Kolmogorov equations associated to the stochastic 2D Euler equations

The Kolmogorov equation associated to a stochastic 2D Euler equations with transport type noise and random initial conditions is studied by a direct approach, based on Fourier analysis, Galerkin approximation and Wiener chaos methods. The method allows us to generalize previous results and to understand the role of the regularity of the noise, in relation to a limiting value of roughness.

Euler-Lagrangian approach to 3D stochastic Euler equations

3D stochastic Euler equations with a special form of multiplicative noise are considered. A Constantin-Iyer type representation in Euler-Lagrangian form is given, based on stochastic characteristics. Local existence and uniqueness of solutions in suitable Hoelder spaces is proved from the Euler-Lagrangian formulation.

A mean-field model with discontinuous coefficients for neurons with spatial interaction

Starting from a microscopic model for a system of neurons evolving in time which individually follow a stochastic integrate-and-fire type model, we study a mean-field limit of the system. Our model is described by a system of SDEs with discontinuous coefficients for the action potential of each neuron and takes into account the (random) spatial configuration of neurons allowing the interaction to depend on it. In the limit as the number of particles tends to infinity, we obtain a nonlinear Fokker-Planck type PDE in two variables, with derivatives only with respect to one variable and discontinuous coefficients. We also study strong well-posedness of the system of SDEs and prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak measure-valued solution to the PDE, obtained as the limit of the laws of the empirical measures for the system of particles.

$ρ$-white noise solution to 2D stochastic Euler equations

A stochastic version of 2D Euler equations with transport type noise in the vorticity is considered, in the framework of Albeverio--Cruzeiro theory [1] where the equation is considered with random initial conditions related to the so called enstrophy measure. The equation is studied by an approximation scheme based on random point vortices. Stochastic processes solving the Euler equations are constructed and their density with respect to the enstrophy measure is proved to satisfy a continuity equation in weak form. Relevant in comparison with the case without noise is the fact that here we prove a gradient type estimate for the density. Although we cannot prove uniqueness for the continuity equation, we discuss how the gradient type estimate may be related to this open problem.

Mean field limit of interacting filaments for 3D Euler equations

The 3D Euler equations, precisely local smooth solutions of class $H^s$ with $s>5/2$, are obtained as a mean field limit of finite families of interacting curves, the so called vortex filaments, described by means of the concept of $1$-currents. This work is a continuation of the a previous work, where a preliminary result in this direction was obtained, with the true Euler equations replaced by a vector valued non linear PDE with a mollified Biot-Savart relation.

Boundedness vs Unboundedness of A Noise Linked to Tsallis q-Statistics: The Role of The Overdamped Approximation

An apparently ideal way to generate continuous bounded stochastic processes is to consider the stochastically perturbed motion of a point of small mass in an infinite potential well, under overdamped approximation. Here, however, we show that the aforementioned procedure can be fallacious and lead to incorrect results. We indeed provide a counter-example concerning one of the most employed bounded noises, hereafter called Tsallis-Stariolo-Borland (TSB) noise, which admits the well known Tsallis q-statistics as stationary density. In fact, we show that for negative values of the Tsallis parameter q (corresponding to sufficiently large diffusion coefficient of the stochastic force), the motion resulting from the overdamped approximation is unbounded. We then investigate the cause of the failure of Kramers first type approximation, and we formally show that the solutions of the full Newtonian non-approximated model are bounded, following the physical intuition. Finally, we provide a new family of bounded noises extending the TSB noise, the boundedness of whose solutions we formally show.

On the mean field approximation of a stochastic model of tumor-induced angiogenesis

In the field of Life Sciences it it very common to deal with extremely complex systems, from both analytical and computational points of view, due to the unavoidable coupling of different interacting structures. As an example, angiogenesis has revealed to be an highly complex, and extremely interesting biomedical problem, due to the strong coupling between the kinetic parameters of the relevant branching - growth - anastomosis stochastic processes of the capillary network, at the microscale, and the family of interacting underlying biochemical fields, at the macroscale. In this paper an original revisited conceptual stochastic model of tumor driven angiogenesis has been proposed, for which it has been shown that it is possible to reduce complexity by taking advantage of the intrinsic multiscale structure of the system; one may keep the stochasticity of the dynamics of the vessel tips at their natural microscale, whereas the dynamics of the underlying fields is given by a deterministic mean field approximation obtained by an averaging at a suitable mesoscale. While in previous papers only an heuristic justification of this approach had been offered, in this paper a rigorous proof is given of the so called "propagation of chaos", which leads to a mean field approximation of the stochastic relevant measures associated with the vessel dynamics, and consequently of the underlying TAF field. As a side though important result, the non-extinction of the random process of tips has been proven during any finite time interval.

Weak vorticity formulation of 2D Euler equations with white noise initial condition

The 2D Euler equations with random initial condition distributed as a certain Gaussian measure are considered. The theory developed by S. Albeverio and A.-B. Cruzeiro is revisited, following the approach of weak vorticity formulation. A solution is constructed as a limit of random point vortices. This allows to prove that it is also limit of L^\infty-vorticity solutions. The result is generalized to initial measures that have a continuous bounded density with respect to the original Gaussian measure.

