Scaling limit of stochastic 2D Euler equations with transport noises to the deterministic Navier-Stokes equations

We consider a family of stochastic 2D Euler equations in vorticity form on the torus, with transport type noises and $L^2$-initial data. Under a suitable scaling of the noises, we show that the solutions converge weakly to that of the deterministic 2D Navier--Stokes equations. Consequently, we deduce that the weak solutions of the stochastic 2D Euler equations are approximately unique and "weakly quenched exponential mixing".

Stochastic ODEs and stochastic linear PDEs with critical drift: regularity, duality and uniqueness

In this paper linear stochastic transport and continuity equations with drift in critical $L^{p}$ spaces are considered. In this situation noise prevents shocks for the transport equation and singularities in the density for the continuity equation, starting from smooth initial conditions. Specifically, we first prove a result of Sobolev regularity of solutions, which is false for the corresponding deterministic equation. The technique needed to reach the critical case is new and based on parabolic equations satisfied by moments of first derivatives of the solution, opposite to previous works based on stochastic flows. The approach extends to higher order derivatives under more regularity of the drift term. By a duality approach, these regularity results are then applied to prove uniqueness of weak solutions to linear stochastic continuity and transport equations and certain well-posedness results for the associated stochastic differential equation (sDE) (roughly speaking, existence and uniqueness of flows and their $C^α$ regularity, strong uniqueness for the sDE when the initial datum has diffuse law). Finally, we show two types of examples: on the one hand, we present well-posed sDEs, when the corresponding ODEs are ill-posed, and on the other hand, we give a counterexample in the supercritical case.

Absolutely continuous solutions for continuity equations in Hilbert spaces

We prove existence of solutions to continuity equations in a separable Hilbert space. We look for solutions which are absolutely continuous with respect to a reference measure γwhich is Fomin-differentiable with exponentially integrable partial logarithmic derivatives. We describe a class of examples to which our result applies and for which we can prove also uniqueness. Finally, we consider the case where γis the invariant measure of a reaction-diffusion equation and prove uniqueness of solutions in this case. We exploit that the gradient operator D_x is closable with respect to L^p(H,γ) and a recent formula for the commutator D_xP_t - P_tD_x where P_t is the transition semigroup corresponding to the reaction-diffusion equation, [DaDe14]. We stress that P_t is not necessarily symmetric in this case. This uniqueness result is an extension to such γof that in [DaFlRo14] where γwas the Gaussian invariant measure of a suitable Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

A numerical approach to Kolmogorov equation in high dimension based on Gaussian analysis

For Kolmogorov equations associated to finite dimensional stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in high dimension, a numerical method alternative to Monte Carlo simulations is proposed. The structure of the SDE is inspired by stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDE) and thus contains an underlying Gaussian process which is the key of the algorithm. A series development of the solution in terms of iterated integrals of the Gaussian process is given, it is proved to converge - also in the infinite dimensional limit - and it is numerically tested in a number of examples.

Fokker-Planck equation for dissipative 2D Euler equations with cylindrical noise

After a short review of recent progresses in 2D Euler equations with random initial conditions and noise, some of the recent results are improved by exploiting a priori estimates on the associated infinite dimensional Fokker-Planck equation. The regularity class of solutions investigated here does not allow energy- or enstrophy-type estimates, but only bounds in probability with respect to suitable distributions of the initial conditions. This is a remarkable application of Fokker-Planck equations in infinite dimensions. Among the example of random initial conditions we consider Gibbsian measures based on renormalized kinetic energy.

mSQG equations in distributional spaces and point vortex approximation

Existence of distributional solutions of a modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation (mSQG) is proven for $μ$-almost every initial condition, where $μ$ is a suitable Gaussian measure. The result is the by-product of existence of a stationary solution with white noise marginal. This solution is constructed as a limit of random point vortices, uniformly distributed and rescaled according to the Central Limit Theorem.

Ill posedness for the full Euler system driven by multiplicative white noise

We consider the Euler system describing the motion of a compressible fluid driven by a multiplicative white noise. We identify a large class of initial data for which the problem is ill posed - there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions. The solutions are adapted to the noise and satisfy the entropy admissibility criterion.

