Tunable spin and orbital Edelstein effect at (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

Converting charge current into spin current is one of the main mechanisms exploited in spintronics. One prominent example is the Edelstein effect, namely the generation of a magnetization in response to an external electric field, which can be realized in systems with lack of inversion symmetry. If a system has electrons with an orbital angular momentum character, an orbital magnetization can be generated by the applied electric field giving rise to the so-called orbital Edelstein effect. Oxide heterostructures are the ideal platform for these effects due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the lack of inversion symmetries. Beyond a gate-tunable spin Edelstein effect, we predict an orbital Edelstein effect an order of magnitude larger then the spin one at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We model the material as a bilayer of $t_{2g}$ orbitals using a tight-binding approach, while transport properties are obtained in the Boltzmann approach. We give an effective model at low filling which explains the non-trivial behaviour of the Edelstein response, showing that the hybridization between the electronic bands crucially impacts the Edelstein susceptibility.

Quantum Coherence in Loopless Superconductive Networks

Measurements indicating that planar networks of superconductive islands connected by Josephson junctions display long range quantum coherence are reported. The networks consist of superconducting islands connected by Josephson junctions and have a tree-like topological structure containing no loops. Enhancements of superconductive gap over specific branches of the networks and sharp increases of pair currents are the main signatures of the coherent states and, in order to unambiguously attribute the observed effects to branches being embedded in the networks, comparisons with geometrically equivalent, but isolated, counterparts are reported. Tuning the Josephson coupling energy by an external magnetic field generates increases of the Josephson currents, along the above mentioned specific branches, which follow a functional dependence typical of phase transitions. Results are presented for double comb and star geometry networks and in both cases the observed effects provide positive quantitative evidence of the predictions of existing theoretical models.

Hilbert series of Parallelogram Polyominoes

We present a conjecture about the reduced Hilbert series of the coordinate ring of a simple polyomino in terms of particular arrangements of non-attacking rooks that can be placed on the polyomino. By using a computational approach, we prove that the above conjecture holds for all simple polyominoes up to rank $11$. In addition, we prove that the conjecture holds true for the class of parallelogram polyominoes, by looking at those as simple planar distributive lattices. Finally, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the Gorensteinnes of parallelogram polyominoes.

$(S_2)$-condition and Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals

We describe the simplicial complex $Δ$ such that the initial ideal of $J_G$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ$. By $Δ$ we show that if $J_G$ is $(S_2)$ then $G$ is accessible. We also characterize all accessible blocks with whiskers of cycle rank 3 and we define a new infinite class of accessible blocks with whiskers for any cycle rank. Finally, by using a computational approach, we show that the graphs with at most 12 vertices whose binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay are all and only the accessible ones.

A topological current divider

We study the transport properties of a hybrid junction made of a ferromagnetic lead in electrical connection with the helical edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In this system, the time reversal symmetry, which characterizes the ballistic edge modes of the topological insulator, is explicitly broken inside the ferromagnetic region. This conflict situation generates unusual transport phenomena at the interface which are the manifestation of the interplay between the spin polarization of the injected current and the spin-momentum locking mechanism operating inside the topological insulator. We show that the spin polarized current originated in the ferromagnetic region is asymmetrically divided in spatially separated branch currents sustained by edge channels with different helicity inside the topological insulator. The above findings provide the working principle of a topological current divider in which the relative intensity of the branch currents is determined by the polarization of the incoming current. We discuss the relevance of this effect in spintronics where, for instance, it offers an alternative way to measure the current polarization generated by a ferromagnetic electrode.

Order parameter focalization and critical temperature enhancement in synthetic networks of superconducting islands

A generalization of the de Gennes-Alexander micronetworks theory is presented. In this framework, the phase transition of synthetic networks of superconducting islands is described by means of a Ginzburg-Landau approach adapted to the case of granular systems. The general implications of the theory are carefully explained. As a specific example, we demonstrate that star networks support the exponential localization of the order parameter accompanied by an enhancement of the critical temperature of the system. These findings contribute to clarify the physics of the phase transitions in synthetic networks of Josephson-coupled superconducting islands.

