Multilinear operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund theory

We develop a general theory of multilinear singular integrals with operator-valued kernels, acting on tuples of UMD Banach spaces. This, in particular, involves investigating multilinear variants of the $\mathcal R$-boundedness condition naturally arising in operator-valued theory. We proceed by establishing a suitable representation of multilinear, operator-valued singular integrals in terms of operator-valued dyadic shifts and paraproducts, and studying the boundedness of these model operators via dyadic-probabilistic Banach space-valued analysis. In the bilinear case, we obtain a $T(1)$-type theorem without any additional assumptions on the Banach spaces other than the necessary UMD. Higher degrees of multilinearity are tackled via a new formulation of the Rademacher maximal function (RMF) condition. In addition to the natural UMD lattice cases, our RMF condition covers suitable tuples of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces. We employ our operator-valued theory to obtain new multilinear, multi-parameter, operator-valued theorems in the natural setting of UMD spaces with property $α$.

Directional square functions and a sharp Meyer lemma

Quantitative formulations of Fefferman's counterexample for the ball multiplier are naturally linked to square function and vector-valued estimates for directional singular integrals. The latter are usually referred to as Meyer-type lemmas and are traditionally attacked by combining weighted inequalities with sharp estimates for maximal directional averaging operators. This classical approach fails to give sharp bounds. In this article we develop a novel framework for square function estimates, based on directional Carleson embedding theorems and multi-parameter time-frequency analysis, which overcomes the limitations of weighted theory. In particular we prove the sharp form of Meyer's lemma, namely a sharp operator norm bound for vector-valued directional singular integrals, in both one and two parameters, in terms of the cardinality of the given set of directions. Our sharp Meyer lemma implies an improved quantification of the reverse square function estimate for tangential $δ\times δ^2$-caps on $\mathbb S^1$. We also prove sharp square function estimates for conical and radial multipliers. A suitable combination of these estimates yields a new and currently best known bound for the Fourier restriction to a $N$-gon, improving on previous results of A. Córdoba.

Banach-valued multilinear singular integrals with modulation invariance

We prove that the class of trilinear multiplier forms with singularity over a one dimensional subspace, including the bilinear Hilbert transform, admit bounded $L^p$-extension to triples of intermediate $\mathrm{UMD}$ spaces. No other assumption, for instance of Rademacher maximal function type, is made on the triple of $\mathrm{UMD}$ spaces. Among the novelties in our analysis is an extension of the phase-space projection technique to the $\mathrm{UMD}$-valued setting. This is then employed to obtain appropriate single tree estimates by appealing to the $\mathrm{UMD}$-valued bound for bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators recently obtained by the same authors.

Endpoint sparse bounds for Walsh-Fourier multipliers of Marcinkiewicz type

We prove endpoint-type sparse bounds for Walsh-Fourier Marcinkiewicz multipliers and Littlewood-Paley square functions. These results are motivated by conjectures of Lerner in the Fourier setting. As a corollary, we obtain novel quantitative weighted norm inequalities for these operators. Among these, we establish the sharp growth rate of the $L^p$ weighted operator norm in terms of the $A_p$ characteristic in the full range $1<p<\infty$ for Walsh-Littlewood-Paley square functions, and a restricted range for Marcinkiewicz multipliers. Zygmund's $L{(\log L)^{\frac12}}$ inequality is the core of our lacunary multi-frequency projection proof. We use the Walsh setting to avoid extra complications in the arguments.

On the maximal directional Hilbert transform in three dimensions

We establish the sharp growth rate, in terms of cardinality, of the $L^p$ norms of the maximal Hilbert transform $H_Ω$ along finite subsets of a finite order lacunary set of directions $Ω\subset \mathbb R^3$, answering a question of Parcet and Rogers in dimension $n=3$. Our result is the first sharp estimate for maximal directional singular integrals in dimensions greater than 2. The proof relies on a representation of the maximal directional Hilbert transform in terms of a model maximal operator associated to compositions of two-dimensional angular multipliers, as well as on the usage of weighted norm inequalities, and their extrapolation, in the directional setting.

A sparse estimate for multisublinear forms involving vector-valued maximal functions

We prove a sparse bound for the $m$-sublinear form associated to vector-valued maximal functions of Fefferman-Stein type. As a consequence, we show that the sparse bounds of multisublinear operators are preserved via $\ell^r$-valued extension. This observation is in turn used to deduce vector-valued, multilinear weighted norm inequalities for multisublinear operators obeying sparse bounds, which are out of reach for the extrapolation theory recently developed by Cruz-Uribe and Martell. As an example, vector-valued multilinear weighted inequalities for bilinear Hilbert transforms are deduced from the scalar sparse domination theorem of the authors.