Energy conditional measures and 2D turbulence

We show that the invariant measure of point vortices, when conditioning the Hamiltonian to a finite interval, converges weakly to the enstrophy measure by conditioning the renormalized energy to the same interval. We also prove the existence of solutions to 2D Euler equations having the energy conditional measure as invariant measure. Some heuristic discussions and numerical simulations are presented in the last section.

A particle system approach to aggregation phenomena

Inspired by a PDE-ODE system of aggregation developed in the biomathematical literature, an interacting particle system representing aggregation at the level of individuals is investigated. It is proved that the empirical density of the individual converges to solution of the PDE-ODE system.

Renormalized Onsager functions and merging of vortex clusters

In this letter we numerically investigate the merging mechanism between two clusters of point vortices. We introduce a concept of renormalized Onsager function, an elaboration of the solutions of the mean field equation, and use it to understand the shape of the single cluster observed as a result of the merging process. We finally discuss the potential implications for the inverse cascade 2D turbulence.

A non-linear kinetic model of self-propelled particles with multiple equilibria

We introduce and analyse a continuum model for an interacting particle system of Vicsek type. The model is given by a non-linear kinetic partial differential equation (PDE) describing the time-evolution of the density $f_t$, in the single particle phase-space, of a collection of interacting particles confined to move on the one-dimensional torus. The corresponding stochastic differential equation for the position and velocity of the particles is a conditional McKean-Vlasov type of evolution (conditional in the sense that the process depends on its own law through its own conditional expectation). In this paper, we study existence and uniqueness of the solution of the PDE in consideration. Challenges arise from the fact that the PDE is neither elliptic (the linear part is only {\em hypoelliptic}) nor in gradient form. Moreover, for some specific choices of the interaction function and for the simplified case in which the density profile does not depend on the spatial variable, we show that the model exhibits multiple stationary states (corresponding to the particles forming a coordinated clockwise/anticlockwise rotational motion) and we study convergence to such states as well. Finally, we prove mean-field convergence of an appropriate $N$-particles system to the solution of our PDE: more precisely, we show that the empirical measures of such a particle system converge weakly, as $N \rightarrow \infty$, to the solution of the PDE.

The Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system as a scaling limit of particles in a fluid

Convergence of a system of particles, interacting with a fluid, to Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system is studied. The interaction between particles and fluid is described by Stokes drag force. The empirical measure of particles is proved to converge to the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck component of the system and the velocity of the fluid coupled with the particles converges in the uniform topology to the the Navier-Stokes component. A new uniqueness result for the PDE system is added.

Solution properties of a 3D stochastic Euler fluid equation

We prove local well-posedness in regular spaces and a Beale-Kato-Majda blow-up criterion for a recently derived stochastic model of the 3D Euler fluid equation for incompressible flow. This model describes incompressible fluid motions whose Lagrangian particle paths follow a stochastic process with cylindrical noise and also satisfy Newton's 2nd Law in every Lagrangian domain.

Uniform convergence of proliferating particles to the FKPP equation

In this paper we consider a system of Brownian particles with proliferation whose rate depends on the empirical measure. The dependence is more local than a mean field one and has been called moderate interaction by Oelschlager [17], [18]. We prove that the empirical process converges, uniformly in the space variable, to the solution of the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrowskii-Piskunov equation. We use a semigroup approach which is new in the framework of these systems and is inspired by some literature on stochastic partial differential equations.

The Vlasov-Navier-Stokes equations as a mean field limit

Convergence of particle systems to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes equations is a difficult topic with only fragmentary results. Under a suitable modification of the classical Stokes drag force interaction, here a partial result in this direction is proven. A particle system is introduced, its interaction with the fluid is modelled and tightness is proved, in a suitable topology, for the family of laws of the pair composed by solution of Navier-Stokes equations and empirical measure of the particles. Moreover, it is proved that every limit law is supported on weak solutions of the Vlasov-Navier- Stokes system. Open problems, like weak-strong uniqueness for this system and its relevance for the convergence of the particle system, are outlined.
