Some considerations on the nonabelian tensor square of crystallographic groups

The nonabelian tensor square $G\otimes G$ of a polycyclic group $G$ is a polycyclic group and its structure arouses interest in many contexts. The same assertion is still true for wider classes of solvable groups. This motivated us to work on two levels in the present paper: on a hand, we investigate the growth of the Hirsch length of $G\otimes G$ by looking at that of $G$, on another hand, we study the nonabelian tensor product of pro--$p$--groups of finite coclass, which are a remarkable class of solvable groups without center, and then we do considerations on their Hirsch length. Among other results, restrictions on the Schur multiplier will be discussed.

Bounds for the relative n-th nilpotency degree in compact groups

The line of investigation of the present paper goes back to a classical work of W. H. Gustafson of the 1973, in which it is described the probability that two randomly chosen group elements commute. In the same work, he gave some bounds for this kind of probability, providing information on the group structure. We have recently obtained some generalizations of his results for finite groups. Here we improve them in the context of the compact groups.

Considerations on the subgroup commutativity degree and related notions

The concept of subgroup commutativity degree of a finite group $G$ is arising interest in several areas of group theory in the last years, since it gives a measure of the probability that a randomly picked pair $(H,K)$ of subgroups of $G$ satisfies the condition $HK=KH$. In this paper, a stronger notion is studied and relations with the commutativity degree are found.

Subgroup S-commutativity degrees of finite groups

The so--called subgroup commutativity degree $sd(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the number of permuting subgroups $(H,K) \in \mathrm{L}(G) \times \mathrm{L}(G)$, where $\mathrm{L}(G)$ is the subgroup lattice of $G$, divided by $|\mathrm{L}(G)|^2$. It allows us to measure how $G$ is far from the celebrated classification of quasihamiltonian groups of K. Iwasawa. Here we generalize $sd(G)$, looking at suitable sublattices of $\mathrm{L}(G)$, and show some new lower bounds.

Commuting powers and exterior degree of finite groups

In [P. Niroomand, R. Rezaei, On the exterior degree of finite groups, Comm. Algebra 39 (2011), 335-343] it is introduced a group invariant, related to the number of elements $x$ and $y$ of a finite group $G$, such that $x \wedge y = 1_{G \wedge G}$ in the exterior square $G \wedge G$ of $G$. This number gives restrictions on the Schur multiplier of $G$ and, consequently, large classes of groups can be described. In the present paper we generalize the previous investigations on the topic, focusing on the number of elements of the form $h^m \wedge k$ of $H \wedge K$ such that $h^m \wedge k = 1_{H \wedge K}$, where $m \ge 1$ and $H$ and $K$ are arbitrary subgroups of $G$.

On the Connectivity of the Sylow Graph of a Finite Group

The Sylow graph $Γ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ originated from recent investigations on the so--called $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The connectivity of $Γ(G)$ was proved only few years ago, involving the classification of finite simple groups, and the structure of $G$ may be strongly restricted, once information on $Γ(G)$ are given. The first result of the present paper deals with a condition on $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The second result deals with a computational criterion, related to the connectivity of $Γ(G)$.

On minimal non-$CL$-groups

If $m$ is a positive integer or infinity, the $m$-layer (or briefly, the layer) of a group $G$ is the subgroup $G_m$ generated by all elements of $G$ of order $m$. This notion goes back to some contributions of Ya.D. Polovickii of almost 60 years ago and is often investigated, because the presence of layers influences the group structure. If $G_m$ is finite for all $m$, $G$ is called $FL$-group (or $FO$-group). A generalization is given by $CL$-groups, that is, groups in which $G_m$ is a Chernikov group for all $m$. By working on the notion of $CL$-group instead of that of $FL$-group, we extend a recent result of Z. Zhang, describing the structure of a group which is not a $CL$-group, but whose proper subgroups are $CL$-groups.