Sparse bounds for maximal rough singular integrals via the Fourier transform

We prove that the class of convolution-type kernels satisfying suitable decay conditions of the Fourier transform, appearing in the works of Christ, Christ-Rubio de Francia, and Duoandikoetxea-Rubio de Francia gives rise to maximally truncated singular integrals satisfying a sparse bound by $(1+\varepsilon,1+\varepsilon)$-averages for all $\varepsilon>0$, with linear growth in $\varepsilon^{-1}$. This is an extension of the sparse domination principle by Conde-Alonso, Culiuc, Ou and the first author to maximally truncated singular integrals. Our results cover the rough homogeneous singular integrals $T_Ω$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with bounded angular part $Ω$ having vanishing integral on the $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere. Consequences of our sparse bound include novel quantitative weighted norm estimates as well as Fefferman-Stein type inequalities. In particular, we obtain that the $L^2(w)$ norm of the maximal truncation of $T_Ω$ depends quadratically on the Muckenhoupt constant $[w]_{A_2}$, extending a result originally by Roncal, Tapiola and the second author. A suitable convex-body valued version of the sparse bound is also deduced and employed towards novel matrix weighted norm inequalities for the maximal truncated rough homogeneous singular integrals. Our result is quantitative, but even the qualitative statement is new, and the present approach via sparse domination is the only one currently known for the matrix weighted bounds of this class of operators.

Square functions for bi-Lipschitz maps and directional operators

First we prove a Littlewood-Paley diagonalization result for bi-Lipschitz perturbations of the identity map on the real line. This result entails a number of corollaries for the Hilbert transform along lines and monomial curves in the plane. Second, we prove a square function bound for a single scale directional operator. As a corollary we give a new proof of part of a theorem of Katz on direction fields with finitely many directions.

A sharp estimate for the Hilbert transform along finite order lacunary sets of directions

Let $D$ be a nonnegative integer and ${\mathbfΘ}\subset S^1$ be a lacunary set of directions of order $D$. We show that the $L^p$ norms, $1<p<\infty$, of the maximal directional Hilbert transform in the plane $$ H_{\mathbfΘ} f(x):= \sup_{v\in {\mathbfΘ}} \Big|\mathrm{p.v.}\int_{\mathbb R }f(x+tv)\frac{\mathrm{d} t}{t}\Big|, \qquad x \in {\mathbb R}^2, $$ are comparable to $(\log\#{\mathbfΘ})^\frac{1}{2}$. For vector fields $\mathsf{v}_D$ with range in a lacunary set of of order $D$ and generated using suitable combinations of truncations of Lipschitz functions, we prove that the truncated Hilbert transform along the vector field $\mathsf{v}_D$, $$ H_{\mathsf{v}_D,1} f(x):= \mathrm{p.v.} \int_{ |t| \leq 1 } f(x+t\mathsf{v}_D(x)) \,\frac{\mathrm{d} t}{t}, $$ is $L^p$-bounded for all $1<p<\infty$. These results extend previous bounds of the first author with Demeter, and of Guo and Thiele.

A sparse domination principle for rough singular integrals

We prove that bilinear forms associated to the rough homogeneous singular integrals $T_Ω$ on $\mathbb R^d$, where the angular part $Ω\in L^q (S^{d-1})$ has vanishing average and $1<q\leq \infty$, and to Bochner-Riesz means at the critical index in $\mathbb R^d$ are dominated by sparse forms involving $(1,p)$ averages. This domination is stronger than the weak-$L^1$ estimates for $T_Ω$ and for Bochner-Riesz means, respectively due to Seeger and Christ. Furthermore, our domination theorems entail as a corollary new sharp quantitative $A_p$-weighted estimates for Bochner-Riesz means and for homogeneous singular integrals with unbounded angular part, extending previous results of Hytönen-Roncal-Tapiola for $T_Ω$. Our results follow from a new abstract sparse domination principle which does not rely on weak endpoint estimates for maximal truncations.

Positive sparse domination of variational Carleson operators

Due to its nonlocal nature, the $r$-variation norm Carleson operator $C_r$ does not yield to the sparse domination techniques of Lerner, Di Plinio and Lerner, Lacey. We overcome this difficulty and prove that the dual form to $C_r$ can be dominated by a positive sparse form involving $L^p$ averages. Our result strengthens the $L^p$ estimates by Oberlin et. al. As a corollary, we obtain quantitative weighted norm inequalities improving on previous results by Do and Lacey. Our proof relies on the localized outer $L^p$-embeddings of Di Plinio-Ou and Uraltsev.

Banach-valued multilinear singular integrals

We develop a general framework for the analysis of operator-valued multilinear multipliers acting on Banach-valued functions. Our main result is a Coifman-Meyer type theorem for operator-valued multilinear multipliers acting on suitable tuples of UMD spaces. A concrete case of our theorem is a multilinear generalization of Weis' operator-valued Hörmander-Mihlin linear multiplier theorem. Furthermore, we derive from our main result a wide range of mixed $L^p$-norm estimates for multi-parameter multilinear paraproducts, leading to a novel mixed norm version of the partial fractional Leibniz rules of Muscalu et. al.. Our approach works just as well for the more singular tensor products of a one-parameter Coifman-Meyer multiplier with a bilinear Hilbert transform, extending results of Silva. We also prove several operator-valued $T (1)$-type theorems both in one parameter, and of multi-para\-meter, mixed-norm type. A distinguishing feature of our $T(1)$ theorems is that the usual explicit assumptions on the distributional kernel of $T$ are replaced with testing-type conditions. Our proofs rely on a newly developed Banach-valued version of the outer $L^p$ space theory of Do and Thiele.

