleson embedding theorem for the modulation-invariant wave packet transform. The proof of the Carleson embedding relies on a newly developed smooth multi-frequency decomposition which, near the endpoint $p=1$, outperforms the abstract Hilbert space approach of past works, including the seminal one by Nazarov, Oberlin and Thiele. As a further example of application, we obtain a quantified version of the family of sparse bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transforms due to Culiuc, Ou and the first author.

Directional square functions

Quantitative formulations of Fefferman's counterexample for the ball multiplier are naturally linked to square function estimates for conical and directional multipliers. In this article we develop a novel framework for these square function estimates, based on a directional embedding theorem for Carleson sequences and multi-parameter time-frequency analysis techniques. As applications we prove sharp or quantified bounds for Rubio de Francia type square functions of conical multipliers and of multipliers adapted to rectangles pointing along $N$ directions. A suitable combination of these estimates yields a new and currently best-known logarithmic bound for the Fourier restriction to an $N$-gon, improving on previous results of A. Cordoba. Our directional Carleson embedding extends to the weighted setting, yielding previously unknown weighted estimates for directional maximal functions and singular integrals.

Maximal subspace averages

We study maximal operators associated to singular averages along finite subsets $Σ$ of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(d,n)$ of $d$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb R^n$. The well studied $d=1$ case corresponds to the the directional maximal function with respect to arbitrary finite subsets of $\mathrm{Gr}(1,n)=\mathbb S^{n-1}$. We provide a systematic study of all cases $1\leq d 1$. In this context, we prove the best possible $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$-bound for the $(d,n)$-Nikodym maximal function for all combinations of dimension and codimension. Our estimates rely on Fourier analytic almost orthogonality principles, combined with polynomial partitioning, but we also use spatial analysis based on the precise calculation of intersections of $d$-dimensional plates in $\mathbb R^n$.

A metric approach to sparse domination

We present a general approach to sparse domination based on single-scale $L^p$-improving as a key property. The results are formulated in the setting of metric spaces of homogeneous type and avoid completely the use of dyadic-probabilistic techniques as well as of Christ-Hytönen-Kairema cubes. Among the applications of our general principle, we recover sparse domination of Dini-continuous Calderón-Zygmund kernels on spaces of homogeneous type, we prove a family of sparse bounds for maximal functions associated to convolutions with measures exhibiting Fourier decay, and we deduce sparse estimates for Radon transforms along polynomial submanifolds of $\mathbb R^n$.

Singular integrals along lacunary directions in $\mathbb{R}^n$

A recent result by Parcet and Rogers is that finite order lacunarity characterizes the boundedness of the maximal averaging operator associated to an infinite set of directions in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Their proof is based on geometric-combinatorial coverings of fat hyperplanes by two-dimensional wedges. Seminal results by Nagel-Stein-Wainger relied on geometric coverings of n-dimensional nature. In this article we find the sharp cardinality estimate for singular integrals along finite subsets of finite order lacunary sets in all dimensions. Previous results only covered the special case of the directional Hilbert transform in dimensions two and three. The proof is new in all dimensions and relies, among other ideas, on a precise covering of the n-dimensional Nagel-Stein-Wainger cone by two-dimensional Parcet-Rogers wedges.

Wavelet Representation of Singular Integral Operators

This article develops a novel approach to the representation of singular integral operators of Calderón-Zygmund type in terms of continuous model operators, in both the classical and the bi-parametric setting. The representation is realized as a finite sum of averages of wavelet projections of either cancellative or noncancellative type, which are themselves Calderón-Zygmund operators. Both properties are out of reach for the established dyadic-probabilistic technique. Unlike their dyadic counterparts, our representation reflects the additional kernel smoothness of the operator being analyzed. Our representation formulas lead naturally to a new family of $T(1)$ theorems on weighted Sobolev spaces whose smoothness index is naturally related to kernel smoothness. In the one parameter case, we obtain the Sobolev space analogue of the $A_2$ theorem; that is, sharp dependence of the Sobolev norm of $T$ on the weight characteristic is obtained in the full range of exponents. In the bi-parametric setting, where local average sparse domination is not generally available, we obtain quantitative $A_p$ estimates which are best known, and sharp in the range $\max\{p,p'\}\geq 3$ for the fully cancellative case.

