Fibonacci anyons and charge density order in the 12/5 and 13/5 plateaus

The $ν=12/5$ fractional quantum Hall plateau observed in $\mathrm{GaAs}$ semiconductor wells is a suspect in the search for non-Abelian Fibonacci anyons. Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group, we find clear evidence that fillings $ν= 12/5$ and $ν=13/5$ are in the $k = 3$ Read-Rezayi phase in the absence of particle-hole symmetry-breaking effects. The lowest energy charged excitation is identified as a non-Abelian Fibonacci anyon, distinguished from its Abelian counterpart by its local quadrupole moment. However, several experiments at $ν= 13/5$ observe a re-entrant integer quantum Hall effect, implying particle-hole symmetry is broken. We rule out spin polarization as the origin of the asymmetry. Further, we point out extremely close energetic competition between the Read-Rezayi phase and a re-entrant integer quantum Hall phase. This competition suggests that even small particle-hole symmetry-breaking perturbations can explain the experimentally observed asymmetry between $ν= 12/5$ and $13/5$. We find that at $ν=12/5$ Landau level mixing favors the Read-Rezayi phase over the re-entrant phase.

Obtaining highly-excited eigenstates of many-body localized Hamiltonians by the density matrix renormalization group

The eigenstates of many-body localized (MBL) Hamiltonians exhibit low entanglement. We adapt the highly successful density-matrix renormalization group method, which is usually used to find modestly entangled ground states of local Hamiltonians, to find individual highly excited eigenstates of many body localized Hamiltonians. The adaptation builds on the distinctive spatial structure of such eigenstates. We benchmark our method against the well studied random field Heisenberg model in one dimension. At moderate to large disorder, we find that the method successfully obtains excited eigenstates with high accuracy, thereby enabling a study of MBL systems at much larger system sizes than those accessible to exact-diagonalization methods.

Statistics of fractionalized excitations through threshold spectroscopy

We show that the anyonic statistics of fractionalized excitations display characteristic signatures in threshold spectroscopic measurements. Drawing motivation from topologically ordered phases such as gapped quantum spin liquids and fractional chern insulators which possess fractionalized excitations, we consider gapped systems with abelian anyonic excitations. The low energy onset of associated correlation functions near the threshold show universal behaviour depending on the statistics of the anyons. This explains some recent theoretical results in spin systems and also provides a route towards detecting statistics in experiments such as neutron scattering and tunneling spectroscopy.

Typicality approach to the optical conductivity in thermal and many-body localized phases

We study the frequency dependence of the optical conductivity $\text{Re} \, σ(ω)$ of the Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chain in the thermal and near the transition to the many-body localized phase induced by the strength of a random $z$-directed magnetic field. Using the method of dynamical quantum typicality, we calculate the real-time dynamics of the spin-current autocorrelation function and obtain the Fourier transform $\text{Re} \, σ(ω)$ for system sizes much larger than accessible to standard exact-diagonalization approaches. We find that the low-frequency behavior of $\text{Re} \, σ(ω)$ is well described by $\text{Re} \, σ(ω) \approx σ_\text{dc} + a \, |ω|^α$, with $α\approx 1$ in a wide range within the thermal phase and close to the transition. We particularly detail the decrease of $σ_\text{dc}$ in the thermal phase as a function of increasing disorder for strong exchange anisotropies. We further find that the temperature dependence of $σ_\text{dc}$ is consistent with the existence of a mobility edge.

Momentum-space entanglement and Loschmidt echo in Luttinger liquids after a quantum quench

Luttinger liquids (LLs) arise by coupling left- and right-moving particles through interactions in one dimension. This most natural partitioning of LLs is investigated by the momentum-space entanglement after a quantum quench using analytical and numerical methods. We show that the momentum-space entanglement spectrum of a LL possesses many universal features both in equilibrium and after a quantum quench. The largest entanglement eigenvalue is identical to the Loschmidt echo, i.e. the overlap of the disentangled and final wavefunctions of the system. The second largest eigenvalue is the overlap of the first excited state of the disentangled system with zero total momentum and the final wavefunction. The entanglement gap is universal both in equilibrium and after a quantum quench. The momentum-space entanglement entropy is always extensive and saturates fast to a time independent value after the quench, in sharp contrast to a spatial bipartitioning.