Uniform sparse domination of singular integrals via dyadic shifts

Using the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, we give a novel and simple proof that $L^2$ bounded dyadic shifts admit a domination by positive sparse forms with linear growth in the complexity of the shift. Our estimate, coupled with Hytönen's dyadic representation theorem, upgrades to a positive sparse domination of the class $\mathcal U$ of singular integrals satisfying the assumptions of the classical $T(1)$-theorem of David and Journé, with logarithmic-Dini type smoothness of the integral kernel. Furthermore, our proof extends rather easily to the $\mathbb R^n$-valued case, yielding as a corollary the operator norm bound on the matrix weighted space $L^2(W; \mathbb R^n),$ \[ \left\|T\otimes \mathrm{Id}_{\mathbb R^n}\right\|_{L^2(W; \mathbb R^n)\rightarrow L^2(W; \mathbb R^n)} \lesssim [W]_{A_2}^{\frac32} \] uniformly over $T\in \mathcal U$, which is the currently best known dependence.

Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations with memory in 3D lacking instantaneous kinematic viscosity

We consider a Navier-Stokes-Voigt fluid model where the instantaneous kinematic viscosity has been completely replaced by a memory term incorporating hereditary effects, in presence of Ekman damping. The dissipative character of our model is weaker than the one where hereditary and instantaneous viscosity coexist, previously studied by Gal and Tachim-Medjo. Nevertheless, we prove the existence of a regular exponential attractor of finite fractal dimension under rather sharp assumptions on the memory kernel.

Domination of multilinear singular integrals by positive sparse forms

We establish a uniform domination of the family of trilinear multiplier forms with singularity over a one-dimensional subspace by positive sparse forms involving $L^p$-averages. This class includes the adjoint forms to the bilinear Hilbert transforms. Our result strengthens the $L^p$-boundedness proved in \cite{MTT} and entails as a corollary a rich multilinear weighted theory. In particular, we obtain $L^{q_1}(v_1) \times L^{q_2}(v_2)$-boundedness of the bilinear Hilbert transform when the weights $v_j$ belong to the class $A_{\frac{q+1}{2}}\cap RH_2$. Our proof relies on a stopping time construction based on newly developed localized outer-$L^p$ embedding theorems for the wave packet transform. In an Appendix, we show how our domination principle can be applied to recover the vector-valued bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transforms recently proved by Benea and Muscalu.

A modulation invariant Carleson embedding theorem outside local $L^2$

The article arXiv:1309.0945 by Do and Thiele develops a theory of Carleson embeddings in outer $L^p$ spaces for the wave packet transform of functions in $ L^p(\mathbb R)$, in the $2\leq p\leq \infty$ range referred to as local $L^2$. In this article, we formulate a suitable extension of this theory to exponents $1<p<2$, answering a question posed in arXiv:1309.0945. The proof of our main embedding theorem involves a refined multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition. We apply our embedding theorem to recover the full known range of $L^p$ estimates for the bilinear Hilbert transforms without reducing to discrete model sums or appealing to generalized restricted weak-type interpolation.

Endpoint bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transform

We study the behavior of the bilinear Hilbert transform $\mathrm{BHT}$ at the boundary of the known boundedness region $\mathcal H$. A sample of our results is the estimate $| \langle\mathrm{BHT}(f_1,f_2),f_3 \rangle | \leq C |F_1|^{\frac34}|F_2| ^{\frac34} |F_3|^{-\frac12} \log\log \Big(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{e}} + \frac{|F_3|}{\min\{|F_1|,|F_2|\}} \Big) $ valid for all tuples of sets $F_j \subset \mathbb R $ of finite measure and functions $f_j$ such that $|f_j| \leq \mathbf{1}_{F_j}$, $j=1,2,3$, with the additional restriction that $f_3$ be supported on a major subset $F_3'$ of $F_3$ that depends on $\{F_j:j=1,2,3\}$. The double logarithmic term improves over the single logarithmic term obtained by Bilyk and Grafakos. Whether the double logarithmic term can be removed entirely, as is the case for the quartile operator discussed by Demeter and the first author, remains open. We employ our endpoint results to describe the blow-up rate of weak-type and strong-type estimates for $\mathrm{BHT}$ as the tuple $\vec α$ approaches the boundary of $\mathcal H$. We also discuss bounds on Lorentz-Orlicz spaces near $L^{\frac23}$, improving on results of Carro, Grafakos, Martell and Soria. The main technical novelty in our article is an enhanced version of the multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition by Nazarov, Oberlin and the second author.

Weak-L^p bounds for the Carleson and Walsh-Carleson operators

We prove a weak-$L^p$ bound for the Walsh-Carleson operator for $p $ near 1, improving on a theorem of Sjolin. We relate our result to the conjectures that the Walsh-Fourier and Fourier series of a function $f\in L\log L(\mathbb T)$ converge for almost every $x \in \mathbb T$.