A mathematical model for growth of solid tumors and combination therapy with an application to colorectal cancer

We present a mathematical model, based on ordinary differential equations, for the evolution of solid tumors and their response to treatment. Specifically the effects of a cytotoxic agent and a monoclonal antibody are included as control term in the equations. The variables considered here are: the number of cancerous cells sensitive to chemotherapy, the number of cancerous cells resistant to chemotherapy, the degree of angiogenesis and the average intensity of VEGF. The rules that govern the quantities mentioned above are based on a geometrical argument: we approximate the tumor mass as a sphere and thus derive basic formulae for the normoxic cells and for VEGF production. The monoclonal antibody acts on VEGF and thus has in uence to the global degree of angiogenesis. Numerical estimates on some of the parameters are performed in order to match the main landmark in tumor progression and reaction to treatment in the specific case of colorectal cancer.

Well-posedness of the vector advection equations by stochastic perturbation

A linear stochastic vector advection equation is considered. The equation may model a passive magnetic field in a random fluid. The driving velocity field is a integrable to a certain power and the noise is infinite dimensional. We prove that, thanks to the noise, the equation is well posed in a suitable sense, opposite to what may happen without noise.

Infinite-dimensional calculus under weak spatial regularity of the processes

Two generalizations of Itô formula to infinite-dimensional spaces are given. The first one, in Hilbert spaces, extends the classical one by taking advantage of cancellations, when they occur in examples and it is applied to the case of a group generator. The second one, based on the previous one and a limit procedure, is an Itô formula in a special class of Banach spaces, having a product structure with the noise in a Hilbertian component, again the key point is the extension due to a cancellation. This extension to Banach spaces and in particular the specific cancellation are motivated by path-dependent Itô calculus.

An infinite-dimensional approach to path-dependent Kolmogorov equations

In this paper, a Banach space framework is introduced in order to deal with finite-dimensional path-dependent stochastic differential equations. A version of Kolmogorov backward equation is formulated and solved both in the space of $L^p$ paths and in the space of continuous paths using the associated stochastic differential equation, thus establishing a relation between path-dependent SDEs and PDEs in analogy with the classical case. Finally, it is shown how to establish a connection between such Kolmogorov equation and the analogue finite-dimensional equation that can be formulated in terms of the path-dependent derivatives recently introduced by Dupire, Cont and Fournié.

Existence and uniqueness for stochastic 2D Euler flows with bounded vorticity

Strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of solutions with $L^{\infty}$-vorticity of 2D stochastic Euler equations is proved. The noise is multiplicative and involves first derivatives. A Lagrangian approach is implemented, where a stochastic flow solving a nonlinear flow equation is constructed. Stability under regularization is also proved.

Propagation of chaos for interacting particles subject to environmental noise

A system of interacting particles described by stochastic differential equations is considered. As oppopsed to the usual model, where the noise perturbations acting on different particles are independent, here the particles are subject to the same space-dependent noise, similar to the (noninteracting) particles of the theory of diffusion of passive scalars. We prove a result of propagation of chaos and show that the limit PDE is stochastic and of inviscid type, as opposed to the case when independent noises drive the different particles.

Regularity of Stochastic Kinetic Equations

We consider regularity properties of stochastic kinetic equations with multiplicative noise and drift term which belongs to a space of mixed regularity ($L^p$-regularity in the velocity-variable and Sobolev regularity in the space-variable). We prove that, in contrast with the deterministic case, the SPDE admits a unique weakly differentiable solution which preserves a certain degree of Sobolev regularity of the initial condition without developing discontinuities. To prove the result we also study the related degenerate Kolmogorov equation in Bessel-Sobolev spaces and construct a suitable stochastic flow.

Synchronization by noise

We provide sufficient conditions for synchronization by noise, i.e. under these conditions we prove that weak random attractors for random dynamical systems consist of single random points. In the case of SDE with additive noise, these conditions are also essentially necessary. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a minimal weak point random attractor consisting of a single random point. As a result, synchronization by noise is proven for a large class of SDE with additive noise. In particular, we prove that the random attractor for an SDE with drift given by a (multidimensional) double-well potential and additive noise consists of a single random point. All examples treated in [Tearne, PTRF; 2008] are also included.

Mean field limit of interacting filaments and vector valued non linear PDEs

Families of $N$ interacting curves are considered, with long range, mean field type, interaction. A family of curves defines a 1-current, concentrated on the curves, analog of the empirical measure of interacting point particles. This current is proved to converge, as $N$ goes to infinity, to a mean field current, solution of a nonlinear, vector valued, partial differential equation. In the limit, each curve interacts with the mean field current and two different curves have an independence property if they are independent at time zero. This set-up is inspired from vortex filaments in turbulent fluids, although for technical reasons we have to restrict to smooth interaction, instead of the singular Biot-Savart kernel. All these results are based on a careful analysis of a nonlinear flow equation for 1-currents, its relation with the vector valued PDE and the continuous dependence on the initial conditions.

A spectral-based numerical method for Kolmogorov equations in Hilbert spaces

We propose a numerical solution for the solution of the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations associated with stochastic partial differential equations in Hilbert spaces. The method is based on the spectral decomposition of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup associated to the Kolmogorov equation. This allows us to write the solution of the Kolmogorov equation as a deterministic version of the Wiener-Chaos Expansion. By using this expansion we reformulate the Kolmogorov equation as a infinite system of ordinary differential equations, and by truncation it we set a linear finite system of differential equations. The solution of such system allow us to build an approximation to the solution of the Kolmogorov equations. We test the numerical method with the Kolmogorov equations associated with a stochastic diffusion equation, a Fisher-KPP stochastic equation and a stochastic Burgers Eq. in dimension 1.