Hilbert Series of simple thin polyominoes

Let P be a simple thin polyomino, roughly speaking a polyomino that has no holes and does not contain a square tetromino as a subpolyomino. In this paper, we determine the reduced Hilbert series $h(t)/(1-t)^d$ of K[P] by proving that $h(t)$ is the rook polynomial of P. As an application, we characterize the Gorenstein simple thin polyominoes.

Effects of geometric frustration in Kitaev chains

We study the topological phase transitions of a Kitaev chain in the presence of geometric frustration caused by the addition of a single long-range hopping. The latter condition defines a legged-ring geometry (Kitaev tie) lacking of translational invariance. In order to study the topological properties of the system, we generalize the transfer matrix approach through which the emergence of Majorana modes is studied. We find that geometric frustration gives rise to a topological phase diagram in which non-trivial phases alternate with trivial ones at varying the range of the extra hopping and the chemical potential. Frustration effects are also studied in a translational invariant model consisting of multiple-ties. In the latter system, the translational invariance permits to use the topological bulk invariant to determine the phase diagram and bulk-edge correspondence is recovered. It has been demonstrated that geometric frustration effects persist even when translational invariance is restored. These findings are relevant in studying the topological phases of looped ballistic conductors.

Primality of polyomino ideals by quadratic Gröbner basis

In this work, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition on a polyomino ideal for having the set of inner 2-minors as degree reverse lexicographic Gröbner basis, due to combinatorial properties of the polyomino itself. Moreover, we prove that when the latter holds the ideal coincides with the lattice ideal associated to the polyomino, that is the ideal is prime. As an application, we describe two new infinite families of prime polyominoes.

Phenomenology at the LHC of composite particles from strongly interacting Standard Model fermions via four-fermion operators of NJL type

A new physics scenario shows that four-fermion operators of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type have a strong-coupling UV fixed point, where composite fermions $F$ (bosons $Π$) form as bound states of three (two) SM elementary fermions and they couple to their constituents via effective contact interactions at the composite scale $Λ\approx {\cal O} $(TeV). We present a phenomenological study to investigate such composite particles at the LHC by computing the production cross sections and decay widths of composite fermions in the context of the relevant experiments at the LHC with $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}={\rm 13}$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}={\rm 14}$ TeV. Systematically examining all the different composite particles $F$ and the signatures with which they can manifest, we found a vast spectrum of composite particles $F$ that has not yet been explored at the LHC. Recasting the recent CMS results of the resonant channel $pp\rightarrow e^+F \rightarrow e^+e^- q\bar{q}'$, we find that the composite fermion mass $m_F$ below 4.25 TeV is excluded for $Λ$/$m_F$ = 1. We further highlight the region of parameter space where this specific composite particle $F$ can appear using 3 ab$^{-1}$, expected by the High-Luminosity LHC, computing 3 and 5 $σ$ contour plots of its statistical significance.

Primality of multiply connected polyominoes

It is known that the polyomino ideal of simple polyominoes is prime. In this paper, we focus on multiply connected polyominoes, namely polyominoes with holes, and observe that the non-existence of a certain sequence of inner intervals of the polyomino, called zig-zag walk, gives a necessary condition for the primality of the polyomino ideal. Moreover, by computational approach, we prove that for all polyominoes with rank less than or equal to 14 the above condition is also sufficient. Lastly, we present an infinite class of prime polyomino ideals.

Regularity and Gorenstein property of the $L$-convex Polyominoes

We study the coordinate ring of an $L$-convex polyomino, determine its regularity in terms of the maximal number of rooks that can be placed in the polyomino. We also characterize the Gorenstein $L$-convex polyominoes and those which are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum, and compute the Cohen--Macaulay type of any $L$-convex polyomino in terms of the maximal rectangles covering it.