Density matrix renormalization group on a cylinder in mixed real and momentum space

We develop a variant of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm for two-dimensional cylinders that uses a real space representation along the cylinder and a momentum space representation in the perpendicular direction. The mixed representation allows us to use the momentum around the circumference as a conserved quantity in the DMRG algorithm. Compared with the traditional purely real-space approach, we find a significant speedup in computation time and a considerable reduction in memory usage. Applying the method to the interacting fermionic Hofstadter model, we demonstrate a reduction in computation time by over 20-fold, in addition to a sixfold memory reduction.

Bridging coupled wires and lattice Hamiltonian for two-component bosonic quantum Hall states

We investigate a model of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field by means of a coupled-wire approach. It has been numerically shown that this model exhibits at half filling the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state, which is a symmetry-protected topological phase protected by the $U(1)$ particle conservation [Y.-C. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116803 (2015)]. By combining the bosonization approach and a coupled-wire construction, we analytically confirm this finding and show that it even holds in the strongly anisotropic (quasi-one-dimensional) limit. We discuss the stability of the BIQH phase against tunneling that break the separate particle conservations on different sublattices down to a global particle conservation. We further argue that a phase transition between two different BIQH phases is in a deconfined quantum critical point described by two copies of the (2+1)-dimensional $O(4)$ nonlinear sigma model with the topological $θ$ term at $θ=π$. Finally we predict a possible fractional quantum Hall state, the Halperin (221) state, at 1/6 filling.

How periodic driving heats a disordered quantum spin chain

We study the energy absorption in real time of a disordered quantum spin chain subjected to coherent monochromatic periodic driving. We determine characteristic fingerprints of the well-known ergodic (Floquet-ETH for slow driving/weak disorder) and many-body localized (Floquet-MBL for fast driving/strong disorder) phases. In addition, we identify an intermediate regime, where the energy density of the system -- unlike the entanglement entropy a local and bounded observable -- grows logarithmically slowly over a very large time window.

Kagome chiral spin liquid as a gauged U(1) symmetry protected topological phase

While the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) on a class of spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets is by now well-established numerically, a controlled theoretical path from the lattice model leading to a low energy topological field theory is still lacking. This we provide via an explicit construction, starting from reformulating a microscopic model for a CSL as a lattice gauge theory, and deriving the low-energy form of its continuum limit. A crucial ingredient is the realisation that the bosonic spinons of the gauge theory exhibit a $U(1)$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which upon promoting its $U(1)$ global symmetry to a local gauge structure ("gauging") yields the CSL. We suggest that such an explicit lattice-based construction involving gauging of an SPT phase can be applied more generally to understand topological spin liquids.

Sudden expansion and domain-wall melting of strongly interacting bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices and on multileg ladders

We numerically investigate the expansion of clouds of hard-core bosons in the two-dimensional square lattice using a matrix-product-state based method. This nonequilibrium set-up is induced by quenching the trapping potential to zero and our work is specifically motivated by a recent experiment with interacting bosons in an optical lattice [Ronzheimer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 205301 (2013)]. As the anisotropy of the amplitudes $J_x$ and $J_y$ for hopping in different spatial directions is varied from the one- to the two-dimensional case, we observe a crossover from a fast ballistic expansion in the one-dimensional limit $J_x \gg J_y$ to much slower dynamics in the isotropic two-dimensional limit $J_x=J_y$. We further study the dynamics on multi-leg ladders and long cylinders. For these geometries we compare the expansion of a cloud to the melting of a domain wall, which helps us to identify several different regimes of the expansion as a function of time. By studying the dependence of expansion velocities on both the anisotropy $J_y/J_x$ and the number of legs, we observe that the expansion on two-leg ladders, while similar to the two-dimensional case, is slower than on wider ladders. We provide a qualitative explanation for this observation based on an analysis of the rung spectrum.

Quantum quench in 2D using the variational Baeriswyl wavefunction

By combining the Baeriswyl wavefunction with equilibrium and time-dependent variational principles, we develop a non-equilibrium formalism to study quantum quenches for two dimensional spinless fermions with nearest-neighbour hopping and repulsion. The variational ground state energy and the short time dynamics agree convincingly with the results of numerically exact simulations. We find that depending on the initial and final interaction strength, the quenched system either exhibits undamped oscillations or relaxes to a time independent steady state. The time averaged expectation value of the CDW order parameter rises sharply when crossing from the steady state regime to the oscillating regime, indicating that the system, being non-integrable, shows signs of thermalization with an effective temperature above or below the equilibrium critical temperature, respectively.

