On the presence of families of pseudo-bosons in nilpotent Lie algebras of arbitrary corank

We have recently shown that pseudo-bosonic operators realize concrete examples of finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras over the complex field. It has been the first time that such operators were analyzed in terms of nilpotent Lie algebras (under prescribed conditions of physical character). On the other hand, the general classification of a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{l}$ may be given via the size of its Schur multiplier involving the so-called corank $t(\mathfrak{l})$ of $\mathfrak{l}$. We represent $\mathfrak{l}$ by pseudo-bosonic ladder operators for $t(\mathfrak{l}) \le 6$ and this allows us to represent $\mathfrak{l}$ when its dimension is $\le 5$.

A description of pseudo-bosons in terms of nilpotent Lie algebras

We show how the one-mode pseudo-bosonic ladder operators provide concrete examples of nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension five. It is the first time that an algebraic-geometric structure of this kind is observed in the context of pseudo-bosonic operators. Indeed we don't find the well known Heisenberg algebras, which are involved in several quantum dynamical systems, but different Lie algebras which may be decomposed in the sum of two abelian Lie algebras in a prescribed way. We introduce the notion of semidirect sum (of Lie algebras) for this scope and find that it describes very well the behaviour of pseudo-bosonic operators in many quantum models.

Permutability degrees of finite groups

Given a finite group $G$, we introduce the \textit{permutability degree} of $G$, as $$pd(G)=\frac{1}{|G| \ |\mathcal{L}(G)|} {\underset{X \in \mathcal{L}(G)}\sum}|P_G(X)|,$$ where $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is the subgroup lattice of $G$ and $P_G(X)$ the permutizer of the subgroup $X$ in $G$, that is, the subgroup generated by all cyclic subgroups of $G$ that permute with $X\in \mathcal{L}(G)$. The number $pd(G)$ allows us to find some structural restrictions on $G$. Successively, we investigate the relations between $pd(G)$, the probability of commuting subgroups $sd(G)$ of $G$ and the probability of commuting elements $d(G)$ of $G$. Proving some inequalities between $pd(G)$, $sd(G)$ and $d(G)$, we correlate these notions.

A Study in Locally Compact Groups

The class of locally compact near abelian groups is introduced and investigated as a class of metabelian groups formalizing and applying the concept of scalar multiplication. The structure of locally compact near abelian groups and its close connections to prime number theory are discussed and elucidated by graph theoretical tools. These investigations require a thorough reviewing and extension to present circumstances of various aspects of the general theory of locally compact groups such as -the Chabauty space of closed subgroups with its natural compact Hausdorff topology, -a very general Sylow subgroup theory for periodic groups including their Hall systems, -the scalar automorphisms of locally compact abelian groups, -the theory of products of closed subgroups and their relation to semidirect products, and -inductively monothetic groups are introduced and classified. As applications, firstly, a complete classification is given of locally compact topologically quasihamiltonian groups, which has been initiated by F. Kümmich, and, secondly, Yu. Mukhin's classification of locally compact topologically modular groups is retrieved and further illuminated.

Exterior degree of infinite groups

The exterior degree of a finite group has been introduced in [P. Niroomand and R. Rezaei, On the exterior degree of finite groups, Comm. Algebra 39 (2011), 335--343] and the present paper is devoted to study the exterior degree of infinite groups. We find some inequalities of combinatorial nature, which generalize those of the finite case and allow us to get structural restrictions for the whole group.

Two bounds on the noncommuting graph

Erdős introduced the noncommuting graph, in order to study the number of commuting elements in a finite group. Despite the use of combinatorial ideas, his methods involved several techniques of classical analysis. The interest for this graph is becoming relevant in the last years for various reasons. Here we deal with a numerical aspect, showing for the first time an isoperimetric inequality and an analytic condition in terms of Sobolev inequalities. This last result holds in the more general context of weighted locally finite graphs.

Remarks on the tensor degree of finite groups

The present paper is a note on the tensor degree of finite groups, introduced recently in literature. This numerical invariant generalizes the commutativity degree through the notion of nonabelian tensor square. We show two inequalities, which correlate the tensor and the commutativity degree of finite groups, and, indirectly, structural properties will be discussed.

