A WSe2 vertical field emission transistor

We report the first observation of gate-controlled field emission current from a tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayer, synthesized by chemical-vapour deposition on SiO2/Si substrate. Ni contacted WSe2 monolayer back-gated transistors, under high vacuum, exhibit n-type conduction and drain-bias dependent transfer characteristics, which are attributed to oxygen/water desorption and drain induced Schottky barrier lowering, respectively. The gate-tuned n-type conduction enables field emission, i.e. the extraction of electrons by quantum tunnelling, even from the flat part of the WSe2 monolayers. Electron emission occurs under an electric field ~100 V μm^(-1) and exhibit good time stability. Remarkably, the field emission current can be modulated by the back-gate voltage. The first field-emission vertical transistor based on WSe2 monolayer is thus demonstrated and can pave the way to further optimize new WSe2 based devices for use in vacuum electronics.

2-dimensional vertex decomposable circulant graphs

Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$ and let $Δ$ be its independence complex. We describe the well-covered circulant graphs with 2-dimensional $Δ$ and construct an infinite family of vertex-decomposable circulant graphs within this family.

On the reduced Euler characteristic of independence complexes of circulant graphs

Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$. We study the reduced Euler characteristic $\tildeχ$ of the independence complex $Δ(G)$ for $n=p^k$ with $p$ prime and for $n=2p^k$ with $p$ odd prime, proving that in both cases $\tildeχ$ does not vanish. We also give an example of circulant graph whose independence complex has $\tildeχ$ equals to $0$, giving a negative answer to R. Hoshino.

Searches for new physics in lepton plus jet final states in ATLAS and CMS

The most recent results on searches in lepton plus jet final states motivated by different models beyond the standard model are presented, using pp collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS detectors during Run I and Run II at the CERN LHC. Leptoquarks and heavy Majorana neutrinos that arise in the left-right model are looked for in the final states with two leptons and two jets (ll + jj; l = e; mu; tau ). Heavy Majorana neutrinos are further investigated by relying on a composite-fermion scenario, considering two leptons and one large-radius jet (ll + J; l = e, mu), and in the context of a model with Type-1 seesaw mechanism, requiring two same-sign leptons plus dijet (ll' + jj; l,l' = e, mu). Finally, models of microscopic black holes with two to six extra dimensions are tested by analysing the channels with at least one lepton and two additional jets (l + jj; l = e, mu). In all the searches, the observed data are in good agreement with the standard model prediction and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the parameters of difierent models.

Non-stationary resonance dynamics of the harmonically forced pendulum

The stationary and highly non-stationary resonant dynamics of the harmonically forced pendulum are described in the framework of a semi-inverse procedure combined with the Limiting Phase Trajectory concept. This procedure, implying only existence of slow time scale, permits to avoid any restriction on the oscillation amplitudes. The main results relating to the dynamical bifurcation thresholds are represented in a closed form. The small parameter defining the separation of the time scales is naturally identified in the analytical procedure. Considering the pendulum frequency as the control parameter we reveal two qualitative transitions. One of them corresponding to stationary instability with formation of two additional stationary states, the other, associated with the most intense energy drawing from the source, at which the amplitude of pendulum oscillations abruptly grows. Analytical predictions of both bifurcations are verified by numerical integration of original equation. It is also shown that occurrence of chaotic domains may be strongly connected with the second transition.

Side-gate leakage and field emission in all-graphene field effect transistors on SiO2/Si substrate

We fabricate planar all-graphene field-effect transistors with self-aligned side-gates at 100 nm from the main graphene conductive channel, using a single lithographic step. We demonstrate side-gating below 1V with conductance modulation of 35% and transconductance up to 0.5 mS/mm at 10 mV drain bias. We measure the planar leakage along the SiO2/vacuum gate dielectric over a wide voltage range, reporting rapidly growing current above 15 V. We unveil the microscopic mechanisms driving the leakage, as Frenkel-Poole transport through SiO2 up to the activation of Fowler-Nordheim tunneling in vacuum, which becomes dominant at high voltages. We report a field-emission current density as high as 1uA/um between graphene flakes. These findings are essential for the miniaturization of atomically thin devices.