Valley to charge current conversion in graphene grain boundaries

The conduction properties of a grain boundary junction with Fermi velocity mismatch are analyzed. We provide a generalization of the Dirac Hamiltonian model taking into account the Fermi velocity gradient at the interface. General boundary conditions for the scattering problem are derived within the framework of the matching matrix method. We show that the scattering properties of the interface, as predicted by the theory, strongly depend on the boundary conditions used. We demonstrate that when the valley degeneracy is broken a charge current is established at the grain boundary interface. These findings provide the working principle of a valley to charge current converter, which is relevant for the emergent field of valleytronics.

Topological phases of a Kitaev tie

We investigate the topological properties of a Kitaev chain in the shape of a legged-ring, which is here referred to as Kitaev tie. We demonstrate that the Kitaev tie is a frustrated system in which topological properties are determined by the position of the movable bond (the tie knot). We determine the phase diagram of the system as a function of the knot position and chemical potential, also discussing the effects of topological frustration. The stability of the topological Kitaev tie is addressed by a careful analysis of the system free energy.

Conduction properties of extended defect states in Dirac materials

We demonstrate the existence of localized states in close vicinity of a linear defect in graphene. These states have insulating or conducting character. Insulating states form a flat band, while conducting states present a slowdown of the group velocity which is not originated by many-body interactions and it is controlled by the interface properties. For appropriate boundary conditions, the conducting states exhibit momentum-valley locking and protection from backscattering effects. These findings provide a contribution to the recent discussion on the origin of correlated phases in graphene.

Unveiling Signatures of Topological Phases in Open Kitaev Chains and Ladders

In this work, the general problem of the characterization of the topological phase of an open quantum system is addressed. In particular, we study the topological properties of Kitaev chains and ladders under the perturbing effect of a current flux injected into the system using an external normal lead and derived from it via a superconducting electrode. After discussing the topological phase diagram of the isolated systems, using a scattering technique within the Bogoliubov de Gennes formulation, we analyze the differential conductance properties of these topological devices as a function of all relevant model parameters. The relevant problem of implementing local spectroscopic measurements to characterize topological systems is also addressed by studying the system electrical response as a function of the position and the distance of the normal electrode (tip). The results show how the signatures of topological order affect the electrical response of the analyzed systems, a subset of which being robust also against the effects of a moderate amount of disorder. The analysis of the internal modes of the nanodevices demonstrates that topological protection can be lost when quantum states of an initially isolated topological system are hybridized with those of the external reservoirs. The conclusions of this work could be useful in understanding the topological phases of nanowire-based mesoscopic devices.

The Tuned Bistable Nonlinear Energy Sink

A bistable nonlinear energy sink conceived to mitigate the vibrations of host structural systems is considered in this paper. The hosting structure consists of two coupled symmetric linear oscillators (LOs) and the nonlinear energy sink (NES) is connected to one of them. The peculiar nonlinear dynamics of the resulting three-degree-of-freedom system is analytically described by means of its slow invariant manifold derived from a suitable rescaling, coupled with a harmonic balance procedure, applied to the governing equations transformed in modal coordinates. On the basis of the first-order reduced model, the absorber is tuned and optimized to mitigate both modes for a broad range of impulsive load magnitudes applied to the LOs. On the one hand, for low-amplitude, in-well, oscillations, the parameters governing the bistable NES are tuned in order to make it functioning as a linear tuned mass damper (TMD); on the other, for high-amplitude, cross-well, oscillations, the absorber is optimized on the basis of the invariant manifolds features. The analytically predicted performance of the resulting tuned bistable nonlinear energy sink (TBNES) are numerically validated in terms of dissipation time; the absorption capabilities are eventually compared with either a TMD and a purely cubic NES. It is shown that, for a wide range of impulse amplitudes, the TBNES allows the most efficient absorption even for the detuned mode, where a single TMD cannot be effective.

Chordal circulant graphs and induced matching number

Let $G=C_{n}(S)$ be a circulant graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper we characterize chordal circulant graphs and then we compute $ν(G)$, the induced matching number of $G$. These latter are useful in bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the edge ring of $G$.