Bosonic Integer Quantum Hall effect in an interacting lattice model

We study a bosonic model with correlated hopping on a honeycomb lattice, and show that its ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) phase, a prominent example of a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. By using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, we establish the existence of the BIQH phase by providing clear numerical evidence: (i) a quantized Hall conductance with $|σ_{xy}|= 2$ (ii) two counter propagating gapless edge modes. Our simple model is an example of a novel class of systems that can stabilize SPT phases protected by a continuous symmetry on lattices and opens up new possibilities for the experimental realization of these exotic phases.

Interaction driven phases in the half-filled honeycomb lattice: an infinite density matrix renormalization group study

The emergence of the Haldane Chern insulator state due to strong short range repulsive interactions in the half-filled fermionic spinless honeycomb lattice model has been proposed and challenged with different methods and yet it still remains controversial. In this work we revisit the problem using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method and report numerical evidence supporting i) the absence of the Chern insulator state, ii) two previously unnoticed charge ordered phases and iii) the existence and stability of all the non-topological competing orders that were found previously within mean field. In addition, we discuss the nature of the corresponding phase transitions based on our numerical data. Our work establishes the phase diagram of the half-filled honeycomb lattice model tilting the balance towards the absence of a Chern insulator phase for this model.

Absence of orthogonality catastrophe after a spatially inhomogeneous interaction quench in Luttinger liquids

We investigate the Loschmidt echo, the overlap of the initial and final wavefunctions of Luttinger liquids after a spatially inhomogeneous interaction quench. In studying the Luttinger model, we obtain an analytic solution of the bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations after quenching the interactions within a finite spatial region. As opposed to the power law temporal decay following a potential quench, the interaction quench in the Luttinger model leads to a finite, hardly time dependent overlap, therefore no orthogonality catastrophe occurs. The steady state value of the Loschmidt echo after a sudden inhomogeneous quench is the square of the respective adiabatic overlaps. Our results are checked and validated numerically on the XXZ Heisenberg chain.

Signatures of the many-body localization transition in the dynamics of entanglement and bipartite fluctuations

The many-body localization transition is a dynamical quantum phase transition between a localized and an extended phase. We study this transition in the XXZ model with disordered magnetic field and focus on the time evolution following a global quantum quench. While the dynamics of the bipartite entanglement and spin fluctuations are already known to provide insights into the nature of the many-body localized phases, we discuss the relevance of these quantities in the context of the localization transition. In particular, we observe that near the transition the long time limits of both quantities show behavior similar to divergent thermodynamic fluctuations.

Of chain-based order and quantum spin liquids in dipolar spin ice

Recent experiments on the spin-ice material Dy2Ti2O7 suggest that the Pauling "ice entropy", characteristic of its classical Coulombic spin-liquid state, may be lost at low temperatures [D. Pomaranski et al., Nature Phys. 9, 353 (2013)]. However, despite nearly two decades of intensive study, the nature of the equilibrium ground state of spin ice remains uncertain. Here we explore how long-range dipolar interactions D, short-range exchange interactions, and quantum fluctuations combine to determine the ground state of dipolar spin ice. We identify a new organisational principle, namely that ordered ground states are selected from a set of "chain states" in which dipolar interactions are exponentially screened. Using both quantum and classical Monte Carlo simulation, we establish phase diagrams as a function of quantum tunneling g, and temperature T, and find that only a very small g_c << D is needed to stabilize a quantum spin-liquid ground state. We discuss the implications of these results for Dy2Ti2O7.

Efficient variational diagonalization of fully many-body localized Hamiltonians

We introduce a unitary matrix-product operator (UMPO) based variational method that approximately finds all the eigenstates of fully many-body localized (fMBL) one-dimensional Hamiltonians. The computational cost of the variational optimization scales linearly with system size for a fixed bond dimension of the UMPO ansatz. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by considering the Heisenberg chain in a strongly disordered magnetic field for which we compare the approximation to exact diagonalization results.

Z2 topological liquid of hard-core bosons on a kagome lattice at 1/3 filling

We consider hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice in the presence of short range repulsive interactions and focus particularly on the filling factor 1/3. In the strongly interacting limit, the low energy excitations can be described by the quantum fully packed loop coverings on the triangular lattice. Using a combination of tensor-product state based methods and exact diagonalization techniques, we show that the system has an extended Z2 topological liquid phase as well as a lattice nematic phase. The latter breaks lattice rotational symmetry. By tuning appropriate parameters in the model, we study the quantum phase transition between the topological and the symmetry broken phases. We construct the critical theory for this transition using a mapping to an Ising gauge theory that predicts the transition to belong to the O(3) universality class.