Estimations of the low dimensional homology of Lie algebras with large abelian ideals

A Lie algebra $L$ of dimension $n \ge1 $ may be classified, looking for restrictions of the size on its second integral homology Lie algebra $H_2(L,\mathbb{Z})$, denoted by $M(L)$ and often called Schur multiplier of $L$. In case $L$ is nilpotent, we proved that $\mathrm{dim} \ M(L) \leq \frac{1}{2}(n+m-2)(n-m-1)+1$, where $\mathrm{dim} \ L^2=m \ge 1$, and worked on this bound under various perspectives. In the present paper, we estimate the previous bound for $\mathrm{dim} \ M(L) $ with respect to other inequalities of the same nature. Finally, we provide new upper bounds for the Schur multipliers of pairs and triples of nilpotent Lie algebras, by means of certain exact sequences due to Ganea and Stallings in their original form.

Relative n-isoclinism classes and relative n-th nilpotency degree of finite groups

The purpose of the present paper is to consider the notion of isoclinism between two finite groups and its generalization to n-isoclinism, introduced by J. C. Bioch in 1976. A weaker form of n-isoclinism, called relative n-isoclinism, will be discussed. This will allow us to improve some classical results in literature. We will point out the connections between a relative n-isoclinism and the notions of commutativity degree, n-th nilpotency degree and relative n-th nilpotency degree, which arouse interest in the classification of groups of prime power order in the last years.

On the tensor degree of finite groups

We study the number of elements $x$ and $y$ of a finite group $G$ such that $x \otimes y= 1_{_{G \otimes G}}$ in the nonabelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ of $G$. This number, divided by $|G|^2$, is called the tensor degree of $G$ and has connection with the exterior degree, introduced few years ago in [P. Niroomand and R. Rezaei, On the exterior degree of finite groups, Comm. Algebra 39 (2011), 335--343]. The analysis of upper and lower bounds of the tensor degree allows us to find interesting structural restrictions for the whole group.

A note on the invariance in the nonabelian tensor product

In the nonabelian tensor product $G\otimes H$ of two groups $G$ and $H$ many properties pass from $G$ and $H$ to $G\otimes H$. There is a wide literature for different properties involved in this passage. We look at weak conditions for which such a passage may happen.

On an argument of J.--F. Cardoso dealing with perturbations of joint diagonalizers

B. Afsari has recently proposed a new approach to the matrix joint diagonalization, introduced by J.--F. Cardoso in 1994, in order to investigate the independent component analysis and the blind signal processing in a wider prospective. Delicate notions of linear algebra and differential geometry are involved in the works of B. Afsari and the present paper continues such a line of research, focusing on a theoretical condition which has significant consequences in the numerical applications.

Minimal non-nilpotent groups which are supersolvable

The structure of a group which is not nilpotent but all of whose proper subgroups are nilpotent has interested the researches of several authors both in the finite case and in the infinite case. The present paper generalizes some classic descriptions of M. Newman, H. Smith and J. Wiegold in the context of supersolvable groups.

n-th Relative nilpotency degree and relative n-isoclinism classes

P. Hall introduced the notion of isoclinism between two groups more than 60 years ago. Successively, many authors have extended such a notion in different contexts. The present paper deals with the notion of relative n-isoclinism, given by N. S. Hekster in 1986, and with the notion of n-th relative nilpotency degree, recently introduced in literature.

Elements with r-th roots in finite groups

The probability that a randomly chosen element of a finite group is an $r$--th root (for any integer $r\geq2$) has been studied largely in case $r=2$. Certain techniques may be generalized for $r>2$ and here we find the exact value of this probability for projective special linear groups. A result of density is placed at the end, in order to show an analogy with the case $r=2$.

The probability that $x$ and $y$ commute in a compact group

We show that a compact group $G$ has finite conjugacy classes, i.e., is an FC-group if and only if its center $Z(G)$ is open if and only if its commutator subgroup $G'$ is finite. Let $d(G)$ denote the Haar measure of the set of all pairs $(x,y)$ in $G \times G$ for which $[x,y] = 1$; this, formally, is the probability that two randomly picked elements commute. We prove that $d(G)$ is always rational and that it is positive if and only if $G$ is an extension of an FC-group by a finite group. This entails that $G$ is abelian by finite. The proofs involve measure theory, transformation groups, Lie theory of arbitrary compact groups, and representation theory of compact groups. Examples and references to the history of the discussion are given at the end of the paper.

A note on the Schur multiplier of a nilpotent Lie algebra

For a nilpotent Lie algebra $L$ of dimension $n$ and dim$(L^2)=m$, we find the upper bound dim$(M(L))\leq {1/2}(n+m-2)(n-m-1)+1$, where $M(L)$ denotes the Schur multiplier of $L$. In case $m=1$ the equality holds if and only if $L\cong H(1)\oplus A$, where $A$ is an abelian Lie algebra of dimension $n-3$ and H(1) is the Heisenberg algebra of dimension 3.