Maximal directional operators along algebraic varieties

We establish the sharp growth order, up to epsilon losses, of the $L^2$-norm of the maximal directional averaging operator along a finite subset $V$ of a polynomial variety of arbitrary dimension $m$, in terms of cardinality. This is an extension of the works by Córdoba, for one-dimensional manifolds, Katz for the circle in two dimensions, and Demeter for the 2-sphere. For the case of directions on the two-dimensional sphere we improve by a factor of $\sqrt{\log N}$ on the best known bound, due to Demeter, and we obtain a sharp estimate for our model operator. Our results imply new $L^2$-estimates for Kakeya-type maximal functions with tubes pointing along polynomial directions. Our proof technique is novel and in particular incorporates an iterated scheme of polynomial partitioning on varieties adapted to directional operators, in the vein of Guth, Guth-Katz, and Zahl.

Multilinear singular integrals on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces

We prove $L^p$ bounds for the extensions of standard multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators to tuples of UMD spaces tied by a natural product structure. This can, for instance, mean the pointwise product in UMD function lattices, or the composition of operators in the Schatten-von Neumann subclass of the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. We do not require additional assumptions beyond UMD on each space - in contrast to previous results, we e.g. show that the Rademacher maximal function property is not necessary. The obtained generality allows for novel applications. For instance, we prove new versions of fractional Leibniz rules via our results concerning the boundedness of multilinear singular integrals in non-commutative $L^p$ spaces. Our proof techniques combine a novel scheme of induction on the multilinearity index with dyadic-probabilistic techniques in the UMD space setting.

Multilinear operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund theory

We develop a general theory of multilinear singular integrals with operator-valued kernels, acting on tuples of UMD Banach spaces. This, in particular, involves investigating multilinear variants of the $\mathcal R$-boundedness condition naturally arising in operator-valued theory. We proceed by establishing a suitable representation of multilinear, operator-valued singular integrals in terms of operator-valued dyadic shifts and paraproducts, and studying the boundedness of these model operators via dyadic-probabilistic Banach space-valued analysis. In the bilinear case, we obtain a $T(1)$-type theorem without any additional assumptions on the Banach spaces other than the necessary UMD. Higher degrees of multilinearity are tackled via a new formulation of the Rademacher maximal function (RMF) condition. In addition to the natural UMD lattice cases, our RMF condition covers suitable tuples of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces. We employ our operator-valued theory to obtain new multilinear, multi-parameter, operator-valued theorems in the natural setting of UMD spaces with property $α$.

Directional square functions and a sharp Meyer lemma

Quantitative formulations of Fefferman's counterexample for the ball multiplier are naturally linked to square function and vector-valued estimates for directional singular integrals. The latter are usually referred to as Meyer-type lemmas and are traditionally attacked by combining weighted inequalities with sharp estimates for maximal directional averaging operators. This classical approach fails to give sharp bounds. In this article we develop a novel framework for square function estimates, based on directional Carleson embedding theorems and multi-parameter time-frequency analysis, which overcomes the limitations of weighted theory. In particular we prove the sharp form of Meyer's lemma, namely a sharp operator norm bound for vector-valued directional singular integrals, in both one and two parameters, in terms of the cardinality of the given set of directions. Our sharp Meyer lemma implies an improved quantification of the reverse square function estimate for tangential $δ\times δ^2$-caps on $\mathbb S^1$. We also prove sharp square function estimates for conical and radial multipliers. A suitable combination of these estimates yields a new and currently best known bound for the Fourier restriction to a $N$-gon, improving on previous results of A. Córdoba.
