$N$-player games and mean field games of moderate interactions

We study the asymptotic organization among many optimizing individuals interacting in a suitable "moderate" way. We justify this limiting game by proving that its solution provides approximate Nash equilibria for large but finite player games. This proof depends upon the derivation of a law of large numbers for the empirical processes in the limit as the number of players tends to infinity. Because it is of independent interest, we prove this result in full detail. We characterize the solutions of the limiting game via a verification argument.

Quantitative convergence rates for scaling limit of SPDEs with transport noise

We consider on the torus the scaling limit of stochastic 2D (inviscid) fluid dynamical equations with transport noise to deterministic viscous equations. Quantitative estimates on the convergence rates are provided by combining analytic and probabilistic arguments, especially heat kernel properties and maximal estimates for stochastic convolutions. Similar ideas are applied to the stochastic 2D Keller-Segel model, yielding explicit choice of noise to ensure that the blow-up probability is less than any given threshold. Our approach also gives rise to some mixing property for stochastic linear transport equations and dissipation enhancement in the viscous case.

From additive to transport noise in 2D fluid dynamics

Additive noise in Partial Differential equations, in particular those of fluid mechanics, has relatively natural motivations. The aim of this work is showing that suitable multiscale arguments lead rigorously, from a model of fluid with additive noise, to transport type noise. The arguments apply both to small-scale random perturbations of the fluid acting on a large-scale passive scalar and to the action of the former on the large scales of the fluid itself. Our approach consists in studying the (stochastic) characteristics associated to small-scale random perturbations of the fluid, here modelled by stochastic 2D Euler equations with additive noise, and their convergence in the infinite scale separation limit.

An Example of Intrinsic Randomness in Deterministic PDEs

A new mechanism leading to a random version of Burgers' equation is introduced: it is shown that the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process in discrete time (TASEP) can be understood as an intrinsically stochastic, non-entropic weak solution of Burgers' equation on $\mathbb{R}$. In this interpretation, the appearance of randomness in the Burgers' dynamics is caused by random additions of jumps to the solution, corresponding to the random effects in TASEP.

The KPP equation as a scaling limit of locally interacting Brownian particles

Fisher-KPP equation is proved to be the scaling limit of a system of Brownian particles with local interaction. Particles proliferate and die depending on the local concentration of other particles. Opposite to discrete models, controlling concentration of particles is a major difficulty in Brownian particle interaction; local interactions instead of mean field or moderate ones makes it more difficult to implement the law of large numbers properties. The approach taken here to overcome these difficulties is largely inspired by A. Hammond and F. Rezakhanlou [10] implemented there in the mean free path case instead of the local interaction regime.

Eddy heat exchange at the boundary under white noise turbulence

We prove the existence of an eddy heat diffusion coefficient coming from an idealized model of turbulent fluid. A difficulty lies in the presence of a boundary, with also turbulent mixing and the eddy diffusion coefficient going to zero at the boundary. Nevertheless enhanced diffusion takes place.

High mode transport noise improves vorticity blow-up control in 3D Navier-Stokes equations

The paper is devoted to the open problem of regularization by noise of 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Opposite to several attempts made with additive noise which remained inconclusive, we show here that a suitable multiplicative noise of transport type has a regularizing effect. It is proven that stochastic transport noise provides a bound on vorticity which gives well posedness, with high probability. The result holds for sufficiently large noise intensity and sufficiently high spectrum of the noise.

Delayed blow-up by transport noise

For some deterministic nonlinear PDEs on the torus whose solutions may blow up in finite time, we show that, under suitable conditions on the nonlinear term, the blow-up is delayed by multiplicative noise of transport type in a certain scaling limit. The main result is applied to the 3D Keller-Segel, 3D Fisher-KPP and 2D Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations, yielding long-time existence for large initial data with high probability.

Stochastic model reduction: convergence and applications to climate equations

We study stochastic model reduction for evolution equations in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, and show the convergence to the reduced equations via abstract results of Wong-Zakai type for stochastic equations driven by a scaled Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Both weak and strong convergence are investigated, depending on the presence of quadratic interactions between reduced variables and driving noise. Finally, we are able to apply our results to a class of equations used in climate modeling.

Numerical computation of probabilities for nonlinear SDEs in high dimension using Kolmogorov equation

Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) in high dimension, having the structure of finite dimensional approximation of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs), are considered. The aim is to compute numerically expected values and probabilities associated to their solutions, by solving the associated Kolmogorov equations, with a partial use of Monte Carlo strategy - precisely, using Monte Carlo only for the linear part of the SDE. The basic idea was presented in Flandoli et al., JMAA (2020), but here we strongly improve the numerical results by means of a shift of the auxiliary Gaussian process. For relatively simple nonlinearities, we have good results in dimension of the order of 100.

Global well-posedness of the 3D Navier--Stokes equations perturbed by a deterministic vector field

We are concerned with the problem of global well-posedness of the 3D Navier--Stokes equations on the torus with unitary viscosity. While a full answer to this question seems to be out of reach of the current techniques, we establish a regularization by a deterministic vector field. More precisely, we consider the vorticity form of the system perturbed by an additional transport type term. Such a perturbation conserves the enstrophy and therefore a priori it does not imply any smoothing. Our main result is a construction of a deterministic vector field $v=v(t,x)$ which provides the desired regularization of the system and yields global well-posedness for large initial data outside arbitrary small sets. The proof relies on probabilistic arguments developed by Flandoli and Luo, tools from rough path theory by Hofmanová, Leahy and Nilssen and a new Wong--Zakai approximation result, which itself combines probabilistic and rough path techniques.

On the relation between the Girsanov transform and the Kolmogorov equations for SPDEs

The Girsanov transform and Kolmogorov equations are two useful methods for studying SPDEs. It is shown that, under suitable conditions, the series expansion obtained from the Girsanov transform coincides with the one generated by an iteration scheme for Kolmogorov equations. We also apply the iteration approach to extend the well posedness theory for Kolmogorov equations beyond the boundedness condition on the nonlinear term.

On the Macroscopic limit of Brownian Particles with local interaction

An interacting particle system made of diffusion processes with local interaction is considered and the macroscopic limit to a nonlinear PDE is investigated. Few rigorous results exists on this problem and in particular the explicit form of the nonlinearity is not known. The paper reviews this subject, some of the main ideas to get the limit nonlinear PDE and provides both heuristic and numerical informations on the precise form of the nonlinearity which are new with respect to the literature and coherent with the few known informations.

Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations and Related Models

Regularization by noise for certain classes of fluid dynamic equations, a theme dear to Giuseppe Da Prato (see G. Da Prato and A. Debussche, Ergodicity for the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, J. Math. Pures Appl., 2003), is reviewed focusing on 3D Navier-Stokes equations and dyadic models of turbulence.