Non-stationary resonance dynamics of weakly coupled pendula

In this paper we fill the gap in understanding the non-stationary resonance dynamics of the weakly coupled pendula model, having significant applications in numerous fields of physics such as super- conducting Josephson junctions, Bose-Einstein condensates, DNA, etc.. While common knowledge of the problem is based on two alternative limiting asymptotics, namely the quasi-linear approach and the approximation of independent pendula, we present a unified description in the framework of new concept of Limiting Phase Trajectories (LPT), without any restriction on the amplitudes of oscillation. As a result the conditions of intense energy exchange between the pendula and transition to energy localization are revealed in all possible diapason of initial conditions. By doing so, the roots and the domain of chaotic behavior are clarified as they are associated with this transition while simultaneously approaching the pendulum separatrix. The analytical findings are corrobo- rated by numerical simulations. By considering the simplest case of two weakly coupled pendula, we pave the ground for new opening possibilities of significant extensions in both fundamental and applied directions.

Graphene field effect transistors with Niobium contacts and asymmetric transfer characteristics

We fabricate back-gated field effect transistors using Niobium electrodes on mechanically exfoliated monolayer graphene and perform electrical characterization in the pressure range from atmospheric down to 10-4 mbar. We study the effect of room temperature vacuum degassing and report asymmetric transfer characteristics with a resistance plateau in the n-branch. We show that weakly chemisorbed Nb acts as p-dopant on graphene and explain the transistor characteristics by Nb/graphene interaction with unpinned Fermi level at the interface.

Quantum Waveguide Theory of the Josephson effect in Multiband Superconductors

We formulate a quantum waveguide theory of the Josephson effect in multiband superconductors, with special emphasis on iron-based materials. By generalizing the boundary conditions of the scattering problem, we first determine the Andreev levels spectrum and then derive an explicit expression for the Josephson current which generalizes the formula of the single band case. In deriving the results, we provide a second quantization field theory allowing to evaluate the current-phase relation and the Josephson current fluctuations in multiband systems. We present results for two different order parameter symmetries, namely $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$, which are relevant in multiband systems. The obtained results show that the $s_\pm$ symmetry can support $π$ states which are absent in the $s_{++}$ case. We also argue a certain fragility of the Josephson current against phase fluctuations in the $s_{++}$ case. The temperature dependence of the Josephson critical current is also analyzed and we find, for both the order parameter symmetries, remarkable violations of the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation. The results are relevant in view of possible experiments aimed at investigating the order parameter symmetry of multiband superconductors using mesoscopic Josephson junctions.

Local characterization of ferromagnetic properties in ferromagnet/superconductor bilayer by Point Contact Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy

We realized point contact spectroscopy experiment on ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers. Differential conductance curves show several features that we explained within Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism considering the presence of two interfaces in the normal-metal-tip/ferromagnet/superconductor device. We demonstrate that such configuration is suitable as local probe of the spin polarization and thickness of ferromagnetic layer, directly on bilayer areas. This is due to the high sensitivity of the Andreev surface states to the physical properties of the ferromagnetic interlayer.

Spin current pumping in helical Luttinger liquids

We study the DC spin current induced into an unbiased quantum spin Hall system through a two-point contacts setup with time dependent electron tunneling amplitudes. By means of two external gates, it is possible to drive a current with spin-preserving and spin-flipping contributions showing peculiar oscillations as a function of pumping frequency, electron-electron interaction and temperature. From its interference patterns as a function of the Fabry-Perot and Aharonov-Bohm phases, it is possible to extract information about the helical nature of the edge states and the intensity of the electron-electron interaction.

Nonequilibrium properties of an atomic quantum dot coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study nonequilibrium properties of an atomic quantum dot (AQD) coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) within Keldysh-Green's function formalism when the AQD level is varied harmonically in time. Nonequilibrium features in the AQD energy absorption spectrum are the side peaks that develop as an effect of photon absorption and emission. We show that atoms can be efficiently transferred from the BEC into the AQD for the parameter regime of current experiments with cold atoms.

Rashba spin-orbit-interaction-based quantum pump in graphene

We present a proposal for an adiabatic quantum pump based on a graphene monolayer patterned by electrostatic gates and operated in the low-energy Dirac regime. The setup under investigation works in the presence of inhomogeneous spin-orbit interactions of intrinsic- and Rashba-type and allows to generate spin polarized coherent current. A local spin polarized current is induced by the pumping mechanism assisted by the spin-double refraction phenomenon.

Charge transfer and trapping as origin of a double dip in the transfer characteristics of graphene based field-effect transistors

We discuss the origin of an additional dip other than the charge neutrality point observed in transfer characteristics of graphene-based field-effect transistors. The double-dip is proved to arise from charge transfer between graphene and metal electrodes, while charge storage at the graphene/SiO2 interface enhances it. Considering different Fermi energy from the neutrality point along the channel and partial charge pinning at the contacts, we propose a model which explains all features in gate voltage loops.
